The Scientific Theories Of Michael Faraday And James Clerk Maxwell, Shannon P. Israelsen Sep 2014

The Scientific Theories Of Michael Faraday And James Clerk Maxwell, Shannon P. Israelsen

The Purdue Historian

This paper explores the role of mathematical formalism in physics theories through an analysis of the work of physicists Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell in the field of electromagnetism. After a brief description of the educational backgrounds of each scientist, their views on the nature of physics theory and its relationship to mathematics are contrasted. Faraday sought a mathematics-free theory to describe the results of his experiments, producing a family of concepts that became the roots of electromagnetic field theory. Maxwell built upon these concepts, giving them robust mathematical expression and incorporating them into one unified theoretical picture. An …

A Test Of The Mean Distance Method For Forest Regeneration Assessment, Daniel Unger, Jeremy P. Stovall, Brian P. Oswald, David Kulhavy, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Publications

A new distance-based estimator for forest regeneration assessment, the mean distance method, was developed by combining ideas and techniques from the wandering quarter method, T-square sampling and the random pairs method. The performance of the mean distance method was compared to conventional 4.05 square meter plot sampling through simulation analysis on 405 square meter blocks of a field surveyed clumped distribution and a computer generated random distribution at different levels of density of 100, 50 and 25%. The mean distance method accurately estimated density on the random populations but the mean distance method estimates were more variable than those of …

Warming, Competition, And Bromus Tectorum Population Growth Across An Elevation Gradient, Aldo Compagnoni, Peter B. Adler Sep 2014

Warming, Competition, And Bromus Tectorum Population Growth Across An Elevation Gradient, Aldo Compagnoni, Peter B. Adler

Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah

Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is one of the most problematic invasive plant species in North America and climate change threatens to exacerbate its impacts. We conducted a two‐year field experiment to test the effect of warming, competition, and seed source on cheatgrass performance across an elevation gradient in northern Utah. We hypothesized that warming would increase cheatgrass performance, but that warming effects would be limited by competing vegetation and by local adaptation of cheatgrass seed sources. The warming treatment relied on open top chambers, we removed vegetation to assess the effect of competition from neighboring vegetation, and we reciprocally …

Grades Five And Six Students’ Representation Of Meaning In Collaborative Wiki Writing, Shelley Stagg Peterson, Christine Portier

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This paper examined grades 5 and 6 students’ participation in wikis while writing reports on social studies topics. An analysis of eight wikis showed that students represented meanings they had constructed about their topics by engaging in knowledge telling practices (e.g., introducing, stating, or repeating information or an idea and developing previous ideas with examples, statistics or other information) more frequently than they engaged in knowledge transforming processes, such as drawing conclusions, identifying cause-effect relationships, or making inferences or judgements. Our research shows that Bereiter and Scardamalia’s model (1987) is useful to inform the development of tools for assessing students’ …

Electric Vehicle Life Cycle Cost Assessment, Florida Solar Energy Center, Richard Raustad Sep 2014

Electric Vehicle Life Cycle Cost Assessment, Florida Solar Energy Center, Richard Raustad

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The Electric Vehicle Transportation Center (EVTC) has developed a life cycle cost (LCC) model to include all reasonable costs associated with vehicle ownership over a 5, 10, 15, or 20-year period. The EVTC LCC model compares ownership costs of conventional vehicles to plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Internal combustion engines using gasoline, ethanol, or diesel are considered. The analysis includes costs for tires, insurance and maintenance, federal incentives, state tax, dealership fee, and financed interest payments. Traction battery replacement costs are difficult to ascertain yet are included to investigate their impact on overall life cycle costs. Economic factors used …

Gpu Computation Checkpoint/Restart Scheme With Application-Level Stacks, Xinyuan Guo Sep 2014

Gpu Computation Checkpoint/Restart Scheme With Application-Level Stacks, Xinyuan Guo

Student Theses and Dissertations

To achieve high performance parallel computing, the graphic processing unit (GPU) plays a critical role. NVIDIA invented CUDA as a parallel processing platform and programming model in the late 1990s. With CUDA, we can directly use GPU with C, C++, Fortran, Java or Python code by NVCC compiler. We introduced checkpoint/restart scheme and computation states migration strategy for fault tolerance. Checkpoint/Restart scheme is used to save all the computation state in run-time for later restoration if necessary. Migrating computation state is the process of moving computation states from one heavily loaded host to a lightly loaded host for load balancing …

