Development Of Silicon-Based Anodes And In-Situ Characterization Techniques For Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinho Yang Jan 2014

Development Of Silicon-Based Anodes And In-Situ Characterization Techniques For Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinho Yang

Wayne State University Dissertations

Development of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with higher capacity has been booming worldwide, as growing concerns about environmental issues and increasing petroleum costs. The demands for the LIBs include high energy and power densities, and better cyclic stability in order to meet a wide range of applications, such as portable devices and electric vehicles. Silicon has recently been explored as a promising anode material due to its low discharge potential (<0.4 V) and high specific capacity (4200 mAh g-1). The capacity of silicon potentially exceeds more than 10 times of the conventional graphite anode (372 mAh g-1). However, the silicon anode experiences huge volume …

Algorithms And Tools For Computational Analysis Of Human Transcriptome Using Rna-Seq, Nan Deng Jan 2014

Algorithms And Tools For Computational Analysis Of Human Transcriptome Using Rna-Seq, Nan Deng

Wayne State University Dissertations

Alternative splicing plays a key role in regulating gene expression, and more than 90% of human genes are alternatively spliced through different types of alternative splicing. Dysregulated alternative splicing events have been linked to a number of human diseases. Recently, high-throughput RNA-Seq technologies have provided unprecedented opportunities to better characterize and understand transcriptomes, in particular useful for the detection of splicing variants between healthy and diseased human transcriptomes.

We have developed two novel algorithms and tools and a computational workflow to interrogate human transcriptomes between healthy and diseased conditions. The first is a read count-based Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and tool, …

Acting Out Citizenship In Global And Local Contexts, Whitney Nicole Hardin Jan 2014

Acting Out Citizenship In Global And Local Contexts, Whitney Nicole Hardin

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation argues for a more inclusive definition of citizenship by suggesting that it is best understood as the ability and desire to work on public problems with others. In the Westphalian nation-state, citizenship is often understood to be a collection of legal and political rights determined and administered through institutions. These institutions fail to account for the desire of individuals to express convictions and work on problems that they experience locally. Our lived experience of citizenship exceeds the boundaries of institutions, but these actions are often dismissed as a result of the rhetoric used to talk about citizenship and …

Building A Scalable And High-Performance Key-Value Store System, Yuehai Xu Jan 2014

Building A Scalable And High-Performance Key-Value Store System, Yuehai Xu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Contemporary web sites can store and process very large amounts of data. To provide timely service to their users, they have adopted key-value (KV) stores, which is a simple but effective caching infrastructure atop the conventional databases that store these data, to boost performance. Examples are Facebook, Twitter and Amazon. As yet little is known about the realistic workloads outside of the companies that operate them, this dissertation work provides a detailed workload study on Facebook's Memcached, which is one of the world's largest KV deployment. We analyze the Memcached workload from the perspective of server-side performance, request composition, caching …

The Design, Analysis, & Application Of Multi-Modal Real-Time Embedded Systems, Masud Ahmed Jan 2014

The Design, Analysis, & Application Of Multi-Modal Real-Time Embedded Systems, Masud Ahmed

Wayne State University Dissertations

For many hand-held computing devices (e.g., smartphones), multiple operational modes are preferred because of their flexibility. In addition to their designated purposes, some of these devices provide a platform for different types of services, which include rendering of high-quality multimedia. Upon such devices, temporal isolation among co-executing applications is very important to ensure that each application receives an acceptable level of quality-of-service. In order to provide strong guarantees on services, multimedia applications and real-time control systems maintain timing constraints in the form of deadlines for recurring tasks. A flexible real-time multi-modal system will ideally provide system designers the option to …

Environmental Stressors: Pathways Of Exposure And Aquatic Invertebrate Response, Carly Jean Nowicki Jan 2014

Environmental Stressors: Pathways Of Exposure And Aquatic Invertebrate Response, Carly Jean Nowicki

Wayne State University Dissertations

The need to monitor freshwater and detect impairments prior to observable impacts is crucial to maintain species diversity and ecosystem function. Therefore, understanding the contribution of various matrices (i.e., sediment and water) to chemical exposure is critical for remediation of impacted sites.

