Fire Behavior Of Bolted Connections, Qiaqia Zhu Oct 2014

Fire Behavior Of Bolted Connections, Qiaqia Zhu

Open Access Theses

Bolted connection failures have been observed in building fires and large-scale structural fire tests. Limited information is available on plate bearing behavior at elevated temperatures. The failure mode of a shear-tab connection could change from plate bearing failure to bolt shear failure between 400 (degree Celsius) °C to 600°C. Component-based models have been used to predict the behavior of bolted connections. Earlier researchers have developed simple mathematical models to represent the force-displacement relationships of bolt shear and plate bearing components of bolted connections. However, these models need to be verified experimentally for US building construction and materials. Therefore, eleven single-bolted …

Probabilistic Uncertainty Quantification And Experiment Design For Nonlinear Models: Applications In Systems Biology, Vu Cao Duy Thien Dinh Oct 2014

Probabilistic Uncertainty Quantification And Experiment Design For Nonlinear Models: Applications In Systems Biology, Vu Cao Duy Thien Dinh

Open Access Dissertations

Despite the ever-increasing interest in understanding biology at the system level, there are several factors that hinder studies and analyses of biological systems. First, unlike systems from other applied fields whose parameters can be effectively identified, biological systems are usually unidentifiable, even in the ideal case when all possible system outputs are known with high accuracy. Second, the presence of multivariate bifurcations often leads the system to behaviors that are completely different in nature. In such cases, system outputs (as function of parameters/inputs) are usually discontinuous or have sharp transitions across domains with different behaviors. Finally, models from systems biology …

A Stochastic Multi-Criteria Assessment Of Security Of Transportation Assets, Michelle Sophie Dojutrek Oct 2014

A Stochastic Multi-Criteria Assessment Of Security Of Transportation Assets, Michelle Sophie Dojutrek

Open Access Dissertations

Transportation project evaluation and prioritization use traditional performance measures including travel time, safety, user costs, economic efficiency, and environmental quality. The project impacts in terms of enhancing the infrastructure resilience or mitigating the consequences of infrastructure damage in the event of disaster occurrence are rarely considered in project evaluation. This dissertation presents a methodology to address this issue so that in evaluating and prioritizing investments, infrastructure with low security can receive the attention they deserve. Secondly, the methodology can be used for evaluating and prioritizing candidate investments dedicated specifically to security enhancement. In defining security as a function of threat …

Techniques For Improving The Scalability Of Data Center Networks, Advait Dixit Oct 2014

Techniques For Improving The Scalability Of Data Center Networks, Advait Dixit

Open Access Dissertations

Data centers require highly scalable data and control planes for ensuring good performance of distributed applications. Along the data plane, network throughput and latency directly impact application performance metrics. This has led researchers to propose high bisection bandwidth network topologies based on multi-rooted trees for data center networks. However, such topologies require efficient traffic splitting algorithms to fully utilize all available bandwidth. Along the control plane, the centralized controller for software-defined networks presents new scalability challenges. The logically centralized controller needs to scale according to network demands. Also, since all services are implemented in the centralized controller, it should allow …

Application Of Integer Quadratic Programming In Detection Of High-Dimensional Wireless Systems, Ali Ahmed Elghariani Oct 2014

Application Of Integer Quadratic Programming In Detection Of High-Dimensional Wireless Systems, Ali Ahmed Elghariani

Open Access Dissertations

High-dimensional wireless systems have recently generated a great deal of interest due to their ability to accommodate increasing demands for high transmission data rates with high communication reliability. Examples of such large-scale systems include single-input, single-output symbol spread OFDM system, large-scale single-user multi-input multi-output (MIMO) OFDM systems, and large-scale multiuser MIMO systems. In these systems, the number of symbols required to be jointly detected at the receiver is relatively large. The challenge with the practical realization of these systems is to design a detection scheme that provides high communication reliability with reasonable computational complexity, even as the number of simultaneously …

Hierarchical Cell Fluid Extracellular Matrix Interaction In Cell Microenvironment, Soham Ghosh Oct 2014

Hierarchical Cell Fluid Extracellular Matrix Interaction In Cell Microenvironment, Soham Ghosh

Open Access Dissertations

Hierarchical structural interactions between components of cell microenvironment, the extracellular matrix (ECM), cytoplasm, nucleus and fluid, are important phenomena that decide cell level physiological process and tissue engineering applications. One of those tissue engineering modalities is freezing of biomaterials, important in a wide variety of biomedical applications including cryopreservation and cryosurgeries. In order to design these applications, freezing-induced changes of the cells and tissues and corresponding biophysical mechanisms need to be well understood. Although the effects of freezing on cells in suspension have been extensively studied, the intracellular mechanics of cells embedded in the extracellular matrix (ECM) during freezing are …

