The Computational Complexity Of Some Games And Puzzles With Theoretical Applications, Vasiliki Despoina Mitsou Oct 2014

The Computational Complexity Of Some Games And Puzzles With Theoretical Applications, Vasiliki Despoina Mitsou

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The subject of this thesis is the algorithmic properties of one- and two-player

games people enjoy playing, such as Sudoku or Chess. Questions asked about puzzles

and games in this context are of the following type: can we design efficient computer

programs that play optimally given any opponent (for a two-player game), or solve

any instance of the puzzle in question?

We examine four games and puzzles and show algorithmic as well as intractability

results. First, we study the wolf-goat-cabbage puzzle, where a man wants to transport

a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage across a river by using a …

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Studies On Lithium And Sodium Electrode Materials For Rechargeable Batteries, Tetiana Nosach

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques are used to study lithium and sodium electrode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. Three projects are described in this thesis. The first two projects involve 6Li, 7Li and 31P NMR studies of two cathode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries. The third project is a study of sodium titanate cathode materials for Na-ion batteries, where 1H, 7Li, and 23Na static and magic angle spinning NMR were used in order to obtain detailed information on the chemical environments.

Text Extraction From Natural Scene: Methodology And Application, Chucai Yi Oct 2014

Text Extraction From Natural Scene: Methodology And Application, Chucai Yi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

With the popularity of the Internet and the smart mobile device, there is an increasing demand for the techniques and applications of image/video-based analytics and information retrieval. Most of these applications can benefit from text information extraction in natural scene. However, scene text extraction is a challenging problem to be solved, due to cluttered background of natural scene and multiple patterns of scene text itself. To solve these problems, this dissertation proposes a framework of scene text extraction.

Scene text extraction in our framework is divided into two components, detection and recognition. Scene text detection is to find out the …

An Algorithmic Approach To The Differential Galois Theory Of Second-Order Linear Differential Equations With Differential Parameters, Carlos Eduardo Arreche Aguayo Oct 2014

An Algorithmic Approach To The Differential Galois Theory Of Second-Order Linear Differential Equations With Differential Parameters, Carlos Eduardo Arreche Aguayo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We present algorithms to compute the differential Galois group G associated via the parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory to a parameterized second-order linear differential equation with respect to d/dx, with coefficients in the field of rational functions F(x) over a differential field F, where we think of the derivations on F as being derivations with respect to parameters. We build on an earlier procedure, developed by Dreyfus, that computes G when the equation is unimodular, assuming either that G is reductive, or else that its maximal reductive quotient is differentially constant. We first show how to modify the space of parametric derivations …

Dynamics Of Nanoparticles In Fluids And At Interfaces, Weikang Chen Oct 2014

Dynamics Of Nanoparticles In Fluids And At Interfaces, Weikang Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis, we use molecular dynamics simulation to study three basic behaviors or properties of nanoparticles: deposition during droplets evaporation, slip boundary condition and Brownian motion. These three problems address the need for an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of nanoparticles in fluids and at interfaces. In the first problem, evaporation of the droplets dispersed with particles, we investigated the distribution of evaporative flux, inner flow field, density and temperature. And we use these numerical experiments to check on our hydrodynamic theory of the "coffee ring" phenomenon. The simulations reveal the connection between the particle interactions and the deposit …

Planetary Improvement: Discourses And Practices Of Green Capitalism In The Cleantech Space, Jesse Adam Goldstein Oct 2014

Planetary Improvement: Discourses And Practices Of Green Capitalism In The Cleantech Space, Jesse Adam Goldstein

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

There is money to be made in saving the planet. A whole host of actors, such as investors, entrepreneurs, engineers, and policy makers have mobilized around our ecological problems, seeking to innovate new `green' and `clean' technologies that can serve a rapidly changing environment. The presumption that such technologies are both necessary and necessarily profitable anchors visions of a `green' capitalism that can and must be brought into existence.

