Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy & Practice, A Discussion Paper, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul Weldon

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The internet has profoundly changed how we produce, use and collect research and information for public policy and practice, with grey literature playing an increasingly important role. The authors argue that grey literature (i.e. material produced and published by organisations without recourse to the commercial or scholarly publishing industry) is a key part of the evidence produced and used for public policy and practice. Through surveys of users, producing organisations and collecting services a detailed picture is provided of the importance and economic value of grey literature. However, finding and accessing policy information is a time-consuming task made harder by …

The Influence Of Effective Leadership On Teaching And Learning, Catherine Barrett, Robert Breyer

Journal of Research Initiatives

Principals and educators are challenged with meeting the increased demands of teaching and learning, which becomes difficult in environments filled with negative undercurrents, such as poverty, teacher satisfaction, salary, and instruction. Administrators must instill passion in teachers and provide effective leadership to motivate teachers to engage and energize students. The primary focus of this study was to determine how modeling instructional strategies by principals influence teachers’ implementation of strategies that promote greater student engagement and learning. Sustaining teachers’ passion for teaching and providing educators with the motivation to engage students in lessons through effective leadership and modeling were addressed in …

Creative Destruction Of Higher Education Institutions, Ronald Ben Johnson Nov 2014

Creative Destruction Of Higher Education Institutions, Ronald Ben Johnson

Journal of Research Initiatives

Creative destruction is the phenomena of constant change through technological and/or process innovations in any given industry. Without strategy and commitment to continuous development, the process of constant change threatens any firm’s ability to establish and sustain competitive advantage over competition. Creative destruction can turn the biggest giants of today into tomorrow’s distant memories. Institutions of higher education cannot escape the tentacles of creative destruction as they are now witnessing their own industry rapidly changing. Some institutions of higher education have responded by strategically adapting while others have remained fiercely intransigent. Dr. Michael E. Porter’s five forces analysis provides …

Leaders In Journalism Education: Administrators At Acejmc Accredited Programs And Non-Accredited Hbcu Programs Critique The Standards, Jerry Crawford

Journal of Research Initiatives

Administrators of journalism and mass communication units have had to make decisions on how they would lead their units into the future. For over 70 years, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) has been the agency that provided leadership in this endeavor. This study surveyed administrators of programs of accredited and also non-accredited journalism programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), asking them to critique and discuss their thoughts on the nine standards. Nearly unanimously the administrators agreed that accreditation, or as those not accredited stated, “best practices”, are essential. The study focused on …

Filling In The Blanks On Reducing Tobacco Product Addictiveness In The Fctc Partial Guidelines For Articles 9 & 10, Eric N. Lindblom

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The existing Partial Guidelines for Implementation of Articles 9 & 10 of the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control includes a strategy for regulating tobacco products to reduce their attractiveness, but does not yet provide any guidance for reducing either the toxicity or the addictiveness of tobacco products. Section 1.2.1.2, “Addictiveness (dependence liability),” states only that: “This section has been left blank intentionally to indicate that guidance will be proposed at a later stage.” A related footnote says that the blanks will be filled “as new country experience, and scientific, medical and other evidence become available. . . [and] will …

Obtaining Required Childhood Vaccinations: The Latino Immigrant Experience, Barbara Derose

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Monday, July 28, 2014:

Vaccinations are an important step in preventing childhood illnesses and disease outbreaks in the community. Complete immunizations before school assure eligibility for enrollment and protect children against severe illness. The fact that foreign-born children of Latino immigrants face health disparities in receiving vaccinations is well documented. However, there is little information in the literature about the actual experience of immigrants facing the complexities of the health system, and through their eyes, which factors ultimately affect vaccination rates of immigrant Latino children. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to give voice to Latino …

Purpose: Our objective was to engage and develop initiatives with our community partners to better prepare our nursing students for a community clinical placement in their Undergraduate Nursing Degree program thus increasing our clinical placements and stimulating students to consider community nursing as a viable career option. Many nursing degree programs have made the decision that to maintain a Primary healthcare community focus within the curriculum that addressees not just the theoretical component but the practicalities of a community placement is a very expensive exercise and one that in the current neoliberal economic …

Understanding Workplace Reciprocity Of Emergency Nurses: A Qualitative Study, Christine Marie Corcoran Nov 2014

Understanding Workplace Reciprocity Of Emergency Nurses: A Qualitative Study, Christine Marie Corcoran

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Emergency Departments (ED) are unpredictable environments and are well-known for instantaneous change. At one moment, the ED may be relatively quiet and then suddenly ambulances and helicopters arrive with multiple patients from a serious car accident. Typically, nurses are the first healthcare provider encountered by the patient. Given the rapid changes, this is an environment with high levels of stress and more so for the ED nurse (Browning, Ryan, Thomas, Greenberg, & Rolniak, 2007; Spence, Laschinger, & Havens, 1997). EDs are open for patient care all day, every day. The flow of patients and their reasons for presenting to the …

Only 53% of Americans who are age 50 comply with colorectal cancer screening guidelines. More people need to have colonoscopy screenings. This study aims to learn what motivators are working to get people to comply with colonoscopy screening so that this information can be used to motivate more people to have the screening done.

Methods: We used mixed-methods with qualitative and quantitative features in a one-on-one interview and a questionnaire with …

Development Of An Evidence-Based Surgical Decision Making Algorithm For Bladder Exstrophy Related Continence Procedures, Marlo Ann Michelle Eldridge, Zeina Khouri-Stevens, John Phillip Gearhart

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Friday, July 25, 2014:

Bladder exstrophy (BE), is a rare congenital malformation that occurs 1:40,000 live births, (Nelson, 2005). Occurring during the tenth week of pregnancy, BE manifests as failure of the abdominal wall to close and results in the protrusion of the anterior bladder through the lower abdominal wall. In the modern staged repair, the abdominal wall portion of the defect is ideally closed in the first 72 hours of life. The staged approach then requires a continence procedure, typically undertaken in the middle elementary years. There are two main continence procedures, the bladder neck reconstruction …
