Information Literacy For Global Leadership: Constructing A Pedagogical Activity To Address A Global Crisis Utilizing Global Literacies And Acrl Standards, Brenda Chappell-Sharpe

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Preparing faculty for their role in global leadership is a collaborative effort. Administrators, faculty, IT, media specialists and librarians all have an important part to play. In 2011, I was asked to develop and teach a one-week information literacy module via Blackboard for the faculty participating in the Teacher Scholars Program (TSP). TSP is a yearlong collaborative project between The Center for Teaching and Learning, and the academic departments on campus. I believe that this called for a new approach to thinking about information literacy (IL) and literacy itself. This presentation provides an overview on the collaborative project, Teachers Scholar …

Take Course Content, Sauté It With Blogs And Sprinkle It With Information Literacy, Tatiana Pashkova-Balkenhol, Elizabeth Kocevar-Weidinger

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Learn how we collaborated with faculty members for different blogging assignments that targeted general audiences. In one class, the focus was to teach students how to find copyright-friendly multimedia and cite scholarly research, which was to be accessed by a global audience. In the other class, the emphasis was to help students find reliable, free resources and cite them using a blogging citation style. As a number of students, who self-publish, increases, discover how we met the challenge of teaching students how to find, use, and cite information for life-long learning and effective communication in their local and global communities.

Fun Assessment: How To Embed Evaluation With Educational Games, Mary J. Snyder Broussard, Theresa R. Mcdevitt Dec 2014

Fun Assessment: How To Embed Evaluation With Educational Games, Mary J. Snyder Broussard, Theresa R. Mcdevitt

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Most librarians, and indeed students, tremble at the very mention of the dreaded word “assessment.” This does not have to be the case. When assessment is non-threatening and strategically placed to provide needed feedback, it can be pleasant, rewarding and improve learning outcomes. Many educational games have built-in assessment that turns evaluation into fun. This session will look at specific examples used at two Pennsylvania academic libraries where games help instructional librarians ensure that students are accomplishing what the activity requires and assess student learning. Come to this session prepared to play!

From A “Crusade Against Ignorance” To A “Crisis Of Authenticity”: Cultivating Information Literacy For A 21st Century Democracy, Andrew Battista Dec 2014

From A “Crusade Against Ignorance” To A “Crisis Of Authenticity”: Cultivating Information Literacy For A 21st Century Democracy, Andrew Battista

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

In this session, I propose ways to present information literacy instruction to students and faculty as an essential component in one’s education, a requirement for life in a civic democracy. I suggest that information literacy instructors should champion the concept of publicly important knowledge. Rather than instruction that privileges task-oriented process information-seeking processes, librarians should cultivate interactions where students develop patterns of curating knowledge that reflect a deep-seated desire to be aware of what matters to educated people. We will discover how social media platforms are the concrete tools we can use to facilitate this paradigm shift in information literacy …

Double, Triple, Quadruple The Recipe: Serve Library Instruction To A Crowd (And Assess It, Too!) With Libguides And Polleverywhere, Melissa Bowles-Terry, Kennedy Penn-O'Toole

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Offering library instruction to a class of over 200 may sound impossible -- or crazy -- but some library instruction recipes can be scaled up to serve a crowd. The presenters (a political science instructor and a librarian) embedded library activities on politics and the media by creating an online guide to help students find news and information on political campaigns and then evaluate that information. Students participated in class discussion and shared their findings and reflections through cellphone voting. In this session we’ll share our strategies and results, and invite the audience to participate with PollEverywhere!

At many institutions …

21st Century Skills And Pre-Service Teacher Education, Jillian Brandt Maruskin Dec 2014

21st Century Skills And Pre-Service Teacher Education, Jillian Brandt Maruskin

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

The phrase “21st century skills” has been a buzzword among librarians for some time now, but is still working its way into the vocabulary of educators and education administrators. 21st century skills (critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, creativity, communication, and innovation) are an integral part of ensuring a successful transition into college. It has become clear that efforts to ease this transition are to be a collaborative effort among librarians, educators, and administrators. Academic librarians in particular hold a great responsibility in this effort because well-prepared college freshman increase the likelihood of retention and student success.

This session will outline …

Beyond The Checklist: Using Rhetorical Analysis To Evaluate Sources As Social Acts, Joel Burkholder Dec 2014

Beyond The Checklist: Using Rhetorical Analysis To Evaluate Sources As Social Acts, Joel Burkholder

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Rhetorical analysis can transform information literacy instruction. A familiar concept in the study of rhetoric, it illustrates that all messages are deliberate, social acts, constructed by authors to achieve specific purposes and speak to specific audiences. To be effective, authors must make rhetorical choices that suit both the purpose and audience they are addressing.

