Offshore Aquaculture Economic Modelling And Site Selection Protocols, Tyler Sclodnick Jul 2014

Offshore Aquaculture Economic Modelling And Site Selection Protocols, Tyler Sclodnick

Open Access Theses

The offshore marine aquaculture industry has shown slower growth than other regions and sectors of the industry despite ample spatial opportunities. A primary cause for this is the nature and perception of aquaculture investment opportunities which are less attractive relative to alternatives in the tropical regions of the Americas. Two consulting tools were built to facilitate the progression of potential projects beyond the planning stage. An economic model projects capital costs and cash flows based on industry supported fish performance and market assumptions which gives an early indication of the financial viability of a proposal. Remote site selection protocols use …

Climate Change: Threats To Social Welfare And Social Justice Requiring Social Work Intervention, Lauren Caroline Achstatter

21st Century Social Justice

The article looks at climate change though a social development framework, with emphasis on social justice and social welfare. It evaluates how market-based capitalism continues to contribute to the problem while ignoring the warnings from the scientific community. The article goes on to report that despite the devastation of climate change, concerns – mainly financial in nature - continue to hinder progress towards reform. The article then argues that given the evidence, climate change qualifies as a topic of interest for social workers. The article goes on to advocate for social work involvement highlighting some suggested areas for action.

Policy Impact Assessment: The “Reasonable Break Time” Provision Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, Merritt Juliano

21st Century Social Justice

Breastfeeding continues to be the most optimal source of nutrition for infants under 6 months of age, and has been associated with a wide variety of infant and maternal health benefits, including protection against certain illnesses and diseases. Most health organizations recommend exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months post-birth. Despite these recommendations, breastfeeding women, especially those in lower socioeconomic groups face many challenges in our society. Moreover, maternal employment stands as a significant barrier to successful breastfeeding durations. To counter these problems, Section 4207 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act [ACA] was enacted to offer …

Conditional Cash Transfers, Community, And Empowerment Of Women In Colombia, Harlan Downs-Tepper Jul 2014

Conditional Cash Transfers, Community, And Empowerment Of Women In Colombia, Harlan Downs-Tepper

21st Century Social Justice

In 2001, the Colombian government initiated an experiment in poverty alleviation called Familias en Acción. This conditional cash transfer (CCT) program takes a novel approach to poverty reduction by addressing short- and long-term factors contributing to poverty. Though Colombia’s CCT program is just one of a wave of similar initiatives, its unique context and unexpected social effects, beyond the primary intentions of program designers, differentiate it from other such programs. Drawing on 200 interviews and focus group discussions which he conducted with academic experts, program beneficiaries and program administrators in three Colombian cities, the author finds that an unexpected …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Presentations and Grand Rounds

Dysphagia is a common sequela of the treatment of head and neck cancer and is frequently managed with esophageal dilation in patients with dysphagia secondary to hypopharyngeal stenosis. Reported complications of esophageal dilation include bleeding, esophageal perforation, and mediastinitis. We examine four cases of cervical spine osteomyelitis presenting as a delayed complication of esophageal dilation for hypopharyngeal stenosis in patients with a history of laryngectomy or pharyngectomy and radiation with or without chemotherapy. The history of head and neck surgery and radiation in these patients further complicates the management of the cervical spine osteomyelitis.

Badge It! Using Digital Badges To Certify Information Literacy Skills Within Disciplinary Curriculum, Emily Ford, Jost Lottes, Betty T. Izumi, Dawn Richardson

Library Instruction West 2014

As technology in higher education rapidly changes, new pedagogical tools are being tested, developed, and implemented. Digital badges systems are one such tool that can be used to certify student skills and competencies, including information literacy skills. Despite new teaching technologies and pedagogical approaches, it remains difficult for instruction librarians to lead experimentation. As a result, librarians depend on collaborative relationships with disciplinary faculty to experiment with pedagogies and tools like badging. At Portland State University, however, librarians are leading a collaborative digital badges project with Community Health Faculty to develop, deliver, assess, and track student achievements in information literacy. …