However, just as free markets have never been all that free, why should we presume that green capitalism would be all that green? Instead of attempting to arbit whether or not …

Representational Implications Of The Phonologization Of Contour Tones, Benjamin Kirkland Macaulay Oct 2014

Representational Implications Of The Phonologization Of Contour Tones, Benjamin Kirkland Macaulay

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis bridges accounts of tonogenesis to representations of contour tones in the dominant framework, autosegmental phonology. Accounts of tonogenesis reference phonetic features and structures that are unable to be represented in autosegmental phonology. As these features are required for the phonologization of contour tones, it is argued that they must also receive some representation in the synchrony. This is done under the Evolutionary Phonology framework of sound change. An attempt to reconcile the disparity between perceived phonetic features and synchronic structure is made by discussing the implications of the sequencing of targets within autosegmental contours. This innovation would better …

Selva Simbólica Selva Simbiótica Apuntes Para Una Ecocritica Latinoamericana, Liza Pamela Rosas-Bustos Oct 2014

Selva Simbólica Selva Simbiótica Apuntes Para Una Ecocritica Latinoamericana, Liza Pamela Rosas-Bustos

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation focuses on Latin America's selvatic territories. It argues for prevailing ecological principles as revealed in the selected works of three twentieth-century Latin American story-writers and poets. They portray rainforests as multisensorial lands that encompass bewildering events from which a principle of local authority emerges. This analysis is based on Francisco Coloane's short stories "Tierra del Fuego" and "Cabo de Hornos," Rosario Castellanos'Balún Canán, and Luis Sepúlveda's Un viejo que leía novelas de amor. Such phenomenology is also present on the environmental poetics from Marosa di Giorgio, Cecilia Vicuña, and Leonel Lienlaf linked to emotions of fear, urgency, …

Characterization Of Wide Band Gap Semiconductors And Multiferroic Materials, Bo Cai

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Structural, optical and electrical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO), aluminum nitride (AlN), and lutetium ferrite (LuFe2O4) have been investigated. Temperature dependent Hall Effect measurements were performed between 80 and 800 K for phosphorus (P) and arsenic (As) doped ZnO thin films grown on c-plane sapphire substrate by RF magnetron sputtering. These samples exhibited n-type conductivity throughout the temperature range with carrier concentration of 3.85 × 10 16 cm-3 and 3.65 × 10 17 cm-3 at room temperature for P-doped and As-doped ZnO films, respectively. The Arrhenius plots of free electron concentration of those doped samples showed …

Message Passing Techniques For Statistical Physics And Optimization In Complex Systems, Lin Bo Oct 2014

Message Passing Techniques For Statistical Physics And Optimization In Complex Systems, Lin Bo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Optimization problem has always been considered as a central topic in various areas of science and engineering. It aims at finding the configuration of a large number of variables with which the objective function is optimal. The close relation between optimization problems and statistical physics through the probability measure of the Boltzmann type has brought new theoretical tools from statistical physics of disordered systems to optimization problems. In this thesis, we use message passing techniques, in particular cavity method, developed in the last decades within spin glass theory to study optimization problems in complex systems. In the study of force …

Development Of Cell-Active Inhibitors And Activity-Based Probe Of Cysteine Cathepsins, Dibyendu Dana Oct 2014

Development Of Cell-Active Inhibitors And Activity-Based Probe Of Cysteine Cathepsins, Dibyendu Dana

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Cysteine cathepsins are an important class of enzymes that coordinate a variety of important cellular processes, and are implicated in various types of human diseases. Still however, many of their cellular function remain poorly understood. Chemical biology approaches employing small molecules can be utilized for this purpose. Unfortunately small molecule probes that are cell-permeable and non-peptidyl in nature are scarcely available.

In this work, first a library of sulfonyloxiranes is synthesized. From this library, 2-(2-ethylphenylsulfonyl)oxirane is identified as a selective inhibitor of cysteine cathepsins. Cell-based study reveals that 2-(2-ethylphenylsulfonyl)oxirane is a cell-permeable, covalent, and irreversible inhibitor of cathepsin B with …

Science Identity Transformations Through Place-Based Teaching And Learning In The Natural World, Amy Defelice Oct 2014

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation includes three main components related through a sociocultural lens of identity transformation. The first component describes the Field Studies program for ninth grade students at Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment (BASE High School), and explores how outdoor settings and place-based pedagogies can be used to enhance urban students' science identities. Student researchers took digital photographs of their Field Studies experiences and met in cogenerative dialogues with me, their teacher, where we shared our reflections. The second component explains students' experiences and reactions to a week-long place-based geoscience program held over spring break at Prospect Park. This …

Development And Applications Of Mass Spectrometric Methods For Phosphorylation Analysis, Hsin-Pin Ho Oct 2014