Under the current paradigm of source evaluation, librarians largely ignore the rhetorical nature of messages, focusing instead on the identification of surface features that indicate high-quality information. This can lead to the impression that messages are inert objects, rather than dynamic, social acts. Forms of communication, …

First Proof Of Concept Of Sustainable Metabolite Production From High Solids Fermentation Of Lignocellulosic Biomass Using A Bacterial Co-Culture And Cycling Flush System, Wanying Yao, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

To improve the lignocellulose conversion for ABE in high solids fermentation, this study explored the feasibility of cycling the process through the cellulolytic or/and solventogenic phases via intermittent flushing of the fermentation media. Five different flushing strategies (varying medium ingredients, inoculum supplement and cycling through phases) were investigated. Flushing regularly throughout the cellulolytic phase is necessary because re-incubation at 65 °C significantly improved glucose availability by at least 6-fold. The solvents accumulation was increased by 4-fold using corn stover (3-fold using miscanthus) over that produced by flushing only through the solventogenic phase. In addition, cycling process was simplified by re-incubating …

We Put Down Our Guns And Picked Up Microphones: Community Radio As A Conduit For Community Development In Guatemala, Elizabeth Halpin Dec 2014

We Put Down Our Guns And Picked Up Microphones: Community Radio As A Conduit For Community Development In Guatemala, Elizabeth Halpin

Latin American Studies ETDs

The intent of this thesis is to explore how community radio in Guatemala is used as a tool for community development. The concept of development I use is based off the idea that in order to build and maintain a sustainable quality of life there must be a solid community foundation for social capacity. Approaching radio as a conduit for change, I examine the various roles the radio takes on in order to enhance the overall quality of life by serving as (1) a channel for community knowledge; (2) a platform for indigenous rights; (3) a pillar for community solidarity; …

Why Evidence Matters: Examining The Knowledge And Perception Of Pre-Service Teachers, Stefanie Campbell Dec 2014

Why Evidence Matters: Examining The Knowledge And Perception Of Pre-Service Teachers, Stefanie Campbell

HIM 1990-2015

Evidence-based educational policymaking has become a global phenomenon (Wiseman, 2010). According to the Institute of Education Sciences, evidence-based education is "an integration of the professional wisdom and the best available empirical evidence on making decision about how to deliver instructions" (IES, US Department of Education, 2012). This suggests that best practice requires teachers to ensure that instructional strategies and programs implemented in their classroom have been studied in scientific experiments to determine their effectiveness. The general public, as well as practicing teachers, holds an assumption that educators have knowledge as to what is evidence-based education. However, this is not always …

Melatonin And Neurogenesis: A Comparative Study Of The Efficacy Of Melatonin, Its Precursors, And L-Dopa On Neural Stem Cell Metabolism In Human Adult Neurospheres, Omar Heriba Dec 2014

Melatonin And Neurogenesis: A Comparative Study Of The Efficacy Of Melatonin, Its Precursors, And L-Dopa On Neural Stem Cell Metabolism In Human Adult Neurospheres, Omar Heriba

HIM 1990-2015

Human neurosphere stem cells offer promising potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Their well characterized multi-potency of differentiating into neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes when exposed to the optimum exogenous growth factors make them an exciting area of study (38). Finding novel endogenous methods of modulating stem cell metabolism will allow for the safer treatment of various brain disorders (34). In this experiment, melatonin, N-acetylserotonin, L-tryptophan, and L-DOPA are added in three different concentrations to neurospheres suspended in HNSC/GBM media with less than optimal concentrations of exogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). The alamarBlue assay (resazurin) …

Exploring The Role Of Teacher Identity In Teacher Leadership: A Case Study Of Two Public Primary Schools In Mombasa County, Kenya, Moses Njoroge Harun

Master of Education

Teachers’ roles and responsibilities keep on increasing in tandem with curriculum innovations and changing socio-economic realities. This demands teachers adopt certain qualities to assist them cope with the changes. Amongst these are identities that enhance teachers’ leadership skills in the classroom, school and in the community. Many studies have been conducted on teacher identity in the Western world but not in Africa and the East African region in particular. This is unlike teacher leadership which has been extensively examined, even regionally. However, these studies have not investigated the link between the two constructs. This research, hence, sought to explore the …

Afro-Colombians And The Encroachment Of Paramilitaries On The African Palm Oil Sector, Stacie Hecht