Population-Level Parenting Programs: A Survey Of Parents In The Lehigh Valley Health Network, Rosalie Cawley

Research Scholars Poster Presentation

Abstract

Child maltreatment, which includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse, is a large scale health issue that requires intervention at a population level (Prinz, Sanders, Shapiro, Whitaker & Lutzker, 2009). In 2007, 5.8 million children were involved in alleged maltreatment reports to child protective service agencies (Zimmerman & Mercy, 2010). Parenting programs can potentially help prevent child maltreatment and its physical, developmental and psychological repercussions by providing parents with support, education and interventions (MacLeod & Nelson, 2010). In order to best meet the needs of Lehigh Valley Health Network families, the LVHN Parent Education department surveyed parents on their content, …

Researching The Impact Of Medication Reconciliation Technicians (Mrts) In The Ed, Jon Carlos Gonzalez, Leroy Kromis

Research Scholars Poster Presentation

Introduction

One of the most significant issues facing patient safety is medical errors. It has been estimated that as many as 98,000 deaths per year are a result of these mistakes with at least one third being medication inaccuracies (Henneman, 2007). 30% of these medication errors are due to prescribing errors related with incomplete medication histories upon admission (Sanchez, 2014). The implementation of an effective medication reconciliation program upon admission has been shown to significantly decrease these discrepancies and thus decrease errors and produce improved patient outcomes. Since 2006 the joint commission has showed the importance of Medication Reconciliation by …

Financial Decisions Among Undergraduate Students From Low-Income And Working-Class Social Class Backgrounds, Krista M. Soria, Brad Weiner, Elissa C. Lu Jul 2014

Financial Decisions Among Undergraduate Students From Low-Income And Working-Class Social Class Backgrounds, Krista M. Soria, Brad Weiner, Elissa C. Lu

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Low-income and working-class students face many challenges related to the costs and affordability of higher education; yet, little is known about the financial decisions made by these groups of students while they are enrolled in higher education and how their decisions might differ from middle/upper-class students. Using data from students enrolled at six large, public research universities in 2012, researchers examined 16 different financial decisions of undergraduate students. Results suggest that low-income and working-class students are more likely to make decisions that could negatively impact their immediate academic experience, serve as disruptive barriers to success, delay or prolong graduation, or …

Design And Synthesis Of Chelating Compounds And Solid-Supported Chelators For Metal Depleted Solutions, Surendra Dawadi Jul 2014

Design And Synthesis Of Chelating Compounds And Solid-Supported Chelators For Metal Depleted Solutions, Surendra Dawadi

Dissertations

Metals are essential to life, yet they can be toxic for biological systems when present in excessive amounts. The major source of metal overload in humans is diet; and in some cases, intravenous feeding. Thus the removal of toxic metal ions from contaminated clinical products such as total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions, and drinking and waste water is extremely important. The use of chelating resins, which are polymeric solids containing covalently immobilized chelating compounds, for the selective removal of metal ions from contaminated solutions has been conceptualized long ago. Herein, the design and synthesis of metal specific chelating compounds and …

Reducing/Preventing Hypoglycemic Risk Through Evidence-Based Practice, Jay Pescatore, Joyce Najarian Msn, Rn, Cde

Research Scholars Poster Presentation

Abstract:

Although sulfonylureas are useful in reducing blood glucose levels in the outpatient management of diabetes, continued use in the hospital is discouraged by professional organizations such as the American Diabetes Association (ADA), American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), and Endocrine Society (Umpierrez, 2012) (Moghissi, 2009). This class of oral agents is well known to contribute to hypoglycemia, especially in patients with renal insufficiency and nutritional irregularities. The network’s DMQIT team would like to propose either the complete removal of sulfonylureas from inpatient formularies or consideration to limit the use for new starts as part of discharge planning.

BACKGROUND:

Reduced zinc intake has been related to atherogenesis and arteriosclerosis. We verified this assumption in very old individuals, which are particularly prone to both zinc deficiency and structural and functional changes in the arterial wall.

