Emergence Of Algal Blooms: The Effects Of Short-Term Variability In Water Quality On Phytoplankton Abundance, Diversity, And Community Composition In A Tidal Estuary, Todd A. Egerton, Ryan E. Morse, Harold G. Marshall, Margaret R. Mulholland
OES Faculty Publications
Algal blooms are dynamic phenomena, often attributed to environmental parameters that vary on short timescales (e.g., hours to days). Phytoplankton monitoring programs are largely designed to examine long-term trends and interannual variability. In order to better understand and evaluate the relationships between water quality variables and the genesis of algal blooms, daily samples were collected over a 34 day period in the eutrophic Lafayette River, a tidal tributary within Chesapeake Bay's estuarine complex, during spring 2006. During this period two distinct algal blooms occurred; the first was a cryptomonad bloom and this was followed by a bloom of the mixotrophic …

Dispersive And Dissipative Errors In The Dpg Method With Scaled Norms For Helmholtz Equation, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Ignacio Muga, Nicole Olivares
Dispersive And Dissipative Errors In The Dpg Method With Scaled Norms For Helmholtz Equation, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Ignacio Muga, Nicole Olivares
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper studies the discontinuous Petrov--Galerkin (DPG) method, where the test space is normed by a modified graph norm. The modification scales one of the terms in the graph norm by an arbitrary positive scaling parameter. The main finding is that as the parameter approaches zero, better results are obtained, under some circumstances, when the method is applied to the Helmholtz equation. The main tool used is a dispersion analysis on the multiple interacting stencils that form the DPG method. The analysis shows that the discrete wavenumbers of the method are complex, explaining the numerically observed artificial dissipation in the …
A Posteriori Estimates Using Auxiliary Subspace Techniques, Harri Hakula, Michael Neilan, Jeffrey S. Ovall
A Posteriori Estimates Using Auxiliary Subspace Techniques, Harri Hakula, Michael Neilan, Jeffrey S. Ovall
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
A posteriori error estimators based on auxiliary subspace techniques for second order elliptic problems in Rd (d ≥ 2) are considered. In this approach, the solution of a global problem is utilized as the error estimator. As the continuity and coercivity of the problem trivially leads to an efficiency bound, the main focus of this paper is to derive an analogous effectivity bound and to determine the computational complexity of the auxiliary approximation problem. With a carefully chosen auxiliary subspace, we prove that the error is bounded above by the error estimate up to oscillation terms. In addition, we show …
British Cultural Narrative In Winston Churchill's Political Communication, Andres L. Faza
British Cultural Narrative In Winston Churchill's Political Communication, Andres L. Faza
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study uses Winston Churchill's "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" speech, delivered to the House of Commons following the evacuation of Dunkirk, France in June 1940, as a source text by which to examine Churchill's use of British cultural narratives in political communication. Narrative and heuristic theories are proposed as means by which listeners process such messages. A number of rhetorical devices are defined, in order to inform a discussion of the narratives identified, particularly the means by which those narratives were rhetorically embedded in the text. After a careful examination of the source text, the narratives of knighthood …
Audio-Based Visualization Of Expressive Body Movements In Music Performance: An Evaluation Of Methodology In Three Electroacoustic Compositions, Yeamin Oh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
An increase in collaboration amongst visual artists, performance artists, musicians, and programmers has given rise to the exploration of multimedia performance arts. A methodology for audio-based visualization has been created that integrates the information of sound with the visualization of physical expressions, with the goal of magnifying the expressiveness of the performance. The emphasis is placed on exalting the music by using the audio to affect and enhance the video processing, while the video does not affect the audio at all. In this sense the music is considered to be autonomous of the video. The audio-based visualization can provide the …
Travel Time Reliability And Level Of Service, Marlene Beverley Russell
Travel Time Reliability And Level Of Service, Marlene Beverley Russell
LSU Master's Theses
Travel time reliability (TTR) is familiar to travelers, and its indices are useful measures of the quality of a freeway’s service. Technical groups such as highway agencies are more familiar with a freeway’s level of service (LOS), but the LOS does not capture the variability in travel time. Similar to Pu (2011) this thesis introduces a modified buffer index (BI) incorporating a median rather than average travel time as a new travel time reliability measure. Current research by the SHRP 2 L08 Project Team defines freeway reliability LOS by determining equivalent travel time index for similar travel speed ranges shown …
Restraint Moments Due To Thermal Gradients In Continuous Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridges, Sushovan Ghimire
Restraint Moments Due To Thermal Gradients In Continuous Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridges, Sushovan Ghimire
LSU Master's Theses
This research is motivated by the need to develop new bridges, using new materials and construction details to achieve the goal of building longer span bridges that are safe and durable. The study of precast/prestressed concrete bridges made continuous started early in the 1960’s. Continuous bridges have many advantages compared to simple span bridges such as reduction in structural depth, riding comfort and reserve load capacity under overload conditions. They also eliminate joints that require a lot of maintenance and cause deterioration in some cases. The design and construction of continuous bridges requires the consideration of many factors that are …
The Contribution Of Fly Ash Components To Pcdd/F Formation, Phillip M. Potter
The Contribution Of Fly Ash Components To Pcdd/F Formation, Phillip M. Potter
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Chlorinated aromatics undergo surface-mediated reactions with metal oxides to form environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) which can further react to produce polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Previous work using laboratory-made fly ash surrogates composed of transition metal oxides deposited on silica powder has confirmed their ability to mimic fly ash in the production of PCDD/Fs. However, little is known about the propensity of alumina and aluminosilicates to form PCDD/Fs. Cooperative catalysis between transition metals in the formation of PCDD/Fs has also seen little research. A fly ash sample containing both alumina and mullite, an aluminosilicate, was tested for PCDD/F formation …

