K-Theory Of Quadratic Modules: A Study Of Roy's Elementary Orthogonal Group., A. A. Ambily Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis discusses the K-theory of quadratic modules by studying Roys elementary orthogonal group of the quadratic space Q1H(P) over a commutative ring A. We estab- lish a set of commutator relations among the elementary generators of Roys elementary orthogonal group and use this to prove Quillens local-global principle for this elementary group. We also obtain a result on extendability of quadratic modules. We establish nor- mality of the elementary orthogonal group under certain conditions and prove stability results for the Ki group of this orthogonal group. We also prove that Roys elementary orthogonal group and Petrovs odd hyperbolic unitary …

Gravitational waves from a variety of sources are predicted to superpose to create a stochastic background. This background is expected to contain unique information from throughout the history of the Universe that is unavailable through standard electromagnetic observations, making its study of fundamental importance to understanding the evolution of the Universe. We carry out a search for the stochastic background with the latest data from the LIGO and Virgo detectors. Consistent with predictions from most stochastic gravitational-wave background models, the data display no evidence of a stochastic gravitational-wave signal. Assuming a gravitational-wave spectrum of ΩGW(f)=Ωα(f/fref)α, we place 95% confidence level …

In searches for new physics in the energy regime of the LHC, it is becoming increasingly important to distinguish single-jet objects that originate from the merging of the decay products of W bosons produced with high transverse momenta from jets initiated by single partons. Algorithms are defined to identify such W jets for different signals of interest, using techniques that are also applicable to other decays of bosons to hadrons that result in a single jet, such as those from highly boosted Z and Higgs bosons. The efficiency for tagging W jets is measured in data collected with the CMS …

Migration, Global Middle Class, And Professional Development: How Chinese Graduate Students In The U.S. Re-Establish A Sense Of Selfhood, Sylvia Shi Pu

Master's Theses

Transnational migration inevitably leads to destabilization of identity. Groups with different characteristics adopt varied strategies to restabilize a sense of selfhood. Elite global migrants, well-equipped with economic, cultural, and educational capital, tend to embrace a cosmopolitan lifestyle in the new location (Favell 2008). In contrast, migrant workers with limited human capital depend on their national peers for useful information and resources in order to make smooth transition across borders (Brown 2011). However, the case of the elite Chinese student migrants fits into neither of the trajectories. In regaining a sense of personhood, those global middle-class migrants end up in a …

Parweb: A Front-End Interface For Cluster Computing., Jacob Potter

Honors Theses

The High Performance Computational Science Laboratory at Western Michigan University operates a cluster of systems for use by students, professors, and professional researchers. Currently users that want to access the cluster, known as “Thor”, require knowledge of the Unix/Linux command line. They also require knowledge of operating a piece of software known as TORQUE to correctly achieve results from the High Performance Computing Lab.

The Web User Interface Framework for High Performance Cluster Computing alleviates the need for intimate knowledge of a command line interface, and replaces the current interaction interface with a more user friendly and graphical oriented system. …

Baryon Spectrum Using Nf=2+1+1 Ensembles Of Twisted Mass Fermions, C Alexandrou, V Drach, K Hadjiyiannakou, K Jansen, C Kallidonis, G Koutsou Dec 2014

Baryon Spectrum Using Nf=2+1+1 Ensembles Of Twisted Mass Fermions, C Alexandrou, V Drach, K Hadjiyiannakou, K Jansen, C Kallidonis, G Koutsou

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We present results on the masses of the low-lying baryons using ten ensembles of gauge configurations with $N_f =2+1+1$ dynamical twisted mass fermions, at three values of the lattice spacing, spanning a pion mass range from about 210 MeV to about 430 MeV. The strange and charm quark masses are tuned to approximately their physical values. We examine isospin symmetry breaking effects on the baryon mass and the dependence on the lattice spacing. After taking the continuum limit we use chiral perturbation theory to extrapolate to the physical vlaue of the pion mass for all forty baryons. We provide predictions …

Deepeval: An Integrated Framework For The Evaluation Of Student Responses In Dialogue Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Rajendra Banjade

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The automatic assessment of student answers is one of the critical components of an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) because accurate assessment of student input is needed in order to provide effective feedback that leads to learning. But this is a very challenging task because it requires natural language understanding capabilities. The process requires various components, concepts identification, co-reference resolution, ellipsis handling etc. As part of this thesis, we thoroughly analyzed a set of student responses obtained from an experiment with the intelligent tutoring system DeepTutor in which college students interacted with the tutor to solve conceptual physics problems, designed an …

