Resistance And Lifetime Measurements Of Polymer Solar Cells Using Glycerol Doped Poly[3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene]: Poly[Styrenesulfonate] Hole Injection Layers, Bhaskar Mantha, Emma Lewis, Richard P. Barber Jr. Oct 2014

Resistance And Lifetime Measurements Of Polymer Solar Cells Using Glycerol Doped Poly[3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene]: Poly[Styrenesulfonate] Hole Injection Layers, Bhaskar Mantha, Emma Lewis, Richard P. Barber Jr.

Physics

We have performed resistivity measurements of poly[3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene]: poly[styrenesulfonate] (PEDOT:PSS) films with varying concentrations of glycerol. Resistivity is seen to decrease exponentially from roughly 3 Ω-cm for pure PEDOT:PSS to 3 × 10-2Ω-cm for 35 mg/cm3 glycerol in PEDOT:PSS. Beyond this concentration adding glycerol does not significantly change resistivity. Bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells using these variously doped PEDOT:PSS layers as electrodes were studied to characterize the effects on efficiency and lifetime. Although our data display significant scatter, lowering the resistance of the PEDOT:PSS layers results in lower device resistance and higher efficiency as expected. We also note that the lifetime …

Publications and Research

Climate change is impacting agro-ecosystems, crops, and farmer livelihoods in communities worldwide. While it is well understood that more frequent and intense climate events in many areas are resulting in a decline in crop yields, the impact on crop quality is less acknowledged, yet it is critical for food systems that benefit both farmers and consumers through high-quality products. This study examines tea (Camellia sinensis; Theaceae), the world’s most widely consumed beverage after water, as a study system to measure effects of seasonal precipitation variability on crop functional quality and associated farmer knowledge, preferences, and livelihoods. Sampling was conducted in …

Efficient And Secure Code Dissemination In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria Oct 2014

Efficient And Secure Code Dissemination In Sensor Clouds, Vimal Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present an efficient and secure code dissemination technique aimed at sensor clouds. Previous code dissemination techniques were geared toward traditional wireless sensor networks. They did not take into account, the dynamic nature of a sensor cloud, where the applications running on the motes may not just be updated but changed completely in successive code disseminations. The technique presented in this paper is based upon the observation that a large amount of code is common between applications in wireless sensor networks. Our technique first discovers the code common across various wireless sensor applications. It then distributes this …

E-Vet: Economic Reward/Penalty-Based System For Vehicular Traffic Management, Nilesh Padhariya, Ouri Wolfson, Anirban Mondal, Varun Gandhi, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose the E-VeT system for efficient vehicular traffic management in road networks using economy-based reward/penalty schemes. In E-VeT, base stations collaboratively facilitate dynamic vehicular route assignments for reducing the traffic congestion, average time of arrival and fuel consumption. The main contributions of this work are two-fold. First, it proposes an R2A (Revenue-based Route Allocation) scheme, which rewards vehicles for following system-assigned longer-time paths, and charges a fee for following system-assigned shorter-time paths. Furthermore, it penalizes vehicles for any deviations from the system-assigned paths. Second, it discusses a route allocation algorithm, which gives lesser-time paths as a preference to vehicles …

Supervised Material Classification In Oblique Aerial Imagery Using Gabor Filter Features, Michael L. Harris Oct 2014

Supervised Material Classification In Oblique Aerial Imagery Using Gabor Filter Features, Michael L. Harris

Theses

RIT's Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) tool allows modeling of real world scenes to create synthetic imagery for sensor design and analysis, trade studies, algorithm validation, and training image analysts. To increase model construction speed, and the diversity and size of synthetic scenes which can be generated it is desirable to automatically segment real world imagery into different material types and import a material classmap into DIRSIG.

This work contributes a methodology based on standard texture recognition techniques to supervised classification of material types in oblique aerial imagery. Oblique imagery provides many challenges for texture recognition due …

This project identifies metrics for measuring the benefit of rail infrastructure projects for key stakeholders. It is important that stakeholders with an interest in community economic development play an active role in the development of the rail network. Economic development activities in both rural and urban settings are essential if a nation is to realize growth and prosperity. Many communities have developed goals and visions to establish an economic development program, but they often fail to achieve their goals due to uncertainties during the project selection and planning process. Communities often select a project from a vast pool of ideas …

Mega, Digital Storage Lockers, And The Dmca: Will Innovation Be Stifled By Fears Of Piracy?, Ali V. Mirsaidi