Towards A Dynamic View Of Genetic Networks: A Kalman Filtering Framework For Recovering Temporally-Rewiring Stable Networks From Undersampled Data, Jehandad Khan Sep 2014

Towards A Dynamic View Of Genetic Networks: A Kalman Filtering Framework For Recovering Temporally-Rewiring Stable Networks From Undersampled Data, Jehandad Khan

Theses and Dissertations

It is widely accepted that cellular requirements and environmental conditions dictate the architecture of genetic regulatory networks. Nonetheless, the status quo in regulatory network modeling and analysis assumes an invariant network topology over time. We refocus on a dynamic perspective of genetic networks, one that can uncover substantial topological changes in network structure during biological processes such as developmental growth and cancer progression. We propose a novel outlook on the inference of time-varying genetic networks, from a limited number of noisy observations, by formulating the networks estimation as a target tracking problem. Assuming linear dynamics, we formulate a constrained Kalman …

The Energy Conversion Playground (Ecp) Design Task: Assessing How Students Think About Technical And Non-Technical Considerations In Sustainable Community Development, Andrea Mazzurco Ph.D., James L. Huff Ph.D., Brent K. Jesiek Ph.D.

Faculty Research and Publications

Students in global service-learning and similar programs frequently encounter substantial social, cultural, political, and ethical differences when working with project partners in different countries and regions. Neglecting such differences can lead to project failures and/or disempowered communities. In response to these challenges, educational resources have been developed to teach students to think about how the people, social structures, and other contextual factors associated with projects can affect, and be affected by, students’ designs. Yet, there remains a scarcity of valid and reliable instruments to evaluate the effectiveness of such interventions. The purpose of this study is create a theoretically and …

We report a measurement of the νμ inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon in the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) on-axis neutrino beam. The measured inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon averaged over the T2K on-axis flux with a mean neutrino energy of 1.51 GeV are (1.444±0.002(stat)-0.157+0.189(syst))×10-38cm2/nucleon and (1.379±0.009(stat)-0.147+0.178(syst))×10-38cm2/nucleon, respectively, and their cross-section ratio is 1.047±0.007(stat)±0.035(syst). These results agree well with the predictions of the neutrino interaction model, and thus we checked the correct treatment of the nuclear effect for iron and hydrocarbon targets in the model within the measurement precisions.

Nick Joaquin And Groovy Kids: A Critique Of His Stories For Children, Anna Katrina Gutierrez Sep 2014

Nick Joaquin And Groovy Kids: A Critique Of His Stories For Children, Anna Katrina Gutierrez

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Nick Joaquin has been lauded as a journalist, historian, and novelist, but to a generation of Filipino readers he is, to recast his own words, a portrait of the children’s storyteller and mythmaker as Filipino. In Pop Stories for Groovy Kids (1979), Joaquin’s fairy tales connect Filipino children to global archetypes while rooting them in Philippine tradition and history. His retellings and adaptations simultaneously foreground and interrogate the role of myth in the construction of the nation and the Filipino child. Like Severino Reyes (“Lola Basyang”) before him, his adaptations subversively resist the political hegemony of the time. This presentation …

Molecular Interactions With Ice: Molecular Embedding, Adsorption, Detection, And Release, K D. Gibson, Grant G. Langlois, Wenxin Li, Daniel Killelea, S J. Sibener

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The interaction of atomic and molecular species with water and ice is of fundamental importance for chemistry. In a previous series of publications, we demonstrated that translational energy activates the embedding of Xe and Kr atoms in the near surface region of ice surfaces. In this paper, we show that inert molecular species may be absorbed in a similar fashion. We also revisit Xe embedding, and further probe the nature of the absorption into the selvedge. CF4 molecules with high translational energies (≥3 eV) were observed to embed in amorphous solid water. Just as with Xe, the initial adsorption rate is …

Reflections Of Self: Images Of People With Specific Learning Disabilities And Attention Deficit / Hyperactive Disorder In Children's Literature, Elizabeth R. Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I explored the portrayals of people with a specific learning disability or with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children's literature. Eighteen books were analyzed to determine what themes and messages were being conveyed to children.

The major themes were about friendship, and overcoming issues associated with a SLD or AD/HD. In addtion, the portrayals suggest that children with SLD and AD/HD have similar problems like their peers with these conditions. However, there were portrayals of stereotypical roles and usage of negative language.
