Preventive Effects Of Dendrobium Candidum Wall Ex Lindl. On The Formation Of Lung Metastases In Balb/C Mice Injected With 26-M3.1 Colon Carcinoma Cells, Guijie Li, Peng Sun, Yalin Zhou, Xin Zhao, Feng Chen

Publications

Dendrobium candidum Wall ex Lindl. (D. candidum) is a traditional Chinese medicine widely used in Asia. The present study has showed that D. candidum exerted an anti-metastatic effect in mice injected with 26-M3.1 colon carcinoma cells. D. candidum showed the most marked tumor inhibitory rate of 64.5% at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight (b.w). The mRNA and protein expression of Bax in lung tissue of D. candidum-treated mice was shown to be higher as compared with control mice, whereas the mRNA and protein expression of Bcl-2 showed the opposite trend. Decreased mRNA and protein expression …

“I Am Kind Of A Good Writer And Kind Of Not”: Examining Students’ Writing Attitudes, Anna H. Hall, Ysaaca Axelrod

Publications

Since writing ability has been found to be an important predictor of school success and college readiness, it is important for teachers to understand the connections between students’ attitudes toward writing, writing self-efficacy, and writing achievement. This article describes the findings from focus groups conducted with 81 students in grades K-5 during which participants discussed their attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs about writing. Focusing on the power of students’ voices, this study adds a unique perspective not often found in the affective domain of writing research. Five broad themes emerged related to students’ writing attitudes including: (1) feelings about writing, (2) …

Growing Local, Robert P. King, Michael S. Hand, Miguel I. Gómez

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In an increasingly commercialized world, the demand for better quality, healthier food has given rise to one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. food system: locally grown food. Many believe that “relocalization” of the food system will provide a range of public benefits, including lower carbon emissions, increased local economic activity, and closer connections between consumers, farmers, and communities. The structure of local food supply chains, however, may not always be capable of generating these perceived benefits.

Growing Local reports the findings from a coordinated series of case studies designed to develop a deeper, more nuanced understanding of …

Allied Health Student Clinical Placements In Residential Aged Care Facilities: Staff Opinions, Attitudes, And Support Needs, Catherine Johnston, Clint Newstead, Sarah Walmsley, Lesley Macdonald Oct 2014

Allied Health Student Clinical Placements In Residential Aged Care Facilities: Staff Opinions, Attitudes, And Support Needs, Catherine Johnston, Clint Newstead, Sarah Walmsley, Lesley Macdonald

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: As the population ages, the incidence and prevalence of chronic health issues requiring allied health management is increasing. Currently, there is an undersupply of appropriately skilled allied health professionals working in aged care. This has also been identified as a setting in which many beginning health practitioners are reluctant to seek employment. In order to address this workforce shortage, it is imperative that students are prepared for a possible future career within aged care facilities. Early clinical experience within this setting may increase student confidence, raise awareness of the need for services, and encourage students to consider working in …

Adipogenic And Myogenic Stem Cells In Brown Fat: A Study Of Progenitors And Regenerative Capacity, Xin Yang Oct 2014

Adipogenic And Myogenic Stem Cells In Brown Fat: A Study Of Progenitors And Regenerative Capacity, Xin Yang

Open Access Theses

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) utilizes stored lipids to generate heat, therefore reducing body fat content and favoring a leaner body composition. Recent identification of metabolically active BAT in adult humans has sparked broad interests in understanding the developmental origin and postnatal homeostasis of BAT. However, the stem cell population that gives rise to BAT during development and maintains BAT mass at postnatal stage has not been characterized. In addition, whether adult BAT has the capacity to regenerate after injury or to proliferate in response to cold is flargely unknown. Furthermore, although BAT and skeletal muscle are known to share a …

Optimization Of Switch Virtual Keyboard By Using Computational Modelling, Xiao Zhang Oct 2014

Optimization Of Switch Virtual Keyboard By Using Computational Modelling, Xiao Zhang

Open Access Theses

In this thesis, I first reviewed some keyboard technologies used by people with motor difficulties, and described design elements that influence efficiency. I cast the design of a switch keyboard as an optimization problem, and arrangement of keys on such a keyboard as a Mixed Integer Programming problem. One significant variable in the MIP problem, the error rate, is related to several other variables. I treated modeling of the error rate as a parameter estimation problem, and used a data mining method. I designed HCI experiments to gather data for parameter estimation, using Bayesian logistic regression model. The empirical data …

