Annealing Effects Of Zno Thin Films On P-Si(100) Substrate Deposited By Pfcvad, Kamuran Kara, Ebru Şenadim Tüzemen, Ramazan Esen

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this study, ZnO films were prepared on p-Si substrates using the pulsed filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition (PFCVAD) method. We report the effect of annealing temperature on structural and optical properties. The crystallographic structure and the size of the crystallites in the films were studied by means of X-ray diffraction. The films had a weak peak (100) orientation at 2theta = sim 32°. X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-deposited ZnO and the film annealed at 850 °C showed a strong ZnO (002) diffraction peak centered at 34.1° and 34.5°, respectively. The (004) peak was seen for film annealed at …

Neutron-Rich ^{208}Pb Nucleus With Delta Excitation Under Compression, Mohammed Hassen Eid Abu-Sei'leek Jan 2014

Neutron-Rich ^{208}Pb Nucleus With Delta Excitation Under Compression, Mohammed Hassen Eid Abu-Sei'leek

Turkish Journal of Physics

The spherical Hartree-Fock approximation is applied to a no-core shell model with a realistic effective baryon-baryon interaction. The ground state properties of a heavy spherical neutron-rich doubly magic ^{208}Pb nucleus under compression are investigated. It is found that the nucleus becomes more bound with the occurrence of Delta resonances. The creation of Delta increases as the compression is continuous. There is a considerable reduction in the compressibility when the Delta degree of freedom is activated. It is found that the Delta particle is the basic component of the ^{208}Pb nucleus besides nucleons at the ground state without any compression. When …

The Influence Of Pomegranate-Peel Extracts On In Vitro Gas Production Kinetics Of Rumen Inoculum Of Sheep, Mohammad Javad Abarghuei, Yousef Rouzbehan, Abdel-Fattah Salem

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Different levels of pomegranate peel extracted by either water (PEH) or solvent mixture (PEM) were evaluated for their effect on in vitro gas production and ruminal fermentation patterns. Two levels of PEH or PEM (15 and 30 mg total phenolics (TP)/g DM of basal diet) were compared to a control (0) level. Ruminal fermentation parameters such as 24-h partitioning factor (PF_{24}), gas yield (GY_{24}), in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD), metabolizable energy (ME), and microbial protein (MP) were calculated. The addition of PEH or PEM had no effect (P > 0.05) on asymptotic gas production, apparent degraded substrate (ADS), IVOMD, ME, …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Olive (Olea europaea L.) is an important fruit crop, with many health promoting properties being continuously discovered. World demand for both the fruit and olive oil is increasing in pace and hence countries try to meet the demand by disseminating 1 or 2 productive and adaptive cultivars to different regions formerly dominated by local cultivars. This study was performed to investigate the level of diversity in a very productive and adaptive cultivar, Gemlik, which has started to dominate most of the olive growing regions of Turkey. Three different marker systems, namely microsatellites (SSR), RAPD, and AFLP, with 15, 20, and …

Antibody-Drug Gold Nanoantennas With Raman Spectroscopic Fingerprints For In Vivo Tumour Theranostics, Joao Conde, Chenchen Bao, Daxiang Cui, Pedro Baptista, Furong Tian

Articles

Inspired by the ability of SERS nanoantennas to provide an integrated platform to enhance disease targeting in vivo, we developed a highly sensitive probe for in vivo tumoral recognition with the capacity to target specific cancer biomarkers such as epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) on human cancer cells and xenograft tumour models. Here, we used ~90 nm gold nanoparticles capped by a Raman reporter, encapsulated and entrapped by larger polymers and a FDA antibody-drug conjugate –Cetuximab (Erbitux®) – that specifically targets EGFR and turns off a main signalling cascade for cancer cells to proliferate and survive. These drug/SERS gold nanoantennas …

Solving A New Bi-Objective Joint Replenishment Inventory Model With Modified Rand And Genetic Algorithms, Ommolbanin Yousefi, Seyed Jafar Sadjadi Jan 2014

Solving A New Bi-Objective Joint Replenishment Inventory Model With Modified Rand And Genetic Algorithms, Ommolbanin Yousefi, Seyed Jafar Sadjadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

There are many cases in real inventory systems where more than one objective must be optimized. The main purpose of this research is to develop a multiobjective joint replenishment problem (JRP), where one objective is the minimization of the total inventory investment and another is the minimization of the total inventory ordering and holding costs. To solve the suggested model, 3 algorithms are proposed. In the first algorithm, the existing RAND method, called the best heuristic for solving the JRP, is modified and a new heuristic algorithm is developed to be applicable to the JRP with 2 objectives. The second …