Duke Law & Technology Review

Kim Dotcom, founder of Megaupload Limited, has been in many news headlines over the past year. Megaupload—one of Dotcom’s many peer-to-peer sharing sites—was the center of controversy, as it allowed users to upload and share all sorts of files, including copyrighted material. After an organized effort by the Department of Justice and several foreign governments, Dotcom was arrested for (secondary) copyright infringement and his site was ultimately shut down. Dotcom has recently launched a new service, MEGA, which he claims will evade copyright laws entirely. Like other well-known cloud-sharing services such as Dropbox and Google Drive, MEGA allows users to …

Triangular Treaties: The Nature And Limits Of Investment Treaty Rights, Anthea Roberts Prof Oct 2014

Triangular Treaties: The Nature And Limits Of Investment Treaty Rights, Anthea Roberts Prof

Harvard International Law Journal

Investment treaties are triangular treaties. Investment treaties are entered into by two states but they are unusual because they provide enforceable protections to investors as third party beneficiaries. State A (the host state) agrees to provide certain protections to investors coming from State B (the home state). If the investor considers that these protections have been violated, investment treaties also grant the investor permission to bring an arbitral claim directly against the host state.

Investment treaties clearly protect investors against certain unilateral actions by host states, such as expropriation without compensation. But do they also protect investors against unilateral actions …

Volume Loss From Lower Peyto Glacier, Alberta, Canada, Between 1966 And 2010, Laura M. Kehrl, Robert L. Hawley, Erich C. Osterberg, Dominic A. Winski, Dominic A. Winski, Alexander P. Lee

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mass loss from mountain glaciers contributes to sea-level rise and reduces freshwater availability in glacier-fed river basins, with negative effects on hydropower generation, agriculture and the health of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we determine the volume of lower Peyto Glacier, Alberta, Canada, from ground-penetrating radar surveys in 2008–10, and compare our volume estimate with previous estimates from 1966 and 1984. The long-term record of mass-balance estimates on Peyto Glacier highlights Peyto’s importance as an ‘index’ glacier for the region. We calculate a mean volume of (3.39 0.30) 10m for the glacier snout for the period 2008–10. Glacier volume decreased …

Comminution Of Solids Due To Kinetic Energy Of High-Rate Shearing: Impact, Shock, And Shale Fracturing, Zdenek P Bazant, Yewang Su, Marco Salviato, Ferhun Caner

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Keynote: Fragmentation, crushing, and pulverization of solids, briefly called comminution, has long been a problem of interest for mining, tunneling, explosions, meteorite impact, missile impact and penetration, groundshock, defence against terrorist attack, and various kinds of industrial processes. Particularly intriguing is the idea that shock waves generated in the borehole by electrohydraulic pulsed arc could comminute gas shale so as to achieve a sufficient increase of permeability, which might allow reducing the discharge of contaminated water needed for hydraulic fracturing. Although many semi-empirical models for impact analysis abound in the literature, and whereas the fragmentation in the so-called “Mescall” zones …

Multiphase Elastic Homogenization, And The Mechanics Of Tendon-To-Bone Attachment, Guy Genin, F. Salimeh Saadat, Stavros Thomopoulos, Victor Birman

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Estimates of the effective stiffness of a composite containing multiple types of inclusions are needed for the design and study of functionally graded systems in engineering and biologic materials. One important stiffening mechanism in biologic systems is the accumulation of a high volume fraction of mineral inclusions within and upon collagen fibers. Modeling of this mechanism is critical for understanding how stresses are transmitted from tendon to bone and for designing improvements to surgical procedures for reattaching tendon to bone. The latter is a critical need because failure rates following surgical reattachment are as high as 94% in some populations. …

On Assessing Accuracy Of Numerical Solutions Of Porous Media Models, Mohammad Shabouei Oct 2014

On Assessing Accuracy Of Numerical Solutions Of Porous Media Models, Mohammad Shabouei

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Error estimation techniques [1, 2] are widely used as the solution verification in the numerical simulations. One can employ either a posteriori error estimation based on known quantities in the solution or a priori error estimation by controlling the error parameters in unknown quantities. This study proposes a posteriori criteria for finite element approximation of the problems in flow through porous media. We introduce a technique to verify the numerical solution of Darcy and Darcy–Brinkman models and their modifications. We show that for given boundary conditions of all kinematically admissible vector fields, the Darcy and the Darcy–Brinkman velocities have minimum …

