The Influence Of Possible Selves On Global Citizenship Identification, Marion E. Blake, Stephen Reysen
The Influence Of Possible Selves On Global Citizenship Identification, Marion E. Blake, Stephen Reysen
Faculty Publications
We examined the influence of a ‘possible self’ activity on antecedents, identification, and outcomes of global citizenship. Participants wrote about either hoped-for selves as active global citizens, feared selves as inactive global citizens, or a typical day (control) and then answered questions to gauge their global citizen identification. Results show that the saliency of a feared self as an inactive global citizen led to greater identification with the global citizen identity. A structural equation model shows that feared self (vs hoped-for self) predicted greater global citizenship identification, through the perception of one’s normative environment as prescribing a global citizen identity …

Max Scheler's Critical Theory: The Idea Of Critical Phenomenology, Eric J. Mohr
Max Scheler's Critical Theory: The Idea Of Critical Phenomenology, Eric J. Mohr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work explores the way core elements of phenomenology map on to the critical theory program in order to demonstrate phenomenology's relevance for ideology critique. "Critical phenomenology" means putting the findings of phenomenology to work for the sake of social critique. I argue that phenomenology gains a critical edge precisely where many critical theorists suggest phenomenology withdraws from a critical function: on the basis of their theory of intuition. While Adorno takes phenomenological intuition to be another version of identity philosophy, he overlooks the significance of the way in which phenomenological givenness is incommensurable with, and at best only symbolized …
Pound's Progress: The Vortextual Evolution Of Imagism And Its Poetic Image, Justin Kishbaugh
Pound's Progress: The Vortextual Evolution Of Imagism And Its Poetic Image, Justin Kishbaugh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although previous Imagist scholarship considers its subject from chronological, technical, and historical viewpoints, rarely does it combine two-let alone all three-of those perspectives. Undoubtedly, each of those critical lenses contributes to the overall understanding of Imagism. Yet, by not weaving the technique and theory of Imagism into a linear account of its development, those studies tend to view those aspects of Imagism as if they were discrete and stable entities. To counteract that trend, this dissertation argues that Pound's Imagist program-due to the ambiguity and developing definitions of several of its key terms-allowed the Imagist poets to produce a richly …
Bitcoin, The Law And Emerging Public Policy: Towards A 21st Century Regulatory Scheme, Gregory M. Karch
Bitcoin, The Law And Emerging Public Policy: Towards A 21st Century Regulatory Scheme, Gregory M. Karch
Florida A & M University Law Review
Bitcoin is the world's first decentralized digital currency. According to Lawrence Lessig, cryptography is "the most important technological breakthrough in the last one thousand years" and will be transformative. Bitcoin, capitalizing on cryptography, is a revolutionary digital currency protocol--a software system capable of tracking financial transactions without the need for a third party intermediary. The Bitcoin software is a "community-driven open source project released under an MIT license.”
This paper begins by briefly reviewing the mechanics of Bitcoin in Section I. Section II then surveys the rapidly expanding uses of Bitcoin, as well as the emerging application of Bitcoin. Since …

Occupational Therapy Capstones
The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a holistic guide that could be provided by occupational therapists (OTs) to caregivers of individuals with muscular dystrophy (MD). A comprehensive literature review was conducted on the impact that caregiving for individuals with MD has on quality of life, stress management and mental health. The review of literature also explored caregivers’ access to resources and common difficulties experienced. The literature revealed that there have been recent advances in medical fields which have led to an increased lifespan for individuals with MD to an average age of 27 years old (Eagle et …
Toward A Kairos Of Library Instruction, Emily Drabinski
Toward A Kairos Of Library Instruction, Emily Drabinski
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
Information literacy instruction in libraries is organized by the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. Currently under revision, these Standards define a set of external, abstract learning objectives that have been productive of a teaching role for librarians. Simultaneously, the Standards have generated a substantial critical literature that contests the objectives as a “Procrustean bed” that distracts from the particular teaching and learning contexts. This paper offers an alternative organizing heuristic for instruction in libraries. Kairos is an ancient Greek theory of time married to measure. Used by both Plato and the Sophists to understand the emergence of truth from context, kairos …
Growing Together Separately: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Individualism In An Alternative Educational Setting, Jessica L. Warren
Growing Together Separately: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Individualism In An Alternative Educational Setting, Jessica L. Warren
Scripps Senior Theses
Alternative educational settings that attempt to challenge Individualism are pervaded by Individualizing influences from the larger school system. This thesis examines the influences of Individualism in a school garden program at a Southern California continuation high school. Program members included high school students, college student interns, and two co-directors. Research was conducted during the spring semester of 2014. By providing an analysis of the Individualizing and non-Individualizing influences present in the program and the ways in which these influences interacted to inform the program structure and program members’ experiences and understandings, my thesis sheds new light on the complex ways …

Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis contemplates Walt Whitman's role in the lives of 19th and 20th century women writers and his significance to early American feminism. I consider the ways women inspired him to develop pro-feminist ideas about maternity, womanhood, and female liberation.
Examining The Relationship Between Reading Ability And Reading Self-Concept In Differing Socio-Economic Schools, Lily Hall
Open Access Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between reading performance and reading self-concept for a sample of fifth-grade students attending schools with higher and lower socio-economic status (SES). Fifth-grade students (N=102) from one higher and two lower SES schools were assessed on five different measures: three standardized reading measures including word recognition, decoding, and passage comprehension tasks, one standardized receptive vocabulary test, and one reading selfconcept scale. Results showed significant differences between groups on the word recognition, passage comprehension, and vocabulary knowledge measures, with students of the higher SES cohort performing better on these measures than did …

An Intensive Total Speech Treatment Using Principles Of Motor Learning In An Individual With Dysarthria, Octavia C. Miller
Open Access Master's Theses
Objective: Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder that is characterized by weak, slow, and imprecise movements. Previous research has shown that behavioral treatment can improve speech characteristics and have a positive impact on the intelligibility of people with dysarthria; however, data about the impact of specific treatment approaches is lacking. The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of a novel behavioral speech treatment that incorporates principles of motor learning and its impact on communication characteristics of an individual with spastic dysarthria secondary to a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Method: This study used a single subject …

Hiatus Resolution In Tariana Pronominal Prefixation, Kate Hohenstein
Hiatus Resolution In Tariana Pronominal Prefixation, Kate Hohenstein
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis provides an Optimality Theory (OT) analysis (Prince and Smolensky 1993, McCarthy and Prince 1995) of vowel alternations that occur upon affixation across pronominal prefix-verb root boundaries in Tariana (North Arawak; Colombia/Brazil). Previously, the vowel alternations observed in these environments have been described in terms of linear analysis, as independently-motivated processes under the cover term vowel fusion (Aikhenvald 2003). I propose that the vowel alternations occur as instruments of hiatus resolution. Three alternations, or hiatus resolution strategies, are observable in Tariana pronominal prefix-verb root affixation: no change (or diphthong formation), coalescence, and vowel elision. I propose that sonority sequencing …

Chapter one is a biography focusing on the most impactful moments in Milhaud's career. The chapter takes the reader through his early years, education, travels to Brazil, connection with Les Six, career highlights, and years as a professor. The second chapter serves as an introduction to the compositional elements found in Milhaud's vocal works. After establishing the recurring techniques, …

A Treatise On The Assault On Language Sovereignty In The United States: History, Education, And Implications For Policy, Annie Thornburg Oakes
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This dissertation examines the revitalization of endangered Indigenous languages in the United States in relation to the concept of sovereignty. I investigate historical reasons for language destruction in the United States as a means of understanding the mechanism used in conquest and the long-range effects on the educational system. I use the term "language sovereignty" to reflect the right of tribal organizations in the US to assert the use of traditional languages as a means of self-identifying as distinct sovereign nations. I draw from initiatives in Hawaii and Europe to demonstrate how regional and linguistic minority languages have been revitalized …