To evaluate various matrices of chemical exposure, I focused on the organic pollutant polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) due to their relatively ubiquitous nature, high toxicity, and adverse effects on humans and wildlife. In complementary laboratory and field experiments, I compared the effects of aqueous versus sedimentary exposure of PCBs on invertebrates. In the laboratory, organisms exposed to PCB-contaminated sediments …

The Road Taken: A Between And Within Subjects Study Of Intervention Selection Decisions By Performance Improvement Professionals, Hillary Leigh Jan 2014

The Road Taken: A Between And Within Subjects Study Of Intervention Selection Decisions By Performance Improvement Professionals, Hillary Leigh

Wayne State University Dissertations

Background: In performance improvement, intervention selection is a complex decision that ought to be based on the best available evidence. Despite this, there is little research into what sources of evidence are used in intervention selection and what changes in belief occur during performance improvement professionals' decisions. Framed in decision theory, this study aims to resolve these problems. Methods: Sixty-one Certified Performance Technologists completed a dynamic, Web-delivered questionnaire where they provided a general assessment of intervention success (Pr1), then responded to 12 performance improvement scenarios; by selecting an intervention, providing a prior probability (Pr2), receiving additional …

Characterization Of Initial Iron Binding Location And The Structure/Iron Binding Site On S.Cerevisiae Isu And On D.Melanogaster Frataxin, Andria V. Rodrigues Jan 2014

Characterization Of Initial Iron Binding Location And The Structure/Iron Binding Site On S.Cerevisiae Isu And On D.Melanogaster Frataxin, Andria V. Rodrigues

Wayne State University Dissertations

Iron-induced free radical damage has been implicated in the pathology of diseases of iron overload such as Friedreich's Ataxia, a genetic disorder characterized by an accumulation of iron in actively metabolizing tissues ultimately leading to cardio- and neuro- degeneration and cell death. It is caused by an inability to synthesize the mitochondrial protein, frataxin. Frataxin has been shown by numerous groups to be a part of the iron-sulfur cluster (ISC) multicomplex, where it functions in the capacity of a potential iron provider and an allosteric modulator of both the cysteine desulfurase and scaffold protein ISU. My research has been focused …

Managing Conflict In Clinical Health Care With Diminished Reliance On Third Party Intervention: Forging An Ethical And Legal Mandate For Effective Physician-Patient Communication, Edward J. Bergman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

The world of clinical medicine is rife with conflict among caregivers, patients and their surrogates. This should not surprise given medicine's scientific, psychological, and language complexities, high stakes, fragmentation of care, multiplicity of players, time constraints, institutional politics, cultural differences, competing philosophies and economic dimensions. "Hospital life with its byzantine array of moving parts layered atop the unpredictable rhythms of illness is a permanent state of flux."

The Impact Of Ph On The Structure And Function Of Neural Cadherin, Jared Michael Jungles Jan 2014

The Impact Of Ph On The Structure And Function Of Neural Cadherin, Jared Michael Jungles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neural (N-) cadherin is a transmembrane protein within adherens junctions that mediates cell-cell adhesion. It has 5 modular extracellular domains (EC1-EC5) that bind 3 calcium ions between each of the modules. Calcium binding is required for dimerization. N-cadherin is involved in diverse processes including tissue morphogenesis, excitatory synapse formation and dynamics, and metastasis of cancer. During neurotransmission and tumorigenesis, fluctuations in extracellular pH occur, causing tissue acidosis with associated physiological consequences. Studies reported here aim to determine the effect of pH on the dimerization properties of EC1-EC2 N-cadherin in vitro. Since N-cadherin is an anionic protein, we hypothesized that acidification …

Finite Element Analysis Of Shear Resistant Mechanisms For Biolaminate Interfaces, Matthew Nelms Jan 2014

