“I Am An Island. I Am The Whole World:” Performance And The Formation Of Identity In Contemporary Monologue Drama, Emily Mercedes Rich
“I Am An Island. I Am The Whole World:” Performance And The Formation Of Identity In Contemporary Monologue Drama, Emily Mercedes Rich
Theses & ETDs
This thesis studies the formation of identity in contemporary monologue drama through the close reading of Krapp’s Last Tape by Samuel Beckett, Molly Sweeney by Brian Friel, Night Just Before the Forests by Bernard-Marie Koltès, Howie the Rookie by Mark O’Rowe, Thom Pain (based on nothing) by Will Eno, and 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane. The monologue form is separated into three categories that serve identity formation: audience, language, and embodiment. The second two-thirds of the thesis consists of an original monologue play, Post No Bills and a discussion of its performance. A copy of that performance is included on …
From Behind The Mirror: Publishing The Works Of Anaïs Nin, Elizabeth Claire Sheehey
From Behind The Mirror: Publishing The Works Of Anaïs Nin, Elizabeth Claire Sheehey
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the unique position of the literary persona of Anaïs Nin, a persona produced in her writing through the tension between autobiography and fiction. If Nin is best known for her erotic fiction, her reputation reflects the careful construction of her autobiographical voice in her diaries. My first chapter argues that the editing decisions made in the publication of Nin’s Childhood Diaries, some 40 years after their writing, shape the “Anaïs” of its pages toward the project and persona that brought her (and her editors) critical and financial success. My second chapter examines Nin’s erotic fiction in light …
A Fusion Of Mediums And Reversing Ekphrasis: Using Photography To Respond To The Poetry Of George Oppen, Taylor Meredith
A Fusion Of Mediums And Reversing Ekphrasis: Using Photography To Respond To The Poetry Of George Oppen, Taylor Meredith
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines and reverses the creative practice of ekphrasis in order to argue for the fusion of artistic mediums. This is done, in part, by responding to the poetry of George Oppen through original photography. By translating Oppen‟s poetry into a series of corresponding photographs, I produce my own examples to support the claim that textual ideas and imagery can be applied to the visual arts. I also support this claim by referencing several well-known writers and visual artists who have employed the use of ekphrasis and created works of art that significantly contributed to major artistic movements. This …
Ritual And Healing: Explorations Of The Placebo Phenomenon And Peruvian Curanderismo In Iquitos, Peru, Victoria Elizabeth Jara
Ritual And Healing: Explorations Of The Placebo Phenomenon And Peruvian Curanderismo In Iquitos, Peru, Victoria Elizabeth Jara
Theses & ETDs
Placebo effects can be used to explain the effectiveness of ritual healing. The evidence supporting the effectiveness of rituals and positive affective responses are due to neurobiological studies on placebo effects that point to the activation of the descending opioid and dopaminergic neural systems. Using Kaptchuk’s (2011) proposal of a ritual approach to understand the placebo phenomenon, I argue that placebo ritual theory can help explain how language, culture and metaphor affect physiological processes. Research for this thesis took place in Iquitos, Peru—the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon. Qualitative research was performed using semi-structured interviews and participant-observations. Healers and …
Cómo Ser Latino En Los Estados Unidos: The Factors Influencing Ethnic Identity Choices Among Second Generation Latinos, Farrell A. Ocasio
Cómo Ser Latino En Los Estados Unidos: The Factors Influencing Ethnic Identity Choices Among Second Generation Latinos, Farrell A. Ocasio
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis I examine the social and structural factors that influence second generation Latinos in the formation of their ethnic identities. I also look at the extent to which the experiences of contemporary second generation immigrants correspond with what previous scholars have written on the subject. By conducting interviews with sixteen second generation Latinos about their ethnic identity, I was able to identify some of the factors that they felt were significant in shaping their sense of cultural connection. While eight factors were identified as significant, I found that in order to understand why each factor is more or …
Mental Toughness, Personality, And Benefit Finding, Maiah Taylor
Mental Toughness, Personality, And Benefit Finding, Maiah Taylor
Theses & ETDs
Over the past decades, mental toughness research has become more prevalent but has yet to include non-athletes. The present study was intended to evaluate mental toughness, personality, and benefit finding abilities in non-athletes. The sample consisted of 86 participants, 16 male, 58 female, 5 non-binary, and 7 who did not respond ranging in age from 18 to 69 years (M=22). The findings are discussed in the context of how mental toughness associated with personality, benefit finding and gender. A series of correlations and t-tests were conducted resulting in significant findings regarding the personality profile of those considered to be mentally …
Eyes, Ears And Guesswork: Creating Orthographic And Phonological Measures Of Vocabulary Breadth For Beginning And Advanced Spanish And Mandarin Chinese Second-Language Learners, Robert Matthew Klinkel
Eyes, Ears And Guesswork: Creating Orthographic And Phonological Measures Of Vocabulary Breadth For Beginning And Advanced Spanish And Mandarin Chinese Second-Language Learners, Robert Matthew Klinkel
Theses & ETDs
Spanish is the most studied language in the U.S., and the study of Mandarin Chinese is increasing the most rapidly. Efficient measures of vocabulary acquisition, although available in other languages, are not readily available in Spanish and Chinese. Vocabulary measures are important because they help to assess learners’ receptive vocabulary breadth, or size, as well as to predict overall language ability. The X_Lex and A_Lex are standard measures of vocabulary breadth that assess two dimensions of vocabulary knowledge: the X_Lex measures orthographic, or reading knowledge, while the A_Lex measures phonological, or listening knowledge. Thus, the X_Lex better predicts reading and …
Representations Of Agency And Communion In Narratives About The Self Versus Gendered Others, Taylor S. Parker
Representations Of Agency And Communion In Narratives About The Self Versus Gendered Others, Taylor S. Parker
Theses & ETDs
This study examined differences in children’s representations of agency (exerting influence to achieve desired outcomes) and communion (feelings of social belongingness) in narratives about the self versus gendered others. These themes were coded for in four different narratives (one about the self, as well as one each about a masculine, feminine, and androgynous puppet) generated by 20 children. Though data were not analyzed directly between gender conditions, differences in correlational patterns between girls and boys for themes and age emerged. For girls, descriptions of dynamic physical activity decreased with age in importance as well as propensity, and descriptions of physical …
Describing The Spoken Discourse Practices Of Second And Third Grade Classroom Teachers In Appalachia, Natasha Janel Scott
Describing The Spoken Discourse Practices Of Second And Third Grade Classroom Teachers In Appalachia, Natasha Janel Scott
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In order to meet the academic demands of the school system, school-aged children must be able to understand the language (discourse) of their teachers and the curricular expectations for verbal expression. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), working within the schools, need to identify and include in their therapy planning the learning supports that will contribute to students’ classroom success. One useful data-set for this planning is knowledge of the types and levels of discourse used and expected by the classroom teacher. The purpose of this study was to examine the spoken discourse practices of second and third grade teachers in Appalachia. By …

