Constraints On Very High Energy Emission From Grb 130427a, P. T. Reynolds, Et Al Oct 2014

Constraints On Very High Energy Emission From Grb 130427a, P. T. Reynolds, Et Al

Physical Sciences Publications

Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z = 0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB 130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope for ~70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that …

On The Dynamics Of The Adenylate Energy System: Homeorhesis Vs Homeostasis, La De, Im Fuente, Jm Cortés, E Valero, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Biochemical energy is the fundamental element that maintains both the adequate turnover of the biomolecular structures and the functional metabolic viability of unicellular organisms. The levels of ATP, ADP and AMP reflect roughly the energetic status of the cell, and a precise ratio relating them was proposed by Atkinson as the adenylate energy charge (AEC). Under growth-phase conditions, cells maintain the AEC within narrow physiological values, despite extremely large fluctuations in the adenine nucleotides concentration. Intensive experimental studies have shown that these AEC values are preserved in a wide variety of organisms, both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Here, to understand some …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The radio millisecond pulsar J1713+0747 is regarded as one of the highest-precision clocks in the sky and is regularly timed for the purpose of detecting gravitational waves. The International Pulsar Timing Array Collaboration undertook a 24 hr global observation of PSR J1713+0747 in an effort to better quantify sources of timing noise in this pulsar, particularly on intermediate (1.24 hr) timescales. We observed the pulsar continuously over 24 hr with the Arecibo, Effelsberg, GMRT, Green Bank, LOFAR, Lovell, Nancay, Parkes, and WSRT radio telescopes. The combined pulse times-of-arrival presented here provide an estimate of what sources of timing noise, excluding …

Fear, Estrangement And The Sublime Moment In Hugo Santiago’S Invasión (Argentina, 1969)., Yvonne F. Cornejo Oct 2014

Fear, Estrangement And The Sublime Moment In Hugo Santiago’S Invasión (Argentina, 1969)., Yvonne F. Cornejo

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

This paper examines how the sublime aesthetic combines with science fiction tropes to articulate estrangement and dislocation in Hugo Santiago’s film Invasión (Argentina, 1969). The dystopian tones, alienating landscape and unstoppable invaders featured in the film resonate with Burke’s negative sublime, while a Kantian approach to Invasión provides grounds for discussion of the film’s cognitive effect on the viewer. A close examination of the cinematic text reveals the manner in which its dystopian tropes cross over into the horror genre to comment on politics and history, while also highlighting the limits of representation.

The Efficiency Of Automated Theorem Proving By Translation To Less Expressive Logics, Negin Arhami Oct 2014

The Efficiency Of Automated Theorem Proving By Translation To Less Expressive Logics, Negin Arhami

Open Access Theses

Many Automated Theorem Prover (ATP) systems for different logical forms, and translators for translating different logical forms from one to another, have been developed and are now available. Some logical forms are more expressive than others, and it is easier to express problems in those forms. On the other hand, the ATP systems for less expressive forms have been tested for many years, and are more powerful and reliable. There is a trade-off between expressivity of a logical form, and power and reliability of the available ATP systems. Different ATP systems and translators can be combined to solve a problem …

Microbial Water Quality During The Northern Migration Of Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis) At The Central Platte River, Nebraska, Matthew T. Moser Oct 2014

Microbial Water Quality During The Northern Migration Of Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis) At The Central Platte River, Nebraska, Matthew T. Moser

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

The central Platte River is an important resource in Nebraska. Its water flows among multiple channels and supports numerous beneficial uses such as drinking water, irrigation for agriculture, groundwater recharge, and recreational activities. The central Platte River valley is an important stopover for migratory waterfowl and cranes, such as the Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) and Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis), in their annual northward traversal of the Central Flyway. Waterfowl, cranes, and other migratory birds moving across international and intercontinental borders may provide long-range transportation for any microbial pathogen they harbor, particularly through the spread of feces. …

Particle Dispersion In Homogeneous Turbulence Using The One-Dimensional Turbulence Model, Guangyuan Sun, David O. Lignell, John C. Hewson, Craig R. Gin Oct 2014

Particle Dispersion In Homogeneous Turbulence Using The One-Dimensional Turbulence Model, Guangyuan Sun, David O. Lignell, John C. Hewson, Craig R. Gin

Faculty Publications

Lagrangian particle dispersion is studied using the one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model in homogeneous decaying turbulence configurations. The ODT model has been widely and successfully applied to a number of reacting and nonreacting flow configurations, but only limited application has been made to multiphase flows. Here, we present a version of the particle implementation and interaction with the stochastic and instantaneous ODT eddy events. The model is characterized by comparison to experimental data of particle dispersion for a range of intrinsic particle time scales and body forces. Particle dispersion, velocity, and integral time scale results are presented. The particle implementation introduces …

The Antisymmetry Betweenness Axiom And Hausdorff Continua, Paul Bankston Oct 2014

The Antisymmetry Betweenness Axiom And Hausdorff Continua, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

An interpretation of betweenness on a set satisfies the antisymmetry axiom at a point a if it is impossible for each of two distinct points to lie between the other and a. In this paper we study the role of antisymmetry as it applies to the K-interpretation of betweenness in a Hausdorff continuum X, where a point c lies between points a and b exactly when every subcontinuum of X containing both a and b contains c as well.

Successful Mdr-Tb Treatment Regimens Including Amikacin Are Associated With High Rates Of Hearing Loss, Chawangwa Modongo, Rafal S. Sobota, Boikobo Kesenogile, Ronald Ncube

Dartmouth Scholarship

Aminoglycosides are a critical component of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment but data on their efficacy and adverse effects in Botswana is scarce. We determined the effect of amikacin on treatment outcomes and development of hearing loss in MDR-TB patients. Patients started on MDR-TB treatment between 2006 and 2012 were included. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the effect of amikacin on treatment outcomes and development of hearing loss.

Networked Employment Discrimination, Tamara Kneese Oct 2014

Networked Employment Discrimination, Tamara Kneese

Media Studies

Employers often struggle to assess qualified applicants, particularly in contexts where they receive hundreds of applications for job openings. In an effort to increase efficiency and improve the process, many have begun employing new tools to sift through these applications, looking for signals that a candidate is “the best fit.” Some companies use tools that offer algorithmic assessments of workforce data to identify the variables that lead to stronger employee performance, or to high employee attrition rates, while others turn to third party ranking services to identify the top applicants in a labor pool. Still others eschew automated systems, but …

Use Of Grooved Microchannels To Improve The Performance Of Membrane-Less Fuel Cells, J. D'Alessandro, Petru S. Fodor Oct 2014

Use Of Grooved Microchannels To Improve The Performance Of Membrane-Less Fuel Cells, J. D'Alessandro, Petru S. Fodor

Physics Faculty Publications

In this work, the fluid dynamics within a membrane-less microchannel fuel cell is analyzed computationally. The membrane-less design is a result of the laminar nature of the fluid flow at small Reynolds numbers, restricting the fuel and oxidant to the vicinity of the corresponding electrodes, without the need of a proton exchange membrane (PEM). However, the performance of such cells is limited by the slow diffusive mass transport near the electrodes, with a large fraction of the reactants leaving the channel without coming in contact with the catalytic surfaces, and thus not being used. We mitigate this problem through the …