Use Of Translation In The Writings Of International Students Learning English In Malaysia / Soheila Mahernia, Soheila Mahernia
Student Works (2010-2019)
There are increasing numbers of international students coming to Malaysia every year. One of the problems they face while they are learning English in ESL classrooms is to know whether it is beneficial or not for them to use their native language and translation as a tool for learning the second language. Second language researchers have also currently started to re-evaluate the role of translation and first language (L1) in ESL classrooms. This research was based primarily on an examination of direct and indirect (translated) essay writing in English by 25 college students from different Russian speaking countries having pre …

Theme And Thematic Progression Of Malaysian Higher Education Advertorials / Nurul Amilin Binti Abu Talib, Nurul Amilin Abu Talib
Student Works (2010-2019)
Systemic Functional Grammar is an approach which has been applied in numerous fields and genres (Thompson, 1996; Bloor & Bloor, 2004) and is considered a significant tool in exploring different discourses (Fairclough, 2001; Bloor & Bloor, 2004). The textual metafunction, especially, is useful as it organises meaning and message in a cohesive manner. Hence, the main objective of this study is to look at the types of theme and thematic progression patterns found in the Malaysian advertorials of higher education. In this study, the Unmarked topical theme consisting of noun phrases was found to be the most prominent theme type. …

Representation Of Transsexuals In Malaysian English Print Media / Thiba A/P Naraina Chetty, Thiba Naraina Chetty
Student Works (2010-2019)
The current study, in combining Butler’s (1999) performativity theory and Reisigl and Wodak’s (2009) discourse-historical approach, attempts to ascertain the discursive practices that help shape and construct the identities of Malaysian transsexuals. The study examines editorial and opinion editorials that were published in two English print media in Malaysia to understand the way argumentation schemes and linguistic means are deployed in the construction of transsexuals’ identity. The analysis of the data depicts that the print media have generally intensified the representation of transsexuals as heavily discriminated group through the use of negative and emotionally charged language. Although the articles were …

An Analysis Of Theta Role Of Verbs In Hausa / Ali Umar Muhammad, Ali Umar Muhammad
Student Works (2010-2019)
Hausa is a native language of an ethnic group who call themselves Hausawa. The Hausas are basically the dominant ethnic group in an area known as the Hausa land in Nigeria, some part of Niger, and other African countries. It is evident that various researchers have provided some extensive descriptions of the grammar of the language, but thematic relation, which is one of the important theories in syntax within Generative Grammar, appeared to be neglected, as none of the available literature discussed the theta role using Radford‟s theory. Theta role is precisely the semantic relationship between the verb and arguments. …

Macro And Microcontextual Taboo Words In Iranian Pre And Post Revolution Movies / Zahra Samadi, Zahra Samadi
Student Works (2010-2019)
Taboo words are the inseparable parts of language. It has been proved that this phenomenon exists in all languages including Farsi. Taboo words change over time. Some words, which were considered once taboo in the past, do not carry any “tabooness” at present. Hence, in an attempt to investigate the changes of taboo words/expressions in Farsi language, a research was conducted. This study compares the taboo words used by characters in movies. These characters portray lower class and middle class members of Iranian society. Two Iranian movies produced before and after the revolution (1979) in Iran are chosen to conduct …

A Study Of Polysemy On Chinese Body-Part Terms Tou ‘Head’ And Yan ‘Eye’ : A Cognitive Approach / Lv Yetong, Yetong Lv
Student Works (2010-2019)
Polysemy, or the association of two or more related meanings with a single linguistic form (Taylor, 1995, p.99), is ubiquitous in language and receives attention from many linguistic disciplines. Cognitive linguists interpret the meanings of polysemous words based on conventional conceptual structures, as the identification of polysemy involves the conceptualization of everyday life. Based on the principles of cognitive linguistics, this study analyzes polysemy through an in-depth examination of Chinese body-part terms, namely tou „head‟ and yan „eye‟, in order to unfold the internal relationships among the meanings of polysemous words. According to the findings, first, the original or literal …