Development And Applications Of Mass Spectrometric Methods For Phosphorylation Analysis, Hsin-Pin Ho

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Protein phosphorylation modification regulates numerous cellular functions by a reversible and selective control of kinases and phosphatases. To understand the entire dynamic network of phosphorylation requires sensitive and reliable quantification of phosphorylation, measurements that can be achieved by mass spectrometry. In this research, we established efficient MALDI-mass spectrometric methods as strategies for single- or multi-site phosphorylation quantification without the use of isotopes, chromatography and calibration curves. The methods were assessed by analyzing peptide standards with different single-multiple phosphorylation sites, showing a wide dynamic range, good accuracy and reproducibility. This is the first label-free MALDI method without using a calibration methodology …

Combinatorial Properties Of Polyiamonds, Christopher Larson Oct 2014

Combinatorial Properties Of Polyiamonds, Christopher Larson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Polyiamonds are plane geometric figures constructed by pasting together equilateral triangles edge-to-edge. It is shown that a diophantine equation involving vertices of degrees 2, 3, 5 and 6 holds for all polyiamonds; then an Eberhard-type theorem is proved, showing that any four-tuple of non-negative integers that satisfies the diophantine equation can be realized geometrically by a polyiamond. Further combinatorial and graph-theoretic aspects of polyiamonds are discussed, including a characterization of those polyiamonds that are three-connected and so three-polytopal, a result on Hamiltonicity, and constructions that use minimal numbers of triangles in realizing four-vectors.

Threat Assessment: Do Lone Terrorists Differ From Other Lone Offenders?, Diane M. Zierhoffer Oct 2014

Threat Assessment: Do Lone Terrorists Differ From Other Lone Offenders?, Diane M. Zierhoffer

Journal of Strategic Security

This study evaluates the viability of a threat assessment model developed to calculate the risk of targeted violence as a predictor of violence by potential lone terrorists. There is no profile, to date, which would assist in the identification of a lone terrorist prior to an attack. The threat assessment model developed by Borum, Fein, Vossekuil, and Berglund and described in “Threat Assessment: Defining an approach for evaluating risk of targeted violence” (1999) poses ten questions about the patterns of thinking and behaviors that may precipitate an attack of targeted violence.

Three terrorists are studied to assess the model’s value …

Hydro-Climate Temporal Variations And Their Influences On Net Primary Production In A Eurasian Steppe Watershed, Xiaomin Yang Oct 2014

Hydro-Climate Temporal Variations And Their Influences On Net Primary Production In A Eurasian Steppe Watershed, Xiaomin Yang

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Climate, which is the most important factor that influences Net Primary Productivity, has been detected changing all over the world. The confounding effects of step change invalidate the stationarity assumption of commonly used trend analysis methods such as the Mann-Kendall test technique, so previous studies have failed to explain inconsistencies between detected trends and observed large anomalies. In this research, by formulating a trend analysis approach that considers nonstationary due to step changes, trends and extreme occurrences of precipitation, temperature, and runoff in annual, seasonal, and monthly scales were analyzed in a mid-latitude Eurasian steppe watershed in northeast China, and …

Motivic Integration Over Nilpotent Structures, Andrew Ryan Stout Oct 2014

Motivic Integration Over Nilpotent Structures, Andrew Ryan Stout

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis concerns developing the notion of Motivic Integration in such a way that it captures infinitesimal information yet reduces to the classical notion of motivic integration for reduced schemes. Moreover, I extend the notion of Motivic Integration from a discrete valuation ring to any complete Noetherian ring with residue field $\kappa$, where $\kappa$ is any field. Schoutens' functorial approach (as opposed to the traditional model theoretic approach) allows for some very general notions of motivic integration. However, the central focus is on using this general framework to study generically smooth schemes, then non-reduced schemes, and then, finally, formal schemes. …

Study Of Polyaniline For Use In An Organic Field Effect Transistor, Thomas Martin Sprinkle Oct 2014

Study Of Polyaniline For Use In An Organic Field Effect Transistor, Thomas Martin Sprinkle

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Polyaniline's emeraldine base form was synthesized via chemical polymerization in HCl acidic media utilizing ammonium persulfate as the oxidant. Synthesis was done at room temperature and -30 'C and characterized for differences by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. Methanol soxhlet extraction was done to increase number average molecular weight from 77,400 to 81,000 and decrease the poly dispersity index from 3.82 to 2.14. Films were cast using N, N'- Dimethylpropyleneurea and N-Methylpyrrolidone and showed poor mechanical properties upon acidic doping.