Contrast Enhancement Using Linear Image Combinations Algorithm (Ceulica) For Enhancing Brain Magnetic Resonance Images, Burak Yilmaz, Yüksel Özbay

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images support important information about brain diseases for physicians. Morphological alterations in brain tissues indicate the probable existence of a disease in many cases. Proper estimation of these tissues, measuring their sizes, and analyzing their image patterns are parts of the diagnosis process. Therefore, the interpretability and perceptibility level of the MRI image is valuable for physicians. In this paper, a new image contrast enhancement algorithm based on linear combinations is presented. The proposed algorithm is focused on improving the interpretability and perceptibility of the image information. An MRI image is presented to the algorithm, …

Online Feature Selection And Classification With Incomplete Data, Habi̇l Kalkan Jan 2014

Online Feature Selection And Classification With Incomplete Data, Habi̇l Kalkan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a classification system in which learning, feature selection, and classification for incomplete data are simultaneously carried out in an online manner. Learning is conducted on a predefined model including the class-dependent mean vectors and correlation coefficients, which are obtained by incrementally processing the incoming observations with missing features. A nearest neighbor with a Gaussian mixture model, whose parameters are also estimated from the trained model, is used for classification. When a testing observation is received, the algorithm discards the missing attributes on the observation and ranks the available features by performing feature selection on the model that …

Model-Free Controller With An Observer Applied In Real-Time To A 3-Dof Helicopter, Ahsene Boubakir, Salim Labiod, Fares Boudjema, Franck Plestan Jan 2014

Model-Free Controller With An Observer Applied In Real-Time To A 3-Dof Helicopter, Ahsene Boubakir, Salim Labiod, Fares Boudjema, Franck Plestan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a model-free controller with an observer is presented for a class of uncertain continuous-time multiinput-multioutput nonlinear dynamic systems. The proposed model-free control law consists of 2 parts: the first part is a linear control term used to specify the dynamics of the closed loop system, and the second part is a compensator of the effects of uncertainties and external disturbances. The compensator is synthesized from an estimator of the effects of uncertainties and disturbances based on the Lyapunov approach. In order to estimate the unavailable states of the controlled system, a linear state observer is designed. All …

In Defense Of Defense: A Statistical Look At Roster Construction, Coaching Strategy, And Team Defense In The National Basketball Association, Luke Ronald Peterson Jan 2014

In Defense Of Defense: A Statistical Look At Roster Construction, Coaching Strategy, And Team Defense In The National Basketball Association, Luke Ronald Peterson

Honors Program Theses

The three major organized sports featured in the United States – baseball, basketball, and football – cover the spectrum of analytic probability. Baseball, with its basic two parts, pitcher and batter, lies at the easy or low end of the analytic spectrum and so it was the first sport to be studied. From early baseball cards first appearing in the 1890s to The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstracts of the 1980s to the SABRmetrics of today, baseball coaches and fans everywhere are adding a page on analytic probability to their playbooks. Football lies at the high or difficult end of …

Statistical Modeling Of The Number Of Deaths Of Children In Bangladesh, Morshed Alam, Manzur R. Farazi, Joseph Stiglitz, Munni Begum Jan 2014

Statistical Modeling Of The Number Of Deaths Of Children In Bangladesh, Morshed Alam, Manzur R. Farazi, Joseph Stiglitz, Munni Begum

Journal Articles: Biostatistics

Efforts to reduce the number of children’s death in developing countries through health care programs focus more to the prevention and control of diseases than to determining the underlying risk factors/predictors and addressing these through proper interventions. This study aims to identify socioeconomic and demographic predictors of the number of children’s death to women aged 12-49 from the Bangladesh Health and Demographic Survey (BDHS) administered in 2011. The number of children’s death in a family is a non-negative count response variable. The average number of children’s death is found to be 28 per 100 women with a variance of 44per …

A Framework For Explaining Accounting Students’ Formal Communication Gap, Charles Harter, Robert Marley Jan 2014

A Framework For Explaining Accounting Students’ Formal Communication Gap, Charles Harter, Robert Marley

Accountancy: Faculty Publications

This paper introduces a framework that explains how innovations in communication technology have affected students’ communication skills. Our framework suggests that new communication mediums have reduced students’ exposure to contexts requiring formal communication and increased students’ exposure to contexts utilizing informal communication. As a result, today’s accounting students have less formal communication experience, thus less developed formal communication skills than their predecessors. To mitigate this communication gap, we discuss adapting the accounting classroom to familiarize, hone, and instill formal communication skills.

