Considerations of how gender-related factors influence smoking first appeared over 20 years ago in the work of critical and feminist scholars. This scholarship highlighted the need to consider the social and cultural context of women's tobacco use and the relationships between smoking and gender inequity. Parallel research on men's smoking and masculinities has only recently emerged with some attention being given to gender influences on men's tobacco use. Since that time, a multidisciplinary literature addressing women and men's tobacco use has spanned the social, psychological and medical sciences. To incorporate these gender-related factors into tobacco reduction and cessation interventions, our …

Master's Projects and Capstones

Prevention is the key to public health and immunizations is one of the most effective and efficient means of protection against infectious diseases. The California Immunization Coalition (CIC) is a public-private partnership whose mission is dedicated to achieving and maintaining full immunization protection for all Californians to promote health and prevent serious illness. In order to improve immunization rates, analysis of needs is a primary focus of CIC; immunization rates for both children and adults remain low, due to compounding factors such as rising personal belief exemptions, mistrust of government and doctors, and lack of strong provider recommendations. To address …

Since its advent in the 1970s, the notion of communicative competence (CC) has a tremendous influence on English language teaching, trends, theories, models, and paradigms. Since the 1970s, applied linguists, second language acquisition (SLA) researchers and educationalists have accepted the notion of communicative competence (CC) as the underpinning theory of second language acquisition, the objective of communicative language teaching approach (CLT), and as a measurement of language learner’s proficiency. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inclusion, teaching and testing of the features of the notion of communicative competence (CC) in teaching the oral skills to the English …

How Disgust Affects Romantic Attraction: How Our Moods Affect Our Judgments Of Attractiveness, Nicholas Phelan Dec 2014

How Disgust Affects Romantic Attraction: How Our Moods Affect Our Judgments Of Attractiveness, Nicholas Phelan

Theses

Facial attractiveness is an important part of our initial judgments of people and in our ability to determine their compatibility as a mating partner. Just as mating is evolutionarily important, the emotion disgust is one of the most evolutionarily beneficial emotions as it helps keep us away from poisonous and possibly infectious substances or foods. We instinctively avoid people with facial scars and other facial deformities because these are seen as a sign of illness or generally poor well-being. Facial attraction is one component of how we choose a mate. The current experiment examined whether or not being disgusted created …

A Tale Of Two Cities: Differences In Wine-Drinking Habits In Nice And London, Lacey S. Gibson Dec 2014

A Tale Of Two Cities: Differences In Wine-Drinking Habits In Nice And London, Lacey S. Gibson

Honors Theses

The French Paradox is the theory that, despite consumption of classically-condoned fatty foods, the French remain in excellent health in comparison with citizens of other nations. This notion has been the subject of worldwide media fascination with publication of a plethora of journal articles and novels. A growing body of evidence supports a role for moderate consumption of wine in conferring health benefits. The role of wine in health may be especially prevalent in the French Riviera, a region whose regime is dominated by the French-Mediterranean Diet. I sought to determine the role of wine in the French Paradox by …

The Role Of Chemokine Receptor Cxcr7 With Egfr In Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation, Nicole Salazar

Open Access Dissertations

Recent advances have revealed a significant contribution of chemokines and their receptors in tumor growth, survival after chemotherapy and organ-specific metastasis. The CXC chemokine receptor-7 (CXCR7) is the latest chemokine receptor implicated in cancer. Although over expressed in breast cancer cell lines and tumor tissues, its mechanism of action in breast cancer (BrCa) growth and metastasis was not clear. Studies in other cancers have implicated CXCR7 in cell proliferation, anti-apoptotic activity and cell-cell adhesion. The present study was initiated to examine the pattern of CXCR7 expression and its role in regulation of growth signaling in breast cancer. The contribution of …

The lack of progress in reducing health disparities suggests that new approaches are needed if we are to achieve meaningful, equitable, and lasting reductions. Current scientific paradigms do not adequately capture the complexity of the relationships between environment, personal health and population level disparities. The public health exposome is presented as a universal exposure tracking framework for integrating complex relationships between exogenous and endogenous exposures across the lifespan from conception to death. It uses a social-ecological framework that builds on the exposome paradigm for conceptualizing how exogenous exposures “get under the skin”. The public health exposome approach has led our …

Exploring The Intersection Between Folk And Conventional Medicine In Albany, Kentucky, Chloe J. Brown Dec 2014

Exploring The Intersection Between Folk And Conventional Medicine In Albany, Kentucky, Chloe J. Brown

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Approximately 60% of patients surveyed (in Albany, KY) practice folk medicine, which suggests that a significant segment of the population may practice folk medicine. Patients typically use folk medical treatments concurrently with conventional medical treatments; while the interaction of these treatments is generally innocuous or positive, folk medical treatments can sometimes be harmful, lead to negative interactions with other drugs prescribed by a conventional medical professional. Since folk medicine and conventional medicine frequently interact, it is important for medical professionals to be aware of and address folk medical practices in a conventional medical environment. In order to better address folk …

"If You Have No Men, You Have No War!”: A Critical Overview Of Edgar Selwyn's Men Must Fight (1933), Ryan R. Copping

Cinesthesia

ABSTRACT: Edgar Selwyn’s Men Must Fight (1933) is an obscure yet culturally relevant science fiction drama. An atypical film from its era, the movie has an unusual subject for a Classical Hollywood film- gender socialization. The film didactically argues that wars are inevitable because men are inherently violent, and that, conversely, world peace world occur if women were in power, a possibility that appears to be regrettably impossible. It is also remarkably prescient in predicting that World War II would begin in 1940, only one year off from the German invasion of Poland. This paper combines a close content analysis …

