Out-Of-School Suspensions And Academic Achievement In Indiana High Schools, Joseph A. Voelker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine whether schools that impose more days of out-of-school suspension as a discipline consequence in Indiana high schools have a relationship with the academic results of the school. The study was conducted by administering a survey to all Indiana public high school principals. Eighty-nine principals responded to the Principal Survey on High School Discipline. The Principal Survey on High School Discipline asked respondents the number of days a student would be suspended out of school for first time offenses to 18 common discipline infractions. The sum of out-of-school suspension days (called the suspension …

Multilingual Named Entity Recognition, Vivek V. Kulkarni Dec 2014

Multilingual Named Entity Recognition, Vivek V. Kulkarni

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the massive amounts of unannotated text available from myriad sources, learning representations useful for natural language processing(NLP) tasks is an increasingly popular research area. Using deep learning techniques, we learn distributed representations for words (word embeddings) using Wikipedia as the source of text for 40 languages. These distributed representations represent each word as a point in feature space and capture useful semantic and syntactic properties of words amd have been shown to be useful in NLP Tasks like Part of Speech Tagging(POS) etc. We have built 2 classes of word embeddings namely Polyglot and Skipgram for these languages. We …

A Scalable Physics-Based Data Modeling Framework To Unsupervised High-Dimensional Data Mining, Hao Huang Dec 2014

A Scalable Physics-Based Data Modeling Framework To Unsupervised High-Dimensional Data Mining, Hao Huang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Today's modeling and analysis of high-dimensional data is either based on human expertise to hand-craft a set of task-specific data, which suffers significantly from the ever-increasing complexity and the unknown patterns of the new data; or is based on simple data-driven approaches which tend to lose the fundamentally physical insights of real world datasets. Therefore, it is very difficult with today's modeling practice to efficiently, effectively, and unsupervisedly detect reliable patterns and information in high-dimensional data. In this dissertation, we developed a scalable data modeling framework that utilizes modern theoretical physics for unsupervised high-dimensional data analysis and mining. Not only …

Gpu-Acceleration Of X-Ray Photon Scattering Simulation, Jaewoo Pi Dec 2014

Gpu-Acceleration Of X-Ray Photon Scattering Simulation, Jaewoo Pi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Computed Tomography is widely used in numerous fields. To facilitate the development of an algorithm while avoiding additional radiation dose to the patient, the simulation of the CT imaging process is required. The scattering effect of X-ray photons impact on quality of output images. Thus, modeling the scattering is an important task to predict and eliminate the effects on energy. However, the simulation has been challenging task. Two approaches, deterministic and Monte Carlo method has been widely used, but both methods have to undergo trade-off between speed and sampling rate. In this research, the new algorithm which exploits Bi-directional ray …

Existence Of Undominated Subgame Perfect Equilibrium In Extensive Form Games, Ceren Yilmaz Dec 2014

Existence Of Undominated Subgame Perfect Equilibrium In Extensive Form Games, Ceren Yilmaz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There are games for which all subgame perfect equilibria are such that some (or all) players use weakly dominated strategies. Surely this is undesirable as it diminishes the credibility of equilibria. It is implausible to expect a player to play a weakly dominated strategy just because it is an 'equilibrium strategy'. We focus on the class of finite extensive form games with complete and perfect information and show that in this class of games there exists an undominated subgame perfect equilibrium; a subgame perfect equilibrium in which no player uses a weakly dominated strategy. The results also provide insight as …

The Impact Of The Responsiveness Of Monetary Policy On The Housing Market, Lin Zhang Dec 2014

The Impact Of The Responsiveness Of Monetary Policy On The Housing Market, Lin Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Taylor (2007) claims that a not too responsive monetary policy was responsible for the housing boom between 2001 and 2005 and the subsequent financial crisis because it results in the low interest rate during 2002-2004. Using a reduced form model, he shows that the economic situation would have been improved if a more responsive monetary policy had been implemented. In this paper, we set up a two-sector New Keynesian DSGE model, estimated using Bayesian techniques, to evaluate Taylor's hypotheses. First, we did identify a less responsive monetary policy after 2000. Our results partially support Taylor's hypothesis, that a more responsive …

