Birth Of A Nation's "Story In The Public Square", Regent Nicholas, Arlene J. Nicholas Jan 2014

Birth Of A Nation's "Story In The Public Square", Regent Nicholas, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Released in 1915, when the Civil War still occupied a significant portion of the American populace's living memory, The Birth of a Nation is ironically a reconstruction era film that aims to deconstruct the memory of any advances and achievements of that period immediately following the war. Griffith framed the rise of the black person toward equality as being what led to the fall of the white man, specifically the southern white man, in America. In the movie there are baseless depictions of black politicians alternately drinking, sleeping, and putting their bare feet on tables in houses of government.

Adeno-Associated Virus (Aav) Transduction Of Primary Human Cd4+T Lymphocytes, Sahar Hussein Kamel Jan 2014

Adeno-Associated Virus (Aav) Transduction Of Primary Human Cd4+T Lymphocytes, Sahar Hussein Kamel

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Development of latent HIV-infected CD4+ T lymphocytes is the major cause of HIV treatment failure. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is an attractive vector for anti-HIV gene therapy due to its lack of pathogenicity, low immunogenicity, and persistent transgene expression. However, a major limitation for AAV gene transfer is the cell-specific tropism of each serotype. Only AAV serotypes 2 and 5 have been investigated in hematopoietic cells, both of these serotypes have shown low transduction efficiency. Since each of the currently described AAV serotypes demonstrate distinct tissue tropism, I hypothesized that other serotypes such as AAV1, 4, 8, or 9 may demonstrate …

Mothers Who Kill Children They Have Adopted, Katherine Elizabeth Sunder

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A mother killing her child is a disturbing and puzzling crime. While extensive research has been conducted on mothers who kill their biological children, little information is known about mothers who kill children they have adopted. Previous research has suggested specific typologies and characteristics of mothers who kill their biological children. The current research reviews these typologies and investigates whether they can be applied to the mothers who kill adopted children. A review of the cases in the United States from 1993 through 2013 that involved mothers who killed children they had adopted was conducted. The similarities and differences between …

Expression Of The Alpha, Beta, And Gamma Subunits Of The Interleukin-2 Receptor By Human Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Sultan Mohammed Alhayyani

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is a member of the cytokine family and contributes to the proliferation, survival, and death of lymphocytes [1]. The interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2) is a tripartite receptor commonly expressed on the surfaces of many lymphoid cells and is composed of three non-covalently associated subunits, alpha (CD25), beta (CD122), and gamma (CD132) [2]. Our laboratory has previously described IL-2 receptor Beta expression by vasculature smooth muscle cells (VSMC) in mice and humans [3]. The current work expands our previous observations by assessing the expression of the alpha and gamma subunits of the IL-2R by VSMCs. Analysis of IL-2R expression …

Full Wave Electromagnetic Simulations Of Terahertz Wire Grid Polarizers And Infrared Plasmonic Wire Gratings, John Cetnar

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of the interaction of terahertz (THz) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) radiation with various periodic sub-wavelength metallic structures in free-space and on dielectric substrates. There are many new and useful applications for both THz and LWIR radiation. Unfortunately, heavy attenuation by the Earth's atmosphere and low output power from THz sources combine to make THz radiation weak and difficult to detect. LWIR is not as prone to atmospheric attenuation as THz radiation. Nevertheless, the detection of LWIR can be improved upon by strengthening the coupling between incoming radiation and LWIR detector systems.

Light passing through periodic …

What role does foreign support play when an insurgent group adopts terrorism? Utilizing both quantitative analysis and in-depth case studies, this thesis examines the effects of foreign support among other commonly cited explanations for an insurgency's adoption of terrorism. In addition to observing the effects of foreign support on the adoption of terrorism, the effects of government regime type, insurgent group goal type, insurgent group strength, and foreign benefactor type are analyzed. After executing a multiple logistic regression analysis of 109 intrastate conflicts occurring from 1972 to 2007 and conducting detailed case studies for the Tamils in Sri Lanka and …

Defining Suffering : African American Young Men And Conduct Disorder, Sascha D. Atkins-Loria Jan 2014

