Impact Of Location History Collection Schemes On Observed Human Mobility Features, Alicia Rodriguez-Carrion, Sajal K. Das, Celeste Campo, Carlos Garcia-Rubio

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Human mobility knowledge is key for urban planning or mobility model's design. Therefore, estimating reliable mobility parameters is crucial to lay an unbiased foundation. However, most works estimating such features rely on datasets made up of the history of mobile network cells where the user is located when she makes active use of the network, known as Call Data Records (CDRs), or every time their device connects to a new cell, without taking into account cell changes not caused by movement. Could we accurately characterize human mobility with such datasets? In this work we consider three approaches to collect network-based …

Exploring Optimization And Caching For Efficient Collection Operations, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Swetha Surapaneni, Sanjay K. Madria, Thomas Weigert

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many large programs operate on collection types. Extensive libraries are available in many programming languages, such as the C++ Standard Template Library, which make programming with collections convenient. Extending programming languages to provide collection queries as first-class constructs in the language would not only allow programmers to write queries explicitly in their programs but it would also allow compilers to leverage the wealth of experience available from the database domain to optimize such queries. This paper describes an approach to reduce the run time of programs involving explicit collection queries by performing run time query optimization that is effective for …

An Access Point To Device Association Technique For Optimized Data Transfer In Mobile Grids, Ansuman Banerjee, Himadri Sekhar Paul, Arijit Mukherjee, Pubali Datta, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a mobile grid computing framework where mobile devices are used as computing resources, minimizing the task offloading time remains an important issue. A task is an independent unit of execution consisting of a input data volume for execution and optionally a target-specific executable. We consider a mobile grid infrastructure where mobile devices are connected via Wi-Fi network and the grid infrastructure has a set of tasks (i.e. a set of data volumes) to be transferred to a subset of the mobile devices. In a Wi-Fi network, mobile devices usually associate themselves to the access points (APs) having the strongest …

Data Pattern Based Electromagnetic Interference Modeling For Ic Packaging, Nick K.H. Huang, Tao Wang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, X. Y. Xiong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is becoming more serious when the data rate of the digital system continues increasing. However, its modeling and analysis are very challenging. In this paper, a novel electromagnetic superposition method is developed to model the IC packaging electromagnetic emission. It employs the equivalence principle to obtain the electromagnetic field response over a broad spectrum. Then it uses the linear property of the passive parasitic system to superpose the contribution of different signals on the packaging. As a result, with certain pre-calculations, it is convenient to compute the electromagnetic emission efficiently from different signals with various data pattern …

Differential-Forms-Motivated Discretizations Of Electromagnetic Differential And Integral Equations, Qi I. Dai, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Yumao Wu Jan 2014

Differential-Forms-Motivated Discretizations Of Electromagnetic Differential And Integral Equations, Qi I. Dai, Weng Cho Chew, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Yumao Wu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this letter, we present a differential-forms-motivated procedure to unify and guide discretizations of differential and integral equations in computational electromagnetics (CEM). In order to solve such equations accurately, it is crucial to find an appropriate matrix representation of the governing differential or integral operator. Differential forms theory inspires a general procedure of selecting both expansion and test functions wisely. Many well-functioning discretizations in finite element method (FEM) and boundary element method (BEM) can be reinterpreted with this theory. Moreoever, our approach offers guidance for discretizing complicated problems where straightforward discretizations may not be available. © 2014 IEEE.

Robust And Resilient State-Dependent Control Of Continuous-Time Nonlinear Systems With General Performance Criteria, Xin Wang, Edwin E. Yaz, James Long Jan 2014

Robust And Resilient State-Dependent Control Of Continuous-Time Nonlinear Systems With General Performance Criteria, Xin Wang, Edwin E. Yaz, James Long

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A novel state-dependent control approach for continuous-time nonlinear systems with general performance criteria is presented in this paper. This controller is optimally robust for model uncertainties and resilient against control feedback gain perturbations in achieving general performance criteria to secure quadratic optimality with inherent asymptotic stability property together with quadratic dissipative type of disturbance reduction. For the system model, unstructured uncertainty description is assumed, which incorporates commonly used types of uncertainties, such as norm-bounded and positive real uncertainties as special cases. By solving a state-dependent linear matrix inequality at each time, sufficient condition for the control solution can be found …

Background: Visual-spatial and visual-motor perceptual difficulties contribute to school-aged learning problems. Hence, a need exists to address children’s visual-spatial and visual-motor perceptual difficulties as early as possible in the child’s school career. Thus, this study reports on the evaluation of the Anker Bilateral Spatial System’s (ABSS) effectiveness in remediating primary school children’s perceptual difficulties.