Normative Scores For The Nih Toolbox Dynamic Visual Acuity Test From 3 To 85 Years, Carol Li, Jennifer L. Beaumont, Rose Marie Rine, Jerry Slotkin, Michael C. Schubert

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

As part of the National Institutes of HealthToolbox initiative, a computerized test of dynamic visual acuity (cDVA) was developed and validated as an easy-to-administer, cost- and timeefficient test of vestibular and visual function. To establish normative reference values, 3,992 individuals, aged 3–85 years, without vestibular pathology underwent cDVA testing at multiple clinical research testing facilities across the United States. Test scores were stratified by sociodemographic characteristics. cDVA was worse in males (p <0.001) and those subjects 50 years or older, while there was no difference in dynamic visual acuity across age groups binned from 3 to 49 years. Furthermore, we used these normative cDVA data as a criterion reference to compare both the long (validated) and short versions of the test. Both versions can distinguish between those with and without vestibular pathology (p D0.0002 long; p D0.0025 short). The intraclass correlation coefficient between longand short-cDVA tests was 0.86.

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Medi-Cal-enrolled women who are pregnant are entitled to coverage for enriched pregnancy-related care under Medi-Cal’s Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP), a national landmark in the care and management of pregnant women with elevated health risks due to their low economic status. This entitlement applies to all pregnant women enrolled in Medi-Cal, including women who also are enrolled in subsidized health plans purchased through Covered California. The task that jointly faces Medi-Cal and Covered California is how best to align these two sources of pregnancy care financing in order to achieve a central goal of SB 857 – ensuring that dually …

The Effects Of Plant Species And Water Table Height On Methane Transport In Wetlands, Cain L. Silvey Oct 2014

The Effects Of Plant Species And Water Table Height On Methane Transport In Wetlands, Cain L. Silvey

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This paper describes two complementary experiments in which methane flux from individual wetland plants was monitored. The first experiment was designed to explore species-specific differences in methane transport and took place in a greenhouse on the University of Nebraska - Lincoln's east campus during the summer of 2013. The second experiment took place the following summer at a restored wetland near Dayton, OH and investigated the effect of water table height on plant-mediated methane transport and provided supporting data for the first experiment regarding species-specific differences in methane transport.

Reducing Smoking Among Distracted Individuals: A Preliminary Investigation, Matthew Richard Wallaert , '05, Andrew Ward, T. Mann

Psychology Faculty Works

INTRODUCTION: According to the attentional myopia model, salient cues that serve to inhibit behavior can be especially effective under conditions of limited attention. A small field study tested the implications of this model for smoking reduction. METHODS: Twenty-three undergraduate smokers were exposed to a prominent health warning for 2 5-day experimental phases, with phase order counterbalanced across participants. During one phase, participants simply viewed the warning at regular intervals. During the other phase, participants viewed the warning for the same duration but also simultaneously performed a distracting cognitive load task. RESULTS: Participants in the phase that combined a health warning …

A Comparison Of Techniques Measuring Stress In Birds, Deborah A. O'Dell, Michael A. Carlo, Abigail Kimmitt, Ellen Bikowski, Katherine R. Morris, Andrew Dolby

Virginia Journal of Science

Free-living birds are subjected to both external and internal stresses which can affect their health, activity, and reproductive success. To study stress in free living birds, they must be captured in nets and handled by the researcher to take blood samples for commonly used measures of stress, an activity which itself can induce stress and confound results. This study compares the effects of handling time on three different measures of stress: levels of the stress hormone corticosterone (CORT), levels of Heat Shock Protein 60 (HSP 60) and the ratio of heterophils to lymphocytes (H/L ratio) in tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor …

Acute Pancreatitis, Laura Payne Oct 2014

Acute Pancreatitis, Laura Payne

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Acute pancreatitis is a common diagnosis seen in intensive care units worldwide. The incidence of pancreatitis has increased over the last decade. It ranks third amongst the gastrointestinal diseases resulting in hospital admissions. The destructive complications of pancreatitis make it a life-threatening disease. If pancreatitis progresses to the severe form the mortality rate significantly increase from one percent to upwards of thirty percent. Pancreatitis is associated with high rates of morbidity, mortality, and prolonged hospital admissions(Goozen, Besselink, Santroort, & Bollen, 2013). An increased understanding of the pathophysiology of pancreatitis has changed the approach to treatment from early surgical treatment to …
