Rotating Optical Microcavities With Broken Chiral Symmetry, Raktim Sarma, Li Ge, Jan Wiersig, Hui Cao

Yale Day of Data

We develop a finite difference time domain simulation algorithm to simulate photonic structures in a rotating frame. Using, the algorithm, We numerically compute and demonstrate in open microcavities with broken chiral symmetry, quasi-degenerate pairs of co-propagating modes in a non-rotating cavity evolve to counter-propagating modes with rotation. The emission patterns change dramatically by rotation, due to distinct output directions of CW and CCW waves. By tuning the degree of spatial chirality, we maximize the sensitivity of microcavity emission to rotation. The rotation-induced change of emission is orders of magnitude larger than the Sagnac effect, pointing to a promising direction for …

Investigating The Fractal Nature Of Individual User Netflow Data, Levi Malott, Sriram Chellappan Sep 2014

Investigating The Fractal Nature Of Individual User Netflow Data, Levi Malott, Sriram Chellappan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modeling and characterizing Internet traffic has been a widely studied problem since the conception of the Internet. The self-similar, bursty nature of the traffic has led to a number of conventional statistical models that unfortunately provide relatively weak modeling power. Recently, fractal analysis techniques have emerged to better characterize and model Internet traffic data. However, past research studies have focused on describing and quantifying the fractal nature of Internet traffic on user groups, instead of a single user. In this paper the authors investigate the issue of individual users exhibiting fractal (self-similar behavior) behavior across multiple application types. Using real …

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The Shovelnose Sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus remains the most abundant riverine sturgeon species in North American despite the anthropogenic modifications that have occurred throughout their historic range; however, their populations have declined throughout Nebraska since the construction of Fort Randall and Gavins Point Dams. Therefore, the objective of this study was to present the current status of Shovelnose Sturgeon in the Missouri River along Nebraska’s border. Data was acquired from 2003 to 2012 from all reaches of the Missouri River along Nebraska’s eastern border. Catch rates of Shovelnose Sturgeon increased in a downstream trend and were highest in the reach below …

Angiopoietin-1, Angiopoietin-2 And Bicarbonate As Diagnostic Biomarkers In Children With Severe Sepsis, Kun Wang, Vineet Bhandari, John S. Giuliano, Corey S. O′Hern, Mark D. Shattuck, Michael Kirby Sep 2014

Angiopoietin-1, Angiopoietin-2 And Bicarbonate As Diagnostic Biomarkers In Children With Severe Sepsis, Kun Wang, Vineet Bhandari, John S. Giuliano, Corey S. O′Hern, Mark D. Shattuck, Michael Kirby

Publications and Research

Severe pediatric sepsis continues to be associated with high mortality rates in children. Thus, an important area of biomedical research is to identify biomarkers that can classify sepsis severity and outcomes. The complex and heterogeneous nature of sepsis makes the prospect of the classification of sepsis severity using a single biomarker less likely. Instead, we employ machine learning techniques to validate the use of a multiple biomarkers scoring system to determine the severity of sepsis in critically ill children. The study was based on clinical data and plasma samples provided by a tertiary care center's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) …

Dmctcp: Desynchronized Multi-Channel Tcp For High Speed Access Networks With Tiny Buffers, Cheng Cui, Lin Xue, Chui Hui Chiu, Praveenkumar Kondikoppa, Seung Jong Park

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The past few years have witnessed debate on how to improve link utilization of high-speed tiny-size buffer routers. Widely argued proposals for TCP traffic to realize acceptable link capacities mandate: (i) over-provisioned core link bandwidth; and (ii) non-bursty flows; and (iii) tens of thousands of asynchronous flows. However, in high-speed access networks where flows are bursty, sparse and synchronous, TCP traffic suffer severely from routers with tiny buffers. We propose a new congestion control algorithm called Desyn-chronized Multi-Channel TCP (DMCTCP) that creates a flow with multiple channels. It avoids TCP loss synchronization by desynchronizing channels, and it avoids sending rate …

Model Of Steady State Cyclohexane Oxidation For Ketone-Alcohol (K-A) Oil Production, Rudy Agustriyanto, Akbarningrum Fatmawati Sep 2014

Model Of Steady State Cyclohexane Oxidation For Ketone-Alcohol (K-A) Oil Production, Rudy Agustriyanto, Akbarningrum Fatmawati