United States Public Health Resources
In June of 2012, representatives from more than 80 countries promulgated a Child Survival Call to Action, which called for reducing child mortality to 20 or fewer child deaths per 1,000 live births in every country by 2035. To address the problem of ending preventable child deaths, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the United Nations Children’s Fund convened, on June 3–4, 2013, an Evidence Summit on Enhancing Child Survival and Development in Lower- and Middle-Income Countries by Achieving Population-Level Behavior Change. Six evidence review teams were established on different topics related to child survival and healthy development to …

The New Kindergarten: Developmentally Appropriate Practice And Academic Rigor, Rebecca Marshall
The New Kindergarten: Developmentally Appropriate Practice And Academic Rigor, Rebecca Marshall
Theses and Graduate Projects
Kindergarten has changed drastically since it was introduced to the United States in the 1850s. Recent changes in curriculum and government involvement in educational policy such as the No Child Left Behind Act lead to increased rigor in Kindergarten classrooms. Among other curricular expectations, Kindergarteners are expected to be strong readers at the end of the year. In order to determine how teachers perceive these changes and how they affect their classrooms, 91 teachers were surveyed from across the state of Minnesota. Teachers were asked about the basic demographics and structure of their classroom as well as their familiarity with …
Trauma Resource Nurse: A Leadership Role In A Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center, Claudia Hines
Trauma Resource Nurse: A Leadership Role In A Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center, Claudia Hines
Theses and Graduate Projects
Nurses in a pediatric emergency department are accustomed to caring for critically ill and injured children. Pediatric trauma requires nurses to have a high level of expertise. However, along with this expertise, nurses need to demonstrate strong leadership skills to be an effective partner in the trauma team. Attaining a pediatric level I trauma designation by the American College of Surgeons generated uncertainty in emergency nurses' perceptions of their ability to care for trauma patients. Emergency departments within trauma centers have recognized the need for specialized nursing programs or nursing roles in the care of trauma. Nursing leadership competencies, interprofessional …
Vaccinating Vulnerable Populations, Paula B. Mcnabb
Vaccinating Vulnerable Populations, Paula B. Mcnabb
Theses and Graduate Projects
Influenza vaccination rates for all minority groups in Minnesota are lower than rates for Caucasians of all age groups. Since 2006, a collaborative partnership called Minnesota Immunization Networking Initiative (MINI) has provided free influenza vaccinations in convenient and trusted community settings throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota in an attempt to address this health disparity. The literature highlights a number of barriers that negatively influence individuals' choices regarding acceptance of influenza vaccination but also highlights motivators, facilitators and processes that positively impact these decisions. Thirteen focus group interviews were conducted with individuals from the Ethiopian, Latino, Native American …
The Secrets Of Alorese ‘Silk’ Yarn: Kolon Susu, Triangle Trade And Underwater Women In Eastern Indonesia1, Emilie Wellfelt
The Secrets Of Alorese ‘Silk’ Yarn: Kolon Susu, Triangle Trade And Underwater Women In Eastern Indonesia1, Emilie Wellfelt
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Eastern Indonesia is known for a great variety of textiles. One part of the region that has been largely overlooked in the literature is textiles of the Alor archipelago. However, the literature does recognise and speculate about the unusual silky character of some Alorese cloths that have entered Western museum collections. Based on fieldwork among weavers in the village Uma Pura, situated on a small island in the Pantar strait, this paper reveals the secret behind the characteristic shiny finish of the ‘silk’ sarongs from Alor. Ruled by necessity rather than choice weavers used to mix cotton with fibres from …