Advanced And Novel Modeling Techniques For Simulation, Optimization And Monitoring Chemical Engineering Tasks With Refinery And Petrochemical Unit Applications, Gregory M. Robertson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Engineers predict, optimize, and monitor processes to improve safety and profitability. Models automate these tasks and determine precise solutions. This research studies and applies advanced and novel modeling techniques to automate and aid engineering decision-making. Advancements in computational ability have improved modeling software’s ability to mimic industrial problems. Simulations are increasingly used to explore new operating regimes and design new processes. In this work, we present a methodology for creating structured mathematical models, useful tips to simplify models, and a novel repair method to improve convergence by populating quality initial conditions for the simulation’s solver. A crude oil refinery application …

Disparities In Accessibility To Pharmacies: A Case Study In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, Samina Zahid Ikram
Disparities In Accessibility To Pharmacies: A Case Study In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, Samina Zahid Ikram
LSU Master's Theses
Accessibility is a term used to define the relative ease by which activities or services, such as work, recreation, shopping, education or healthcare, can be accessed from a given location. It is an important locational amenity for residents. This study examines accessibility to over 100 pharmacies in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 2010. Accessibility to a pharmacy is critical for a community as it is the prime source to get medication and other health services. First, two Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based methods, namely the proximal area method and the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method, are used to measure the …
Sediment Patterns In Relation To Vegetative Community Shifts At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Karen Doerr Latuso
Sediment Patterns In Relation To Vegetative Community Shifts At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Karen Doerr Latuso
LSU Master's Theses
The processes that control species composition and structure in wetland ecosystems are complex and controlled by many factors including seasonality, depth and duration of flooding, and nutrient dynamics. Catahoula Lake is a floodplain lake that has existed with seasonally fluctuating water levels for at least 4,000 years. The herbaceous vegetation that attracts these waterfowl is slowly being outcompeted by woody vegetation, most notably water-elm (Planera aquatica). Our general goal is to understand the processes that cause this shift, focusing on the role of sediments. Our first objective was to use historical aerial imagery to detect historical changes in plant communities …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Geometry And Kinematics Of The Bangong-Nujiang Suture At The Basu Metamorphic Massif, Se Tibet, Chase Michael Billeaudeau
LSU Master's Theses
There are many uncertainties associated with the development and deformation of the Tibetan Plateau. The Basu Massif, located along the eastern Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone, is an ideal locality to help provide constraints to resolve the geologic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau. The Basu Massif is characterized by high pressure-ultra high pressure (HP-UHP) metamorphic rocks, syn- and post-collisional granites, and a central Upper Paleozoic unit bounded by discontinuous belts of serpentinite. Field data suggests that the carbonates of the central Upper Paleozoic unit, serpentinites, granites and metasedimentary rocks are part of an isoclinally folded shear zone that may have been thrust …

The study was conducted at a high school near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Both groups consisted of 1 section of honors physics and 1 section of regular physics each. Conceptual understanding and problems solving gains were measured using pre/post Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and the Mechanics Baseline Test (MBT) results, respectively. Students’ level of science reasoning was also measured at the beginning of the school year only, using the Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning …
The Efficacy And Safety Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Gail Tessler
The Efficacy And Safety Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, Gail Tessler
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The HPV virus is said to be the cause of many infections, warts, and cancers. In addition to the fact that the treatment for HPV is not always successful, not every individual knows that s/he is infected and is very likely to infect his or her partner, too. This is one factor that explains why 14 million people each year in America alone contract HPV and makes cervical cancer so threatening to many people worldwide. In light of this and the known dangers of cervical, anal, vaginal and penile cancers, the HPV vaccine was created to prevent an infection of …
The Search For Novel Inhibitors Of The Mycobacterial Enoyl Reductase Inha, Esther Saul
The Search For Novel Inhibitors Of The Mycobacterial Enoyl Reductase Inha, Esther Saul
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Isoniazid (INH), one of two first-line drugs used to treat tuberculosis (TB), has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of InhA, the mycobacterial enoyl reductase. However, the increasing resistance to INH makes it imperative to find alternative drugs that are as effective as the first-line drugs, yet active against INH-resistant strains. Since InhA has been validated as an excellent target of TB, there have been attempts to find novel inhibitors of InhA. Through rational drug design, a variety of high affinity InhA inhibitors were synthesized. Triclosan itself was observed to be a suboptimal inhibitor of InhA with a K …

