Poverty, Educational Achievement, And The Role Of The Courts, Michael A. Rebell Sep 2014

Poverty, Educational Achievement, And The Role Of The Courts, Michael A. Rebell

New England Journal of Public Policy

The large and growing proportion of U.S. students who come from poverty backgrounds explains this country’s relatively low performance on international achievement tests. These students need a broad range of comprehensive educational services if they are to have a meaningful opportunity to succeed in school. These opportunities include not only adequate resources for basic K–12 educational services but also parent engagement, health and other services, and additional early education, after-school, and summer programs. In most states, the schools attended by students with the greatest needs tend to receive the fewest resources because of the inequitable systems most states use for …

Getting To The Core And Evolving The Education Reform Movement To A System Of Continuous Improvement, Fernando M. Reimers, Eleonora Villegas-Reimers Sep 2014

Getting To The Core And Evolving The Education Reform Movement To A System Of Continuous Improvement, Fernando M. Reimers, Eleonora Villegas-Reimers

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article places the most recent study of PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) in historical perspective, reviewing the role of international comparisons in efforts to build public education systems as key institutions of democratic societies. It discusses the findings for the United States, examining differences with other participating countries. It also looks at a paradox. Despite the high priority education has received in the United States in the past two decades, the country underperformed in a number of indicators in the PISA in comparison with many other countries participating in the study. The authors explain the findings as the …

The Elaborated Intrusion Theory Of Desire: A 10-Year Retrospective And Implications For Addiction Treatments, Jon May, David J. Kavanagh, Jackie Andrade Sep 2014

The Elaborated Intrusion Theory Of Desire: A 10-Year Retrospective And Implications For Addiction Treatments, Jon May, David J. Kavanagh, Jackie Andrade

School of Psychology

Ten years after the publication of Elaborated Intrusion (EI) Theory, there is now substantial research into its key predictions. The distinction between intrusive thoughts, which are driven by automatic processes, and their elaboration, involving controlled processing, is well established. Desires for both addictive substances and other desired targets are typically marked by imagery, especially when they are intense. Attention training strategies such as body scanning reduce intrusive thoughts, while concurrent tasks that introduce competing sensory information interfere with elaboration, especially if they compete for the same limited-capacity working memory resources. EI Theory has spawned new assessment instruments that are performing …

Functional And Self-Rated Health Mediate The Association Between Diabetes And Depression, Christian Geiser, Sylvia Boehme, Babette Renneberg

Psychology Faculty Publications

Depression is common among persons with diabetes and associated with adverse health outcomes. To date, little is known about the causal mechanisms that lead to depression in diabetes. The aim of the present study was to examine to which extent functional and self-rated health mediate the association between physical health and depressive symptoms in diabetes. Data of n = 3222 individuals with type 2 diabetes were analyzed cross-sectionally and longitudinally at three measurement occasions using path analysis. Indicators of physical health were glycemic control, number of comorbid somatic diseases, BMI, and insulin dependence. Furthermore, functional health, self-rated health and depressive …

Background: DNA methylation is a widely studied epigenetic phenomenon; alterations in methylation patterns influence human phenotypes and risk of disease. As part of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 (HM450) BeadChip was used to measure DNA methylation in peripheral blood obtained from ~3000 African American study participants. Over 480,000 cytosine-guanine (CpG) dinucleotide sites were surveyed on the HM450 BeadChip. To evaluate the impact of technical variation, 265 technical replicates from 130 participants were included in the study.

Results: For each CpG site, we calculated the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to compare variation of methylation levels …

Cause For Optimism? Child Poverty Declines For The First Time Since Before The Great Recession, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Jess Carson, Andrew P. Schaefer Sep 2014

Cause For Optimism? Child Poverty Declines For The First Time Since Before The Great Recession, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Jess Carson, Andrew P. Schaefer

Carsey Publications

New data released on September 18, 2014, by the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that child poverty fell by 0.4 percentage point between 2012 and 2013, to 22.2 percent. Though still significantly higher than in 2007 when the Great Recession hit (18.0 percent), and higher than at its conclusion (20.0 percent) in 2009, the decline from 2012 may be cause for optimism. Estimates suggest the number of poor children declined by roughly 300,000 between 2012 and 2013.

Global Vitamin Enhancement Of Maize Grain: Wonderful Opportunities For Genomic Selection, Torbert Rocheford Sep 2014

Global Vitamin Enhancement Of Maize Grain: Wonderful Opportunities For Genomic Selection, Torbert Rocheford

Dawn or Doom Conference

Advances in understanding the genetic basis of variation for levels of total carotenoids and provitamin A carotenoids in maize grain have been made recently. Provitamin A carotenoids are converted to retinol or Vitamin A in the human body. Global Vitamin A deficiencies are widespread. Vitamin A deficiency can result in night blindness and increased susceptibility to infections and can eventually result in death. It is estimated that 250,000 to 500,000 children become blind every year as a result of vitamin A deficiency, and that half of these die within one year of losing their eyesight (www.who.int/nutrition/topics/vad/en/).

