Publications and Research

Emerging evidence suggests that RANKL-induced changes in chromatin state are important for osteoclastogenesis, but these epigenetic mechanisms are not well understood and have not been therapeutically targeted. In this study we find that the small molecule I-BET151 that targets bromo and extra-terminal (BET) proteins that “read” chromatin states by binding to acetylated histones strongly suppresses osteoclastogenesis. I-BET151 suppresses pathologic bone loss in TNF-induced inflammatory osteolysis, inflammatory arthritis, and post-ovariectomy models. Transcriptome analysis identifies a MYC-NFAT axis important for osteoclastogenesis. Mechanistically, I-BET151 inhibits expression of the master osteoclast regulator NFATC1 by suppressing expression and recruitment of its newly identified upstream regulator …

Photoheterotrophic Growth Of Physcomitrella Patens, Terry M. Bricker, Adam J. Bell, Lan Tran, Laurie K. Frankel, Steven M. Theg

Faculty Publications

© Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013. Physcomitrella patens is a model bryophyte representing an early land plant in the green plant lineage. This organism possesses many advantages as a model organism. Its genome has been sequenced, its predominant life cycle stage is the haploid gametophyte, it is readily transformable and it can integrate transformed DNA into its genome by homologous recombination. One limitation for the use of P. patens in photosynthesis research is its reported inability to grow photoheterotrophically, in the presence of sucrose and the Photosystem II inhibitor 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, which prevents linear photosynthetic electron transport. In this communication we describe …

Controlling Photoreactions In Crystals And Through Confinement In Water Soluble Supramolecules, Barnali Mondal Nov 2014

Controlling Photoreactions In Crystals And Through Confinement In Water Soluble Supramolecules, Barnali Mondal

Open Access Dissertations

The research presented in this thesis reports various uses of supramolecules in steering photochemical and photophysical properties of small organic guest molecules. Crystals possess long range periodic arrangement of highly ordered building units and are considered as supramolecular systems. The first part of the thesis reports the use of crystals as a confined media (solid state) in directing photochemical reactions. In particular, olefins (trans 4-stilbazoles) have been directed to undergo selective [2+2] cycloaddtion in solid state. Selective photoproduct in crystals is controlled by various weak interactions in crystal lattice, which bring (pack) the reactive C=C bonds within 4.2 Å. Photoreaction …

Aspartate Β-Hydroxylase Expession Promotes A Malignant Pancreatic Cellular Phenotype, Xiaoqun Dong, Qiushi Lin, Arihiro Aihara, Gregory Gabriel

Faculty Articles

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths due to aggressive progression and metastatic spread. Aspartate β-hydroxylase (ASPH), a cell surface protein that catalyzes the hydroxylation of epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like repeats in Notch receptors and ligands, is highly overexpressed in PC. ASPH upregulation confers a malignant phenotype characterized by enhanced cell proliferation, migration, invasion and colony formation in vitro as well as PC tumor growth in vivo. The transforming properties of ASPH depend on enzymatic activity. ASPH links PC growth factor signaling cascades to Notch activation. A small molecule inhibitor of β-hydroxylase activity was …

Dove V. Parham: Desegregation In The Dollarway School District, Kevin Sinclair Nov 2014

Dove V. Parham: Desegregation In The Dollarway School District, Kevin Sinclair

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the Dove v. Parham school desegregation case that was heard on December 16, 1959, in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Arkansas, Western Division with Judge J. Smith Henley presiding. Attorney George Howard Jr. had brought forth the lawsuit on behalf of three African American students who were denied transfer to the all-white Dollarway School District. The tactic of massive resistance had failed to stop any integration attempts in the state and was replaced by minimal compliance. The Dollarway School District chose to use pupil placement laws to avoid integration. By using transcripts from the …

Alternative Approaches To Correction Of Malapropisms In Aiml Based Conversational Agents, Walter A. Brock Nov 2014

Alternative Approaches To Correction Of Malapropisms In Aiml Based Conversational Agents, Walter A. Brock

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The use of Conversational Agents (CAs) utilizing Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) has been studied in a number of disciplines. Previous research has shown a great deal of promise. It has also documented significant limitations in the abilities of these CAs. Many of these limitations are related specifically to the method employed by AIML to resolve ambiguities in the meaning and context of words. While methods exist to detect and correct common errors in spelling and grammar of sentences and queries submitted by a user, one class of input error that is particularly difficult to detect and correct is the …