Efficient And Coherent Frequency Conversions And Nonlinear Interference In Optical Parametric And Atomic Raman Processes, Yu Ding Oct 2014

Efficient And Coherent Frequency Conversions And Nonlinear Interference In Optical Parametric And Atomic Raman Processes, Yu Ding

Open Access Dissertations

By implementing a parametric down-conversion process with a strong signal field injection, we demonstrate that frequency down-conversion from pump photons to idler photons can be a coherent process. Contrary to a common misconception, we show that the process can be free of quantum noise. With an interference experiment, we demonstrate that coherence is preserved in the conversion process. This technique could lead to a high-fidelity quantum state transfer from a high-frequency photon to a low-frequency photon and connect a missing link in quantum networks. ^ Coherent and efficient nonlinear interaction and frequency conversion are of great interest in many areas …

Dynamic Control Of Plasmonic Resonances With Graphene Based Nanostructures, Naresh Kumar Emani Oct 2014

Dynamic Control Of Plasmonic Resonances With Graphene Based Nanostructures, Naresh Kumar Emani

Open Access Dissertations

Light incident on a metallic structure excites collective oscillations of electrons termed as plasmons. These plasmons are useful in control and manipulation of information in nanoscale dimensions and at high operating frequencies. Hence, the field of plasmonics opens up the possibility of developing nanoscale optoelectronic circuitry for computing and sensing applications. One of the challenges in this effort is the lack of tunable plasmonic resonance. Currently, the resonant wavelength of plasmonic structure is fixed by the material and structural parameters. Post-fabrication dynamic control of a plasmonic resonance is rather limited.^ In this thesis we explore the combination of optoelectrical properties …

On The Occurrences Of Motifs In Recursive Trees, With Applications To Random Structures, Mohan Gopaladesikan

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation we study three problems related to motifs and recursive trees. In the first problem we consider a collection of uncorrelated motifs and their occurrences on the fringe of random recursive trees. We compute the exact mean and variance of the multivariate random vector of the counts of occurrences of the motifs. We further use the Cramér-Wold device and the contraction method to show an asymptotic convergence in distribution to a multivariate normal random variable with this mean and variance. ^ The second problem we study is that of the probability that a collection of motifs (of the …

Secure Platforms For Enforcing Contextual Access Control, Aditi Gupta

Open Access Dissertations

Advances in technology and wide scale deployment of networking enabled portable devices such as smartphones has made it possible to provide pervasive access to sensitive data to authorized individuals from any location. While this has certainly made data more accessible, it has also increased the risk of data theft as the data may be accessed from potentially unsafe locations in the presence of untrusted parties. The smartphones come with various embedded sensors that can provide rich contextual information such as sensing the presence of other users in a context. Frequent context profiling can also allow a mobile device to learn …

Quantitative Modeling Of Spatiotemporal Systems: Simulation Of Biological Systems And Analysis Of Error Metric Effects On Model Fitting, James Hengenius

Open Access Dissertations

Understanding the biophysical processes underlying biological and biotechnological processes is a prerequisite for therapeutic treatments and technological innovation. With the exponential growth of computational processing speed, experimental findings in these fields have been complemented by dynamic simulations of developmental signaling and genetic interactions. Models provide means to evaluate "emergent" properties of systems sometimes inaccessible by reductionist approaches, making them test beds for biological inference and technological refinement.^ The complexity and interconnectedness of biological processes pose special challenges to modelers; biological models typically possess a large number of unknown parameters relative to their counterparts in other physical sciences. Estimating these parameter …

In this thesis multiple methods are proposed and applied to the Akamai CIDR time series data. The Akamai network is one of the world's largest distributed-computing platforms, with more than 250,000 servers in more than 80 countries. It is responsible for 15-20 percent of all web traffic. We obtained 110 GB raw CIDR data over a 18 month period, collected on the Akamai network from November 2011 to April 2013. ^ The Seasonal-Trend Decomposition procedure based on loess (STL+) is used to model the CIDR series. Motivated by the CIDR series analysis, we propose a general prediction based model selection …

Towards A Paradigm Shift In The Modeling Of Soil Organic Carbon Decomposition For Earth System Models, Yujie He Oct 2014