Finite Element Analysis Of Shear Resistant Mechanisms For Biolaminate Interfaces, Matthew Nelms

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Alligator gar possesses a flexible dermal armor consisting of overlapping ganoid scales. Each scale is a bilayer hydroxyapatite and collagen-based bio-laminate for protection against predation. The exoskeleton fish scale is comprised of a stiff outer ganoine layer, a characteristic "sawtooth" pattern at the interface and a compliant bone inner layer with all materials exhibiting a decreasing elastic modulus, yield strength and density through the thickness. Experiments on ganoid scales revealed properties such as damage mitigation and energy dissipation that are unique to biological dermal armor. The objective of this investigation is to develop a fundamental understanding of the stress …

Characterization Of Sugar Diversity In Floral And Extra-Floral Nectar From The Coastal Coral Tree (Erythrina Caffra Thunb.) In Southern California, Victor D. Carmona-Galindo, Kenny Morales, Renee Maser, Julius Doyle, Mera Gobrial Jan 2014

Characterization Of Sugar Diversity In Floral And Extra-Floral Nectar From The Coastal Coral Tree (Erythrina Caffra Thunb.) In Southern California, Victor D. Carmona-Galindo, Kenny Morales, Renee Maser, Julius Doyle, Mera Gobrial

Biology Faculty Works

The Coastal Coral Tree (Erythrina caffra Thunb.) produces floral nectar (FN) that serves to attract pollinating insects, but also secretes nectar from extra-floral (EFN) glands that serves to at-tract predatory insects, such as ants. While stu-dies on myrmecophytes (i.e. specialized plants that attract and interact with ants) have primarily focused on interspecific evaluations of EFN chemistry, the Coastal Coral tree offers an op-portunity to contrast intraspecific nectar chemi-stry with differing evolutionary and ecological functions. We hypothesized that the richness of (molecular) sugar species, relative concentra-tions, and diversity of sugars in FN and foliar EFN would diverge due to differences in …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy has been applied to the problem of differentiating four genotypes of durum wheat: ‘waxy’, Wx A1 null null, wx-B1 null and wild type. The test data consisted of 95 NIR reflectance spectra of wheat samples obtained from a USDA-ARSwheat breeding program. A two-step procedure for pattern recognition analysis of NIR spectral data wasemployed. First, thewavelet packet transform [14,15] was applied to the NIR reflectance data usingwavelet filters at different scales to extract and separate low-frequency signal components from high frequency noise components. By applying these filters, each reflectance spectrum was decomposed into wavelet coefficients that …

Phosphorus (P) loss from agricultural watersheds has long been a critical water quality problem, the control of which has been the focus of considerable research and investment. Preventing P loss depends on accurately representing the hydrological and chemical processes governing P mobilization and transport. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a watershed model commonly used to predict run-off and non-point source pollution transport. SWAT simulates run-off employing either the curve number (CN) or the Green and Ampt methods, both assume infiltration-excess run-off, although shallow soils underlain by a restricting layer commonly generate saturation-excess run-off from variable source areas …

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a polyploid, outcrossing grass species native to North America and has recently been recognized as a potential biofuel feedstock crop. Significant phenotypic variation including ploidy is present across the two primary ecotypes of switchgrass, referred to as upland and lowland switchgrass. The tetraploid switchgrass genome is approximately 1400 Mbp, split between two subgenomes, with significant repetitive sequence content limiting the efficiency of re-sequencing approaches for determining genome diversity. To characterize genetic diversity in upland and lowland switchgrass as a first step in linking genotype to phenotype, we designed an exome capture probe set based on transcript …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Future ecosystem properties of grasslands will be driven largely by belowground biomass responses to climate change, which are challenging to understand due to experimental and technical constraints. We used a multi-faceted approach to explore single and combined impacts of elevated CO2 and warming on root carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics in a temperate, semiarid, native grassland at the Prairie Heating and CO2 Enrichment experiment. To investigate the indirect, moisture mediated effects of elevated CO2, we included an irrigation treatment. We assessed root standing mass, morphology, residence time and seasonal appearance/disappearance of community-aggregated roots, as well as mass …

