Children’S Rights Online: Challenges, Dilemmas And Emerging Directions, Sonia Livingstone, Brian O'Neill Jan 2014

Children’S Rights Online: Challenges, Dilemmas And Emerging Directions, Sonia Livingstone, Brian O'Neill

Articles

Although it is widely held that a more inclusive and trusted internet can support a competitive knowledge economy, a digitally skilled labour force, civic participation and a pluralistic media sector, governments and regulators have tended to avoid intervening directly to achieve these aims, believing that industry is best positioned to respond to the fast pace of change in information and communication technologies (ICT).This reflects a wider policy shift away from top-down government measures towards flexible, dispersed and indirect forms of governance, encompassing industry self-regulation as well as elements of cooperation or co-regulation with relevant state agencies.

Restructuring Irish Higher Education Through Collaboration And Merger., Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2014

Restructuring Irish Higher Education Through Collaboration And Merger., Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn

Books/Book chapters

Irish higher education has been undergoing significant change, provoked by the global financial crisis and its particular manifestation in Ireland. The demand for higher education is rising at the same time that public funding is declining. In response, mergers and strategic alliances, including regional clusters, of higher education institutions has become a key component of the strategy to better position Irish higher education for greater efficiency, enhanced quality, improved competitiveness and visibility, and clearer alignment with national policy objectives. This chapter traces these developments. It describes the socio-economic and policy context underpinning developments in Irish higher education since the 1970s, …

Ireland, Brian O'Neill Jan 2014

Ireland, Brian O'Neill

Books/Book chapters

Media literacy education in Ireland despite being under-resourced and relatively new to the public policy arena, builds on a long tradition and a solid foundation of critical engagement, creative activity and practical implementation. From a traditional position of protectionism in Irish cultural and educational policy, media literacy has rapidly moved to embrace new opportunities for greater participation and creative endeavour.

Western Leveraged Pedagogy Of Central And Eastern Europe: Discourses Of Homophobia, Tolerance, And Nationhood, R Kulpa Jan 2014

Western Leveraged Pedagogy Of Central And Eastern Europe: Discourses Of Homophobia, Tolerance, And Nationhood, R Kulpa

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This article focuses on the relations between the two geo-temporal categories - Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and West/Europe - in discussions about sexual politics, homophobia, tolerance, and nationhood. It contributes to the existing literature about homonationalism and sexual nationalisms by introducing CEE to the debate's geographical loci, so far mostly invested in West/Europe and its relations to Islam. It argues that it is important to consider CEE in sexual nationalism debates because of its framing as the European (homophobic) Other in the emerging discourses of 'homoinclusive Europe'. This article introduces the concept of leveragedpedagogy, which captures the specificity of …

Toward A Self-Organizing Pre-Symbolic Neural Model Representing Sensorimotor Primitives, J Zhong, A Cangelosi, S Wermter Jan 2014

Toward A Self-Organizing Pre-Symbolic Neural Model Representing Sensorimotor Primitives, J Zhong, A Cangelosi, S Wermter

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The acquisition of symbolic and linguistic representations of sensorimotor behavior is a cognitive process performed by an agent when it is executing and/or observing own and others' actions. According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, these representations develop during the sensorimotor stage and the pre-operational stage. We propose a model that relates the conceptualization of the higher-level information from visual stimuli to the development of ventral/dorsal visual streams. This model employs neural network architecture incorporating a predictive sensory module based on an RNNPB (Recurrent Neural Network with Parametric Biases) and a horizontal product model. We exemplify this model through a …

Bilateral Gain Control; An “Innate Predisposition” For All Sorts Of Things, N Wilkinson, G Metta Jan 2014

Bilateral Gain Control; An “Innate Predisposition” For All Sorts Of Things, N Wilkinson, G Metta

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Empirical studies have revealed remarkable perceptual organization in neonates. Newborn behavioral distinctions have often been interpreted as implying functionally specific modular adaptations, and are widely cited as evidence supporting the nativist agenda. In this theoretical paper, we approach newborn perception and attention from an embodied, developmental perspective. At the mechanistic level, we argue that a generative mechanism based on mutual gain control between bilaterally corresponding points may underly a number of functionally defined "innate predispositions" related to spatial-configural perception. At the computational level, bilateral gain control implements beamforming, which enables spatial-configural tuning at the front end sampling stage. At the …

Variable Response Of Three Trifolium Repens Ecotypes To Soil Flooding By Seawater., Anissia C. White, Timothy D. Colmer, Greg R. Cawthray, Mick E. Hanley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite concerns about the impact of rising sea levels and storm surge events on coastal ecosystems, there is remarkably little information on the response of terrestrial coastal plant species to seawater inundation. The aim of this study was to elucidate responses of a glycophyte (white clover, Trifolium repens) to short-duration soil flooding by seawater and recovery following leaching of salts. METHODS: Using plants cultivated from parent ecotypes collected from a natural soil salinity gradient, the impact of short-duration seawater soil flooding (8 or 24 h) on short-term changes in leaf salt ion and organic solute concentrations was …

