The Post-Termination Rhetoric Of The American Restoration Movement, Jonathan Franklin Woodall Feb 2014

The Post-Termination Rhetoric Of The American Restoration Movement, Jonathan Franklin Woodall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation provides a rhetorical analysis of the post-termination rhetoric produced in the book The Living Pulpit of the Christian Church shortly after the termination of the American Restoration Movement in 1866. The termination event consisted of two happenings in the same year, the death of the movement’s rhetorical leader Alexander Campbell and the end of the Civil War. While several rhetorical studies focus on Alexander Campbell, this work focuses on the management of his influence after he died as the Movement faced new rhetorical problems in the reconstruction postwar period. The Living Pulpit claimed to celebrate the Movement’s unity, …

Cornerstone Of Zion: The Archaeology Of The Latter-Day Saints, Matthew Lee Andersen Jan 2014

Cornerstone Of Zion: The Archaeology Of The Latter-Day Saints, Matthew Lee Andersen

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I examine the archaeology of religion at Nauvoo, Illinois, of the Latter-day Saints. Despite the many contributions of central figures of archaeology to the study of religion, many more steps must be taken to ensure the most effective and respectful methodology possible. Scriptures of the Latter-day Saints, some of their firsthand accounts of persecution and some scholarly work establish the central questions of the thesis. The excavations of nineteenth-century Nauvoo, Illinois, provide a context for the discussion of the study of religion through material culture. The work of three central figures in the archaeology of religion demonstrates …

Sex And Sexuality In Formerly Ultra-Orthodox Jews : Defining Sexual Health, Abigail R. Hurvitz-Prinz Jan 2014

Sex And Sexuality In Formerly Ultra-Orthodox Jews : Defining Sexual Health, Abigail R. Hurvitz-Prinz

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This is an exploratory, qualitative study of interviews with 11 individuals who selfidentify as formerly Ultra-Orthodox from the United States and Israel. It is an examination of the unique dynamics and difficulties faced by formerly Ultra-Orthodox Jews as they transition into the secular world, especially around sexual health. This thesis distills some of the specific ways in which formerly Ultra-Orthodox Jews understand their own sexuality, how they would define "healthy" and "unhealthy" sexuality, and what they thought of those experiences. This thesis offers guidance to practitioners so that they may better serve these clients with increased attunement to issues of …

Why Aren't More Heathens Eco-Pagan Vegetarians? The Intersection Of Gender, Politics, And Spiritual Environmentalism, Kristen An Horton Jan 2014

Why Aren't More Heathens Eco-Pagan Vegetarians? The Intersection Of Gender, Politics, And Spiritual Environmentalism, Kristen An Horton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neo-Paganism, a nature-based new religious movement, provides a rich backdrop for the study of spiritual environmentalism. This ethnographic project analyzes the dynamic interconnectedness of neo-paganism and environmentalism, or "eco-paganism," and how Heathenry reframes the natural world using interpretations of Old Norse lore. A Heathen's connection to nature and how this connection is incorporated into his/her daily life supports the idea of environmentalism, yet their patriarchal and conservative political beliefs devalue environmentalism. My focus is on the feminization of the environment and vegetarianism to such a degree that Heathens view these movements as radicalized liberal tree hugging hobbies and how these …

The Making And Unmaking Of An Autocrat: Edwin Eells And The Skokomish Reservation, 1871-1885, Adam Bradford Griffith Jan 2014

The Making And Unmaking Of An Autocrat: Edwin Eells And The Skokomish Reservation, 1871-1885, Adam Bradford Griffith

All Master's Theses

Much has been written about Ulysses S. Grant's Indian Peace Policy. This paper will examine the progress of its implementation on the Skokomish Reservation in Washington Territory through the work of Indian Agent Edwin Eells and analyze the likely causes of his autocratic style of management. The paper will show that Eells' professional mindset was modeled by missionary parents with a tradition of intense, narrowly focused religious commitment and influenced general white racism towards Indians. However, while the peace policy was based on an earlier European colonial model, the paper will also show that while Eells attempted to exert his …

Joseph F. Smith: The Father Of Modern Mormonism, Alexander R. Harrison

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Joseph F. Smith (1838-1918) was the father of modern Mormonism. Nephew of the founding Prophet, President Joseph Smith Jr. (1805-1844), Joseph F. Smith was the sixth president of the Mormon Church. During his presidency (1901-1918), he redefined Mormonism. He helped change the perception of what a Mormon was, both inside and outside the faith. He did so by organizing the structure of the faith theologically, historically, ideologically, and institutionally. In doing this, he set the tone for what Mormonism would become, and set a standard paradigm for the world of what a Mormon is. Joseph F. Smith became the second …

Messianic Jewish Liturgical Practices, Elizabeth Ames Jan 2014

Messianic Jewish Liturgical Practices, Elizabeth Ames

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis explores the current liturgical practices of mainstream Messianic Judaism in the United States using literary and ethnographic research. It examines the historical, biblical, and theological basis for the worship practices used. The origins of their worship practices are evaluated to ascertain whether they reflect charismatic Christian, Jewish denominational or biblical practice. A combination of literary research and qualitative research are used to define the movement; give a brief but comprehensive history of it; and, finally, explain and examine its worship practices. Leaders of the Messianic movement were interviewed for the qualitative research. The findings revealed that a distinction …

Seeking A Comprehensive Worldview: The Religious Seeker In The Modern World, Michael Gregory

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Anecdotally, the casual observer of anthropological phenomenon may be led to believe that every human is basically the same. Indeed, many may assume that groups of people possess identical beliefs, religions, and expressions that hardly vary across different cultures and generations. Throughout the plethora of different cultures and the countless varieties of religious expression and experience it may seem that all of humanity is merely following the same lifestyles and worldviews as their parents and ancestors with very little change save for the gradual evolution in society. A religious studies scholar, or any scholar of the humanities, however, may notice …

Rhetorical Ripples: The Church Of The Subgenius, Kenneth Burke & Comic, Symbolic Tinkering, Lee A. Carleton Jan 2014

Rhetorical Ripples: The Church Of The Subgenius, Kenneth Burke & Comic, Symbolic Tinkering, Lee A. Carleton

Theses and Dissertations

Humor has long been an effective way to engage difficult sociopolitical topics in a way that avoids polemical confrontation and provides opportunity for pleasure, catharsis and self-knowledge. In the context of today’s polarized politics and protest, creative satirical performance that deploys “symbolic tinkering” can provide a “comic frame of reference” that, according to Kenneth Burke, more effectively conveys its message while providing reflexive insight. The satirical Church of the SubGenius naturally practices this rhetorical frame in their multimedia creations. Using the lens of Burke’s Attitudes Toward History, this essay is an analysis of SubGenius rhetoric with a focus on …
