Investigation Of Fault-Related Small-Scale Fluid Flow In Geothermal Fields By Numerical Modeling, Doğa Doğan Jan 2014

Investigation Of Fault-Related Small-Scale Fluid Flow In Geothermal Fields By Numerical Modeling, Doğa Doğan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this paper, hydrothermal circulations and temperature distributions in geothermal areas with fault zones are investigated. It is shown that existence of the fault zones influences both the fluid circulation patterns and velocities. Reciprocal influence of the local fluid circulations and the temperature distribution is demonstrated. A 2-dimensional square porous layer is used for modeling the geothermal field. Faults are modeled as vertical porous layers. It is assumed that faults are located inside the geothermal field and have a higher permeability than the field itself. Anisotropic and isotropic models are used to simulate the permeability structure of the faults. Several …

Using Formal Methods To Validate The Usage, Protocols, And Feasibility In Large Scale Computing Systems, Saif Ur Rehman Malik Jan 2014

Using Formal Methods To Validate The Usage, Protocols, And Feasibility In Large Scale Computing Systems, Saif Ur Rehman Malik

Electrical and Computer Engineering

A paradigm shift has occurred in the Information and Communication Technology sector. The main obstacle to relegate complex and sensitive tasks is not the inadequate speed and unsatisfactory computing power of the existing machines. However, the inability to design and implement the systems, with a desirable degree of confidence in the correctness and reliability, under different circumstances, has crept in to be the primary concerns in achieving high performance. The hardware and software systems are growing inevitably in scale and functionality, such as cloud computing systems and Data Center (DC). In the said perspective, the complexity of the systems is …

On The Secrecy Capacity Of Fading Gaussian Wire-Tap Channel, Mohammad Kamal Hossan Jan 2014

On The Secrecy Capacity Of Fading Gaussian Wire-Tap Channel, Mohammad Kamal Hossan

Electrical and Computer Engineering

We consider the so called “wire-tap channel”, where a transmitter sends secret information to its receiver in the presence of an eavesdropping receiver with similar signal processing capability as the desired receiver. It is assumed that all the communication links have time varying signal strengths which are only known at the corresponding receivers and not at the transmitter. In this thesis, we address the problem of characterizing the maximum possible rate of secret and reliable information transmission on such a wire-tap channel. We first characterize the secrecy capacity of a corresponding layered abstraction of the channel, and then, we derive …

Efficient Message Dissemination Framework For Diverse Wireless Networks, Osman Khalid Jan 2014

Efficient Message Dissemination Framework For Diverse Wireless Networks, Osman Khalid

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Wireless networks exhibit diversity, ranging from mostly disconnected delay tolerant networks and partially connected mobile ad hoc networks, to mostly connected cellular networks. Besides having useful applications, including, vehicular communications, emergency response networks, battlefield networks, and wildlife monitoring, wireless networks face numerous challenges, such as unreliable connectivity, bandwidth restrictions, interference, frequent disruptions and delays, power outages, message loss, and malicious attacks. Moreover, when nodes are mobile, communication may be disrupted frequently for longer time periods. Designing protocols to tolerate such disruptions is challenging because of the extreme uncertainty in mobile wireless environments. Most of the existing approaches either require exact …

Perceptions Of Leaders, Teachers, Students And Parents In High Performing West Australian Catholic Secondary Schools Within The Context Of Tertiary Entrance Examinations, Michael O'Neill Jan 2014

Perceptions Of Leaders, Teachers, Students And Parents In High Performing West Australian Catholic Secondary Schools Within The Context Of Tertiary Entrance Examinations, Michael O'Neill

Theses

As for most of the developed world, Australia is no different in its scrupulous evaluation of school performance data. Annually much attention is given to data surrounding the performance of students, teachers and schools in high stakes Tertiary Entrance Examinations as students seek to qualify for a variety of university programs. So called ‘league tables’ are produced measuring school performance on a number of criteria which differ marginally from state to state. Such tables identify both successful and less successful schools. Notwithstanding the limitations of such comparisons and the fact that success is a relative term there is a great …

Effects Of Toxic Cyanobacteria (Microcystis Aeruginosa) On The Feeding And Reproduction Ecology Of The Copepod Eurytemora Affinis From Green Bay, Lake Michigan, Nicholas J. Barrett

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Toxic Cyanobacteria is known to be a bad food source to consumers as well as a main contributor to harmful algal blooms. This study investigates the feeding relationship between an invasive copepod in the Great Lakes system, Eurytemora affinis, and a toxic strain of cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa. E.affinis has been shown to feed on toxic cyanobacteria. By measuring the filtering rate, ingestion rate, egg production and offspring size between three different food conditions, we hope to gain insight into the effects of toxic cyanobacteria on the feeding and reproduction of this copepod. Food sources include a good green algal …

