The Effect Of Dual-Language And Transitional-Bilingual Education Instructional Models On Spanish Proficiency For English Language Learners, Audrey Figueroa Murphy Jan 2014

The Effect Of Dual-Language And Transitional-Bilingual Education Instructional Models On Spanish Proficiency For English Language Learners, Audrey Figueroa Murphy

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

The effects of “transitional bilingual” and “dual language” educational models on proficiency in students’ home language (Spanish) were examined in a study of English language learners in the first and second grades in a large urban elementary school. In each grade, students were taught with either a transitional-bilingual model or a dual-language one, with a Spanish proficiency assessment administered on a pre/post basis. ANOVA results showed that both models produced significant increases in multiple dimensions of Spanish proficiency (alphabet/sight words, reading, writing, listening, and verbal expression). However, second-grade students in dual-language classrooms (who had longer exposure to the instructional model …

Guiding Students' Scientific Practice, Deniz Peker Jan 2014

Guiding Students' Scientific Practice, Deniz Peker

Faculty Bibliography

Many science education programs involve scientists in K-12 education to support students’ engagement in scientific practices and learning science process skills and scientific epistemologies. Little research has studied the actions of scientists in classrooms or how scientists’ actions may (or may not) supplement or complement the actions of teachers. In this descriptive study, we explore how teachers and scientists, working in pairs, guide high school students in the practice of scientific experimentation. In particular, we study the ways by which teachers and scientists act independently and in concert to guide students in designing and conducting biology experiments with unknown outcomes. …

Pharaoh: Conceptual Blending Of Cognitive Scripts For Computationally Creative Agents, Rania Hodhod Jan 2014

Pharaoh: Conceptual Blending Of Cognitive Scripts For Computationally Creative Agents, Rania Hodhod

Faculty Bibliography

Improvisational acting is a creative group performance where actors co-construct stories on stage in real-time based on actors’ perceptions of the environment. The Digital Improv Project has been engaged in a multi-year study of the cognitive processes involved in improvisational acting. This better understanding of human cognition and creativity has led to formal computational models of some aspects of our findings. In this work, we consider enriching AI improv agents with the ability to improvise new nontraditional scenes based on existing social cognitive scripts. This paper shows how the use of Pharaoh -a context based structural retrieval algorithm for cognitive …

"Call Her Calamity Electrifies Man": Alp And The Movement Of Archive In Finnegan’S Wake, Ellen Scheible Jan 2014

"Call Her Calamity Electrifies Man": Alp And The Movement Of Archive In Finnegan’S Wake, Ellen Scheible

English Faculty Publications

The existence of characters in Joyce’s dream world of Finnegans Wake rarely proves their singular presence in the text. As readers we are led to incorporate different characters into our interpretation of any one character; the temporal and historical circularity of the Wake is then personified in a whirlpool of characterization. Comprising both the motion and consistency of this whirlpool, Anna Livia is most certainly the nexus of activity for the otherwise sleepy Earwicker narrative. Yet, recognizing the textual motion of both the character and concept of ALP, (or even simply the potential for signifying motion within the text) as …

Tracking Jesusa: Geographic Information Systems And Character Development In Hasta No Verte, Jesús Mío, Pamela H. Long, Kevin W. Long

Diálogo

This study examines the uses of mapping software and web tools to produce multimedia annotations of a literary work—in this case Hasta no verte, Jesús mío by Elena Poniatowska—to the end of strengthening student engagement with the text, and cultural and literary contexts. The authors, a professor and a student at Auburn University-Montgomery, photographed scenes of specific sites and landmarks mentioned in the novel, mapped them on Google Maps, then linked the sites with historic photos of the periods indicated in the novel, in preparation for creating a unique website.

