'Like Iron To A Magnet': Moses Hayim Luzzatto's Quest For Providence, David Sclar
'Like Iron To A Magnet': Moses Hayim Luzzatto's Quest For Providence, David Sclar
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707-1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. Using unpublished archival documents and manuscripts, as well as rare printed books, I seek to reconcile the seemingly incompatible aspects of Luzzatto as 'heretic' and 'hero.'
Chapter one sets the tone for the dissertation by analyzing the original version of …
Infrastructure, Production, And Archive: American And Japanese Video Art Production Of 1960s And 1970s, Ann Atsuko Adachi
Infrastructure, Production, And Archive: American And Japanese Video Art Production Of 1960s And 1970s, Ann Atsuko Adachi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Focusing a study on the infrastructure of artistic production and maintenance opens a space in which to examine the relationship between artistic inspiration and knowledge making, the occurrences and the writing of its history. In the case of the comparative study of the emergence of Japanese and American video art, common artistic technique employed may indicate motivations derived from the technical possibility of the video medium, while the study of infrastructure demonstrates how large-scale funding, formation of archives, the establishment of systems of distribution and channels of education affect the emergence and development of video art as a genre. This …
The Status Of Neonatal Hearing Screening In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review, David Engelman
The Status Of Neonatal Hearing Screening In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review, David Engelman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Late identification of hearing loss can lead to speech and language delays, as well as social and academic difficulties. Neonatal hearing screening has reduced the age of identification of hearing loss in many developed countries. However, the practice is limited or non-existent in much of the developing world, such as sub-Saharan Africa. This systematic review used currently available literature to determine the status of neonatal hearing screening programs in sub-Saharan Africa and to develop a model program for the region. Results suggested a lack of neonatal hearing screening services in sub-Saharan Africa, stressing the need for more pilot hearing screening …

Displacing The Displaced: Challenging The International Framework For Palestinian Refugees In Light Of The Syria Crisis, Jasmin Fritzsche
Displacing The Displaced: Challenging The International Framework For Palestinian Refugees In Light Of The Syria Crisis, Jasmin Fritzsche
Faculty Journal Articles
In 1948 approximately 750,000 Palestinians were displaced for the first time. As of 2014, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) counts over 5 million Palestine refugees. Many of those refugees no longer reside in their first country of asylum but have been repeatedly displaced following expulsions, political unrest and conflicts in host countries. In 2011, fighting broke out in Syria, creating over three million refugees fleeing mainly to surrounding Arab countries such as Lebanon and Jordan. Alongside Syrian citizens affected by the conflict is a population of about half a million …

The Circulation Network Of East Asian Television Dramas In Indonesia: Television And Pirated Dvds As Intermediaries, Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan
The Circulation Network Of East Asian Television Dramas In Indonesia: Television And Pirated Dvds As Intermediaries, Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan
JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
East Asian television dramas from Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have become a significant part of the cultural globalization process in the Indonesian mediascapes since the 1990s. The Indonesian cultural, political and social specificities have created significant distinctions on how these television dramas reconstruct the shared imagination of (East) Asia in comparison with how it is in other locales. The research findings have extended the discussion of geocultural/linguistic regions, which argues that the success of a television drama in one region, for example telenovelas in Latin America, is affected by a similar cultural and linguistic background. It echoes that the …