Makara Journal of Science

Cylohexane oxidation is of great industrial importance in the production of intermediates for the manufacture of nylon6 and nylon-6,6. Most cyclohexane is commercially converted into a cyclohexanone–cyclohexanol mixture (known as K-A oil) by catalytic oxidation. K-A (Ketone-Alcohol) oil is then used as a raw material for adipic acid and caprolactam production. Practically, if the cyclohexanol content of KA oil is higher than that of cyclohexanone, it is more profitable to convert it into adipic acid; otherwise caprolactam production is more likely. The steady state cyclohexane oxidation reaction model in a stirred tank reactor for K-A oil production is presented and …

Development Of Immunochromatographic Strip Tests For Selective And Quantitative Detection Of Melamine, Wiyogo P. Wicaksono, Tribidasari A. Ivandini, Endang Saepudin, Yasuaki Einaga

Makara Journal of Science

An immunochromatographic strip test based on the complex reaction of antigen-antibody (melamine-antimelamine) was developed for quantitative detection of melamine. Gold nanoparticles (AuNP) were used to form AuNP-labeled antibody, which then acted as a biosensor. Melamine quantification was performed by the determination of AuNP using anodic stripping voltammetry technique with a boron-doped diamond as the working electrode. With sample volume of 100 µL and immunoreaction time of 7 min, the developed immunochromatographic strip test produced a linear calibration curve for melamine concentration range of 0–0.6 mg/L, with detection limit of 0.1 mg/L and RSD of ~5%. Furthermore, negative results were obtained …

Phase Diagrams And Current Density Profiles Of The Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process In Two Dimensions, For A Three-Way Junction, Rini Septiana, Annisa Indriawati, Wipsar Sunu Brams Dwandaru

Makara Journal of Science

This study explores a dynamical model called the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) in two dimensions (2D). An open boundary condition is specified for the model, and sequential updating dynamics are used as the dynamical rule. The system studied is a discrete 2D system of lattice sites, which are modified into a three-way junction. Two cases are considered: a three-way junction with two entrances and one exit, and a three-way junction with one entrance and two exits. The density and current density of the system are determined numerically, such that a phase diagram is obtained. The continuity equation describing …

E-Darwin: Energy Aware Disaster Recovery Network Using Wifi Tethering, Mayank Raj, Krishna Kant, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose a novel architecture called Energy Aware Disaster Recovery Network using Wi-Fi Tethering (E-DARWIN). The underlying idea is to make use of Wi-Fi Tethering technology ubiquitously available on wireless devices, like smartphones and tablets, to set up an ad hoc network for data collection in disaster scenarios. To this end, we design novel mechanisms, which aid in autonomous creation of the ad hoc network, distribution of data capturing task among the devices, and collection of data with minimum delay. Specifically, we design and implement a distributed coalition formation game for distributing the data capturing task among …

Synthetic Lethality As A Promising Approach For Targeted Cancer Prevention, Wei Tu, Hua Wang, Guang Peng Sep 2014

Synthetic Lethality As A Promising Approach For Targeted Cancer Prevention, Wei Tu, Hua Wang, Guang Peng

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Carcinogenesis is recognized as a multistep process. It occurs over a relative long span of time, which offers intervention opportunities for cancer prevention [1] . Using drugs to prevent cancer rather than treat cancer is the major research goal in the field of ‘chemoprevention’. Tremendous research efforts have been devoted toward using natural, synthetic or biological agents to prevent, suppress or delay the initiation and or the progression of premalignant cells to cancer [1] . However a big challenge for effective cancer prevention is to identify chemoprevention agents with demonstrable efficacy and safety for healthy general …

Surface Treatments To Reduce Leakage Current In Homojunction In0:53ga0:47as Pin Diodes For Tfet Applications, Abhinav Gaur Sep 2014

Surface Treatments To Reduce Leakage Current In Homojunction In0:53ga0:47as Pin Diodes For Tfet Applications, Abhinav Gaur

Theses

In the field of low power electronics, Tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs) are gaining momentum due to aggressive voltage scaling. To enable scaling of power supply while maintaining a high Ion, a steep subthreshold slope and low I0 are required. A TFET operates as a gated PIN diode under reverse bias with the intrinsic region as the channel.

This study focuses on minimizing I0 in a III-V homojunction PIN diode. I0 or leakage current is the current owing in a PIN diode under reverse bias, that forms the o-state current (Vgate = 0 V) in a TFET. Various surface treatment combinations …
