Development And Characterization Of Spiral Additions In A Ceramic Matrix, Andrea Lynn Els
Development And Characterization Of Spiral Additions In A Ceramic Matrix, Andrea Lynn Els
Masters Theses
"A novel spiral architecture was formed using titanium diboride and silicon carbide ceramics as either the spiral or matrix phase. Particulate composites with the same compositions were fabricated to compare to the materials in this study. Spiral additions were formed using powder loaded polymers followed by a single and/or multi-filament co-extrusion. For 25 vol% SiC spiral additions to TiB2, boron nitride was added to the SiC spiral to alter the bonding at the interface and reduce thermal residual stresses. All samples were hot-pressed to near full density at 1980 ⁰C. Hot pressed multi-filament co-extrusion of 2.4 mm / …

Gel Treatment Field Application Survey For Water Shut Off In Production Wells, Jingyi Liao
Masters Theses
"Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) screening criteria are considered as a guideline for candidate evaluation and determination. Not many screening criteria for gel treatment had been published. Some published gel treatment application surveys for water shut off only include limited number of oil fields and locations.
The current work aims to summarize the worldwide gel treatment applications for water shut off in production wells by creating and analyzing a dataset from a variety of sources. This study started from collecting and cleaning the gel treatment application data. All the data were from SPE field publications from 1990 to 2012 and from …
Parental Mediation Of Adolescent Movie Viewing, Larry James Webster Jr.
Parental Mediation Of Adolescent Movie Viewing, Larry James Webster Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Parental mediation of media use by children has been studied extensively as it applies to television and children 12 years old and younger. This study expands the scope of Parental Mediation Theory by applying it to adolescents (age 13-17 years old) and movie viewing. The results of this study show overall parental mediation of adolescent movie viewing is negatively associated with the age of the child. The results show that among parents who mediate movie viewing, restrictive, instructive and social co-viewing mediation strategies are negatively correlated with the age of the adolescent. Third Person Effect is also examined as parental …
Emotional Bond Between The Creator And The Avatar: Changes In Behavioral Intentions To Engage In Alcohol-Related Traffic Risk Behaviors, Hokyung Kim
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines the joint impact of relationship with one's avatar and negative consequences to the avatar on changing behavioral intentions (CBI) in terms of alcohol-impaired driving. Avatars are users' visual self-representation in a virtual world, and play a major role to build the users' digital identity. One hundred eleven participants volunteered to participate in several experimental conditions where the degree of choice of avatar features and the degree of active control of the avatar were manipulated in Second Life, an immersive 3D virtual environment. Participants who were allowed to customize their avatar viewed their avatar more similar and …
Measurements And Transient Multistep Outflow Simulation Of Soil-Water Characteristic Curve For Soils Modified With Biopolymers, Xiaoyi Zhao
Masters Theses
"In recent decades, biopolymers have shown promising applications in soil modification due to its environmental friendly nature. Most of the studies, however, focused on mechanical properties at saturated or unsaturated conditions. The study on unsaturated soil behaviors under controlled pore air and pore water pressures were limited. Soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC), relating water content with matric suction is a key property to evaluate unsaturated soils. With SWCC, other soil properties, such as hydraulic conductivity and shear strength can be estimated. In this study, SWCC of sands modified with different biopolymers were measured with both Tempe cell and Fredlund SWCC device. …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
This study demonstrates that it is sometimes possible to replicate patterns of human teeth in pig skin and determine scientifically that a given injury pattern (bite mark) correlates with the dentitions of a very small proportion of a population dataset, e.g., 5 percent or even 1 percent. The authors recommend building on the template of this research with a sufficiently large database of samples that reflects the diverse world population. They also envision the development of a sophisticated imaging software application that enables forensic examiners to insert parameters for measurement, as well as additional methods of applying force to produce …
Fabrication Of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Transparent Composites Using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding Process, Gregory A. Taylor
Fabrication Of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Transparent Composites Using Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding Process, Gregory A. Taylor
Masters Theses
"The most commonly used transparent material is glass. Traditionally, glass is not desired for applications involving a low weight material while preserving high strength such as aerospace and military applications where armor must also be transparent. Some applications may include aircraft canopies and other vehicle windows. Development of a reliable transparent composite would fill a need for many of these applications where a transparent structure must both be strong and lightweight. A transparent polymer reinforced with a glass fiber fabric is a viable solution. To ensure transparency, both fiber and matrix must match in refractive index.