Intersticios, Cruzamientos E Intersecciones: Desafíos Pedagógicos En La Noche De Tlatelolco De Elena Poniatowska, Luis H. Peña

Diálogo

This article reviews the pedagogical practices and experiences of undergraduate students upon confronting the emblematic text of the 1960s, La noche de Tlatelolco (1971; Massacre in Mexico, 1975), by Elena Poniatowska. Students are guided to consider ethics, aesthetics and politics as conceptual vectors to help them problematize this historic event materialized into a literary text, through its borders, linguistic and ideological representational nature, to evaluate the intricacies of contextual knowledge.

Expertise And Service: A Call To Action, Rebecca Butler Jan 2014

Expertise And Service: A Call To Action, Rebecca Butler

Library Faculty Publications

Although theological librarianship occurs most often at seminaries or graduate level theology programs, there are also librarians working with theology on an undergraduate level. In many cases, these librarians are responsible for additional subject areas and may or may not have any theological expertise or training. While the two groups do the same types of work, they are doing so in different ways. To explore these commonalities and differences, a study was conducted among undergraduate theology liaisons and those results were compared with the literature and data regarding graduate level theological librarianship. One hundred ten undergraduate librarians responded to a …

Consciousness, Quantum Physics, And Hermeneutical Phenomenology, Patrick A. Heelan Sj Jan 2014

Consciousness, Quantum Physics, And Hermeneutical Phenomenology, Patrick A. Heelan Sj

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Two hundred years ago Friedrich Schleiermacher modified Kant’s notion of anthropology—‘hermeneutically,’ as he said — so as to make it inclusive of the tribes that Captain Cook found in the South Sea Islands. This paper honors the late Joseph J. Kockelmans for making a similar hermeneutic move to update Kant’s notion of natural science so as to make it inclusive of the phenomenological lifeworld (For ‘lifeworld,’ see Husserl’s The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Philosophy, 1954, 121–148, and the ‘lifeworld’ theme throughout the Crisis. ) syntheses of classical, relativity, and quantum physics. The new synthesis is in fact …

Influential Factors Of Deaf Identity Development, Ge Chen Jan 2014

Influential Factors Of Deaf Identity Development, Ge Chen

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The development of deaf identity is a complicated and difficult process, and it was studied by many researchers from last century. They found that the development of deaf identity was affected by a lot of different factors and then they proved these influential factors by the qualitative or quantitative research methods in their articles or books, such as, the status of hearing loss, the educational experience, the environment of family, the mode of communication and so on. In present article, such influential factors will be summarized based on analyzing the theory of deaf identity development, and how these factors influence …

Mb-Tot: An Effective Model For Topic Mining In Microblogs, Shaopeng Liu, Jian Yin, Jia Ouyang, Piyuan Lin Jan 2014

Mb-Tot: An Effective Model For Topic Mining In Microblogs, Shaopeng Liu, Jian Yin, Jia Ouyang, Piyuan Lin

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Topic mining on microblogging sites with sheer scale of instance messages and social network information, such as Twitter, is a hard and challenging problem. Although many text mining techniques and generative probabilistic models have been developed for static plain-text corpus, they are inclined to achieve unsatisfactory results in microblogs without considering that microblogs are temporally sequential and concerned with social network information. In this paper, we propose a novel topic model, MicroBlog- Topics over Time (MB-ToT), which aims for comprehensive topic analysis in microblogs. Firstly, we assume each topic is a mixture distribution influenced by both word co-occurrences and timestamps …

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects on reading achievement for middle school students after participation in a remedial reading program, Xtreme Reading, at a southeastern state public school. The researcher used Stufflebeam's (2003) context, input, process, and product (CIPP) model to guide the study. A mixed-method research design was used to examine data collected from 80 students in Grades 6 through 8 participating in reading interventions spanning a 1-year period from 2013 through 2014.