Defining Suffering : African American Young Men And Conduct Disorder, Sascha D. Atkins-Loria

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This paper will discuss the disproportionate overrepresentation of African American young men among those diagnosed with Conduct Disorder. Existing research attributes this disproportionality to a variety of factors but does not incorporate historical or social analysis. This project will endeavor to consider how the historical and enduring stereotype of black men as "criminal" impacts this diagnosing pattern, and explores alternate ways to define and treat behavioral symptomology among young black men. This paper will discuss how stereotypes as well as the fear of being stereotyped impact both client and clinician and affect their interaction, thereby influencing psychological assessment and diagnosis. …

An Uncomfortable Threesome: Permissive Party Joinder, Bittorrent, And Pornography, Evan Hoole Jan 2014

An Uncomfortable Threesome: Permissive Party Joinder, Bittorrent, And Pornography, Evan Hoole

Emory Law Journal

In recent years, media companies have struggled to combat the rampant growth of Internet piracy and the sharing of their copyrighted works. Lately, some copyright holders have taken to suing hundreds of file-sharers in a single suit. These suits were initially unsuccessful, as courts denied joinder of the file-sharers. The rise of a unique file-sharing program called BitTorrent, however, has caused some courts to give copyright holders a new opportunity to successfully file and settle these mass infringement lawsuits. A central issue in many of these suits is whether joinder of the many file-sharing users is appropriate. Disagreement among courts …

Ctrl+Alt+Delete: Does The Bankruptcy Code Need A Reboot? The Eligibility Of Consumer Digital Goods For Liquidation, Gene Goldmintz

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Gene Goldmintz argues that the first-sale doctrine should apply to digital goods. These digital goods are typically sold in single lump sum payments determined by the quantity of the good, as opposed to a licensing fee determined by usage over time. The result is that these transactions are more similar to purchases rather than licenses. The first-sale doctrine should apply despite the naming conventions utilized in the End-User License Agreements accompanying these digital goods and the form-over-substance analysis favored by courts. Even if courts refuse to recognize these transactions as purchases, § 365(f) of the Bankruptcy Code permits the assignment …

The vertebrate gut symbiont Lactobacillus reuteri has diversified into separate clades reflecting host origin. Strains show evidence of host adaptation, but how host-microbe coevolution influences microbial-derived effects on hosts is poorly understood. Emphasizing human-derived strains of L. reuteri, we combined comparative genomic analyses with functional assays to examine variations in host interaction among genetically distinct ecotypes. Within clade II or VI, the genomes of human-derived L. reuteri strains are highly conserved in gene content and at the nucleotide level. Nevertheless, they share only 70-90% of total gene content, indicating differences in functional capacity. Human-associated lineages are distinguished by genes related …

Epidemic Clostridium Difficile Strains Demonstrate Increased Competitive Fitness Compared To Nonepidemic Isolates, Catherine D. Robinson, Jennifer M. Auchtung, James Collins, Robert A. Britton

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Clostridium difficile infection is the most common cause of severe cases of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and is a significant health burden. Recent increases in the rate of C. difficile infection have paralleled the emergence of a specific phylogenetic clade of C. difficile strains (ribotype 027; North American pulsed-field electrophoresis 1 [NAP1]; restriction endonuclease analysis [REA] group BI). Initial reports indicated that ribotype 027 strains were associated with increased morbidity and mortality and might be hypervirulent. Although subsequent work has raised some doubt as to whether ribotype 027 strains are hypervirulent, the strains are considered epidemic isolates that have caused severe …

Effect Of Er Doping On The Structural And Magnetic Properties Of Cobalt-Ferrite, Sateesh Prathapani, M. Vinitha, Tanjore V. Jayaraman, D. Das

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Nanocrystalline particulates of Er doped cobalt-ferrites CoFe(2–x)ErxO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.04), were synthesized, using sol-gel assisted autocombustion method. Co-, Fe-, and Er- nitrates were the oxidizers, and malic acid served as a fuel and chelating agent. Calcination (400–600 °C for 4h) of the precursor powders was followed by sintering (1000 °C for 4 h) and structural and magnetic characterization. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of single phase of spinel for the compositions x = 0, 0.01, and 0.02; and for higher compositions an additional orthoferrite phase formed along with the spinel phase. …