Llwr Techniques For Quantifying Potential Soil Compaction Consequences Of Crop Residue Removal, Joseph G. Benjamin, Douglas Karlen Jan 2014

Llwr Techniques For Quantifying Potential Soil Compaction Consequences Of Crop Residue Removal, Joseph G. Benjamin, Douglas Karlen

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Harvesting crop residues for bioenergy or bioproduct production may decrease soil organic matter (SOM) content, resulting in the degradation of soil physical properties and ultimately soil productivity. Using the least limiting water range (LLWR) to evaluate improvement or degradation of soil physical properties in response to SOM changes has generally been hampered by the extensive amount of data needed to parameterize limiting factor models for crop production. Our objective was to evaluate five pedotransfer functions to determine their effectiveness in predicting soil water holding capacity in response to different SOM levels. Similarly, two other pedotransfer functions were evaluated to determine …

The Response Of Lake Pontchartrain Fish Assemblages To Hurricanes Katrina And Rita, Martin T. O'Connell, Ann M.U. O'Connell, Christopher Schieble Jan 2014

The Response Of Lake Pontchartrain Fish Assemblages To Hurricanes Katrina And Rita, Martin T. O'Connell, Ann M.U. O'Connell, Christopher Schieble

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

To assess possible impacts on Lake Pontchartrain fishes from the 2005 hurricanes, we 45 compared trawl, beach seine, and gillnet collections taken before (2000-2003, 2005) and after 46 (2006-2009) to determine if significant assemblage changes occurred. We also compared basic 47 environmental variables to test for hurricane-related changes. Significant post-hurricane changes 48 in fish assemblages occurred in trawl (ANOSIM, R < 0.090, p < 0.05) and beach seine 49 (ANOSIM, R < 0.120, p < 0.05) collections across all seasons. Gillnet assemblages exhibited 50 changes in only one season (ANOSIM, R = 0.045, p < 0.05). These consistently low global R 51 values (all R < 0.120) across all gears suggest only minor compositional changes in species. 52 When peak abundance periods were compared for individual species, Gulf menhaden 53 (Brevoortia patronus) declined in trawl collections after the hurricanes (Friedman’s test, χ2 = 54 6.00, p = 0.014) but increased in gillnet collections (Friedman’s test, χ2=5.00, p = 0.025). 55 Hardhead catfish (Ariopsis felis) increased in trawl collections, but Gulf pipefish (Syngnathus 56 scovelli), naked gobies (Gobiosoma bosc), and rough silverside (Membras martinica) all 57 declined in beach seine samples and Atlantic croakers (M. undulatus), Spanish mackerel 58 (Scomberomorus maculatus), and sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius) all declined in gillnet 59 samples. In general, salinity increased and water clarity and dissolved oxygen decreased after 60 the hurricanes. While the overall composition of Lake Pontchartrain fish assemblages remains 61 stable, the significant decline of some species and changes in certain environmental variables are 62 cause for concern. Future monitoring should determine if all elements of this estuary will 63 recover from these impacts.

Common And Specific Impairments In Attention Functioning In Girls With Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion, Fragile X Or Turner Syndromes., A I. Quintero, Elliott A. Beaton, Danielle J. Harvey, Judith L. Ross, Tony J. Simon Jan 2014

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background:

Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS), fragile X syndrome (FXS), and Turner syndrome (TS) are complex and variable developmental syndromes caused by different genetic abnormalities; yet, they share similar cognitive impairments in the domains of numbers, space, and time. The atypical development of foundational neural networks that underpin the attentional system is thought to result in further impairments in higher-order cognitive functions. The current study investigates whether children with similar higher-order cognitive impairments but different genetic disorders also show similar impairments in alerting, orienting, and executive control of attention.