Time Required For A Sphere To Fall Through A Funnel, J. Sridharan, Brett Altschul, S. Crittenden Jan 2014

Time Required For A Sphere To Fall Through A Funnel, J. Sridharan, Brett Altschul, S. Crittenden

Faculty Publications

We experimentally test a recently proposed theory of the behavior of a single frictional, inelastic, spherical particle falling under gravity through a symmetric funnel. We find that, while many qualitative results of the theory are supported by the data, the quantitative behavior of a real sphere falling through a real funnel differs from the predictions. The behavior above a 45◦ funnel angle, the duration, and the dependence of the duration on the initial horizontal position all show significant deviations from the predicted results. In particular, for drop positions near the gap, the duration of the fall is often significantly less …

Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, percentage) and inferential statistics (simple correlation, multiple regression, and two sample t-test) were used to analyze the quantitative data. The open-ended questions were coded and categorized based on the student responses. There were statistically significant associations between student …

A Historical Analysis Of Natural Gas Demand, Nathan Richard Dalbec Jan 2014

A Historical Analysis Of Natural Gas Demand, Nathan Richard Dalbec

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This thesis analyzes demand in the US energy market for natural gas, oil, and coal over the period of 1918-2013 and examines their price relationship over the period of 2007-2013. Diagnostic tests for time series were used; Augmented Dickey-Fuller, Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin, Johansen cointegration, Granger Causality and weak exogeneity tests. Directed acyclic graphs were used as a complimentary test for endogeneity. Due to the varied results in determining endogeneity, a seemingly unrelated regression model was used which assumes all right hand side variables in the three demand equations were exogenous. A number of factors were significant in determining demand for natural gas …

A New Methodology For The Design And Tuning Of Robust Pid Controllers In Electric Drives, Chaudhry Arshad Mehmood Jan 2014

A New Methodology For The Design And Tuning Of Robust Pid Controllers In Electric Drives, Chaudhry Arshad Mehmood

Electrical and Computer Engineering

AC induction motor-drive systems are the backbone for numerous industrial applications, such as aerospace, medical equipment, and nuclear power plants. The control performance of electric drives is sensitive to several uncontrollable disturbances from changes in ambient conditions in the form of machine parameter variations such as: magnetizing inductance (Lm), and rotor resistance (Rr). Such variations may trigger instability because of mismatch between the reference and desired conditions. The most common techniques to solve the issue are: (a) gain adaptation that requires instrumentation to monitor system, (b) nonlinear control methods, such as sliding mode, feedback linearization, and (c) robust control method, …

A Compact Cylindrical-Shape Microstrip Structure With Cloaking Properties For Mutual Coupling Reduction In Array Antennas, Syed Aftab Naqvi Jan 2014

A Compact Cylindrical-Shape Microstrip Structure With Cloaking Properties For Mutual Coupling Reduction In Array Antennas, Syed Aftab Naqvi

Electrical and Computer Engineering

A cylindrical-shaped microstrip structure with cloaking properties is presented as a shielding device to reduce the mutual coupling between two patch antennas. The surface comprises of a number of 2-port microstrip (2-PM) elements printed on individual substrates and, to enclose a particular region, several 2-PM elements are interconnected into a cylindrical shape. Each 2-PM element has the capability of coupling an incident EM field on the surface to the adjacent interconnected elements. Then, because the 2-PM elements are connected into a cylindrical shape, the incident EM field is re-radiated from the other interconnected 2-PM elements in a direction away from …

Note On Rainbow Connection In Oriented Graphs With Diameter 2, Rebecca Holliday, Colton Magnant, Pouria Salehi Nowbandegani

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In this note, we provide a sharp upper bound on the rainbow connection number of tournaments of diameter 2. For a tournament Τ of diameter 2, we show 2 ≤ → rc (Τ) ≤ 3. Furthermore, we provide a general upper bound on the rainbow κ-connection number of tournaments as a simple example of the probabilistic method. Finally, we show that an edge-colored tournament of κthdiameter 2 has rainbow κ-connection number at most approximately κ2.

