The addition of O2 to gas mixtures in time projection chambers containing CS2 has recently been shown to produce multiple negative ions that travel at slightly different velocities. This allows a measurement of the absolute position of ionising events in the z (drift) direction. In this work, we apply the z-fiducialisation technique to a directional dark matter search. In particular, we present results from a 46.3 live-day source-free exposure of the DRIFT-IId detector run in this completely new mode. With full-volume fiducialisation, we have achieved the first background-free operation of a directional detector. The resulting exclusion curve for spin-dependent WIMP-proton …

Timed/Saber Satellite Investigations Of Mesospheric Gravity Wave Variances Over The Andes, Jonathan Pugmire, Michael J. Taylor, Yucheng Zhao, Dominique Pautet, James Russell

Graduate Student Presentations

Focusing on data from the SABER instrument aboard the TIMED satellite temperature variances are determined as a function of altitude to quantify small scale gravity waves. This was done using IDL software to extract all the temperature profile measurements that were measured by SABER within a limited geographical area, centered on our ground-based optical imager at Cerro Pachon, Chile (30.3°S, 70.7°S). Then large-scale tidal waves, with wavenumbers 0-6, were removed from each profile revealing the gravity wave perturbations. The temperature variance were computed and recorded at several altitudes. Temperature variances reveal possible increased activity due to mountain waves. Mountain waves …

Determining The Difference Between Nebraska Administrators’ And Nebraska Secondary English Teachers’ Perception Of The Teacher Evaluation, Michael Scott Musil

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to determine the difference between Nebraska administrators’ and Nebraska secondary English teachers’ perceptions of the teacher evaluation. The study explored teacher and administrator perceptions of the teacher-evaluation process as it relates to Nebraska secondary English teachers. Teachers and administrators from across the state of Nebraska had equal opportunity to participate in this study.

Both groups of teachers and administrators responded by Likert scale to 42 online statements arranged by theme about their experiences regarding the teacher-evaluation process. Participants aggregated themselves by geography, school size, gender, experience, and socioeconomic status of students. Quantitative data was …

Age And Gender Recognition For Speech Applications Based On Support Vector Machines, Hasan Erokyar Oct 2014

Age And Gender Recognition For Speech Applications Based On Support Vector Machines, Hasan Erokyar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Automatic age and gender recognition for speech applications is very important for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is that it can improve human-machine interaction. For example, the advertisements can be specialized based on the age and the gender of the person on the phone. It also can help identify suspects in criminal cases or at least it can minimize the number of suspects. Some other uses of this system can be applied for adaptation of waiting queue music where a different type of music can be played according to the person's age and gender. And also using …

A Decision Support Model For Personalized Cancer Treatment, Florentino Antonio Rico-Fontalvo Oct 2014

A Decision Support Model For Personalized Cancer Treatment, Florentino Antonio Rico-Fontalvo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work is motivated by the need of providing patients with a decision support system that facilitates the selection of the most appropriate treatment strategy in cancer treatment. Treatment options are currently subject to predetermined clinical pathways and medical expertise, but generally, do not consider the individual patient characteristics or preferences. Although genomic patient data are available, this information is rarely used in the clinical setting for real-life patient care. In the area of personalized medicine, the advancement in the fundamental understanding of cancer biology and clinical oncology can promote the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer diseases.

The objectives …

An Ex Ante Approach To Excessive State Debt, Vincent S. J. Buccola Oct 2014

An Ex Ante Approach To Excessive State Debt, Vincent S. J. Buccola

Duke Law Journal

The recent recession has shone a very public spotlight on the perilous financial conditions of many American states. At the same time, it has renewed academic interest in the question of excessive state debt—its causes and possible cures. Scholars who see risk externalization as a primary driver of systematic overborrowing have proposed bankruptcy legislation for the states as one solution. Such advocates argue that a formal debt-adjustment mechanism could reduce the appeal of federal bailouts and thereby curtail the moral hazard leading to excessive debt. But given the states' unilateral power to set the terms of default, it is hard …

