Awisa (Do Not Be Afraid) By Ibn Dawud (1305 Ah - 1888 Ad), Khalid Abd Fazaae

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

This treatise, which I present today, explains the origin of the phrase "Do not fear," by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Hamdani. It comprehensively and meticulously addresses all aspects of the subject, drawing on relevant linguistic and grammatical rules, and supported by numerous examples and references. The author also included additional insights and explanations derived from the sources used or mentioned, aiming to provide a complete and unified understanding of this topic. While the subject itself is not new, being discussed in various linguistic and grammatical texts, the author sought to present a more cohesive and comprehensive treatment, addressing the shortcomings …

Difficulties Facing Advanced Iraq Efl Learners, Hussein Mohammed Abdul Hassan, Mahdi Mohsen Mohammed

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The present study is a linguistic investigation of equivalence above word level. It deals with the difficulties of non-equivalence posed in translating English idioms into Arabic and vice versa, and the methods used by 4th year students of English to find the suitable equivalent in the target language. The aim of this study is to examine the type of difficulty students at this level face while translating idioms and tries to suggest solutions and identify strategies that may help to limit or avoid these difficulties. In this respect, a test made up of twelve English idioms and ten Arabic ones …

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

What happens to feminism in the university is parallel to what happens to feminism in other venues under economic restructuring: while the impoverished nation is forced to cut social services and thereby send women back to the hierarchy of the family, the academy likewise reduces its footprint in interdisciplinary structures and contains academic feminists back to the hierarchy of departments and disciplines. When the family and the department become powerful arbiters of cultural values, women and feminist academics by and large suffer: they either accept a diminished role or are pushed to compete in a system they recognize as antithetical …

The New Normal: Goodness Judgments Of Non-Invariant Speech, Julia R. Drouin May 2014

The New Normal: Goodness Judgments Of Non-Invariant Speech, Julia R. Drouin

Honors Scholar Theses

Previous research has found that perceptual learning, or normalizing the idiosyncratic phonemes of speech, causes a shift in speech sound category boundaries. The present study examined if perceptual learning was limited to the boundary or if also caused a shift in internal category structure. Seventeen individuals participated in three behavioral tasks to explicate this question. In the Lexical Decision task, participants were trained in either /s/-biasing or /ʃ/- biasing context. In the Goodness Judgment task, participants rated a continuum of sounds on perceived /s/ goodness using a designated scale. Finally, in the Phoneme Identification task, participants listened to the same …

The Audience In Intellectual Property Infringement, Jeanne C. Fromer, Mark A. Lemley May 2014

The Audience In Intellectual Property Infringement, Jeanne C. Fromer, Mark A. Lemley

Michigan Law Review

Every intellectual property (“IP”) right has its own definition of infringement. In this Article, we suggest that this diversity of legal rules is largely traceable to differences in the audience in IP cases. Patent, trademark, copyright, and design patent each focus on a different person as the fulcrum for evaluating IP infringement. That patent law, for example, focuses on an expert audience while trademark looks to a consumer audience explains many of the differences in how patent and trademark cases are decided. Expert audiences are likely to evaluate infringement based on the technical similarity between the plaintiff’s and defendant’s works. …

Language Attitudes Of First And Second Generation Afghan-Americans And Iranian-Americans Toward Dari And Persian, Afsoon Hansia May 2014

Language Attitudes Of First And Second Generation Afghan-Americans And Iranian-Americans Toward Dari And Persian, Afsoon Hansia

Linguistics ETDs

The goal of this study is to investigate the current language attitudes of first and second generation Afghan and Iranian-Americans toward the two varieties Dari and Persian of the Indo-Iranian language Farsi. Research on this subject can facilitate future endeavors toward heritage language maintenance efforts in order to preserve a linguistically diverse America and address an unprecedented need for government professionals who are skilled in languages that are currently in demand such as Dari. Based on the sociopolitical context of both immigrant groups, the hypothesis is that Afghan and Iranian-Americans consider Persian more overtly prestigious and that each ethnic group …

The Unencumbered Body: Imagining Liberty And Sovereignty In Pre- And Post- Revolutionary Literatures Of The Americas, Elizabeth Kelly May 2014

The Unencumbered Body: Imagining Liberty And Sovereignty In Pre- And Post- Revolutionary Literatures Of The Americas, Elizabeth Kelly

Open Access Dissertations

In the following work, I argue that writers in pre- and post-revolutionary Haiti and the United States conceived of liberty and resistance to sovereign power through disembodied figures that complicate the relationship between the physical body and the psyche, including sleepwalkers, spirits, and zombies. As a comparative analysis of lesser-known Haitian texts and canonical U.S. works, my project uncovers clear, multidirectional influences between the locales. First, I consider the meanings inscribed on tortured bodies in revolutionary Saint Domingue. I trace two important themes in Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines’ writings; Louverture uses metaphors of family and disease to sort out …

A Fuzzy Decision Making Trial And Evaluation Laboratory Analysis Of Scm System Implementation, Ta-Ping Lu, Pei-Luen Patrick Rau, Tang-Zuo Liou, Yi-Hsin Yang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This study has two phases. The first phase constructs a comprehensive model of key success factors (KSFs) for supply chain network management implementation in the semiconductor industry based on both a literature review and an expert review. The model has four dimensions: strategy, process, organization, and technology (SPOT), and 15 KSFs. The SPOT model can be a checklist for future projects. The second phase analyzed the complicated interrelationship among KSFs with Fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory and discussed its managerial implications. Lastly, we provide two case studies to confirm the importance of the two most important factors.