Characterizing Roles For The Glutathione Reductase, Thioredoxin Reductase And Thioredoxin Peroxidase-Encoding Genes Of Magnaporthe Oryzae During Rice Blast Disease, Jessie Fernandez, Richard Wilson

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Understanding how pathogenic fungi adapt to host plant cells is of major concern to securing global food production. The hemibiotrophic rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, cause of the most serious disease of cultivated rice, colonizes leaf cells asymptomatically as a biotroph for 4–5 days in susceptible rice cultivars before entering its destructive necrotrophic phase. During the biotrophic growth stage, M. oryzae remains undetected in the plant while acquiring nutrients and growing cell-to-cell. Which fungal processes facilitate in planta growth and development are still being elucidated. Here, we used gene functional analysis to show how components of the NADPH-requiring glutathione …

Studies On Sensitivity Reduction In Solo And Mixture Treatments And Fungicide-Induced Mutagenesis In Monilinia Fructicola, Guido Schnabel, F. Chen, Sydney E. Everhart, W. C. Bridges, X. Liu

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Three fungicide-sensitive Monilinia fructicola isolates were exposed in weekly transfers of mycelia to a dose gradient of a DMI and a QoI fungicide (azoxystrobin) in solo or mixture treatments and fungicide sensitivity as well as genetic changes were assessed. Isolates showed a faster reduction in sensitivity (higher resistance factors) to azoxystrobin than to SYP-Z048; this process was slower in the mixture treatment. The decrease of fungicide sensitivity was not a heritable trait. Genomic mutagenesis at 8 of 15 microsatellite loci was evidenced in one of three isolates tested after exposure to azoxystrobin. These non-coding regions of the genome either showed …

Plant Defense Suppression Is Mediated By A Fungal Sirtuin During Rice Infection By Magnaporthe Oryzae, Jessie Fernandez, Margarita Marroquin-Guzman, Renu Nandakumar, Sara Shijo, Kathryn M. Cornwell, Gang Li, Richard Wilson

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Crop destruction by the hemibiotrophic rice pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae requires plant defense suppression to facilitate extensive biotrophic growth in host cells before the onset of necrosis. How this is achieved at the genetic level is not well understood. Here, we report that a M. oryzae sirtuin, MoSir2, plays an essential role in rice defense suppression and colonization by controlling superoxide dismutase (SOD) gene expression. Loss of MoSir2 function in Δsir2 strains did not affect appressorial function, but biotrophic growth in rice cells was attenuated. Compared to wild type, Δsir2 strains failed to neutralize plant-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) …

Barrier To Autointegration Factor Becomes Dephosphorylated During Hsv-1 Infection And Can Act As A Host Defense By Impairing Viral Dna Replication And Gene Expression, Augusta Jamin, Prasanth Thunuguntla, April Wicklund, Clinton Jones, Matthew S. Wiebe Jan 2014

Wiebe

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

BAF (Barrier to Autointegration Factor) is a highly conserved DNA binding protein that senses poxviral DNA in the cytoplasm and tightly binds to the viral genome to interfere with DNA replication and transcription. To counteract BAF, a poxviralencoded protein kinase phosphorylates BAF, which renders BAF unable to bind DNA and allows efficient viral replication to occur. Herein, we examined how BAF phosphorylation is affected by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection and tested the ability of BAF to interfere with HSV-1 productive infection. Interestingly, we found that BAF phosphorylation decreases markedly following HSV-1 infection. To determine whether dephosphorylated BAF …

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is the etiologic agent of Johne’s Disease in ruminants. This enteritis has significant economic impact and world wide distribution. Vaccination is one of the most cost effective infectious disease control measures. Unfortunately, current vaccines reduce clinical disease and shedding, but are of limited efficacy and do not provide long-term protective immunity. Several strategies have been followed to mine the MAP genome for virulence determinants that could be applied to vaccine and diagnostic assay developent. In this study, a comprehensive mutant bank of 13,536 MAP K-10 Tn5367 mutants (P>95% )was constructed and screened in …