Over the nearly two de cades since the publication of Academic Capitalism: Politics, Policies, and the Entrepreneurial University (Slaughter and Leslie 1997), the model of academic capitalism has become one of the more widely cited conceptual frameworks in the global literature on higher education. Works in the academic capitalist canon have relied on the two basic understandings of the theory of academic capitalism and the new economy, as articulated by Slaughter and Leslie (1997), Slaughter and Rhoades (2004), and Rhoades and Slaughter (2006). Rhoades and Slaughter (2006) summarize these two conceptual strands as “the increasing engagement of higher education institutions …
State Responsibility For Gender Stereotyping, Barbara Stark
State Responsibility For Gender Stereotyping, Barbara Stark
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Scholars have recently re-discovered Justice Ruth Bader Ginburg’s early anti-stereotyping work. As Cary Franklin notes, Justice Ginsburg’s approach "was grounded not in a commitment to eradicating sex classifications from the law, but in a far richer theory of equal protection involving constitutional limitations on the state’s power to enforce sex-role stereotypes." Some of these scholars believe that this approach holds great promise for issues at the "frontiers of equal protection law" such as same-sex marriage and the work-family conflict. As Ginsburg herself has come to realize, however, anti-stereotyping is only the beginning. This Article explains why anti-stereotyping is insufficient, what …
The Role Of Ethics Audits In Improving Ethical Conduct In Law Firms: An Empirical Examination, Susan Saab Fortney
The Role Of Ethics Audits In Improving Ethical Conduct In Law Firms: An Empirical Examination, Susan Saab Fortney
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
For decades, legal malpractice experts have urged lawyers to implement risk management measures. To assist law firms in doing so, legal malpractice insurers have provided audit services and self-audit materials. The ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct also recognize the importance of policies and procedures as an aspect of a firm’s ethical infrastructure. Specifically, Model Rule 5.1 and state versions of Model Rule 5.1 require that firm principals make reasonable efforts to ensure that the firm has in effect measures to ensure that firm lawyers conform to the rules of professional conduct.
From The Rule Of One To Shared Parenting: Custody Presumptions In Law And Policy, J. Herbie Difonzo
From The Rule Of One To Shared Parenting: Custody Presumptions In Law And Policy, J. Herbie Difonzo
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Child custody presumptions have formed part of Anglo-American law for centuries. Both the paternal preference rule at common law and the tender years doctrine that supplanted it in the nineteenth century signaled the law’s conviction that custody was indivisible: after a marital breakup, children could be entrusted to only one parent, with the other an infrequent visitor. This “rule of one” began to weaken in the last third of the twentieth century, as the movement toward gender equality called attention to the importance of both parents in the care and nurturance of children and loosened the link between gender and …
Measuring Manufacturing: How The Computer And Semiconductor Industries Affect The Numbers And Perceptions, Susan N. Houseman, Timothy J. Bartik, Timothy Sturgeon
Measuring Manufacturing: How The Computer And Semiconductor Industries Affect The Numbers And Perceptions, Susan N. Houseman, Timothy J. Bartik, Timothy Sturgeon
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Growth in U.S. manufacturing’s real value-added has exceeded that of aggregate GDP, except during recessions, leading many to conclude that the sector is healthy and that the 30 percent decline in manufacturing employment since 2000 is largely the consequence of automation. The robust growth in real manufacturing GDP, however, is driven by one industry segment: computers and electronic products. In most of manufacturing, real GDP growth has been weak or negative and productivity growth modest. The extraordinary real GDP growth in computer-related industries reflects prices for computers and semiconductors that, when adjusted for product quality improvements, are falling rapidly. Productivity …

