Rethinking Coalitions: Anti-Pornography Feminists, Conservatives, And Relationships Between Collaborative Adversarial Movements, Nancy Whittier Nov 2014

Rethinking Coalitions: Anti-Pornography Feminists, Conservatives, And Relationships Between Collaborative Adversarial Movements, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Publications

Social movements interact in a wide range of ways, yet we have only a few concepts for thinking about these interactions: coalition, spillover, and opposition. Many social movements interact with each other as neither coalition partners nor opposing movements. In this article, I argue that we need to think more broadly and precisely about the relationships between movements and suggest a framework for conceptualizing noncoalitional interaction between movements. Although social movements scholars have not theorized such interactions, “strange bedfellows” are not uncommon. They differ from coalitions in form, dynamics, relationship to larger movements, and consequences. I first distinguish types of …

Experimentally Evaluating Statistical Patterns Of Offending Typology For Burglary: A Replication Study, Lance Edwin Gilmore Nov 2014

Experimentally Evaluating Statistical Patterns Of Offending Typology For Burglary: A Replication Study, Lance Edwin Gilmore

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study used a quasi-experiment in order to evaluate the effect the SPOT-burglary profile on burglary arrest rates. A single police agency split into three different districts was used for the quasi-experiment. The SPOT-burglary profile was implemented in one district, while leaving the other two as control groups. The differences between the districts were controlled for using a statistical analysis. Burglary arrest rates were collected each month for all three districts for a period of one year before the implementation, and for six months after the implementation. Results show that the district who received the SPOT-burglary profile raised their burglary …

Love And (M)Other (Im)Possibilities, Summer Renee Cunningham Nov 2014

Love And (M)Other (Im)Possibilities, Summer Renee Cunningham

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a performative interrogation of the disagreement and (dis)interest, communication issues, surrounding motherhood in contemporary U.S. culture. Textual analysis of Mary Kelly's Post-Partum Document (PPD) plays a key role in my inquiry. I juxtapose documentation from my lived experiences and academic projects with Kelly's work to build upon the themes and ideas introduced throughout PPD. This project is guided by the concepts love and (im)possibility, and I will argue that, together, they are central to understanding mothering/caregiving as a site of communication inquiry. Love and (im)possibility are inherent to both mothering and communication, but they also are essential …

Automated Runtime Recovery For Qos-Based Service Composition, Tian Huat Tan, Manman Chen, Étienne André, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Nov 2014

Automated Runtime Recovery For Qos-Based Service Composition, Tian Huat Tan, Manman Chen, Étienne André, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Service composition uses existing service-based applications as components to achieve a business goal. The composite service operates in a highly dynamic environment; hence, it can fail at any time due to the failure of component services. Service composition languages such as BPEL provide a compensation mechanism to rollback the error. But such a compensation mechanism has several issues. For instance, it cannot guarantee the functional properties of the composite service after compensation. In this work, we propose an automated approach based on a genetic algorithm to calculate the recovery plan that could guarantee the satisfaction of functional properties of the …

A Sensitive Question: Asking About Race In A Research Interview, Laura O'Hare Nov 2014

A Sensitive Question: Asking About Race In A Research Interview, Laura O'Hare

The Qualitative Report

Conversations are significant, but often overlooked cultural sites where attitudes, beliefs, and values about race are both reified and challenged. As such, these sites deserve increased scholarly attention (Allen, 2007). We employed Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory as a framework to examine the discursive strategies used by 11 interviewers in a research context as they asked 115 patient participants (taking part in a larger study of patients at a community-based family medicine residency clinic) to identify their race, as well as to identify the discursive strategies used by patient participants who answered this question. Our analysis revealed that in their …

Phenyl Functionalized Sol-Gel Silica Sorbent For Capillary Microextraction And Chromia-Based Sol-Gel Ucon Stationary Phase For Capillary Gas Chromatography, Michael M. Mclean Nov 2014

Phenyl Functionalized Sol-Gel Silica Sorbent For Capillary Microextraction And Chromia-Based Sol-Gel Ucon Stationary Phase For Capillary Gas Chromatography, Michael M. Mclean

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The first chapter of this thesis presents an introduction to sol-gel methodology whose usefulness as a synthetic route will be demonstrated with two applications in chromatography. The first application involves the fabrication of a capillary micro-extraction (CME) device by coating a phenyl functionalized extracting phase on the inner surface of a fused silica capillary for analyte pre-concentration. The device was coupled on-line to a RP-HPLC system and practicality was demonstrated using allergens as target analytes. The allergens chosen as model analytes are typically found in fragrance products and food. Most of the 26 fragrance allergens that are monitored by various …

Estimating The Ages Of Mountain Sucker Catostomus Platyrhynchus From The Black Hills: Precision, Maturation, And Growth, Jason J. Breeggemann, Cari-Ann Hayer, Jacob Krause, Luke D. Schultz, Katie N. Bertrand, Brian D. S. Graeb Nov 2014

Estimating The Ages Of Mountain Sucker Catostomus Platyrhynchus From The Black Hills: Precision, Maturation, And Growth, Jason J. Breeggemann, Cari-Ann Hayer, Jacob Krause, Luke D. Schultz, Katie N. Bertrand, Brian D. S. Graeb

Western North American Naturalist

Mountain Sucker Catostomus platyrhynchus is considered secure across its range, it has been declining in parts of its range, and is listed as a species of greatest conservation need in South Dakota. To our knowledge, no research has identified which calcified structure yields the most precise age estimates for Mountain Sucker and little is known about Mountain Sucker population dynamics. We compared scales, sectioned fin rays, whole otoliths, and polished otoliths to identify which structure provided the most precise age estimates for Mountain Sucker in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Additionally, we quantified recruitment, growth, age and size at …
