Gender Diversity In The Patent Bar, Saurabh Vishnubhakat Oct 2014

Gender Diversity In The Patent Bar, Saurabh Vishnubhakat

Faculty Scholarship

This article describes the state of gender diversity across technology and geography within the U.S. patent bar. The findings rely on a new gender-matched dataset, the first public dataset of its kind, not only of all attorneys and agents registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, but also of attorneys and agents on patents granted by the USPTO. To enable follow-on research, the article describes all data and methodology and offers suggestions for refinement. This study is timely in view of renewed interest about the participation of women in the U.S. innovation ecosystem, notably the provision …

Transients In The Synchronization Of Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, J. J. P. Veerman Oct 2014

Transients In The Synchronization Of Oscillator Arrays, Carlos E. Cantos, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this note is threefold. First we state a few conjectures that allow us to rigorously derive a theory which is asymptotic in N (the number of agents) that describes transients in large arrays of (identical) linear damped harmonic oscillators in R with completely decentralized nearest neighbor interaction. We then use the theory to establish that in a certain range of the parameters transients grow linearly in the number of agents (and faster outside that range). Finally, in the regime where this linear growth occurs we give the constant of proportionality as a function of the signal velocities …

An Evaluation Of Physical Activity On The Reading Achievement Of Middle School Students, Christina N. Phillips Oct 2014

An Evaluation Of Physical Activity On The Reading Achievement Of Middle School Students, Christina N. Phillips

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This study analyzed the relationship between reading achievement and the use of Exergames an intervention, to investigate the areas in which physical activity can improve reading achievement among struggling readers, and to understand the amount of minutes and levels of intensity of physically active adolescents that supports reading achievement. The need for an innovative reading intervention has become more urgent because of the lack of improved reading achievement in the United States. In addition, students should not lose access to physical activity in an attempt to increase reading achievement. Using a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest, nonequivalent group design, this study attempted to …

The Law Is Made Of Stories: Erasing The False Dichotomy Between Stories And Legal Rules, Stephen Paskey Oct 2014

The Law Is Made Of Stories: Erasing The False Dichotomy Between Stories And Legal Rules, Stephen Paskey

Journal Articles

When lawyers think of legal analysis, they think chiefly of logic and reason. Stories are secondary. As Michael Smith explains, our legal system “is not founded on narrative reasoning” but on “a commitment to the rule of law.” The article suggests that this dichotomy between “rule-based reasoning” and “narrative reasoning” is false, and that narrative and stories are central to legal reasoning, including rule-based reasoning. In doing so, the article uses literary narrative theory to show that every governing legal rule has the structure of a “stock story”: the elements of the rule correspond to elements of a story. It …

Getting Beyond Abstract Confusion: How The United Kingdom's Jurisprudence Can Aid In Developing An Analytic Framework For Patent-Eligibility In Light Of Alice V. Cls Bank, Brendon Beheshti Oct 2014

Getting Beyond Abstract Confusion: How The United Kingdom's Jurisprudence Can Aid In Developing An Analytic Framework For Patent-Eligibility In Light Of Alice V. Cls Bank, Brendon Beheshti

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

This Article advocates consideration of the United Kingdom’s jurisprudence as persuasive authority for implementation of a new framework for analysis of subject matter eligibility of computer-implemented inventions in light of the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International. The U.K.’s patent jurisprudence provides a more developed and clear analytic framework that conforms to the policy objectives of Alice, while also avoiding the conceptual problem of determining what is “abstract.” The result is a more useful and concrete analytic framework that also reduces conflicts of laws, and thus can help spur innovation across the …

Team Nathan Suspension, Frankie J. Wiggins, Alex D. Seitz, Justin P. Bautista Oct 2014

Team Nathan Suspension, Frankie J. Wiggins, Alex D. Seitz, Justin P. Bautista

Mechanical Engineering

Nathan Cooper is an 8-year old boy with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA has affected Nathan’s muscle development and requires him to use the Standing Dani™ mobility device. The Standing Dani is a motorized standing wheelchair, or Wheelstand. Nathan controls and uses it to get around. Though the Standing Dani performs well for most functions, it has some distinct issues. The primary issue that this project addresses is its lack of suspension and the discomfort that Nathan feels as a result. After talking with our client, we developed several specifications generally related to geometry, safety, vehicle dynamics, and reliability. Many …

The Unimodality Of Pure O-Sequences Of Type Three In Three Variables, Bernadette Boyle Oct 2014

The Unimodality Of Pure O-Sequences Of Type Three In Three Variables, Bernadette Boyle

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Since the 1970’s, great interest has been taken in the study of pure O-sequences, which are in bijective correspondence to the Hilbert functions of Artinian level monomial algebras. Much progress has been made in classifying these by their shape. It has been shown that all monomial complete intersections, Artinian algebras in two variables and Artinian level monomial algebras with type two in both three and four variables have unimodal Hilbert functions. This paper proves that Artinian level monomial algebras of type three in three variables have unimodal Hilbert functions. We will also discuss the licciness of these algebras.