Towards A Paradigm Shift In The Modeling Of Soil Organic Carbon Decomposition For Earth System Models, Yujie He

Open Access Dissertations

Soils are the largest terrestrial carbon pools and contain approximately 2200 Pg of carbon. Thus, the dynamics of soil carbon plays an important role in the global carbon cycle and climate system. Earth System Models are used to project future interactions between terrestrial ecosystem carbon dynamics and climate. However, these models often predict a wide range of soil carbon responses and their formulations have lagged behind recent soil science advances, omitting key biogeochemical mechanisms. In contrast, recent mechanistically-based biogeochemical models that explicitly account for microbial biomass pools and enzyme kinetics that catalyze soil carbon decomposition produce notably different results and …

Spatial Marked Point Processes: Models And Inferences, Yen-Ning E Huang Oct 2014

Spatial Marked Point Processes: Models And Inferences, Yen-Ning E Huang

Open Access Dissertations

A spatial marked point process describes the locations of randomly distributed events in a region, with a mark attached to each observed point. Nowadays, the availability of spatiotemporal data is increasing and many spatiotemporal models are studied with applications in a wide range of disciplines. Spatial marked point processes are then extended to spatiotemporal marked point processes if time component is taken into account. In general, the marks can be quantitative or categorical variables. Independence between points and marks is a convenient assumption, but may not be true in practice. Tests for independence between points and marks are proposed previously, …

Development Of Planar Patch Clamp With Potentiometric Calcium Ion-Selective Electrode, Kul Inn Oct 2014

Development Of Planar Patch Clamp With Potentiometric Calcium Ion-Selective Electrode, Kul Inn

Open Access Dissertations

Ion channels are proteins in cell lipid bilayer membranes and act as pores which can adopt closed and open states, thus gating the flow of ions in and out of the cell. Patch clamp technology has been the proven standard for fundamental studies of ion channel activities. However, the technique has some basic limitations: low throughput, time consuming nature of its process, need of highly skilled personnel and inability to identify ionic composition of electrophysiological events. Many different materials and fabrication methods have been introduced to replace traditional patch clamp setup to overcome limitations.^ In this dissertation, a planar patch …

In today's "Instagram" world, with advances in ubiquitous computing and access to social networks, digital media is adopted by art and culture. In this dissertation, we study what makes a good design by investigating mechanisms to bring aesthetics of design from realm of subjection to objection. These mechanisms are a combination of three main approaches: learning theories and principles of design by collaborating with professional designers, mathematically and statistically modeling good designs from large scale datasets, and crowdscourcing to model perceived aesthetics of designs from general public responses. We then apply the knowledge gained in automatic design creation tools to …

Quantum Mechanics In Complex Systems, Ross Douglas Hoehn Oct 2014

Quantum Mechanics In Complex Systems, Ross Douglas Hoehn

Open Access Dissertations

This document should be considered in its separation; there are three distinct topics contained within and three distinct chapters within the body of works. In a similar fashion, this abstract should be considered in three parts. Firstly, we explored the existence of multiply-charged atomic ions by having developed a new set of dimensional scaling equations as well as a series of relativistic augmentations to the standard dimensional scaling procedure and to the self-consistent field calculations. Secondly, we propose a novel method of predicting drug efficacy in hopes to facilitate the discovery of new small molecule therapeutics by modeling the agonist-protein …

Tools For Efficient Design Of Multicomponent Separation Processes, Joshua Lee Huff Oct 2014

Tools For Efficient Design Of Multicomponent Separation Processes, Joshua Lee Huff

Open Access Dissertations

Separations account for as much as 85% of plant operating costs in chemical production; it is therefore important that they be designed with energy efficiency in mind. This can only be achieved if two things are achieved: the complete space of design options is known, and an accurate way is developed to compare all possible design options. For both membrane separation cascades and multicomponent distillation configurations, this dissertation explores methods for designing energy efficient separations.^ The operating cost of membranes used in production of nitrogen gas from air is largely driven by the compressors required to maintain a pressure differential. …

Trustworthy Data From Untrusted Databases, Rohit Jain Oct 2014

Trustworthy Data From Untrusted Databases, Rohit Jain

Open Access Dissertations

Increasingly, data are subjected to environments which can result in invalid (malicious or inadvertent) modifications to the data. For example, when we host the database on a third party server, or when there is a threat of insider attack or hacker attack. Ensuring the trustworthiness of data retrieved from a database is of utmost importance to users. In this dissertation, we address the question of whether a data owner can be assured that the data retrieved from an untrusted server are trustworthy. In particular, we reduce the level of trust necessary in order to establish the trustworthiness of data. Earlier …