Anthropology ETDs

The African palm oil industry in Colombia has burgeoned in the last decade, with state-sanctioned promotions and new developmental productions for the expansion of these plantations seeking to provide economic stability for the country. In addition, with the passing of the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Colombia in 2011, as well as deals with several European countries for the exportation of the product, comes an even greater demand than previously known for the industry. However, the continuation of this endeavor will lead to the devastation of the bio-diverse lands being used for economic gains. Furthermore, palm oil …

Motion Of Bubbles In Confined Microgeometries: Flow Behavior And Co2 Dissolution Regimes, Martin Sauzade

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The motion and dissolution of bubbles in confined microgeometries is of pivotal importance for many natural and industrial flow processes such as microchemical systems and the development of models for unveiling the fundamentals of oil recovery in porous-like media. In this thesis, we experimentally study the formation, morphology, dynamics and mass transfer of bubbles flowing through a liquid in a microchannel with a particular emphasis on the behavior and dissolution of CO2 micro-bubbles in high viscosity oils. A significant part of the thesis addresses the initial dynamical behavior of dissolving CO2 monodisperse micro-bubbles in numerous solvents (water, silicone oils, alcohols, …

Women's Health And Abortion Culture In China: Policy, Perception And Practice , Naomi Bouchard

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since China’s implementation of the Family Planning Policy in 1973, much research has been dedicated to analyzing the effects of a policy that strictly controls the reproductive lives of a population now comprisedof 1.35 billion people. Analyses focus on the rise of abortions in China, now at an annual rate of at least 13 million, but offer little insight into the perceptions of the population in regard to China’s new abortion culture. This study aims to shed light on current perceptions through a range of in-person, qualitative interviews conducted in Kunming, China. The study is limited to a sample size …

The Effects Of Temperature And Seasons On Subcutaneous White Adipose Tissue In Humans: Evidence For Thermogenic Gene Induction, Philip A. Kern, Brian S. Finlin, Beibei Zhu, Neda Rasouli, Robert E. Mcgehee Jr., Philip M. Westgate, Esther E. Dupont-Versteegden

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Context: Although brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity is increased by a cold environment, little is known of the response of human white adipose tissue (WAT) to the cold.

Design: We examined both abdominal and thigh subcutaneous (SC) WAT from 71 subjects who were biopsied in the summer or winter, and adipose expression was assessed after an acute cold stimulus applied to the thigh of physically active young subjects.

Results: In winter, UCP1 and PGC1 α mRNA were increased 4 to 10-fold (p<0.05) and 1.5 to 2-fold, respectively, along with beige adipose markers, and UCP1 protein was 3-fold higher in the winter. The seasonal increase in abdominal SC WAT UCP1 mRNA was considerably diminished in subjects with a BMI > 30 kg/m2, suggesting that dysfunctional WAT in obesity inhibits adipose thermogenesis. After applying an acute …

Use Of Social Media In Disaster Relief During The Kuantan (Malaysia) Flood, T. Chong, S.L. Pan, C. Leong, S. Bahri, A.F. Ahmad Khan

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Natural disasters, particularly hydro-meteorological (climate-related) disasters such as droughts, tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons and floods, have increased in prevalence and severity in recent decades. During these disasters, the most pressing relief needs are food, water, sanitation and shelter. While relief organizations are increasingly utilizing the power of social media for informational tools such as disaster response crisis mapping, social media-derived relief efforts initiated by the general public have also increased in popularity. Compared to relief organizations, which have greater access to resources, relief efforts initiated by the general public are typically less organized and more personal and exploratory in nature. This …

The findings revealed that the students’ stereotypes about Germany were varied and diverse. Also, they were overwhelmingly positive. The top three salient categories of images about Germany were related to technology, famous personalities – for the most part football players and scientists – and cars. The findings also indicated that very …

Employee Engagement: What Is It And How Do We Go About It?, R. Abu Bakar Dec 2014

Employee Engagement: What Is It And How Do We Go About It?, R. Abu Bakar

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Although numerous scholars has improved our understanding of the implications of engagement, relatively little attention has been paid to its conceptual definition. This paper provides a conceptual review of its definition and examined the contextual characteristics that define engagement. Specifically, the paper discusses some debatable meaning of engagement that yields inconsistent views from scholars. Based on the review, this paper found that engagement focuses upon the positive and fulfilling aspects of doing work. For a person to be engaged, he or she must be vigorous, dedicated and absorbed in their job. This positive reflection is in line with the movement …