Fortunately the genes that …

A Vavilovian Approach To Discovering Crop-Associated Microbes With Potential To Enhance Plant Immunity, Iago L. Hale, Kirk Broders, Gloria Iriarte Sep 2014

A Vavilovian Approach To Discovering Crop-Associated Microbes With Potential To Enhance Plant Immunity, Iago L. Hale, Kirk Broders, Gloria Iriarte

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Through active associations with a diverse community of largely non-pathogenic microbes, a plant may be thought of as possessing an “extended genotype,” an interactive cross-organismal genome with potential, exploitable implications for plant immunity. The successful enrichment of plant microbiomes with beneficial species has led to numerous commercial applications, and the hunt for new biocontrol organisms continues. Increasingly flexible and affordable sequencing technologies, supported by increasingly comprehensive taxonomic databases, make the characterization of non-model crop-associated microbiomes a widely accessible research method toward this end; and such studies are becoming more frequent. A summary of this emerging literature reveals, however, the need …

Responses Of Sympatric Karenia Brevis, Prorocentrum Minimum, And Heterosigma Akashiwo To The Exposure Of Crude Oil, Koray Özhan, Sibel Bargu Sep 2014

Responses Of Sympatric Karenia Brevis, Prorocentrum Minimum, And Heterosigma Akashiwo To The Exposure Of Crude Oil, Koray Özhan, Sibel Bargu

Faculty Publications

Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on phytoplankton, particularly, the tolerability and changes to the toxin profiles of harmful toxic algal species remain unknown. The degree to which oil-affected sympatric Karenia brevis, Prorocentrum minimum, and Heterosigma akashiwo, all of which are ecologically important species in the Gulf of Mexico, was investigated. Comparison of their tolerability to that of non-toxic species showed that the toxin-production potential of harmful species does not provide a selective advantage. Investigated toxin profiles for K. brevis and P. minimum demonstrated an increase in toxin productivity at the lowest crude oil concentration (0.66 mg L−1 …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Development of sensitive and specific biomarkers, preferably those circulating in body fluids is critical for early diagnosis of cancer. This study performed profiling of microRNAs (miRNAs) in exocrine pancreatic secretions (pancreatic juice) by microarray analysis utilizing pancreatic juice from 6 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients and two pooled samples from 6 non-pancreatic, non-healthy (NPNH) as controls. Differentially circulating miRNAs were subsequently validated in 88 pancreatic juice samples from 50 PDAC, 19 chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients and 19 NPNH controls. A marked difference in the profiles of four circulating miRNAs (miR-205, miR-210, miR-492, and miR-1427) was observed in pancreatic juice collected …

Bridging The Food Gap: Addressing The Feasibility And Applicability Of Three Key Traditionally Western Food Preservation Techniques To Improving Household Food Security And Reducing Malnutrition In Uganda., Eva K. Baguma Sep 2014

Bridging The Food Gap: Addressing The Feasibility And Applicability Of Three Key Traditionally Western Food Preservation Techniques To Improving Household Food Security And Reducing Malnutrition In Uganda., Eva K. Baguma

Capstone Collection

Food wastage is the leading cause of food insecurity and malnutrition in the world today. A huge amount of food gets wasted along the food supply chain from the time it is harvested to the time it gets to our plates. A significant amount of the food wasted happens in the home as well as on farms, in restaurants and supermarkets across the globe.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, many families and communities are facing severe food shortages due to lack of electricity for refrigeration, poor storage facilities and limited access to markets.

However for many centuries, different cultures around the world …

Engaging The Liminal: Indigenous Perceptions Within The Healthcare System, Karen J. Lottis

Nursing ETDs

It is well documented that there is decreased access and utilization of healthcare services by minority populations. The purpose of this study was to explore experiences with, and views of, the healthcare system among remotely situated First Nations people of coastal British Columbia (BC), to shed light on elements considered crucial to healthcare delivery. The study was conducted as a critical ethnography with an underlying framework of phenomenology and critical social theory. Multiple sources of data collection included private interviews, community observations, conversations, celebratory gatherings, participant-observer field notes, and the art and music of the people involved. Multiphase data management …

Sophie D. Aberle And The United Pueblos Agency, 1935-1944, Kathlene Ferris

History ETDs

This thesis examines Aberle's administration in the coincided with the New Deal era and John Collier's administration of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Aberle was a medical researcher and applied anthropologist who brought several years of field experience among the Pueblos to the UPA. Some opposition arose over her appointment, in part because she was a woman. More important, many Pueblos opposed the consolidation of several Pueblo agencies into one large agency, the United Pueblos Agency. The new agency encompassed the nineteen New Mexico pueblos and three small Navajo reservations. Some resistance to Aberle and the consolidated agency lasted throughout …