Influence Of Iron And Aeration On Staphylococcus Aureus Growth, Metabolism, And Transcription, Nagender Ledala, Bo Zhang, Javier Seravalli, Robert Powers, Greg Somerville

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Staphylococcus aureus is a prominent nosocomial pathogen and a major cause of biomaterial-associated infections. The success of S. aureus as a pathogen is due in part to its ability to adapt to stressful environments. As an example, the transition from residing in the nares to residing in the blood or deeper tissues is accompanied by changes in the availability of nutrients and elements such as oxygen and iron. As such, nutrients, oxygen, and iron are important determinants of virulence factor synthesis in S. aureus. In addition to influencing virulence factor synthesis, oxygen and iron are critical cofactors in enzymatic and …

A combined setup of quartz crystal microbalance and generalized ellipsometry can be used to comprehensively investigate complex functional coatings comprising stimuli-responsive polymer brushes and 3D nanostructures in a dynamic, noninvasive in situ measurement. While the quartz crystal microbalance detects the overall change in areal mass, for instance, during a swelling or adsorption process, the generalized ellipsometry data can be evaluated in terms of a layered model to distinguish between processes occurring within the intercolumnar space or on top of the anisotropic nanocolumns. Silicon films with anisotropic nanocolumnar morphology were prepared by the glancing angle deposition technique and further functionalized by …

Parallel Synthesis Of Poly(Amino Ether)-Templated Plasmonic Nanoparticles For Transgene Delivery, James Ramos, Thrimoorthy Potta, Olivia Scheideler, Kaushal Rege

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Plasmonic nanoparticles have been increasingly investigated for numerous applications in medicine, sensing, and catalysis. In particular, gold nanoparticles have been investigated for separations, sensing, drug/nucleic acid delivery, and bioimaging. In addition, silver nanoparticles demonstrate antibacterial activity, resulting in potential application in treatments against microbial infections, burns, diabetic skin ulcers, and medical devices. Here, we describe the facile, parallel synthesis of both gold and silver nanoparticles using a small set of poly(amino ethers), or PAEs, derived from linear polyamines, under ambient conditions and in absence of additional reagents. The kinetics of nanoparticle formation were dependent on PAE concentration and chemical composition. …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Multienzyme complexes catalyze important metabolic reactions in many organisms, but little is known about the complexes involved in biological methane production (methanogenesis). A crosslinking-mass spectrometry (XL-MS) strategy was employed to identify proteins associated with coenzyme M-coenzyme B heterodisulfide reductase (Hdr), an essential enzyme in all methane-producing archaea (methanogens). In Methanosarcina acetivorans, Hdr forms a multienzyme complex with acetyl-CoA decarbonylase synthase (ACDS), and F420-dependent methylene-H4MPT reductase (Mer). ACDS is essential for production of acetyl-CoA during growth on methanol, or for methanogenesis from acetate, whereas Mer is essential for methanogenesis from all substrates. Existence of a Hdr:ACDS:Mer …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Heme oxygenase (HO) catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the O2- dependent degradation of heme to biliverdin, CO, and iron with electrons delivered from NADPH via cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR). Biliverdin reductase (BVR) then catalyzes conversion of biliverdin to bilirubin. We describe mutagenesis combined with kinetic, spectroscopic (fluorescence and NMR), surface plasmon resonance, cross-linking, gel filtration, and analytical ultracentrifugation studies aimed at evaluating interactions of HO-2 with CPR and BVR. Based on these results, we propose a model in which HO-2 and CPR form a dynamic ensemble of complex(es) that precede formation of the productive electron transfer complex. The …

Candida albicans is a major fungal pathogen of humans. This yeast is carried by many individuals as a harmless commensal, but when immune defences are perturbed it causes mucosal infections (thrush). Additionally, when the immune system becomes severely compromised, C. albicans often causes life-threatening systemic infections. A battery of virulence factors and fitness attributes promote the pathogenicity of C. albicans. Fitness attributes include robust responses to local environmental stresses, the inactivation of which attenuates virulence. Stress signalling pathways in C. albicans include evolutionarily conserved modules. However, there has been rewiring of some stress regulatory circuitry such that the roles of …