Examination Of The Influence Of Instructional Coaching On Teacher And Principal Behavior, Attitudes, And The Resultant Learning Environment, Cynthia Pulkowski Jan 2014

Examination Of The Influence Of Instructional Coaching On Teacher And Principal Behavior, Attitudes, And The Resultant Learning Environment, Cynthia Pulkowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past few decades, stakeholders in education have placed significant emphasis on student achievement. Educational reform in the United States and internationally has set ambitious goals for student learning. Additionally, educational reform demands transformations in classroom practices for teachers to become agents of change. As such, teacher professionalism is at a threshold; moral purpose and change agentry are implicit in good teaching and effective change (Fullan, 1993). Systems do not change themselves; rather, they change through the actions of individuals and small groups (Fullan, 1993). In light of this notion, and in the face of educational reform and accountability, …

Cultivating A Culture Of Success In Catholic Secondary Schools In Tanzania, Peter Felix Asantebwana Jan 2014

Cultivating A Culture Of Success In Catholic Secondary Schools In Tanzania, Peter Felix Asantebwana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many people agree that a "child's teacher can make a bigger difference to his or her educational success than most other school variables" (Darling-Hammond, 2006, p. 19). Quality education as a result of quality teaching has been a subject of discussion in many countries (Karras, & Wolhuter, 2010). According to Nyerere (1967), "the purpose of education is to pass from one generation to the next the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of the society, and to prepare the young people for their future membership of the society and their active participation in its maintenance or development" (p. 268). Following the history …

The A Priori Nature Of The Political: Democracy And Scientific Method In Thomas Hobbes, Patrick Craig Jan 2014

The A Priori Nature Of The Political: Democracy And Scientific Method In Thomas Hobbes, Patrick Craig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation provides a treatment of Hobbes's politics in light of his conception of scientific method. The scholarship devoted to these two components of Hobbes's thought, that is his account of scientific method and his political philosophy, have largely existed in isolation from one another. Reading his politics through the lens of his account of scientific method, I bring two bodies of research on Hobbes together, and in so doing, offer a unique account of his political philosophy. When Hobbes's political philosophy is approached in the way I suggest, what one finds is not a simple defense of authoritarian absolutism, …

An Analysis Of Dnf Maximum Entropy, Belinda Hasanaj Jan 2014

An Analysis Of Dnf Maximum Entropy, Belinda Hasanaj

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the entropy of functions computed by monotone DNF formulas. Entropy, which is a measure of uncertainty, information, and choice, has been long studied in the field of mathematics and computer science. We will be considering spectral entropy and focus on the conjecture that for each fixed number of terms t, the maximum entropy of a function computed by a t-term DNF is achieved by a function computable by a read-once DNF. A Python program was written to first express the t-term DNF Boolean functions as multilinear polynomials and then to compute their spectral entropy. This was …

Approximate Dynamic Programming, Local Or Global Optimal Solution?, Ali Heydari, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of global optimality analysis of approximate dynamic programming-based solutions is investigated in this study. Sufficient conditions for global optimality are obtained without requiring the state penalizing terms in the cost function or the functions representing the dynamics to be convex functions. Afterwards, the theoretical results are confirmed through a qualitative analysis of an example problem. © 2014 American Automatic Control Council.

Optimal Switching Of Nonlinear Systems With Free Mode Sequence, Ali Heydari, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2014

Optimal Switching Of Nonlinear Systems With Free Mode Sequence, Ali Heydari, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Approximate dynamic programming is utilized in this study to develop solutions for optimal switching problems. The order of the active subsystems and the number of switches are free, and an online solution is developed that produces optimal performance. Motivated by the development in the adaptive critic's literature, the proposed method uses a critic and as many actors as the number of subsystems in order to conduct optimal scheduling in real-time based on the instantaneous states of the system. It is observed that once the neural networks are trained offline based on the proposed algorithm, they provide solutions for a range …

Adaptive Control Of Uncertain Systems With Gain Scheduled Reference Models, Mehrdad Pakmehr, Tansel Yucelen Jan 2014

Adaptive Control Of Uncertain Systems With Gain Scheduled Reference Models, Mehrdad Pakmehr, Tansel Yucelen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops a new model reference adaptive control approach for uncertain systems with gain scheduled reference models in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) setting. Specifically, adaptive state feedback for output tracking control problem of MIMO nonlinear systems is studied and gain scheduled reference model system is used for generating desired state trajectories. Using convex optimization tools, a single Lyapunov matrix is computed for multiple linearization's near equilibrium and non-equilibrium points of the nonlinear closed loop gain scheduled reference system. This approach guarantees stability of the closed loop gain scheduled system. Adaptive state feedback control scheme is then developed, and its …

Reference Control Architecture In The Presence Of Measurement Noise And Actuator Dynamics, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric Johnson

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper the command governor-based model reference control architecture is developed and analyzed for uncertain dynamical systems in the presence measurement noise and actuator dynamics. Specifically, the command governor is a dynamical system that adjusts the trajectory of a given command in order to enable an uncertain system to be able to follow an ideal reference system capturing a desired closed-loop dynamical system behavior both in transient-time and steady-state. In this paper, we present modifications to the original command governor approach in order to increase its robustness properties against measurement noise and actuator dynamics. In particular, the modified architecture …