Digitizing Practical Production Work For High-Stakes Assessments, Christopher P. Newhouse, Pina Tarricone

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

High-stakes external assessment for practical courses is fraught with problems impacting on the manageability, validity and reliability of scoring. Alternative approaches to assessment using digital technologies have the potential to address these problems. This paper describes a study that investigated the use of these technologies to create and submit digital representations of practical production work and forms of creative expression for summative high-stakes assessment. The study set out to determine the feasibility of students creating and submitting these digital representations for assessment and to identify which of analytical or comparative pairs scoring generated the more reliable scores. This paper proposes …

Tracing The Maddening Effects Of Abuses Of Authority: Rationalities Gone Violent In Mental Health Services And Universities, Marilyn J. Palmer, Dyann Ross Jan 2014

Tracing The Maddening Effects Of Abuses Of Authority: Rationalities Gone Violent In Mental Health Services And Universities, Marilyn J. Palmer, Dyann Ross

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Organisations such as mental health systems and universities can be places where violence is part of the business as usual and hence taken-for-granted functionality of the workplaces. The paper challenges dominant perceptions of who is mad and what is dangerous to unsettle the largely unquestioned legitimacy of indirect and mainly, but not always, non-coercive forms of organisational power. To enable this analysis the research and language of domestic violence is presented to help anchor the nature of organisational violence so that it doesn’t get ignored or deferred as non-problematic, as something that just happens somehow separate from peoples’ actions or …

Cloud Security Meets Telemedicine, Michael N. Johnstone Jan 2014

Cloud Security Meets Telemedicine, Michael N. Johnstone

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Medical systems are potentially one domain where security is seen as an impediment to patient care and not as an essential part of a system. This is an issue for safety-critical systems where reliability and trust are essential for successful operation. Cloud computing services offer a seamless means to allow medical data to be transferred from patient to medical specialist, whilst maintaining security requirements. This paper uses a case study to investigate the use of cloud computing in a mobile application to assist with diagnostics for patients with Parkinson Disease. It was found that the developers of the app ignored …

Yummykarachi: Using Real-Time Tweets For Restaurant Recommendations In An Unsafe Location, M. Atif Qureshi, Arjumand Younus, Muhammad Yousuf, Abdul Moiz, Muhammad Saeed, Nasir Touheed, Colm O'Riordan, Gabriella Pasi

Conference proceedings

In this paper the YummyKarachi system is presented; it is a combined restaurant and safe routes recommender system for an unsafe city such as Karachi. YummyKarachi utilizes a hybrid model combining service recommendations with route recommendations in a map-based user interface. It utilizes tweets arriving in real-time to search for danger zones within the city, and it generates restaurant recommendations while taking into account security conditions of the city.

Non-Intrusive Continuous User Authentication For Mobile Devices, Sevasti Karatzouni Jan 2014

Non-Intrusive Continuous User Authentication For Mobile Devices, Sevasti Karatzouni

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The modern mobile device has become an everyday tool for users and business. Technological advancements in the device itself and the networks that connect them have enabled a range of services and data access which have introduced a subsequent increased security risk. Given the latter, the security requirements need to be re-evaluated and authentication is a key countermeasure in this regard. However, it has traditionally been poorly served and would benefit from research to better understand how authentication can be provided to establish sufficient trust. This thesis investigates the security requirements of mobile devices through literature as well as acquiring …

Enhancing Usability Using Automated Security Interface Adaptation (Asia), Zarul Fitri Zaaba Jan 2014

Enhancing Usability Using Automated Security Interface Adaptation (Asia), Zarul Fitri Zaaba

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Many users are now significantly dependent upon computer application. Whilst many aspects are now used very successfully, an area in which usability difficulties continue to be encountered is in relation to security. Thus can become particularly acute in situations where users are required to interact and make decisions, and a key context here is typically when they need to respond to security warnings. The current implementation of security warnings can often be considered as an attempt to offer a one size fits all solution. However, it can be argued that many implementations are still lacking the ability to provide meaningful …

Supporting Learning By Tracing Personal Knowledge Formation, Witold Thaul Jan 2014

Supporting Learning By Tracing Personal Knowledge Formation, Witold Thaul

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Internet-based and mobile technologies enable new ways of learning. They offer us new possibilities to access an enormous amount of knowledge at any time and everywhere. Among many advantages, the adaptations require a rethinking of our previous learning behaviour patterns and processes. The challenge for students is no longer to get access to information and knowledge, but to select the right one and to deal with the information and knowledge overflow. The aim of this research is to define, design and validate an advanced concept to support the contemporary learning processes. Therefore, the requirements for a new approach have been …