Children Of Alcoholics: How Patterns And Perceptions Of The Past Affect The Future, Lindsey Anne Cochran
Children Of Alcoholics: How Patterns And Perceptions Of The Past Affect The Future, Lindsey Anne Cochran
University Honors Theses
Parental alcoholism and its effects on children has been a problem widely researched for years. This thesis seeks to find the patterns and roles that are established for children living with parental alcoholism and if/why these patterns are maintained into the individual's adulthood. In doing so, parental alcoholism and its effects on children and adult children will be examined through the lenses of symbolic interactionism and family systems theory. Several concepts that affect roles and patterns are discussed, some of the more prominent being: a) symbols, b) circular causality c) feedback loops, and d) roles. Through an in depth theoretical …
Modeling Bus Bunching With Petri Nets And Max-Plus Algebra, Harry Newcomb
Modeling Bus Bunching With Petri Nets And Max-Plus Algebra, Harry Newcomb
University Honors Theses
In this work, the possibilities of modeling bus bunching using Petri nets and max-plus algebra are investigated. The basic properties of max-plus algebra and Petri nets are introduced, and previous work modeling transportation networks with these tools is summarized. One previous model that incorporates a non-analytic feature is simplified to remove this feature while retaining the model's function, and it is proved that passenger interaction with the bus network cannot be modeled with autonomous timed event graphs with stop subnets.
Helly's Theorem And Its Equivalences Via Convex Analysis, Adam Robinson
Helly's Theorem And Its Equivalences Via Convex Analysis, Adam Robinson
University Honors Theses
Helly's theorem is an important result from Convex Geometry. It gives sufficient conditions for a family of convex sets to have a nonempty intersection. A large variety of proofs as well as applications are known. Helly's theorem also has close connections to two other well-known theorems from Convex Geometry: Radon's theorem and Carathéodory's theorem. In this project we study Helly's theorem and its relations to Radon's theorem and Carathéodory's theorem by using tools of Convex Analysis and Optimization. More precisely, we will give a novel proof of Helly's theorem, and in addition we show in a complete way that these …
Communication Tools Towards A Bioregional Consciousness, Elona Trogub
Communication Tools Towards A Bioregional Consciousness, Elona Trogub
University Honors Theses
Recognizing that ecological collapse is within reach, I draw upon the observations that poorly distributed power dynamics supported through the reinforcement of individualism, hierarchism, reductionism, linear thinking, etc. are some of the basic principles that pose a challenge when it comes to embracing new and very ancient ways of interacting with the rest of living systems. There exist “original instructions,” reinforced by recent scientific acknowledgements, that contain guidelines for needed action and interaction to prevent anthropogenic ecological collapse. I utilize storytelling as well as several of the leverage points for systems change suggested by Donella Meadows (1999) in deconstructing the …

A Race To The Finish: An Analysis Of Factors Contributing To The Achievement Gap In Portland Public School District, Victoria Noggle
A Race To The Finish: An Analysis Of Factors Contributing To The Achievement Gap In Portland Public School District, Victoria Noggle
University Honors Theses
Closing the achievement gap is one of the most talked about issues within the United States education system. The achievement gap refers to disproportionality in rates of achievement between white students and students of color. The question should not be how one closes the achievement gap but what factors contribute to the achievement gap and how these factors can be addressed. This paper looks at the achievement gap between white and black students on a national level, focusing on research addressing different factors pertaining to the gap. Five main factors contribute to the achievement gap between white and black students: …
Understanding Local Jazz Ecology : An Inquiry Into What Research Is Required To Develop A Comprehensive Understanding Of Local Jazz Scenes, Tristan Weitkamp
Understanding Local Jazz Ecology : An Inquiry Into What Research Is Required To Develop A Comprehensive Understanding Of Local Jazz Scenes, Tristan Weitkamp
University Honors Theses
This paper will examine the structure of local Jazz music economies and how the concepts of ecology (interaction between organisms and their environment) can apply to understanding and improving the health of this cultural sector. It will start by examining the academic knowledge in the related areas and then explore possible research methodology in order to better understand the economic situation of a local Jazz ecology. The methodology will then be presented in a framework for studying the Jazz ecology of Portland, Oregon. Once a research methodology has been developed, steps can be taken towards an informed understanding of local …