An Apartment Of One’S Own: Personal Initiative And Private Ownership In Frances Ha, Anna Bowles Dec 2014

An Apartment Of One’S Own: Personal Initiative And Private Ownership In Frances Ha, Anna Bowles

Cinesthesia

In “Ideology, Genre, Auteur,” Robin Wood says that by approaching film through the framework of ideological theory, we can become sensitized to “the opposing pulls, the tensions, of one’s world (593).” Even in a film that is not explicitly political, these tensions can find expression. In Frances Ha (Baumbach 2012), a young woman struggles to chase her dream while also staying afloat in the harsh landscape of New York City. Until near the end of the film, it seems that Frances might float forever. The supports that Americans used to take for granted are no longer apparent. Having lost her …

Ifn-Γ Causes Aplastic Anemia By Altering Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cell Composition And Disrupting Lineage Differentiation, Fan Ching Lin, Megan Karwan, Bahara Saleh, Deborah L. Hodge, Tim Chan, Kimberly C. Boelte, Jonathan R. Keller, Howard A. Young Dec 2014

Ifn-Γ Causes Aplastic Anemia By Altering Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cell Composition And Disrupting Lineage Differentiation, Fan Ching Lin, Megan Karwan, Bahara Saleh, Deborah L. Hodge, Tim Chan, Kimberly C. Boelte, Jonathan R. Keller, Howard A. Young

United States Public Health Resources

Aplastic anemia (AA) is characterized by hypocellular marrow and peripheral pancytopenia. Because interferon gamma (IFN-γ) can be detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of AA patients, it has been hypothesized that autoreactive T lymphocytes may be involved in destroying the hematopoietic stem cells. We have observed AA-like symptoms in our IFN-γ adenylate-uridylate-rich element (ARE)-deleted (del) mice, which constitutively express a low level of IFN-γ under normal physiologic conditions. Because no T-cell autoimmunity was observed, we hypothesized that IFN-γ may be directly involved in the pathophysiology of AA. In these mice, we did not detect infiltration of T cells in bone …

The Role Of Violence Within And Across Self-Identified Gang Youth, J. Michael Vecchio Dec 2014

The Role Of Violence Within And Across Self-Identified Gang Youth, J. Michael Vecchio

Dissertations

Whether actual (i.e., direct and vicarious victimization) or anticipated (i.e., fear of crime and perceived risk of victimization) violence, gang youth commonly discuss violence in terms of having an important role in both their gang experiences and daily lives. In particular, violence can play an important role within the specific stages of the gang experience – 1) joining, 2) active membership, and 3) leaving. This includes the importance of protection from violence as a common motivator for joining, the utility of violence as a means of building cohesion between active gang members, as well as the importance of exposure to …

Family-Of-Origin Characteristics Of Men Who Engage Regularly In Sexually Addictive Behavior, Mark Stephen Pfuetze

Dissertations

The present study surveyed men to assess whether any correlations existed between a man’s sexually addictive behavior and how his family-of-origin addressed sexuality along with demographic factors. A total of 374 male participants (18 years or older) provided complete data sets via the online survey located on SurveyMonkey. The main research question for this study was as follows: Is there a relationship between demographic variables or family factors: (a) negative attitudes and communication about sexuality in one’s family-of-origin, (b) exposure to sexual stimuli in one’s family-of-origin, and (c) open sexual discussion in one’s family-of-origin, and sexual addiction. All three of …

An Evidence-Based Approach To A Replacement Hospital Training Curriculum, Mark D. Beck Dec 2014

An Evidence-Based Approach To A Replacement Hospital Training Curriculum, Mark D. Beck

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Creation of a training and educational curriculum for a new or replacement facility is daunting in its own right, but without a repository of organizational knowledge cataloging the transfer of tacit to explicit knowledge from the organizations previous library of facility openings, the task becomes Herculean, with as many tasks and cast of characters as the original myths. Navigating the shoals, eddies and tides of the various aspects of this project revealed the need for a comprehensive knowledge management solution to training that is coupled with healthcare design principles and initiatives. This purpose of the DNP project is about the …

Moral Anxiety, Mortal Terror: Considering Spielberg, Post-9/11, Jake T. Bart

Cinesthesia

In the wake of 9/11, a defining moment in the young 21st century, Spielberg’s thematic concerns undergo a marked evolution. As film historian Joseph McBride noted, “(n)o other American artist confronted the key events of the first decade of the century with such sustained and ambitious treatment” (450). Together, Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005), Munich (2005), and Minority Report (2002) create an informal trilogy, each exploring a different facet of American shock and anxiety in the War on Terror era.

Many healthcare organizations are faced with the challenge of complying with an unfunded mandate to provide language services free of charge to individuals with limited English proficiency or those who are deaf or hard of hearing. One method of increasing efficiencies and reducing disparities for these vulnerable populations is to provide access to remote audio/video interpreters on a shared network. The Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN) is a non-profit organization based in California that comprises more than forty member hospitals and offers service in twenty languages. To support the need for on-going professional development of HCIN’s interpreters, a front-end analysis …

Foreign Investments And The Market For Law, Susan Franck Dec 2014

Foreign Investments And The Market For Law, Susan Franck

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In this Article, Professors O'Hara O'Connor and Franck adapt and extend Larry Ribstein's positive framework for analyzing the role of jurisdictional competition in the law market. Specifically, the authors provide an institutional framework focused on interest group representation that can be used to balance the tensions underlying foreign investment law, including the desire to compete to attract investments and countervailing preferences to retain domestic policy-making discretion. The framework has implications for the respective roles of BITs and investment contracts as well as the inclusion and interpretation of various foreign investment provisions.