Automatic Translation Of Non-Repetitive Openmp To Mpi, Fahed Jubair Oct 2014

Automatic Translation Of Non-Repetitive Openmp To Mpi, Fahed Jubair

Open Access Dissertations

Cluster platforms with distributed-memory architectures are becoming increasingly available low-cost solutions for high performance computing. Delivering a productive programming environment that hides the complexity of clusters and allows writing efficient programs is urgently needed. Despite multiple efforts to provide shared memory abstraction, message-passing (MPI) is still the state-of-the-art programming model for distributed-memory architectures. ^ Writing efficient MPI programs is challenging. In contrast, OpenMP is a shared-memory programming model that is known for its programming productivity. Researchers introduced automatic source-to-source translation schemes from OpenMP to MPI so that programmers can use OpenMP while targeting clusters. Those schemes limited their focus on …

Development Of Novel Strategies To Combat Multidrug Resistance Mediated By Efflux Transporters And Intracellular Bacteria, Jerrin Kuriakose

Open Access Dissertations

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is the condition where cancer cells or microorganisms cease to respond to multiple drugs. MDR conferred by efflux transporters, that deprive the bioavailability of drugs at their site of action, are a threat to cancer and malarial chemotherapy. Specifically, the mammalian ABC transporter Pglycoprotein (P-gp) has undermined many drugs in treatment of cancer and other disease states. Mutations in the parasitic transporter Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter (PfCRT) have given rise to strains unsusceptible to the aminoquionoline family of antimalarials. Using the very drug substrates, we have developed bivalent inhibitors of P-gp. Here, click chemistry has been …

Open Access Dissertations

D&R is a statistical framework for the analysis of large complex data that enables feasible and practical analysis of large complex data. The analyst selects a division method to divide the data into subsets, applies an analytic method of the analysis to each subset independently with no communication among subsets, selects a recombination method that is applied to the outputs across subsets to form a result of the analytic method for the entire data. The computational tasking of D&R is nearly embarrassingly parallel, so D&R can readily exploit distributed, parallel computational environments, such as our D&R computational environment, Tessera.^ In …

Functional Programming Abstractions For Weakly Consistent Systems, Sivaramakrishnan Krishnamoorthy Chandrasekaran Oct 2014

Functional Programming Abstractions For Weakly Consistent Systems, Sivaramakrishnan Krishnamoorthy Chandrasekaran

Open Access Dissertations

In recent years, there has been a wide-spread adoption of both multicore and cloud computing. Traditionally, concurrent programmers have relied on the underlying system providing strong memory consistency, where there is a semblance of concurrent tasks operating over a shared global address space. However, providing scalable strong consistency guarantees as the scale of the system grows is an increasingly difficult endeavor. In a multicore setting, the increasing complexity and the lack of scalability of hardware mechanisms such as cache coherence deters scalable strong consistency. In geo-distributed compute clouds, the availability concerns in the presence of partial failures prohibit strong consistency. …

Paraphrasing the theory of embodied cognition, all aspects of our cognition are determined primarily by the contextual information and the means of physical interaction with data and information. In hybrid human-machine systems involving complex decision making, continuously maintaining a high level of attention while employing a deep understanding concerning the task performed as well as its context are essential. Utilizing embodied interaction to interact with machines has the potential to promote thinking and learning according to the theory of embodied cognition proposed by Lakoff. Additionally, the hybrid human-machine system utilizing natural and intuitive communication channels (e.g., gestures, speech, and body …

Theory For Diffusional Encounters In Heterogeneous Environments And Multivalent Electrolyte Screening Of Charged Interface, Ran Li Oct 2014

Theory For Diffusional Encounters In Heterogeneous Environments And Multivalent Electrolyte Screening Of Charged Interface, Ran Li

Open Access Dissertations

We develop a theory for encounter rates in a three-dimensional system of connected compartments. The model of connected compartments exhibits the length-scale dependent diffusion that is observed in many heterogeneous environments, such as porous catalysts and biological environments. We discovered a dimensionless number that is the dominant scaling variable and obtained, for the first time, an analytical expression for the encounter rate. The new theory generalizes the classic Smoluchowski diffusion limit to the case of heterogeneous environments. The new theory is tested using Brownian dynamics simulations.^ We also experimentally investigated the behavior of multivalent electrolyte near a charged solid-liquid interface. …