Formerly Manufacturing Entities: Piercing The "Patent Troll" Rhetoric, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga
Formerly Manufacturing Entities: Piercing The "Patent Troll" Rhetoric, Kristen Jakobsen Osenga
Law Faculty Publications
Everyone hates patent trolls-those companies that "hijack somebody else's idea" and use the patents to "extort some money" from companies that actually make things. But, despite the rhetoric, not all patent trolls are created equal. This Article is the first to focus on one type of patent troll the formerly manufacturing entity. These patent trolls used to make or do something in commerce, but now derive all or a significant portion of their income through licensing their intellectual property. Using case study analysis, this Article demonstrates that formerly manufacturing entities do not impose the harms associated with patent trolls more …
Filling The District Of Arizona Vacancies, Carl W. Tobias
Filling The District Of Arizona Vacancies, Carl W. Tobias
Law Faculty Publications
The judicial vacancy crisis must end. The federal bench has experienced nearly a ten percent vacancy rate over an unprecedented four and a half-year period. The substantial number and protracted character of those openings have imposed numerous detrimental effects. These phenomena have delayed the scheduling of jury trials in many civil cases and even propelled termination of some litigation because the Speedy Trial Act requires that criminal matters have precedence. Indeed, the emergency designation has meant that some criminal proceedings were delayed in the Arizona District. The vacancy crisis places additional pressure on sitting judges, particularly the eight senior judges …
The Syntheses, Characterizations, And Applications Of Novel Photo- And Electrochemical Catalysts, Lauren Rae Grabstanowicz
The Syntheses, Characterizations, And Applications Of Novel Photo- And Electrochemical Catalysts, Lauren Rae Grabstanowicz
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigates two separate clean energy applications, emphasizing material applications and electrochemistry techniques. The first section examines environmentally friendly alternatives for water purification to avoid carcinogenic by-products. To diminish such possibilities, research has shifted towards photoelectrochemical catalysts, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), because pure TiO2 has limited absorption in the ultraviolet region. Therefore, Ti3+, a self-dopant, has become an attractive candidate for environmentally friendly alternatives. This dissertation demonstrates a novel oxidation procedure to form self-doped Ti3+ in the bulk of rutile TiO2. A brief overview of the work will be given and supporting data including material, methods, structural characterization, …

High School Teachers' Disciplinary Literacy Knowledge : A Mixed-Method Study, Paula Di Domenico
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This mixed-methods study examines the disciplinary-literacy knowledge that high school English, mathematics, science, and social studies teachers possess and the knowledge and skills on which they rely when planning for instruction. Three hundred and eleven high school teachers completed a survey that measured high school teachers' disciplinary-literacy knowledge; four teachers who completed the survey also participated in a think-aloud of unit design and a semistructured interview. Quantitative data were analyzed via descriptive statistics, factor analysis, a one-way multivariate analysis of variance [MANOVA], and post-hoc tests. Qualitative data were analyzed using three cycles of coding: descriptive codes, axial codes and frequency …
Revisiting The Tax Treatment Of Citizens Abroad: Reconciling Principle And Practice, Michael S. Kirsch
Revisiting The Tax Treatment Of Citizens Abroad: Reconciling Principle And Practice, Michael S. Kirsch
Journal Articles
In an increasingly mobile world, the taxation of citizens living abroad has taken on increased importance. Recent international administrative developments — most notably, the weakening of foreign bank secrecy and expansion of global information sharing norms — have further raised the profile of this issue. While U.S. law traditionally has taxed U.S. citizens living abroad in the same general manner as citizens living in the United States, a number of scholars have proposed abandoning the use of citizenship as a jurisdictional basis to tax. In its place, they would apply residence-based principles — i.e., exercising full taxing rights over U.S. …
Stability Studies Of Membrane Proteins, Cui Ye
Stability Studies Of Membrane Proteins, Cui Ye
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The World Health Organization has identified antimicrobial resistance as one of the top three threats to human health. Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli are intrinsically more resistant to antimicrobials. There are very few drugs either on the market or in the pharmaceutical pipeline targeting Gram-negative pathogens. Two mechanisms, the protection of the outer membrane and the active efflux by the multidrug transporters, play important roles in conferring multidrug resistance to Gram-negative bacteria. My work focuses on two main directions, each aligning with one of the known multidrug resistance mechanisms.
The first direction of my research is in the area …