Paintings: Perceptions Of Ordinary Moments, Laura Brainard Raborn Nov 2014

Paintings: Perceptions Of Ordinary Moments, Laura Brainard Raborn

Theses and Dissertations

By depicting the human figure in ordinary moments, I highlight mundane, yet important, actions in daily life. In order to captivate the viewer, I use specific formal elements: abstraction that contrasts areas of representation, evidence of drawn line, a variety of high contrasts, and repetition of forms. I also use a layering technique to obscure or reveal information selectively. These formal elements are employed to compel the viewer to thoughtfully question and consider the presented figure. This body of work was inspired by my ideas about social norms and modern culture. Contemporary painters such as Eric Fischl and Jenny Saville …

A Vision For Change In Bioscience Education: Building On Knowledge From The Past, Nancy J. Pelaez, Trevor R. Anderson, Samuel N. Postlethwait

PIBERG Publications

High quality undergraduate education is central to the success of all life scientists. Several major bioscience educational issues are the targets of much debate, research, funding, publications, and reports (e.g. Vision and Change). Surprisingly, these issues are considered by modern bioscience instructors as unresolved despite historical reports that claim the contrary. Here we illustrate with evidence how, more than 50 years ago, Sam Postlethwait successfully instituted strategies to address several issues in plant biology education with his audio-‐tutorials. These strategies succeeded in individualizing instruction of students with diverse educational backgrounds in large classes, incorporating authentic and active learning, integrating lab …

Leo P. Mclaughlin: Undisputed Boss Of Hot Springs, John H. Jones Nov 2014

Leo P. Mclaughlin: Undisputed Boss Of Hot Springs, John H. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This project involves exploring the life of Leo Patrick McLaughlin, especially his time as mayor of Hot Springs, by web exhibit, http://leopmclaughlin.omeka.net/exhibits/show/leo-patrick-mclaughlin--the-un. The goal is to inform readers of this colorful character in Arkansas history. This has been achieved by examining the gambling syndicate and political machine that McLaughlin created, as well as his connections with underworld figures such as Al Capone, Bugs Moran, and other criminals on the Most Wanted list. Upon examination of these connections, it will become clear to readers that Mayor McLaughlin began to think himself untouchable, demonstrated by his attempts to take on Governor Carl …

Range Of Horizontal Transport And Residence Time Of Nitrate In A Mature Karst Vadose Zone, Jiri Kamas, Jiri Bruthans, Helena Vysoka, Miroslav Kovařík

International Journal of Speleology

Nitrate concentrations in drips in Amaterska, Spolecnak, and Holstejnska caves situated below a 25 to 120 m thick vadose zone in the Moravian Karst, Central Europe were studied during several periods from 1992. Each cave runs below a land-use boundary between fertilized lands and forest, which enabled study of the range of horizontal components of nitrate transport in the vadose zone. Parts of the fertilized land were turned into grassland in 1998 and 2003, and the cave drips were sampled both prior and after the changes in land use. The mean residence time of nitrate is - 30 m thick …

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: Legitimate Weapon Systems Or Unlawful Angels Of Death?, Michael J. Deegan Nov 2014

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: Legitimate Weapon Systems Or Unlawful Angels Of Death?, Michael J. Deegan

Pace International Law Review

Since the invasion of Afghanistan, the United States has utilized Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to locate, surveil and kill members of the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and its associated forces. Such killings have decimated the leadership of these groups and disrupted their operations. However, there are collateral effects from UAV killings including civilian deaths. These deaths increase resentment and hatred toward the US, which is channeled by terrorist groups to recruit new members and for local support. Moreover, targeted killings outside a combat zone have political and diplomatic consequences. This paper argues that the current uses of UAV are legal under international …

Untitled Film Still, Risd Museum, A. Will Brown Nov 2014

Untitled Film Still, Risd Museum, A. Will Brown

Channel

When making his prints, animations, and light boxes, Ezawa looks for source images on the Internet, manipulates them, and distills them to their essentials. Untitled Film Still belongs to a series of works for which Ezawa appropriated several famous photographs in order to deal with the questions of why some images become icons and how one looks at and interprets imagery. It is a playful appropriation of Cindy Sherman’s photograph with the same title from 1978. Sherman’s seminal Untitled Film Still series was in fact single photographs in which a female character (always played by Sherman herself) is trapped in …