Multi Agent Systems For Cooperative Tracking, Jonathan Patrick Beaudeau Dec 2014

Multi Agent Systems For Cooperative Tracking, Jonathan Patrick Beaudeau

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation is a culmination of research in several parallel, yet related avenues dealing with statistical estimation in the context of dynamic state tracking. The main contribution of the thesis is to provide a novel scalable framework for tracking of a high-dimensional target state using a distributed and cooperative network of agents. This framework is incorporated into a specific application consisting of a multiple target tracking (MTT) environment, with each agent employing a number of mobile received-signal-strength (RSS) sensors capable of collecting measurements revealing localized information regarding the target state environment. The dimensionality of this problem, which is the dominating …

On The Design Of High Performance Data Center Networks, Zhiyang Guo Dec 2014

On The Design Of High Performance Data Center Networks, Zhiyang Guo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Massive modern data centers consisting of tens of thousands of servers have emerged to form the backbone of a variety of powerful distributed computing frameworks, in which efficient communication is often required among huge data sets stored in tens of thousands of servers across a data center. This renders the performance of the data center network (DCN) essential to the successful operation of a data center. This dissertation focuses on several important issues in the design space of high performance data center networks. First, we present a systematic study on optical packet switch, which is a key component in next …

Signature Search And Computing Cost Optimization In Distributed Load Networks, Zhongwen Ying Dec 2014

Signature Search And Computing Cost Optimization In Distributed Load Networks, Zhongwen Ying

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A signature is a data pattern of interest in a large data file or set of large data files. Such signatures that need to be found arise in applications such as DNA sequence analysis, network intrusion detection, biometrics, large scientific experiments, speech recognition and sensor networks. Related to this is string matching. More specifically we envision a problem where long linear data files (i.e flat files) contain multiple signatures that are to be found using a multiplicity of processors (parallel processor). This paper evaluates the performance of finding signatures in files residing in the nodes of parallel processors configured as …

A Novel Analysis Method For Parallel Processing, Zhemin Zhang Dec 2014

A Novel Analysis Method For Parallel Processing, Zhemin Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Though the divisible load scheduling problem has been studied for over two decades, the optimal solution for this problem can be obtained only in a few network topologies by the approach proposed in [6], which recursively equates multiple processing nodes in the network to a super processing node. The limitation of this equivalent approach lies in the fact that a node is required to finishing receiving load from its neighboring nodes simultaneously under this approach, such that linear equations can be established for all nodes in the network. However, the requirement is satisfied in very few network topologies. In this …

Canonical Forest, Yu-Chuan Chen Dec 2014

Canonical Forest, Yu-Chuan Chen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this dissertation, we propose a new classification ensemble method named Canonical Forest. This new ensemble method uses canonical linear discriminant analysis (CLDA) and bootstrap resampling method to create more accurate and diverse classifiers in an ensemble. Although CLDA is commonly used for dimension reduction, we note here CLDA serves as a linear transformation tool rather than a dimension reduction tool. Since CLDA will find the transformed space that separates the classes farther in distribution, classifiers built on this space will be more accurate than those on the original space. To further diversify the classifiers in an ensemble, CLDA is …

The Ubiquity Of Hermeneutics, Babette Babich Dec 2014

The Ubiquity Of Hermeneutics, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

To understand Nietzsche in the context of hermeneutics is to understand not only Nietzsche’s philosophy of interpretation (Figl 1982a, 1984) but his perspective on perspective (Cox 1997) or “perspectivalism” (Babich 1994: 116f). In turn, given his background familiarity with hermeneutic methodology, this also corresponds to Nietzsche’s own approach as an interpreter of texts and antiquity as of the life, the culture, the history of ancient Greece (see the range of contributions to Jensen and Heit 2014 as well as Ugolini 2003; Figl 1984; and Pöschl 1979). And to do this, just to the extent that Nietzsche specifically reflects on interpretation …