Method: Thirty-one children (17 boys and 14 girls) aged 6 to 12 years who had been identified by their classroom teacher as having observable visual-spatial and visual-motor perceptual difficulties participated in a 10-week pre/posttest intervention study. The study’s pre/posttest assessments included the Developmental Test of Visual-Motor …

Australian Smes: Waste Sent To Landfill, Janice Redmond, Elizabeth A. Walker, Craig M. Parker, Mike Simpson Jan 2014

Australian Smes: Waste Sent To Landfill, Janice Redmond, Elizabeth A. Walker, Craig M. Parker, Mike Simpson

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Landfill waste has a negative impact on the environment and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are believed to be significant contributors. There is little government or scholarly research, however, quantifying the collective volume of waste SMEs send to landfill. The limited studies instead measure total volumes (landfill and recycling combined) and/or do not distinguish between specific waste streams (e.g. wood) and subcategories (e.g. dust). This paper contributes to knowledge by reconceptualising SME waste into subcategories and by measuring landfill volumes. It presents findings from 404 Australian SMEs which found that, in descending order, cardboard, paper, plastic wrap, wood dust and …

Climate Change And Mediterranean Seagrass Meadows: A Synopsis For Environmental Managers, G Pergent, H Bazairi, C N. Bianchi, C F. Boudouresque, M C. Buia, S Calvo, P Clabaut, M Harmelinvivien, M Angel Mateo, M Montefalcone, C Morri, S Orfanidis, C Pergentmartini, R Semroud, Oscar Serrano, T Thibaut, A Tomasello, M Verlaque

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This synopsis focuses on the effects of climate change on Mediterranean seagrasses, and associated communities, and on the contribution of the main species, Posidonia oceanica, to the mitigation of climate change effects through sequestering carbon dioxide. Whilst the regression of seagrass meadows is well documented, generally linked to anthropogenic pressures, global warming could be a cause of new significant regression, notably linked to the introduction of exotic species, the rise of Sea-Surface Temperature (SST), and relative sea level. Seagrass communities could also be affected by climate change through the replacement of high structural complexity seagrass species by species of lower …

Mental Models For The Negation Of Conjunctions And Disjunctions, Guillermo Macbeth, Eugenia Razumiejczyk, María C. Crivello, Claudia Bolzán, Carolina I. Pereyra Girardi, Guillermo Campitelli Jan 2014

Mental Models For The Negation Of Conjunctions And Disjunctions, Guillermo Macbeth, Eugenia Razumiejczyk, María C. Crivello, Claudia Bolzán, Carolina I. Pereyra Girardi, Guillermo Campitelli

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study investigates why reasoning that involves negation is extremely difficult. We presented participants with reasoning problems containing sentences with negation of conjunctions and disjunctions in order to test predictions derived from the Mental Models Theory of human thought. According to this theory, reasoning consists of representing and comparing possibilities. Different sentential forms would require different cognitive demands. In particular, responses to a sentential negation task would be modulated by working memory load. This prediction would hold for correct responses but also for the general pattern of responses that includes incorrect responses when the task offers different response options. A …

Mechanisms And Ecological Role Of Carbon Transfer Within Coastal Seascapes, Glenn A. Hyndes, Ivan Nagelkerken, Rebecca J. Mcleod, Rod M. Connolly, Paul S. Lavery, Mathew A. Vanderklift

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Worldwide, coastal systems provide some of the most productive habitats, which potentially influence a range of marine and terrestrial ecosystems through the transfer of nutrients and energy. Several reviews have examined aspects of connectivity within coastal seascapes, but the scope of those reviews has been limited to single systems or single vectors. We use the transfer of carbon to examine the processes of connectivity through multiple vectors in multiple ecosystems using four coastal seascapes as case studies. We discuss and compare the main vectors of carbon connecting different ecosystems, and then the natural and human-induced factors that influence the magnitude …

Computer Science Concept Inventories: Past And Future, Cynthia Taylor, Daniel Zingaro, Leo Porter, Kevin C. Webb, C. B. Lee, Michael Clancy

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Concept Inventories (CIs) are assessments designed to measure student learning of core concepts. CIs have become well known for their major impact on pedagogical techniques in other sciences, especially physics. Presently, there are no widely used, validated CIs for computer science. However, considerable groundwork has been performed in the form of identifying core concepts, analyzing student misconceptions, and developing CI assessment questions. Although much of the work has been focused on CS1 and a CI has been developed for digital logic, some preliminary work on CIs is underway for other courses. This literature review examines CI work in other STEM …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Background. The disruption of physiologic vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration initiates atherosclerosis development. The biochemical mechanisms leading to dysfunctional VSMC motility remain unknown. Recently, cytokine BMP-2 has been implicated in various vascular physiologic and pathologic processes. However, whether BMP-2 has any effect upon VSMC motility, or by what manner, has never been investigated. Methods. VSMCs were adenovirally transfected to genetically overexpress BMP-2. VSMC motility was detected by modified Boyden chamber assay, confocal time-lapse video assay, and a colony wounding assay. Gene chip array and RT-PCR were employed to identify genes potentially regulated by BMP-2. Western blot and real-time PCR …

The Market In Unmatured Tort Claims: Twenty-Five Years Later, Stephen G. Marks Jan 2014

The Market In Unmatured Tort Claims: Twenty-Five Years Later, Stephen G. Marks

Faculty Scholarship

In an article in 1989 in the Virginia Law Review, Professor Robert Cooter argued for changes in the law that would facilitate the development of a market in unmatured tort claims. An unmatured tort claim is a potential claim that a potential victim has before any injury has occurred. Cooter proposed that potential victims have the right to sell their unmatured tort claims. That is, Cooter proposed that potential victims be allowed to sell their right to sue even before an accident or injury ever occurs. Even twenty-five years later, the proposal remains both bold and imaginative, and yet it …
