Communication Sciences and Disorders Newsletter

The 2013-2014 academic year has been filled with memorable events. As you read, I think you will get a sense of how our department has grown and how many things we are grateful for. First, this academic year brought us 20 new graduate students to add to the 19 we already had. Students coming from approximately 16 different undergraduate programs have filled the halls with activity. The clinical educators, faculty and staff welcomed all of them and have enjoyed working with them. We will be reluctant to see our 2 nd year students leave us in May, but we look …

Background

There is a huge interest by faith-based organizations (FBOs) in sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere in HIV prevention interventions that build on the religious aspects of being. Reclaiming The Kingdom Of God Metaphor For The Twenty-First-Century Church, Timothy R. Willson Mar 2014

Reclaiming The Kingdom Of God Metaphor For The Twenty-First-Century Church, Timothy R. Willson

Doctor of Ministry

In this dissertation I will argue that an egocentric eschatology (preoccupation with what happens to the individual at the moment of death) has unwittingly trumped the importance of incarnating the Kingdom of God in this present world. It is my assertion that a better understanding of Kingdom of God theology and the promotion of its priority will inspire Christian discipleship leading to reformation and renewal in the church. For this to happen, we must fundamentally renovate our definition and articulate the meaning of “Kingdom of God” as His sovereign reign and rule over a people He has called out, set …

Mapping The Path To Philippine Reproductive Rights Legislation: Signs Of Progress Amidst Obstacles, Sharmila Parmanand Feb 2014

Mapping The Path To Philippine Reproductive Rights Legislation: Signs Of Progress Amidst Obstacles, Sharmila Parmanand

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

While the Philippines is a signatory to multiple international conventions that affirm women’s reproductive rights, attempts to enact legislation to promote a comprehensive national framework for modern family planning and evidence-based sex education have been thwarted by Catholic bishops, lay groups, and conservative politicians for over a decade. Partially as a result of this, the Philippines’ reproductive health indicators are dismal relative to its neighbors’. This paper examines the debates around the Reproductive Healthcare law, whose constitutionality is currently being challenged by conservative groups in the Philippine Supreme Court, and the bargaining processes that characterized the passage of the law. …

Delayed Repair Of Myelomeningoceles, Joseph C. Watson, Gary Tye, John D. Ward

Neurosurgery Publications

Objective: Myelomeningocele is a defect that is typically surgically repaired within the first few days of life in developed countries to minimize the risk of meningitis. Methods: 10 years experience in 97 patients with the delayed (>6 months) repair of myelomeningoceles was the basis of this report. Results: Repair technique in a child with a myelomeningocele that was not repaired …

Healthcare professionals increasingly report interest in global health and participation in international healthcare delivery. Growth opportunities exist for trainees to improve knowledge, skills and attitudes through international experiences. In 2010, the first resident took part in an international, exchange elective between The George Washington University’s Department of Anesthesiology in Washington, DC and La Universidad de San Francisco’s Department of Anesthesiology in Quito, Ecuador.