Stability Of Active Muscle Tissue, Luis Dorfmann, Chris Paetsch Oct 2014

Stability Of Active Muscle Tissue, Luis Dorfmann, Chris Paetsch

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

In this discussion, the notion of material stability is examined in the context of active muscle tissue modeling, where the nonlinear constitutive law is dependent on both the physiologically-driven muscle contraction and the finite mechanical deformation. First, the governing equations and constitutive laws for a general active-elastic material are linearized about a homogeneous underlying configuration. In order to obtain mathematical restrictions analogous to those found in elastic materials, stability conditions are derived based on the propagation of homogeneous plane waves with real wave speeds, and the generalized acoustic tensor is obtained. Focusing on 2D motions, and considering a simplified, decoupled …

Transforming Small Localized Loading Into Large Rotational Motion In Soft Anisotropically-Structured Materials, Stephan Rudykh, Mary Boyce Oct 2014

Transforming Small Localized Loading Into Large Rotational Motion In Soft Anisotropically-Structured Materials, Stephan Rudykh, Mary Boyce

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Actuation of rotational motion in machines and robotics is generally achieved through highly engineered mechanical or electromechanical devices. As the field of soft robotics develops, there is an emerging and expanding need for novel actuation mechanisms. Here, we show the ability to transform small localized loading into large rotational motion via the design of soft anisotropically structured composite materials. The transformation mechanism governing the rotational actuation capitalizes on the underlying coupling of shear and normal modes of stress and strain in anisotropic materials together with the ability of the soft material to locally undergo large deformation [1, 2]. The transformation …

An Eulerian Framework For Modeling And Simulating The Nonlinear Dynamics Of Soft Hyperelastic Materials, Robert Lowe Oct 2014

An Eulerian Framework For Modeling And Simulating The Nonlinear Dynamics Of Soft Hyperelastic Materials, Robert Lowe

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

In this discussion, we present a novel framework for modeling and simulating the nonlinear elastodynamics of soft hyperelastic materials such as rubbers, elastomers, and biological tissues. The proposed framework differs fundamentally from the standard paradigm in computational mechanics in concept, structure, and methodology. A key feature of our approach is the use of a fixed mesh in tandem with a novel shock-capturing scheme from computational fluid dynamics designed specifically for first-order hyperbolic systems. Our use of a fixed mesh demands an Eulerian formulation of the mathematical model. The mathematical model we employ bridges the Eulerian conservation laws of mass, linear …

Application Of Finite Element Modeling And Viscoelasticity Theory In Characterization And Prediction Of Dielectric Relaxation Process In Polymer Nanodielectrics, He Zhao, Yang Li, Xiaolin Li, L. Catherine Brinson, Yanhui Huang, Timothy M. Krentz, Ke Wu, Curt Breneman, Linda Schadler

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Nanodielectrics, typically defined as polymer composites with nanosized ceramic fillers, have demonstrated significant improvements in electrical endurance, breakdown strength and dielectric constant relative to their constituent materials, which leads to enhanced energy storage capabilities. The key role played by the large interfacial area surrounding nanofillers proves to be essential to the enhancement, yet quantitative models to predict the altered dielectric properties in the interfacial area are rarely seen. In this presentation, we apply a finite element modeling approach, originally developed for viscoelasticity analysis, to predict the frequency and temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity spectra in polymer nanodielectrics containing functionalized silica …

Predicting The Degradation Rate As A Function Of Drug Load In Solid-State Drug Products, Steven Baertschi, Allison Dill, David Sperry, Timothy Kramer Oct 2014

Predicting The Degradation Rate As A Function Of Drug Load In Solid-State Drug Products, Steven Baertschi, Allison Dill, David Sperry, Timothy Kramer

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

A model for predicting the rate of degradation as a function of drug load was recently developed (J. Pharm. Sci., 101(11), 2012, 4170‑4177). In this case study, we explore both the mathematical model as well as the conceptual construct from which the model was developed. We applied the model to a formulated product of varying drug loads. Our results not only confirm the validity of the mathematical model, but also call into question the proposed conceptual construct. We will discuss the generality of the model and how the use of this model can speed development of lower dose drug formulations …

Modeling Structure Property Relationships Using Finite Elements And High Energy X-Rays, Matthew Miller Oct 2014

Modeling Structure Property Relationships Using Finite Elements And High Energy X-Rays, Matthew Miller

Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive

Mechanical design with structural materials has been well-served by traditional methods for linking microstructure to mechanical properties using image-based data and mechanical testing. Modern “micrographs” might include three-dimensional microstructural models with spatially resolved orientation and/or chemical composition. Regardless of the level of detail, however, image-based data contain no information regarding the mechanical response of the aggregate. Often the connections between the microstructure and resulting mechanical properties are derived by intuition and inference. This highly empirical process is one of the reasons that materials design and selection are such time and resource-intensive process. The creation of mathematical models of the microstructure …