Effects Of Perceived Privacy Protection: Does Reading Privacy Notices Matter?, Xiaojing Sheng, Penny M. Simpson
Marketing Faculty Publications
Many consumers do not read privacy notices despite the fact that websites post privacy notices to address consumers' long-standing concerns about privacy protection on the internet. To understand why consumers do not read privacy notices and the impact of reading (or not reading) privacy notices on the found effect of privacy notices, data were collected from 137 readers of privacy notices and 97 non-readers of privacy notices. This research's test of the moderating effects of reading (or not reading) privacy notices found that perceived privacy protection positively affected trust and negatively affected perceived information risk and that the negative effect …
The Impact Of Empire On Native American Women And Mothers, Rebecca J.M. Yowan
The Impact Of Empire On Native American Women And Mothers, Rebecca J.M. Yowan
Student Publications
No one doubts that the colonizing forces of the dominant, Euro-American culture have had an extreme and enduring impact on Native American cultures. However, the specific impact that empire has had on Native American women is a salient topic for research. Drawing on examples of environmental degradation, stolen agency, and psychological suffering, this essay illustrates the numerous and distressing effects that the philosophy and practice of empire have had and continue to have on Native American women.
Making The Invisible Heard: German-Kurdish Cultural Organizations And Transnational Networks, Drew A. Hoffman
Making The Invisible Heard: German-Kurdish Cultural Organizations And Transnational Networks, Drew A. Hoffman
Student Publications
The increasing corpus of theoretical literature on transnationalism remains to be applied to many of the transnational migrant communities which have developed since the advent of modern globalization. This literary essay seeks to provide a perspective on the German-Kurdish community in Berlin, and how they fit into the larger European and Kurdish contexts. It illustrates the convergence of opportunities and disadvantages that German-Kurds face in Berlin, while also investigating what it means to be a Berliner-Kurd. The literary essay accordingly explores the role of language, cultural organizations, and regional networks. In doing so, it is hoped that topics about German-Kurds …
“In Light Of Real Alternatives”: Negotiations Of Fertility And Motherhood In Morocco And Oman, Victoria E. Mohr
“In Light Of Real Alternatives”: Negotiations Of Fertility And Motherhood In Morocco And Oman, Victoria E. Mohr
Student Publications
Many states in the Arab world have undertaken wide-ranging family planning polices in the last two decades in an effort to curb high fertility rates. Oman and Morocco are two such countries, and their policies have had significantly different results. Morocco experienced a swift drop in fertility rates, whereas Oman’s fertility has declined much more slowly over several decades. Many point to the more conservative religious and cultural context of Oman for their high fertility rates, however economics and the state of biomedical health care often present a more compelling argument for the distinct differences between Omani and Moroccan family …

Remedies For Non-Citizens Under Provincial Nominee Programs: Judicial Review And Fiduciary Relationships, Delphine Nakache, Catherine Blanchard
Remedies For Non-Citizens Under Provincial Nominee Programs: Judicial Review And Fiduciary Relationships, Delphine Nakache, Catherine Blanchard
Dalhousie Law Journal
In Canada, more and more people get permanent residency under Provincial and Territorial Nominee Programs (PTNPs). Despite this new reality, there is today no detailed examination of the consequences of PTNPs for immigrants' rights and protections. In this paper, we seek to fill this gap. As we show, PTNPs have no statutory basis and officials who administer these programs do not exercise statutory authority of any kind. An alternative would be that these programs become "law"; then the decisions made under them would bejudicially reviewable for conformity with that law. However, it is unlikely to happen because "flexibility" is seen …
Showing Up: Eyewitness-Identification Requirements In Bosnia And Herzegovina: A Comparative Case Study, Carrie Leonetti
Showing Up: Eyewitness-Identification Requirements In Bosnia And Herzegovina: A Comparative Case Study, Carrie Leonetti
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
Almost all jurisdictions in the United States, at least under some circumstances, permit the highly suggestive procedure of a "showup"- in essence, a one-person lineup containing only the suspect. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the other hand, identifications resulting from showups are categorically prohibited, even though requiring full lineups in all cases inevitably causes relative delays in police investigations. This case study explores that crucial difference between the two systems and attempts to assess what, if anything, the United States could learn from the Bosnian requirement that eyewitnesses always be shown fillers, in addition to the suspect, when being asked …
Entity Linking On Microblogs With Spatial And Temporal Signals, Yuan Fang, Ming-Wei Chang
Entity Linking On Microblogs With Spatial And Temporal Signals, Yuan Fang, Ming-Wei Chang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Microblogs present an excellent opportunity for monitoring and analyzing world happenings. Given that words are often ambiguous, entity linking becomes a crucial step towards understanding microblogs. In this paper, we re-examine the problem of entity linking on microblogs. We first observe that spatiotemporal (i.e., spatial and temporal) signals play a key role, but they are not utilized in existing approaches. Thus, we propose a novel entity linking framework that incorporates spatiotemporal signals through a weakly supervised process. Using entity annotations1 on real-world data, our experiments show that the spatiotemporal model improves F1 by more than 10 points over existing systems. …

'Oh, Man, I’M Nowhere': Ralph Ellison And The Psychospatial Terrain Of Mid-Century Harlem, Walter Bosse
'Oh, Man, I’M Nowhere': Ralph Ellison And The Psychospatial Terrain Of Mid-Century Harlem, Walter Bosse
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article explores the theoretical contours of Ralph Ellison's 1948 essay, "Harlem Is Nowhere." I argue that Ellison's text theorizes space in a way that enables resistance against the geopolitical constraints of urban black modernity. In his essay, Ellison explores the underground halls of the Lafargue Psychiatric Clinic in Harlem - "the only center in the city wherein both Negroes and whites may receive extended psychiatric care" (Ellison 295). His study thus situates racial politics within a specific institutional milieu. At Lafargue, Ellison works as a kind of ethnographer, and records that the utterance "I'm nowhere" was commonly used by …