There were significant differences in reading achievement scores of students during the 1-year implementation of Xtreme Reading. The findings in this study …

Double-Effect Reasoning Defended: A Response To Scanlon, Thomas A. Cavanaugh Jan 2014

Double-Effect Reasoning Defended: A Response To Scanlon, Thomas A. Cavanaugh

Philosophy

Common morality endorses some form of an exceptionless prohibition against killing innocents. Natural lawyers employ double-effect reasoning (DER) to address hard cases involving deaths of the innocent. Current deontologists (Scanlon and Thomson) criticize DER-proponents as conflating act-with agent-evaluations. Scanlon develops this critique extensively. I respond to his criticism. He maintains that the DER-advocate tells a badly-motivated agent to refrain from an obligatory act. Thus, he asserts, the natural lawyer who employs DER errs. Instead, Scanlon proposes, one ought to assess the act as permissible while blaming the agent. I argue that DER does not succumb to this critique. Moreover, Scanlon’s …

Hoisan-Wa In Jest: Humor, Laughter, And The Construction Of Counter-Hegemonic Affect In Contemporary Chinese American Language Maintenance, Genevieve Leung Jan 2014

Hoisan-Wa In Jest: Humor, Laughter, And The Construction Of Counter-Hegemonic Affect In Contemporary Chinese American Language Maintenance, Genevieve Leung

Rhetoric and Language Faculty Publications and Research

This research examines the language and cultural maintenance of Chinese Americans of a specific heritage: Hoisan-wa people. Hoisan-wa is one of the languages linking nearly all early Chinese immigrants in the U.S., but this language background has been pushed aside by the presence of other Chinese languages in America, such as Standard Cantonese and Mandarin. It has also been perpetually omitted from research for the last 150 years.

Drawing from 93 sociolinguistic interviews with Hoisan-wa heritage people, I explore instances of humor and laughter as these participants talk about their cultural and linguistic heritage. Home and family remain two of …

Using Art To Assess Environmental Education Outcomes, Ami G. Flowers, John P. Carroll, Gary T. Green, Lincoln R. Larson Jan 2014

Using Art To Assess Environmental Education Outcomes, Ami G. Flowers, John P. Carroll, Gary T. Green, Lincoln R. Larson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Construction of developmentally appropriate tools for assessing the environmental attitudes and awareness of young learners has proven to be challenging. Art-based assessments that encourage creativity and accommodate different modes of expression may be a particularly useful complement to conventional tools (e.g. surveys), but their efficacy and feasibility across diverse contexts has not been adequately explored. To examine the potential utility of integrating art into evaluations of environmental education outcomes, we adapted an existing drawing prompt and corresponding grading rubric to assess the environmental attitudes and awareness of children (ages 6–12) at summer camps in Athens, GA, USA (n = …

Investigating The Lay And Scientific Norms For Using ‘Explanation’, Jonathan Waskan, Ian Harmon, Andrew Higgins, Joseph Spino Jan 2014

Investigating The Lay And Scientific Norms For Using ‘Explanation’, Jonathan Waskan, Ian Harmon, Andrew Higgins, Joseph Spino

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In the mid-twentieth century, Hempel (1962, 1965) bucked posit ivist ort hodoxy and proposed that explanations have a legitimate role to play in science. Yet, when it came time to offer up a model of explanation, Hempel held fast to the positivist tendency of abstracting both from facts about human psychology and from the specific contents of claims (i.e., in favor of bare logical form). At the broadest level, he proposed that explanations are sets of true statements arranged into formally acceptable arguments. That such arguments count as explanations has, Hempel thought, nothing to do with what anyone thinks or …

Inquiry-Based Teaching In Second And Foreign Language Pedagogy, Horng-Yi Lee Jan 2014

Inquiry-Based Teaching In Second And Foreign Language Pedagogy, Horng-Yi Lee

Modern Languages

It is the consensus among language educators that the objectives of teaching a second/foreign language (L2) put stress on the enhancement of students’ communication skills and advocate the importance of interaction in the classroom. In addition to theories and methods exclusively dedicated to language instruction, the domain-independent inquiry-based teaching, a cognitive approach, can be easily and effectively integrated into the L2 classroom which echoes the concerns and needs in L2 education. Inquiry teaching is characterized by its question-answer interactive information exchanges. Instead of learning passively, it stimulates students to actively engage in cognitive and discovery learning activities. It is assumed …