Mapping The Social Sciences Landscape: A Way Forward, David A. Pendlebury May 2014

Mapping The Social Sciences Landscape: A Way Forward, David A. Pendlebury

Library Events

The use of bibliometric data for the analysis of research performance in the social sciences presents significant challenges, especially in some fields whose publication patterns differ markedly from the sciences. For example, the book literature is a more important vehicle for scholarly communication in many social sciences fields than it is in the sciences and, therefore, should not be excluded from examination. A brief review of this and other issues will be presented as well as those that affect attempts to map research activity in the social sciences. Mapping the specialty and higher-level structure of scholarly research and detecting changes …

The Great Commission, Don Fanning May 2014

The Great Commission, Don Fanning

Eruditio Ardescens

This last promise in Matthew extends beyond the life span of the Apostles to every believer that commits to the task of raising up a group of Christ-followers among every ethno-linguistic people groups on earth “to the end of the age” (Matt 28:20b). This phrase is also found in Matt 13:39-40, 49; 24:3, which refer to the end of the present age when the Son of Man returns to establish His kingdom. Thus the promise not only applied to these 1st century disciples, but to every disciple since then and until the end of the Church Age. We can …

Solving Fully Fuzzy Linear System With The Necessary And Sufficient Condition To Have A Positive Solution, Ghassan Malkawi, Nazihah Ahmad, Haslinda Ibrahim May 2014

Solving Fully Fuzzy Linear System With The Necessary And Sufficient Condition To Have A Positive Solution, Ghassan Malkawi, Nazihah Ahmad, Haslinda Ibrahim

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper proposes new matrix methods for solving positive solutions for a positive Fully Fuzzy Linear System (FFLS). All coefficients on the right hand side are collected in one block matrix, while the entries on the left hand side are collected in one vector. Therefore, the solution can be gained with a non-fuzzy common step. The necessary theorems are derived to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition in order to obtain the solution. The solution for FFLS is obtained where the entries of coefficients are unknown. The methods and results are also capable of solving Left-Right Fuzzy Linear System (LR-FLS). To …

Event Detection In Multiple Webpages Based On Comprehensive Dimension Matching And Co-Occurrence Constraint, Yuanzi Xu, Qingzhong Li, Zhongmin Yan, Wei Wang May 2014

Event Detection In Multiple Webpages Based On Comprehensive Dimension Matching And Co-Occurrence Constraint, Yuanzi Xu, Qingzhong Li, Zhongmin Yan, Wei Wang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Detecting various sentence-level events from multiple webpages can be important in finding knowledge. We propose an event detection method based on comprehensive dimension matching and co-occurrence constraint. First, we detect events from a single webpage by clustering co-reference sentence-level event mentions. These events are considered as co-occurrence events in every single webpage. Second, similar events from multiple webpages are clustered. The dimension matching method is used to aggregate event mentions. Different matchers measure different dimensions, and an extended evidence theory is proposed to allocate dynamic weight and combine dimension measurement results. We propose an event co-occurrence constraint to reduce match times …

Integrating The Taguchi Method And Response Surface Methodology For Process Parameter Optimization Of The Injection Molding, Yung-Tsan Jou, Wen-Tsann Lin, Wei-Cheng Lee, Tsu-Ming Yeh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The outer coating of an optical fiber cable protects the optical fiber, and the contraction rate of the outer coating can affect the communication capacity and distance, so the contraction rate is often regarded as the key factor in defining the quality of an optical fiber cable. For this reason, using the example of the circular single-pin optical fiber cable manufacturing process of the largest optical communication manufacturer in the world, the Taguchi Method (TM) is used to screen the variables that have significant effects on the contraction rate of the outer coating. Furthermore, the optimization engineering of Response Surface …

Evaluating Strategic Leadership Based On The Method Of Fuzzy Analytic Network Process, Fei Li, Lijun Liu, Bao Xi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We apply the method of Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (ANP-Fuzzy) to evaluate strategic leadership, because its indexes are complex, inter-relationship, and fuzzy. First, construct indexes system of strategic leadership ,which constitutes of personal abilities and organizational abilities. Second, interpret the fitness of ANP-Fuzzy for strategic leadership and the method’s implication steps of ANP structure, pairwise comparisons and priority vectors, super matrix formation and transformation, and fuzzy evaluation. Final, design ANP structure of strategic leadership , calculate priorities, and analyse empirically strategic leadership of candidates for promotion by fuzzy evaluation. Results show that the method is feasible, because it can get …

Toward An Ecotheological Anthropology, Peter Garcia

Seminary Masters Theses

The image of God has carried with it a special designation for humanity within the panoply of life on earth. This project attempts to reorient and expand theological anthropology to include the ecological dimension in Christian perspective to cultivate an understanding of the ecological self. This project will place traditional interpretations of what it means to be human into conversation with twentieth-century ecological philosophies and Native American spirituality in order to broaden the Christian imagination for understanding ourselves within creation. Vine Deloria’s analyses of Western temporal thinking and spatial thinking demonstrated by Native worldviews provides perspective for necessary theological shifts …