The purpose of this paper is to explore anxieties inherent in students which can hinder the optimal use of library resources, services, and facilities. The instruments used were the Malay translated versions of LAS, FLCAS, and PRCA-24. The study was carried out among final year undergraduates at a public university in Malaysia. The findings revealed that communication anxiety in students correlated with Library Staff Barriers, Library Services Barriers, Library Resources Barriers, Affective Barriers, and Internet Services Barriers. Foreign language anxiety correlated with Library Stoff Barriers, Library Services Barriers, and Affective Barriers. The implications for the library is that students who …
Test-Based Accountability Systems: Concerns For Indiana’S Multilingual Learners And Their Teachers, Kathryn Brooks, Brooke Kandel-Cisco
Test-Based Accountability Systems: Concerns For Indiana’S Multilingual Learners And Their Teachers, Kathryn Brooks, Brooke Kandel-Cisco
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
Indiana’s current test-based accountability system grew, in part, out of decades of federal-level educational reform initiatives. This article reviews the history of Indiana’s test-based accountability system for schools and details how the system calculates evaluative ratings for Indiana teachers and schools. Additionally, the article analyzes how the Indiana accountability system contradicts what is known about appropriate measurement of English language learners and lists psychometric and validity concerns such as valid assessment, non-random assignment, norming groups, and ceiling/bottom effects. This article calls for a system in which multiple assessments offer rich data for school and teacher evaluations.
Using Photovoice To Empower K-12 Teachers And Students Through Authentic Literacy Engagements, Susan R. Adams, Kathryn Brooks
Using Photovoice To Empower K-12 Teachers And Students Through Authentic Literacy Engagements, Susan R. Adams, Kathryn Brooks
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
PhotoVoice is a community and participatory action research method developed by Wang and Burris (1994). Rooted in grassroots empowerment education, critical feminist theory, and documentary photography, it aims to enable people with little money, power, or status to communicate needed changes to policymakers. Examples of PhotoVoice projects can be found in fields outside of education, focusing on a range of social issues including homelessness, physical ailments, mental and psychological illness, and gender discrimination. Only a handful of studies in the United States have demonstrated use of PhotoVoice with adolescents in out-of-school educational settings (Chio & Fandt, 2007; Strack, Magill, & …

As street politics began to operate academically after the civil rights eras, academic turns toward socio-constructive theories dominated critical philosophies of the subsequent eighties and nineties (especially in the West). This paper examines the linguistic turn in light of a New Digital World Millennium that is the continuation of the Rise of Science that emerged in the 17th century. Material voices that were overshadowed by linguistic or terministically-centered philosophies are today more than ever emergent through tool use. The wireless revolution of the late 19th century has today created technological tools at hand that are deeply impressing the human being-in-the-world, …

Synchrony, Complexity And Directiveness In Mothers' Interactions With Infants Pre- And Post-Cochlear Implantation, Mary K. Fagan, Tonya R. Bergeson, Kourtney J. Morris
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
This study investigated effects of profound hearing loss on mother–infant interactions before and after cochlear implantation with a focus on maternal synchrony, complexity, and directiveness. Participants included two groups of mother–infant dyads: 9 dyads of mothers and infants with normal hearing; and 9 dyads of hearing mothers and infants with profound hearing loss. Dyads were observed at two time points: Time 1, scheduled to occur before cochlear implantation for infants with profound hearing loss (mean age = 13.6 months); and Time 2 (mean age = 23.3 months), scheduled to occur approximately six months after cochlear implantation. Hearing infants were age-matched …