Big Data Ethics, Neil M. Richards, Jonathan H. King Jan 2014

Big Data Ethics, Neil M. Richards, Jonathan H. King

Scholarship@WashULaw

We are on the cusp of a “Big Data” Revolution, in which increasingly large datasets are mined for important predictions and often surprising insights. The predictions and decisions this revolution will enable will transform our society in ways comparable to the Industrial Revolution. We are now at a critical moment; big data uses today will be sticky and will settle both default norms and public notions of what is “no big deal” regarding big data predictions for years to come.

In this paper, we argue that big data, broadly defined, is producing increased powers of institutional awareness and power that …

Estimating Ultimate Recovery In Shale Wells Based On Facts, Faegheh Javadi Jan 2014

Estimating Ultimate Recovery In Shale Wells Based On Facts, Faegheh Javadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Natural gas, as one of the nation's major energy sources plays a vital role in the US energy mix. In recent years, the production from Shale has focused much attention on this source of hydrocarbon. As an essential step for the production planning, natural gas professionals estimate production and ultimate recovery (EUR) throughout the life of wells. The fluid production rate (q) usually varies as a function of rock properties, well, and completion design parameters. The variation associated with these parameters is a source of uncertainty in estimating the long term production for unconventional reservoirs.;A number of methodologies have been …

A New Focus For The Future: Historic Preservation Practices And Vocational High School Curriculum, A Massachusetts Concentration, Duane D. Houghton

Historic Preservation Theses

Graduates of vocational high schools account for the largest group of trade professionals in the construction and remodeling industry. The various concentrations provide prospective graduates with the skills, knowledge and education they need to succeed in the industry. After graduation former students are prepared to hold several different jobs in the industrial, commercial and residential areas; some work as independent contractors for various clients and projects, while others may be hired by firms on an ongoing basis.

The issue exists that although these types of vocational schools are producing valuable assets to the community they seem to promote construction and …

Preservice Teachers’ Motivation, Sense Of Teaching Efficacy, And Expectation Of Reality Shock, Hyunjin Kim, Yoonjung Cho

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

The present study investigated how pre-service teachers’ motivation and their sense of teaching efficacy influence their expectation about reality shock during the first year of professional teaching. A total of 533 pre-service teachers at a state university in the US Midwest participated in this study. The results showed that the pre-service teachers’ expectation of reality shock was negatively related to teacher efficacy and intrinsic motivation while it was positively related to introjected and external motivation. The results of a hierarchical regression analysis revealed that pre-service teachers’ sense of efficacy and introjected motivation were strong predictors of their expectation of reality …

Predictive Modeling Of Coupled Multi-Physics Systems: Ii. Illustrative Application To Reactor Physics, Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Madalina Corina Badea Jan 2014

Predictive Modeling Of Coupled Multi-Physics Systems: Ii. Illustrative Application To Reactor Physics, Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Madalina Corina Badea

Faculty Publications

This work presents paradigm applications to reactor physics of the innovative mathematical methodology for "predictive modeling of coupled multi-physics systems (PMCMPS)" developed by Cacuci (2014). This methodology enables the assimilation of experimental and computational information and computes optimally predicted responses and model parameters with reduced predicted uncertainties, taking fully into account the coupling terms between the multi-physics systems, but using only the computational resources that would be needed to perform predictive modeling on each system separately. The paradigm examples presented in this work are based on a simple neutron diffusion model, chosen so as to enable closed-form solutions with clear …

Comparison Of Instrumentation To Measure Air And Soil-Surface Temperature Variability In Northern Alaska, Katrina Keleher Jan 2014

Comparison Of Instrumentation To Measure Air And Soil-Surface Temperature Variability In Northern Alaska, Katrina Keleher

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring (CALM) project has been observing permafrost (perennially frozen ground) and its overlaying active layer (which freezes and thaws annually) in northern Alaska’s Kuparuk River watershed and throughout the polar regions since the mid 1990’s to detect long-term responses to climatic change. The soil-surface temperature data is collected by thermistors that were positioned immediately below the surface of the ground at nine locations within a transect of 1-ha plots arranged from north to south across the region. Locations within each plot were individually selected to represent a full range of microsite conditions, with distinctions in vegetation, …

Disentangling The Effects Of Student Attitudes And Behaviors On Academic Performance, Susan Janssen, Maureen O'Brien Jan 2014

Disentangling The Effects Of Student Attitudes And Behaviors On Academic Performance, Susan Janssen, Maureen O'Brien

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The interplay among motivation, ability, attitudes, behaviors, homework, and learning is unclear from previous research. We analyze data collected from 687 students enrolled in seven economics courses. A model explaining homework and exam scores is estimated, and separate analyses of ability and motivation groups are conducted. We find that motivation and ability explain variation in both homework and exam scores. Attitudes and behaviors, such as procrastination and working with others directly, affect homework score, but not exam score. These effects are not the same within all motivation and ability groups. Given that homework is the strongest predictor of exam score, …
