Latino Migration To Protestantism: A Historical, Socio-Cultural, Ecclesiastical Analysis, Larry Ortiz
Latino Migration To Protestantism: A Historical, Socio-Cultural, Ecclesiastical Analysis, Larry Ortiz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The “browning of America” in the 21st century has brought about many social changes within the heterogeneous group known as Latinos and among the general U.S. population and its other ethnic groups. One notable change is religious preferences among recent immigrants and second and third generation Latinos in favor of Protestantism. Although Latinos have for many years had a limited presence among Protestant groups, over the last decade or two there has occurred a significant defection from the Roman Catholic Church to evangelicalism in particular. The implications of this are quite unknown to social workers and social scientists but are …

Exploring Factors Associated With Citizens’ Perception Of Their Political Environment: Evidence From Palestine, Najwa S. Safadi, Margaret Lombe
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study explores factors associated with citizens’ perception of their political environment in Palestine (N = 1270). Understanding these factors in this context has potential to enhance knowledge in relation to features that may be associated with dissatisfaction and civil unrest. This knowledge may help inform development of policies with greater potential to improve welfare. Overall, results of this study suggested that gender, government anti-corruption initiatives, and the country’s economic condition are important in explaining appraisal of the political environment as stable or unstable. Implications for welfare and scholarship are discussed.
The Anti-Federalists’ Toughest Challenge: Paper Money, Debt Relief, And The Ratification Of The Constitution, George Van Cleve
The Anti-Federalists’ Toughest Challenge: Paper Money, Debt Relief, And The Ratification Of The Constitution, George Van Cleve
Faculty Articles
During the mid-1780s many American states facing widespread financial and social instability in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War actively managed their economies. They authorized paper money, adopted debtor-relief measures, or both. Several historians of these anti-recession measures conclude that such efforts were beneficial. But despite that, the Constitution, as contemporaries understood it, abrogated state powers to issue paper money or provide debtor relief in Article I, Section 10. During ratification, Anti-Federalists were often silent on Section 10, though there were exceptions and popular support for paper money and debtor relief probably prevented ratification in some states. Anti-Federalists did not …

Gene Electrotransfer Enhanced By Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields, Sigi Guo, Diane L. Jackson, Niculina I. Burcus, Yeong-Jer Chen, Shu Xiao, Richard Heller
Bioelectrics Publications
The impact of nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) on gene electrotransfer has not been clearly demonstrated in previous studies. This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of nsPEFs on the delivery of plasmids encoding luciferase or green fluorescent protein and subsequent expression in HACAT keratinocyte cells. Delivery was performed using millisecond electric pulses (msEPs) with or without nsPEFs. In contrast to reports in the literature, we discovered that gene expression was significantly increased up to 40-fold by applying nsPEFs to cells first followed by one msEP but not in the opposite order. We demonstrated that the effect of nsPEFs …

We begin with a brief historical perspective of first-year experiences and how, through a 30-year journey, that pedagogical innovation recently and literally flipped upside down my approach to produce student learning. Then we will examine the genesis, development, and teaching of my current FYS Water: Economics, Politics and Policy, and why it has been such a successful course at my university. Next, my coauthor will examine the genesis, development, and teaching of his FYS Morality and the Great Recession of 2008-2009, another successful example of the FYS at our university.
With that as a pedagogical foundation, we offer …

Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) secure the health-related needs of an affected patient-client by identifying upstream determinants of health for which the law provides a remedy. Some healthcare professionals have noted key activities of MLPs, including the provision of legal assistance, educating providers about social determinants of health, and advancing policy change by addressing existent laws and regulations that may impede the maintenance of good health.1 Although these efforts are essential, they do not fully capture the potential of MLPs to serve as a locus of research and intervention to strengthen the evidence base to advance individual and population health. Across the …