METHODS:

Subjects (n = 201, 80-102 years) with uneventful cardiovascular history and who were not in use of anti-inflammatory treatments in the last 30-days were enrolled. Daily intake of zinc, lipid profile, plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), plasma zinc, flow-mediated dilation (FMD), carotid ultrasonography and cardiac computed tomography were obtained. Young's Elastic Modulus, Stiffness Index and Artery Compliance were calculated.

RESULTS:

There was no significant …

Exercise, Ptsd Symptoms, And Weight-Loss In Veterans Enrolled In A National Weight-Management Program, Jordan A. Fields

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Evidence suggests that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may function as a risk factor for obesity, which is linked to a number of deleterious physical health comorbidities. Individuals with PTSD also tend to decrease their participation in exercise, which further increases risk for adverse health outcomes. However, studies suggest that exercise may be a promising intervention for PTSD and exercise is often included as an important part of weight loss treatment. Military veterans are a population at high risk for PTSD and obesity and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMC) nationwide have instituted a weight management program (MOVE!) to address the issue …

Metagenomic Identification Of A Novel Salt Tolerance Gene From The Human Gut Microbiome Which Encodes A Membrane Protein With Homology To A Brp/Blh-Family Beta-Carotene 15,15'-Monooxygenase, Eamonn P. Culligan, Roy D. Sleator, Julian R. Marchesi, Colin Hill

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

The human gut microbiome consists of at least 3 million non-redundant genes, 150 times that of the core human genome. Herein, we report the identification and characterisation of a novel stress tolerance gene from the human gut metagenome. The locus, assigned brpA, encodes a membrane protein with homology to a brp/blh-family β-carotene monooxygenase. Cloning and heterologous expression of brpA in Escherichia coli confers a significant salt tolerance phenotype. Furthermore, when cultured in the presence of exogenous β-carotene, cell pellets adopt a red/orange pigmentation indicating the incorporation of carotenoids in the cell membrane.

Microbial Diversity Of A Mediterranean Soil And Its Changes After Biotransformed Dry Olive Residue Amendment, José A. Siles, Caio T.C.C Rachid, Inmaculada Sampedro, Inmaculada García-Romera, James M. Tiedje

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Mediterranean basin has been identified as a biodiversity hotspot, about whose soil microbial diversity little is known. Intensive land use and aggressive management practices are degrading the soil, with a consequent loss of fertility. The use of organic amendments such as dry olive residue (DOR), a waste produced by a two-phase olive-oil extraction system, has been proposed as an effective way to improve soil properties. However, before its application to soil, DOR needs a pre-treatment, such as by a ligninolytic fungal transformation, e.g. Coriolopsis floccosa. The present study aimed to describe the bacterial and fungal diversity in a …

Avoidance Of Laryngeal Injuries During Gastric Intubation, Jyoti Burad, Sonali Deoskar, Pradipta Date, Rohit, Pradeep Sharma

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Gastric intubation is a common and simple procedure that is often performed on patients who are sedated or anaesthetised. If the gastric tube (GT) is inserted blindly while the patient is unconscious, this procedure may result in easily preventable complications such as laryngeal trauma. We present an interesting case where the blind placement of a orogastric tube (OGT) in an anesthetised 52-year-old female patient at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Oman resulted in significant arytenoid trauma. This led to delayed tracheal extubation. The movement of the GT from the oropharyngeal area to the upper oesophageal sphincter can be visualised and …

The Effect Of Economic And Social Conditions On The Use Of Clinical Preventive Services, Bisma Ali Sayed

Open Access Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between economic conditions and individuals’ use of clinical preventive (CP) services. CP services form the cornerstone of the national healthcare agenda, and are key in the fight to reduce morbidity and mortality in the United States. Despite this, low utilization rates remain concerning, with recent statistics indicating that rates of CP service use fall well below the targets outlined in Healthy People 2020. In the present study, I focus on individuals’ use of three CP services, influenza vaccinations, blood cholesterol screening, and endoscopic colorectal cancer screening. Broadly, I examine the effect of state-level unemployment and …