Service Composition Based On Sip Peer-To-Peer Networks, Armin Lehmann Jan 2014

Service Composition Based On Sip Peer-To-Peer Networks, Armin Lehmann

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Today the telecommunication market is faced with the situation that customers are requesting for new telecommunication services, especially value added services. The concept of Next Generation Networks (NGN) seems to be a solution for this, so this concept finds its way into the telecommunication area. These customer expectations have emerged in the context of NGN and the associated migration of the telecommunication networks from traditional circuit-switched towards packet-switched networks. One fundamental aspect of the NGN concept is to outsource the intelligence of services from the switching plane onto separated Service Delivery Platforms using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to provide the …

Personalising Information Security Education, Shuhaili Talib Jan 2014

Personalising Information Security Education, Shuhaili Talib

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Whilst technological solutions go a long way in providing protection for users online, it has been long understood that the individual also plays a pivotal role. Even with the best of protection, an ill-informed person can effectively remove any protection the control might provide. Information security awareness is therefore imperative to ensure a population is well educated with respect to the threats that exist to one’s electronic information, and how to better protect oneself. Current information security awareness strategies are arguably lacking in their ability to provide a robust and personalised approach to educating users, opting for a blanket, one-size-fits-all …

Strain Field Analysis On Montserrat (W.I.) As Tool For Assessing Permeable Flow Paths In The Magmatic System Of Soufrière Hills Volcano, Stefanie Hautmann, Fred Witham, Thomas Christopher, Paul Cole, Alan T. Linde, I. Selwyn Sacks, R. Stephen J. Sparks Jan 2014

Strain Field Analysis On Montserrat (W.I.) As Tool For Assessing Permeable Flow Paths In The Magmatic System Of Soufrière Hills Volcano, Stefanie Hautmann, Fred Witham, Thomas Christopher, Paul Cole, Alan T. Linde, I. Selwyn Sacks, R. Stephen J. Sparks

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractStrain dilatometers have been operated on the volcanic island of Montserrat (West Indies) for more than a decade and have proven to be a powerful technique to approach short‐term dynamics in the deformational field in response to pressure changes in the magmatic system of the andesitic dome‐building Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV). We here demonstrate that magmatic activity in each of the different segments of the SHV magmatic system (shallow dyke‐conduit, upper and lower magma chambers) generates a characteristic strain pattern that allows the identification of operating sources in the plumbing system based on a simple scheme of amplitude ratios. We …

Towards A Model For Integrating Management And Communications Theory In Sustainability/Csr Research, Lisa Koep, Aidan O'Driscoll

Conference papers

To answer the question of how organisations should communicate effectively their sustainability and CSR claims, this paper adopts a broadened integrative approach. It proposes a model to identify and assess the linkages and relationships between the management of sustainability/CSR – in particular, the stage of a firm’s adoption of sustainability/CSR principles and practice – and the type and approach of marketing and corporate communications most appropriate and efficacious for this stage. The paper identifies the substantial body of work currently available on the management and communication of sustainability/CSR. Further, it highlights the importance of understanding the ethical and philosophical underpinnings …

Situating Men Within Local Terrain: A Sociological Perspective On Consumption Practices, Deirdre Duffy Jan 2014

Situating Men Within Local Terrain: A Sociological Perspective On Consumption Practices, Deirdre Duffy

Conference papers

The aim of this paper is to explore how young men, operating within influential discursive regimes, construct their identity projects and come to know themselves, through their engagement with consumption and leisure practices. Foucauldian theory is drawn upon to conceptualise men as intertwined within their social environs, the recipients of socio-cultural inscription. By situating the micro-social context of the male consumer in a larger socio-cultural context, this study endeavours to go beyond consumer narratives to incorporate the influence of market and social systems on individuals’ identity work. The two discursive practices explored include: hometown community and Gaelic sport. Findings show …

Offering Minority Communities Equal Opportunities Through Entrepreneurship, Thomas M. Cooney Jan 2014

Offering Minority Communities Equal Opportunities Through Entrepreneurship, Thomas M. Cooney

Articles

A substantial body of research has been undertaken in recent years giving prominence to the additional and distinctive challenges faced by female entrepreneurs and by ethnic entrepreneurs. However, other groups of minority entrepreneurs have received relatively little attention and so remain underexplored within entrepreneurship literature. This article introduces some of these minority communities (Ex–Prisoners, Disabled People, Travellers/Gypsies, Grey and Gay) and highlights the research opportunities that exist for entrepreneurship academics who might wish to analyse such ‘silent’ minorities. These communities are all relatively large in terms of population numbers, require tailored support to overcome distinctive economic, social and personal obstacles, …