Cyclic voltammetry was done with HC1 as the acidic media and an ITO coated slide as the …

First Record Of The Tropical House Gecko Hemidactylus Mabouia (Moreau De Jonnès, 1818) In Texas, Alejandro Fierro-Cabo, August Rentfro

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Invasions of the tropical house gecko Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnes, 1818) in the tropical Americas are well documented. While this gecko has been reported as well established and expanding its range in Florida, here we document the first record in the United States outside of this state. We detected a small reproducing population in Cameron County, Brownsville, Texas. We expect a rapid colonization of buildings by this species in southern Texas. We consider that this potential invasion poses novel obstacles to the continued presence of the earlier invasive Mediterranean gecko Hemidactylus turcicus (Linnaeus, 1758) across Texas

Light Localization Induced By A Random Imaginary Refractive Index, A. Basiri, Yaron Bromberg, Alexey Yamilov, Tsampikos Kottos Oct 2014

Light Localization Induced By A Random Imaginary Refractive Index, A. Basiri, Yaron Bromberg, Alexey Yamilov, Tsampikos Kottos

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show the emergence of light localization in arrays of coupled optical waveguides with randomness only in the imaginary part of their refractive index and develop a one-parameter scaling theory for the normalized participation number of Floquet-Bloch modes. This localization introduces a different length scale in the decay of the autocorrelation function of a paraxial beam propagation. Our results are relevant to a vast family of systems with randomness in the dissipative part of their impedance spatial profile.

Enhanced Rare-Region Effects In The Contact Process With Long-Range Correlated Disorder, Ahmed K. Ibrahim, Hatem Barghathi, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the nonequilibrium phase transition in the disordered contact process in the presence of long-range spatial disorder correlations. These correlations greatly increase the probability for finding rare regions that are locally in the active phase while the bulk system is still in the inactive phase. Specifically, if the correlations decay as a power of the distance, the rare-region probability is a stretched exponential of the rare-region size rather than a simple exponential as is the case for uncorrelated disorder. As a result, the Griffiths singularities are enhanced and take a non-power-law form. The critical point itself is of infinite-randomness …

Bound Estimator Of Hiv Prevalence: Application To Malawi, Tomoki Fujii, Denis H. Y. Leung Oct 2014

Bound Estimator Of Hiv Prevalence: Application To Malawi, Tomoki Fujii, Denis H. Y. Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

To find lower and upper bounds of HIV prevalence in Malawi under mild and intuitive assumptions to assess the importance of the refusal issue in the estimation of HIV prevalence. Methods: We derive bounds based on the following two key assumptions: (i) Among those who have never taken an HIV test before, those who refuse to take an HIV test (hereafter “refusers”) have at least as much risk to be HIV positive as those who participate in the HIV test, and (ii) among the refusers, those who have a prior testing experience are at least as likely to be HIV …

Is Urban Food Demand In The Philippines Different From China?, Tomoki Fujii Oct 2014

Is Urban Food Demand In The Philippines Different From China?, Tomoki Fujii

Research Collection School Of Economics

It is essential to understand the consumption pattern of food and how it changes over time to formulate sound economic policies as well as marketing and pricing strategies. In this study, we estimate the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System with six rounds of the Family Income Expenditure Survey exploiting the conditional linearity of the demand system. We find that the Filipino diet has become westernized and that the changes in urban food demand elasticities are qualitatively similar to those in urban China, especially for meat, fruits, and vegetables. We also offer some policy and business implications.

Complementarity In Institutional Quality In Bilateral Fdi Flows, Pao Li Chang Oct 2014

Complementarity In Institutional Quality In Bilateral Fdi Flows, Pao Li Chang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops a theory on the complementarity in institutional qualities between the home and host countries in bilateral FDI. Firms ‘born’ in countries with poorer institutions tend to invest more in informal institutions to mitigate political risk. The marginal advantage of higher informal institution endowment is bigger when the political risk at the FDI destination is higher. Thus, all else being equal, the ranking of the MNE’s home institutions predicts the ranking of the institutional qualities of their FDI destinations. I find robust empirical evidence for this theoretical prediction using bilateral FDI for 219 economies during year 2001-2010.