Methods:

Girls with 22q11.2DS, FXS, or TS and typically developing (TD) …

Photonic Filtering For Applications In Microwave Generation And Metrology, Marcus Bagnell Jan 2014

Photonic Filtering For Applications In Microwave Generation And Metrology, Marcus Bagnell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work uses the photonic filtering properties of Fabry-Perot etalons to show improvements in the electrical signals created upon photodetection of the optical signal. First, a method of delay measurement is described which uses multi-heterodyne detection to find correlations in white light signals at 20 km of delay to sub millimeter resolution. By filtering incoming white light with a Fabry-Perot etalon, the pseudo periodic signal is suitable for measurement by combining and photodetecting it with an optical frequency comb. In this way, optical data from a large bandwidth can be downconverted and sampled on low frequency electronics. Second, a high …

Evaluation Of A Secure Laptop Based Testing Program In An Undergraduate Nursing Program, Jinyuan Tao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This applied dissertation paper introduced a program evaluation of a secure laptop-based testing (SLBT) program, which was implemented from 2009 to 2014 in an undergraduate nursing program at a private institution in the southeastern region of the United States (US). Computerized testing is an old topic in the educational research field, but the instructor-made, laptop-based secure testing that utilizes learning management systems (LMS) for undergraduate nursing programs is a fairly new topic in the US. Traditionally, testing has been administered with paper and pencil in the undergraduate nursing programs in the US for security reasons. Recently, with different robust LMSs, …

Proportional reasoning instruction is prevalent in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schooling. The concept of proportional reasoning is used in a variety of contexts for solving real-world problems. One of these contexts is the solving of dosage calculation proportional problems in the healthcare field. On the job, nurses perform drug dosage calculations which carry fatal consequences. As a result, nursing students are required to meet minimum competencies in solving proportion problems. The goal of this research is to describe the lived experiences of nurses in connection to their use of proportional reasoning in order to impact instruction of the procedures used …

Comparison Of Second Order Conformal Symplectic Schemes With Linear Stability Analysis, Dwayne Floyd Jan 2014

Comparison Of Second Order Conformal Symplectic Schemes With Linear Stability Analysis, Dwayne Floyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerical methods for solving linearly damped Hamiltonian ordinary differential equations are analyzed and compared. The methods are constructed from the well-known Störmer-Verlet and implicit midpoint methods. The structure preservation properties of each method are shown analytically and numerically. Each method is shown to preserve a symplectic form up to a constant and are therefore conformal symplectic integrators, with each method shown to accurately preserve the rate of momentum dissipation. An analytical linear stability analysis is completed for each method, establishing thresholds between the value of the damping coefficient and the step-size that ensure stability. The methods are all second order …

Parity-Time And Supersymmetry In Optics, Mohammad Ali Miri Jan 2014

Parity-Time And Supersymmetry In Optics, Mohammad Ali Miri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Symmetry plays a crucial role in exploring the laws of nature. By exploiting some of the underlying analogies between the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics and that of electrodynamics, in this dissertation we show that optics can provide a fertile ground for studying, observing, and utilizing some of the peculiar symmetries that are currently out of reach in other areas of physics. In particular, in this work, we investigate two important classes of symmetries, parity-time symmetry (PT) and supersymmetry (SUSY), within the context of classical optics. The presence of PT symmetry can lead to entirely real spectra in non-Hermitian systems. …

Robust Regression Methods For Massively Decayed Intelligence Data, Akiva Joachim Lorenz Jan 2014

Robust Regression Methods For Massively Decayed Intelligence Data, Akiva Joachim Lorenz

Wayne State University Dissertations

Homeland Security, sponsored by governmental initiatives, has become a vibrant academic research field. However, most efforts were placed with the recognition of threats (e.g. theory) and response options. Less effort was placed in the analysis of the collected data through statistical modeling. In a field that collects more than 20 terabyte of information per minute though diverse overt and covert means and indexes it for future research, understanding how different statistical models behave when it comes to massively decayed data is of vital importance.

Using Monte Carlo methods, three regression techniques (ordinary least squares, least-trimmed, and maximum likelihood) were tested …