The Development And Biocompatibility Of Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (Ltcc) For Microfluidic And Biosensor Applications, Jin Luo
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) electronic packaging materials are applied for their electrical and mechanical properties, high reliability, chemical stability and ease of fabrication. Three dimensional features can also be prepared allowing integration of microfluidic channels and cavities inside LTCC modules. Mechanical, optical, electrical, microfluidic functions have been realized in single LTCC modules. For these reasons LTCC is attractive for biomedical microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip systems. However, commercial LTCC systems, optimized for microelectrics applications, have unknown cytocompatibility, and are not compatible with common surface functionalization chemistries.
The first goal of this work is to develop biocompatible LTCC materials for biomedical applications. …
Functionalized Membranes For Environmental Remediation And Selective Separation, Li Xiao
Functionalized Membranes For Environmental Remediation And Selective Separation, Li Xiao
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Membrane process including microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) have provided numerous successful applications ranging from drinking water purification, wastewater treatment, to material recovery. The addition of functional moiety in the membranes pores allows such membranes to be used in challenging areas including tunable separations, toxic metal capture, and catalysis. In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) MF membrane was functionalized with temperature responsive (poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAAm) and pH responsive (polyacrylic acid, PAA) polymers. It’s revealed that the permeation of various molecules (water, salt and dextran) through the membrane can be thermally or pH controlled. The introduction of …

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Automated and continuous processes are the future trends in downstream protein purification. A functionalized nanometer-scale membrane electrode system, mimicking the function of cell wall transporters, can selectively capture genetically modified proteins and subsequently pump them through the system under programmed voltage pulses. Numerical study of the two-step pulse pumping cycles coupled with experimental His-GFP releasing study reveals the optimal 14s/1s pumping/repel pulse pumping condition at 10 mM bulk imidazole concentration in the permeate side. A separation factor for GFP: BSA of 9.7 was achieved with observed GFP electrophoretic mobility of 3.1×10-6 cm2 s-1 V-1 at 10 …
Layer-By-Layer Assemblies For Membrane-Based Enzymatic Catalysis, Andrew R. Tomaino
Layer-By-Layer Assemblies For Membrane-Based Enzymatic Catalysis, Andrew R. Tomaino
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
While considerable progress has been made towards understanding the effect that membrane-based layer-by-layer (LbL) immobilizations have on the activity and stability of enzymatic catalysis, detailed work is required in order to fundamentally quantify and optimize the functionalization and operating conditions that define these properties. This work aims to probe deeper into the nature of transport mechanisms by use of pressure-induced, flow-driven enzymatic catalysis of LbL-functionalized hydrophilized poly(vinyldiene) (PVDF)-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)-glucose oxidase (GOx) membranes. These membranes were coupled in a sealed series following cellulose acetate (CA) membranes for the elimination of product accumulation within the feed-side solution during operation. …

The Perceived Benefits Of Participation In Living And Learning Communities: The Student Perspective, Sally Adams
The Perceived Benefits Of Participation In Living And Learning Communities: The Student Perspective, Sally Adams
Masters Theses
Students' experiences outside the classroom are important to their overall growth and development. Living learning communities (LLC) play a big role in helping to support these areas of growth. Students residing in an LLC are aware of the benefits of the LLC experience and can articulate how their residential environment can help them develop. Non-LLC members find it difficult to define the LLC experience and are not receiving the same benefits. Institutions and residence life often struggle in evaluating and assessing these communities because of the lack of direction and outcomes not clearly being stated. If institutions work to clearly …