Value-Based Land Management Conflict: Alpine Cattle Grazing In Victoria , Matthew Luciani Dec 2014

Value-Based Land Management Conflict: Alpine Cattle Grazing In Victoria , Matthew Luciani

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In Victoria, the practice of cattle grazing in alpine areas has shaped land, culture, and history since the early nineteenth century. Characterized by early gold mining, grazing, and skiing tourism, the Victorian Alps eventually seized the attention of conservationists who understood its ecological significance and need for protection, with beginnings of an Alpine National Park idea in 1969 (Johnson, 1974, p. 180). Not until 1989, however, did the park enter into existence, meeting much resistance from farmers and graziers along the way (Mosley, 1999, p. 80). Today, however, the region remains contested between two very distinct groups of people: environmentalists …

Dissertations

This study examined the relationship of pre-service teachers’ self-theories of intelligence (mindset) and their attitudes about Web 2.0. The research questions evaluate: (a) Whether a significant correlation exists between pre-service teachers’ mindsets and attitudes about Web 2.0 (social media), and (b) Whether significant differences exist between demographic groups (e.g., age, certification area, gender) and their attitudes about Web 2.0 (social media). Results of the study indicate that a weak correlation between pre-service teachers’ perceived mindsets and perceived attitudes about Web 2.0 was statistically significant. In addition, significant differences were found based upon certification area, gender, and age with the sample’s …

Trophic Dynamic Interactions In A Temperate Karst River, Elizabeth Malloy Dec 2014

Trophic Dynamic Interactions In A Temperate Karst River, Elizabeth Malloy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Surface streams in karst landscapes are often characterized by high nutrient levels due to incomplete filtration through series of innumerable, below-ground conduits. Seasonal growth of the filamentous alga, Cladophora, is typically associated with nutrient-rich waters. This research compared macroinvertebrate food web structure between riverine reaches with contrasting underlying karst topography, nutrient levels, and Cladophora cover during summer 2012 and autumn 2013. Recent work in these reaches found a high correlation between Cladophora cover and nutrient content, particularly nitrate. Four questions were addressed during this study: 1. Do longitudinal trends in algal and consumer δ13C values relate to decreased DIC availability …

Facilitating Natural Conversational Agent Interactions: Lessons From A Deception Experiment, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Mark Grimes, Justin Scott Giboney, Joesph Buckman

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This study reports the results of a laboratory experiment exploring interactions between humans and a conversational agent. Using the ChatScript language, we created a chat bot that asked participants to describe a series of images. The two objectives of this study were (1) to analyze the impact of dynamic responses on participants’ perceptions of the conversational agent, and (2) to explore behavioral changes in interactions with the chat bot (i.e. response latency and pauses) when participants engaged in deception. We discovered that a chat bot that provides adaptive responses based on the participant’s input dramatically increases the perceived humanness and …

A Cross Comparison Of Spatiotemporally Enhanced Springtime Phenological Measurements From Satellites And Ground In A Northern U.S. Mixed Forest, Liang Liang, Mark D. Schwartz, Zhuosen Wang, Feng Gao, Crystal B. Schaaf, Bin Tan, Jeffrey T. Morisette, Xiaoyang Zhang

GSCE Faculty Publications

Cross comparison of satellite-derived land surface phenology (LSP) and ground measurements is useful to ensure the relevance of detected seasonal vegetation change to the underlying biophysical processes. While standard 16-day and 250-m Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index (VI)-based springtime LSP has been evaluated in previous studies, it remains unclear whether LSP with enhanced temporal and spatial resolutions can capture additional details of ground phenology. In this paper, we compared LSP derived from 500-m daily MODIS and 30-m MODIS-Landsat fused VI data with landscape phenology (LP) in a northern U.S. mixed forest. LP was previously developed from intensively observed …