Limitations Of Nonfinancial Metrics Reported By Social Media Companies, Rob Weitz, Theresa Henry, David Rosenthal
Limitations Of Nonfinancial Metrics Reported By Social Media Companies, Rob Weitz, Theresa Henry, David Rosenthal
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Publicly traded companies in the U.S. are required by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to file annual and quarterly financial statements (form 10-K and form 10-Q respectively). The Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) section of these reports, as per SEC requirements, should include the identification and discussion of nonfinancial performance metrics that are critical to management and important to investors. This paper examines a set of common nonfinancial metrics reported by some well-known social media companies. These metrics include such quantities as number of registered users, monthly average users, and number of unique visitors. The definition and use of …
The Slow Evolution Of Second Amendment Law, Joan H. Miller
The Slow Evolution Of Second Amendment Law, Joan H. Miller
Seattle University Law Review Online
Shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting left twenty children and six adults dead, a public movement ensued. The movement demanded that gun violence be addressed as a public health issue. While the movement led to successful gun control reform in a few states, it was unable to gain any traction in the federal government and had the opposite effect in others states where firearms became easier to own, carry, and conceal. Joan Miller provides an update on changes in the Second Amendment law that have occurred since her Article, The Second Amendment Goes to College, was published in …

The Uncertain Trumpet: Disaster Communications And The Law, Russell V. Randle, Jeffery Reinhardt
Seattle University Law Review Online
Planning for the next disaster is not just a task for first responders. A catastrophic disaster can affect a wide range of industries, such as banking, telecommunications, education, and zoning; and lawyers play a critical role in reducing loss and minimizing liability. By drawing from lessons learned during previous disasters, including terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and environmental catastrophes, Randle and Reinhardt explain the steps lawyers should take to help organizations anticipate problems and create plans to minimize damages.
This Article illustrates how lawyers can help organizations remain in control by maintaining critical communications through multiple system modalities; using those systems …

A Two-Tiered System Of Regulation Is Needed To Preserve The Viability Of Community Banks And Reduce The Risks Of Megabanks, Arthur E. Wilmarth Jr.
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The financial crisis of 2007-2009 and its aftermath have accelerated a consolidation trend that has transformed the U.S. banking system during the past three decades. During that period, the number of community banks and their share of the banking industry’s assets have fallen by more than half, while the largest banks have captured much of the industry’s assets. In responding to the financial crisis, the federal government encouraged further consolidation by adopting extraordinary assistance programs and forbearance measures designed to ensure the survival of the biggest institutions. In contrast, federal officials gave little help to community banks and subjected them …
Characterization Of Metal Transport By The Streptococcus Sanguinis Endocarditis Virulence Factor Ssab, Sarah Brusko
Characterization Of Metal Transport By The Streptococcus Sanguinis Endocarditis Virulence Factor Ssab, Sarah Brusko
UROP Posters
Streptococcus sanguinis, present in the biofilm colonizing human tooth surfaces, may be beneficial in the oral cavity, though it also serves as a causative agent of an extra-oral disease, infective endocarditis. Previous mutagenesis of lipoprotein genes from S. sanguinis strain SK36 identified the SsaB gene as necessary for virulence in a rabbit model of endocarditis. Based on homology, we suspected that SsaB was a metal transporter. A procedure utilizing inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry was optimized and implemented for determination of the concentrations (μg metal per mg of cellular protein) of 17 metals in SK36 and ssaB mutant cell …

Roles And Regulations For Pharmacists In State-Level Disaster Relief Efforts, Rachel Lowe
Honors Theses
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine what expanded roles have been identified for pharmacists by the states in disaster relief efforts, what regulations currently exist for pharmacists in disaster relief efforts in each state, and whether or not disaster relief and public health training should be added to the pharmacy school curriculum. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive design was used to survey fifty-three boards of pharmacy via email and Qualtrics Survey Software. Results: Analysis of the survey results showed that most states lack a disaster preparedness plan and expanded roles for pharmacists in disaster relief efforts, and most …

[Introduction] In March 2014, as part of its community relations service, the U.S. Department of Justice held a community service training for police officers that focused on developing strategies to better prevent and respond to bias crimes against transgender citizens. While the impetus for the training was recognition that this group is disproportionately affected by hate violence (see NCAVP, 2013), attendees of the training also highlighted the tumultuous relationships transgender individuals have had with law enforcement as another impetus for change. Transgender activists and the DOJ lauded the event as an important step for improved relationships between law enforcement and …