In Germany, All Trains Go From Left To Right, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
In Germany, all trains go from left to right. Things were different during my grandfather's time: for him, trains would go from right to left, but that's because he was living in a completely different world. When my grandfather was eighteen he decided to kill the Romanian King. "Why would there still be a king in Romania when the entire world was moving forward towards democracy?" he would ask. My grandfather was a strange person. You wonder why he was actually so concerned about the Romanian king while he was living in his native Germany, not even eighteen …

Game Studies Round Table, Judd Ethan Ruggill, Tobias Conradi, Steven Conway, Ken S. Mcallister, Rolf F. Nohr, Theo Röhle
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
This conversation began as a salon that was convened in February 2014, just after the 35th annual conference of the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association (SWPACA). The theme for the salon was localism, with a principal focus on how the field of game studies is arrayed across countries, institutions, and time. The participants spanned the experiential spectrum from post doctoral researcher to dean, and represented three of the most developed regions in game studies and the industry it analyzes: Europe (Germany), Australia, and the U.S. The questions were prepared in advance by Ken McAllister and Judd Ruggill, who moderated …
The Transfenestrational Imaginary: Periodizing Vineland’S Sixties, Johanna Isaacson
The Transfenestrational Imaginary: Periodizing Vineland’S Sixties, Johanna Isaacson
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
"The Transfenestrational Imaginary: Periodizing Vineland's Sixties" argues that the representational strategy in Vineland has much in common with Fredric Jameson's sixties periodization strategy, and offers a sustained analogy between narrative strategy and historiography. I suggest that Vineland is most productively seen as a continuation of the anti-literary genres of the sixties underground press and manifesto forms, genres that were necessarily temporary and politicized, and became opaque when separated from the context of active political social movements. The paper focuses on two key figures in the novel, Frenesi Gates and Zoyd Wheeler, and argues that the two are associated with …

Remapping The Present: Dave Eggers's Spatial Virtuality And The Condition Of Literature, Nathan Frank
Remapping The Present: Dave Eggers's Spatial Virtuality And The Condition Of Literature, Nathan Frank
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Piggy-backing on the spatial turn in literary studies, this paper "remaps the present" by making a parallel spatial turn in virtual theory. Surveying and synthesizing the many invaluable contributions to conceptualizing virtuality - from those of Bergson and Deleuze through to those of Daniel Downes and Brian Massumi - a "spatial virtuality" accounts for an increasing focus on digitization without dismissing the previous (and, at times, prescient) preoccupations with temporal virtualities. But I also frame spatial virtuality in terms of N. Katherine Hayles' compelling work in which virtuality is a condition. Within such a framework, many things happen, not the …
Including Children With Disabilities In Mainstream Education: An Exploration Of The Challenges And Considerations For Parents And Primary School Teachers, Gail Ferguson
Dissertations
Recent decades have seen children’s rights and the rights of persons with disabilities come to the fore. Current policy emphasis on inclusive education means that more children with disabilities and special educational needs are being placed in mainstream education instead of special schools, as was traditionally the case. The aim of this study was to explore the area of inclusion in education, from the perspective of primary school teachers and parents of children with intellectual disabilities. A key objective was to determine if the reality of including children with disabilities in mainstream settings corresponded with the policy on inclusion.

Retroactivity At The Federal Circuit, David L. Schwartz
Retroactivity At The Federal Circuit, David L. Schwartz
Indiana Law Journal
A substantial subset of patent opinions from the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals functions in a wholly different manner from ordinary judicial opinions: they have strong retroactive effects with weak prospective effects. All Federal Circuit opinions have strong retroactive effects because issued patents and pending applications rarely can be modified. The Federal Circuit decisions apply in full to these patents and applications, even though they were prepared without the benefit of the rulings. In contrast, many of these opinions have almost no prospective effects. Patent law provides tremendous linguistic flexibility to patent drafters, which can be used to avoid the …

In The Mind's Eye: Visual Lessons For Law Students, Brian A. Glassman
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
This article shows how to use works of art to demonstrate essential components of effective legal writing. Part I discusses the learning theory under pinning the use of visual lessons. Part II describes the lessons themselves. Part III explains the benefits--both direct and indirect--that result from using visual lessons to teach law and summarizes student responses to the use of these lessons in first-year legal writing. The conclusion suggests ways in which this technique might be extended and adapted to teach not only legal writing but also other law school courses.