Testing For Measurement Invariance And Latent Mean Differences Across Methods: Interesting Incremental Information From Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Christian Geiser, G. Leonard Burns, Mateu Servera Oct 2014

Testing For Measurement Invariance And Latent Mean Differences Across Methods: Interesting Incremental Information From Multitrait-Multimethod Studies, Christian Geiser, G. Leonard Burns, Mateu Servera

Psychology Faculty Publications

Models of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) are frequently applied to examine the convergent validity of scores obtained from multiple raters or methods in so-called multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) investigations. We show that interesting incremental information about method effects can be gained from including mean structures and tests of MI across methods in MTMM models. We present a modeling framework for testing MI in the first step of a CFA-MTMM analysis. We also discuss the relevance of MI in the context of four more complex CFA-MTMM models with method factors. We focus on three recently developed multiple-indicator CFA-MTMM models for structurally different methods …

Social Media & College Admissions: An Analysis Of Facebook's Role In College Admissions & Higher Education Marketing, Michael Dooney Oct 2014

Social Media & College Admissions: An Analysis Of Facebook's Role In College Admissions & Higher Education Marketing, Michael Dooney

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

College admissions offices have developed and evolved to include increasingly sophisticated mechanisms for recruiting classes sufficient for meeting the financial needs of their respective institutions, and social media has rapidly become a popular tool for admissions offices in their efforts to meet enrollment goals. However, while social media is now used by practically every admissions office in the United States, little research exists that examines how universities use social media in this context. This qualitative study examines the use of a private Facebook group at a private university and incorporates observational study of the Facebook group and interviews with administrators. …

Magnetometer Surveys: Attempts And Issues In Locating A 1948 Private Water Well On The Shore Of Lac Sault Dore, Price County, Wisconsin, Kenneth R. Neuhauser, Kristopher J. Neuhauser

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

Two different magnetometer surveys in northern Wisconsin during the summers of 1997 and 2010, using two different Geometrics magnetometers, a proton precession G-816 unit and a cesium vapor G-858 unit, in an attempt to locate a surface-target position of, and depth to, an abandoned 1948 private water well, successfully targeted the suspect surface position and the depth to the well head spike. Both surveys detected 400-gamma anomalies and estimated the depth to the spike at 2 meters. A land owner, private family photograph taken in 1951, was used to compare the anomaly’s position to the actual surface position of the …

Faculty Author Rights Workshop: Strategies For Retaining Your (Copy)Rights, Char Booth, M. Sara Lowe, Allegra Swift

Open Access Week @ The Claremont Colleges

The publication process can feel like a one-sided negotiation, with journal and book publishers holding the power to dictate restrictive terms of use and reuse. Thanks to a growing number of strategies and tools, this is no longer necessarily the case.

By empowering attendees with insight into author addenda and open access (OA) repositories, this hands-on interactive session will explore how researchers and authors can advocate for themselves in their relationship with their publishers.

You will leave this workshop with a skillset that can help you retain copyright and maximize your scholarly impact.

The Relationship Between Bilingualism And Executive Functioning In Spanish- And English-Speaking Head Start Preschoolers, Lisa J. White

Open Access Theses

Executive functions (EF) are an important aspect of school readiness that have been shown to predict higher achievement in language, math, and science starting in the early years (Blair & Razza, 2007; Bull, Espy, & Wiebe, 2008; Nayfeld, Fuccillo, & Greenfield, 2013; Ponitz, McClelland, Matthews, & Morrison, 2009). Children who are bilingual have been shown to have enhanced EF skills when compared to their monolingual peers (Bialystok & Viswanathan, 2009; Carlson & Meltzoff, 2008; Poulin-Dubois, Blaye, Coutya, & Bialystok, 2011; Riggs, Shin, Unber, Spruijt-Metz, Pentz, 2013). While this association has been found among children of different ages, languages, and socioeconomic …