Effects Of Macroscopic Heterogeneity On Cardiac Propagation And Termination Of Reentry, Deepika Konakanchi Dec 2014

Effects Of Macroscopic Heterogeneity On Cardiac Propagation And Termination Of Reentry, Deepika Konakanchi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is believed to be a result of uncontrolled and sustained spiral wave reentries. Few recent studies have discussed the effects of the heterogeneous nature of atrial tissue at cellular and microscopic levels, on the electrical activity of the heart and defibrillation of AF; however, the effect of macroscopic patches of heterogeneity in the size ranges 3-8 mm has not been studied. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of macroscopic patches of heterogeneity on cardiac propagation and termination of reentry in a computationally inexpensive, 2D bidomain model of a sheet of cardiac tissue. Tissue …

Separating Families And Combinatorial Games, Dominik Kim Vu Dec 2014

Separating Families And Combinatorial Games, Dominik Kim Vu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation consists of three results from the domain of extremal combinatorics. While they are all interconnected, we can distinguish two major areas: separating families and combinatorial games. In the following we shall outline them in further detail. Searching is a fundamental tasks inherent to human life both past and present. With the rise of computers and information technology, it was necessary to put all these related tasks into a unified mathematical framework. It fell to Rényi and Katona in the 1960s to pioneer this field. Providing what is nowadays common knowledge about binary search trees, and standard programming approaches …

Impact Of Engineering Ambassador Programs On Student Development, Thalia Anagnos, Alicia Lyman-Holt, Claudia Marin-Artieda, Ellen Momsen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study highlights the positive impact of participation in an engineering ambassador program on students from two universities: Oregon State University which is a large public university in a college town with a 13% minority student body, and Howard University, a medium sized private university with a relatively small engineering program in an urban setting enrolling a primarily minority population. Although these ambassador programs have a major goal of service to the university and engineering program, they serve an equally important goal of developing the skills and attitudes of the ambassadors themselves. Ambassadors from both universities were surveyed, and though …

Earthquake And Tsunami Forecasts: Relation Of Slow Slip Events To Subsequent Earthquake Rupture, Timothy H. Dixon, Yan Jiang, Rocco Malservisi, Robert Mccaffrey, Nicholas Voss, Marino Protti, Victor Gonzalez

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The 5 September 2012 Mw 7.6 earthquake on the Costa Rica subduction plate boundary followed a 62-y interseismic period. High-precision GPS recorded numerous slow slip events (SSEs) in the decade leading up to the earthquake, both up-dip and down-dip of seismic rupture. Deeper SSEs were larger than shallower ones and, if characteristic of the interseismic period, release most locking down-dip of the earthquake, limiting down-dip rupture and earthquake magnitude. Shallower SSEs were smaller, accounting for some but not all interseismic locking. One SSE occurred several months before the earthquake, but changes in Mohr–Coulomb failure stress were probably too small to …

Charge On Luminous Bodies Resembling Natural Ball Lightning Produced Via Electrical Arcs Through Lump Silicon, Christina L. Porter, Galen P. Miley, David J. Griffiths, Erik J. Sánchez Dec 2014

Charge On Luminous Bodies Resembling Natural Ball Lightning Produced Via Electrical Arcs Through Lump Silicon, Christina L. Porter, Galen P. Miley, David J. Griffiths, Erik J. Sánchez

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A phenomenon resembling natural ball lightning can be produced via electrical arcing through silicon. We use lump silicon instead of silicon wafers to achieve higher production rates and larger, longer-lived luminous balls than previously reported. The luminous balls consist of a silicon core surrounded by a porous network of loosely bound silicon dioxide nanoparticles. We find that the balls carry a small net charge on the order of 10−12 C and propose that the nanoparticles are electrostatically bound to the core due to this charge.

Magic Surfaces, Brandi Crystal Moore Dec 2014

Magic Surfaces, Brandi Crystal Moore

Mathematics Undergraduate Theses

Magic figures are discrete, two-dimensional (2-D) objects. We translated the definitions of magic squares and magic circles in an attempt to find three-dimensional (3-D) surfaces that adhere to the same definitions. This is what we defined as a magic surface.

First, we translated these definitions by thinking of the discrete integer entries in the magic squares and magic circles as volumes under the magic surfaces; these were evaluated by volume integrals. We then translated these definitions in a similar way to apply line integral constraints.

We found polynomial functions that satisfied thse re-definitions of conditions for a magic surface. In …