Configuration Spaces Of Convex And Embedded Polygons In The Plane, Don H. Shimamoto, Mary K. Wootters , '08 Oct 2014

Configuration Spaces Of Convex And Embedded Polygons In The Plane, Don H. Shimamoto, Mary K. Wootters , '08

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

This paper concerns the topology of configuration spaces of linkages whose underlying graph is a single cycle. Assume that the edge lengths are such that there are no configurations in which all the edges lie along a line. The main results are that, modulo translations and rotations, each component of the space of convex configurations is homeomorphic to a closed Euclidean ball and each component of the space of embedded configurations is homeomorphic to a Euclidean space. This represents an elaboration on the topological information that follows from the convexification theorem of Connelly, Demaine, and Rote.

Prognostic Value Of Estimated Functional Capacity Incremental To Cardiac Biomarkers In Stable Cardiac Patients, W.H. Wilson Tang, Eric J. Topol, Yiying Fan, Yuping Wu, Leslie Cho, Cindy Stevenson, Stephen G. Ellis, Stanley L. Hazen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Background: Few studies have investigated functional capacity self-assessment tools in either prediction of future major adverse cardiac outcomes beyond all-cause mortality or direct comparisons with clinically available biomarkers. Methods and Results: We estimated functional capacity using the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI) questionnaire in 8987 sequential stable patients without acute coronary syndrome who were undergoing elective diagnostic coronary angiography with 3-year follow-up of major adverse cardiac events (death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or stroke). A low DASI score provided independent prediction of a 4.8-fold increase in future risk of incident major adverse cardiac events at 3 years (quartiles 1 versus 4 …

The Cost Of Nothing Trumps The Value Of Everything: The Failure Of Regulatory Economics To Keep Pace With Improvements In Quantitative Risk Analysis, Adam M. Finkel Oct 2014

The Cost Of Nothing Trumps The Value Of Everything: The Failure Of Regulatory Economics To Keep Pace With Improvements In Quantitative Risk Analysis, Adam M. Finkel

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

The entire U.S. federal regulatory apparatus, especially that part devoted to reducing (or deciding not to reduce) risks to the environment, health, and safety (EHS), relies increasingly on judgments of whether each regulation would yield benefits in excess of its costs. These judgments depend in turn upon empirical analysis of the potential increases in longevity, quality of life, and environmental quality that the regulation can confer, and also of the economic resources needed to “purchase” those benefits—analyses whose quality can range from extremely fine to disappointingly poor. The quality of a risk analysis (from which the benefits of control are …

A Study Of Shock Analysis Using The Finite Element Method Verified With Euler-Bernoulli Beam Theory; Mechanical Effects Due To Pulse Width Variation Of Shock Inputs; And Evaluation Of Shock Response Of A Mixed Flow Fan

David Jonathan González Campos

For many engineers that use finite element analysis or FEA, it is very important to know how to properly model and obtain accurate solutions for complicated loading conditions such as shock loading. Transient acceleration loads, such as shocks, are not as common as static loads. Analyzing these types of problems is less understood, which is the basis for this study. FEA …

A Tale Of Two Trials: The Impact Of 5Α-Reductase Inhibition On Prostate Cancer (Review), John M. Lacy, Natasha Kyprianou

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The use of 5α-reductase inhibitors (5α-RIs) as prostate cancer chemoprevention agents is controversial. Two large randomized trials, the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) and the Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Events (REDUCE) Trial, have both shown a decreased incidence of prostate cancer in patients administered with 5α-RIs. Both studies showed, however, an increased risk of higher-grade prostate cancer. Numerous studies have since analyzed the inherent biases in these landmark studies and have used mathematical modeling to estimate the true incidence of prostate cancer and the risk for high-grade prostate cancer in patients undergoing 5α-RI treatment. All primary publications associated …

Students often have difficulties making connections between rational number concepts and their relationships to other mathematical applications and real world situations (Johanning, 2008). Researchers have advocated that students should experience using rational numbers with multiple and varied models integrated into context (Empson & Levi, 2011). In this article, we discuss a lesson that drew upon probabilistic reasoning as a means to help students connect rational number reasoning to real world situations. Probabilistic situations act as an extension to rational numbers in that they often involve fractional models and encourage students to reason through topics, such as part to whole relationships …

How Discordant Morphological And Molecular Evolution Among Microorganisms Can Revise Our Notions Of Biodiversity On Earth, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Haywood Dail Laughinghouse, Angela M. Oliverio, Feng Gao, Laura A. Katz Oct 2014

Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Microscopy has revealed tremendous diversity of bacterial and eukaryotic forms. Recent molecular analyses show discordance in estimates of biodiversity between morphological and molecular analyses. Moreover, phylogenetic analyses of the diversity of microbial forms reveal evidence of convergence at scales as deep as interdomain: morphologies shared between bacteria and eukaryotes. Here, we highlight examples of such discordance, focusing on exemplary lineages such as testate amoebae, ciliates, and cyanobacteria. These have long histories of morphological study, enabling deeper analyses on both the molecular and morphological sides. We discuss examples in two main categories: (i) morphologically identical (or highly similar) individuals that are …
