A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Life Experiences Of Unaccompanied Korean Adolescents In The United States, Tae-Sik Kim May 2014

A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Life Experiences Of Unaccompanied Korean Adolescents In The United States, Tae-Sik Kim

The Qualitative Report

Recognizing the lack of comprehensive academic study concerning the life experiences of unaccompanied Korean adolescents overseas, this study inquired into many aspects of the daily life of the young sojourners. In order to achieve a comprehensive understanding of their living experiences, the present study set broad research questions: What do unaccompanied adolescents experience in host homes, schools, and communities in the United States? How do they build personal relationships with people in the United States? How do they deal with new experiences in different sociocultural environments? A total of 31 Korean students in Oklahoma City, Boston, and Dallas participated in …

A Comparison Of Linguistic Features In The Academic Writing Of Advanced English Language Learner And English First Language University Students, Margo K. Russell May 2014

A Comparison Of Linguistic Features In The Academic Writing Of Advanced English Language Learner And English First Language University Students, Margo K. Russell

Dissertations and Theses

Writing for an academic purpose is not an easy skill to master, whether for a native English speaker (L1) or an English language learner (ELL). In order to better prepare ELL students for success in mainstream content courses at the university level, more must be known about the characteristics of student writing in the local context of an intensive English program. This information can be used to inform ELL writing instructors of which linguistic features to target so that their students produce writing that sounds appropriate for the academic written register.

Two corpora of 30 research essays each were compiled, …

Toward An Effective Automated Tracing Process, Anas Mohammad Mahmoud May 2014

Toward An Effective Automated Tracing Process, Anas Mohammad Mahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

Traceability is defined as the ability to establish, record, and maintain dependency relations among various software artifacts in a software system, in both a forwards and backwards direction, throughout the multiple phases of the project’s life cycle. The availability of traceability information has been proven vital to several software engineering activities such as program comprehension, impact analysis, feature location, software reuse, and verification and validation (V&V). The research on automated software traceability has noticeably advanced in the past few years. Various methodologies and tools have been proposed in the literature to provide automatic support for establishing and maintaining traceability information …

The Practice Of Teachers Reading Aloud In The Classroom, John C. Bost May 2014

The Practice Of Teachers Reading Aloud In The Classroom, John C. Bost

Education

This inquiry, which involved use of a teacher survey and classroom observations, was designed to explore how teachers use the practice of reading aloud. This small case study, of one urban elementary school in Alaska, also set out to examine how teachers view the practice of a read-aloud. Studies have identified a number of effective components of a read-aloud. This study found teachers in agreement on some important reasons to read aloud and the components of a read-aloud that they value. The teachers in my inquiry appear to value reading aloud and they all share similarities in how they use …

Community Space For Decolonization And Resistance: Kodiak Alutiiq Language Club Participant Perspectives, Michael James Bach May 2014

Community Space For Decolonization And Resistance: Kodiak Alutiiq Language Club Participant Perspectives, Michael James Bach

Arctic and Northern Studies

Language Club is one of many Language Revitalization initiatives currently being used to reclaim space for Alutiiq, a highly endangered Alaska Native language. Since 2003, Language Club has been a site of learning and sharing for both Alutiiq language learners, and Elders. The study draws upon eight semi-structured interviews, numerous post-data discussions, field notes, and observations in order to understand Language Club participants' spoken and unspoken goals. Data was analyzed using Constructivist Grounded Theory. Themes and subthemes identified include: community, family-like structure, culture and tradition and healing. Using Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit) to better understand these themes, we find …

Where The Rivers Meet: The Life Story Of The Reverend Helen Peters Of Tanana, Hild M. Peters May 2014

Where The Rivers Meet: The Life Story Of The Reverend Helen Peters Of Tanana, Hild M. Peters

Arctic and Northern Studies

This thesis presents the life story of the Reverend Helen Peters, an Athabascan woman whose life exemplifies how faith in God can help a person to overcome great obstacles and trauma. The western view of leadership is very different from the concept as understood among Alaska Natives. Leadership of Native elders is the embodiment of their character, their conscience, their family history, traditions, language ability and spirituality. At every gathering the elders are expected to discuss these concepts in order to instruct and guide the people. In this way, they lead by example and find any and every opportunity to …

Use Of Tlingit Art And Identity By Non-Tlingit People In Sitka, Alaska, David Kreiss-Tomkins May 2014

Use Of Tlingit Art And Identity By Non-Tlingit People In Sitka, Alaska, David Kreiss-Tomkins

Arctic and Northern Studies

Tlingit culture, as with many Indigenous cultures that exist under colonial rule, is often described as being in danger of disappearing. Despite this, the appropriation of and subsequent use of cultural practices by non-Tlingit people, and especially white people, is a continuation of the process of colonization when it is enacted in a manner that is not critical of current and historical racism, capitalist pressures and colonial violence. This project addresses the topic through recorded conversations with seven Tlingit women in Sitka, Alaska in an attempt to place Tlingit cultural production and use in the broader contexts of Indigenous cultural …

Mapping Landscape Values And Forest Uses On The Tongass National Forest, Britta Schroeder May 2014

Mapping Landscape Values And Forest Uses On The Tongass National Forest, Britta Schroeder

Forest Sciences

Throughout the world, humans are often faced with the challenge of sustaining economic development while also promoting environmental stewardship. Such is true for the management history of the Tongass National Forest, where the U.S. Forest Service is transitioning away from harvesting old-growth and moving towards a more economically and environmentally sustainable approach. To measure the preferences of local community members affected by this transition, I conducted an interdisciplinary case study on the Wrangell Ranger District in Southeast Alaska. Community members from Wrangell mapped landscape values, acceptable and unacceptable forest uses. By assessing these landscape values and forest uses with respondents' …

Russian Impact On Cultural Identity And Heritage In The Middle Kuskokwim Region Of Alaska, Cheryl L. Jerabek

Indigenous Studies

The objective of my research is to document the role that Russian heritage has played in the individual and group identity of Native people in the middle Kuskokwim River region of Alaska. For purposes of this study this area includes the villages of Lower Kalskag, Upper Kalskag, Aniak, Chuathbaluk, Napaimute, Crooked Creek, Red Devil, Georgetown, Sleetmute, and Stony River. The changes and adaptations that occurred in the middle Kuskokwim River area during the Russian era 1790-1867, the changes that occurred with the sale of Alaska to the United States, and the continued changes up to the present time, including the …

Icop: Automatically Identifying New Child Abuse Media In P2p Networks, C Peersman, A Rashid, C Schulze, M Brennan, C Fischer May 2014

Icop: Automatically Identifying New Child Abuse Media In P2p Networks, C Peersman, A Rashid, C Schulze, M Brennan, C Fischer

School of Psychology

The increasing levels of child sex abuse (CSA) media being shared in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks pose a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies. Although a number of P2P monitoring tools to detect offender activity in such networks exist, they typically rely on hash value databases of known CSA media. Such an approach cannot detect new or previously unknown media being shared. Conversely, identifying such new previously unknown media is a priority for law enforcement - they can be indicators of recent or on-going child abuse. Furthermore, originators of such media can be hands-on abusers and their apprehension can safeguard children …

Intercultural Mentoring: How International Students Identify And Foster Key Socialization Relationships, Elizabeth A. Rossi May 2014

Intercultural Mentoring: How International Students Identify And Foster Key Socialization Relationships, Elizabeth A. Rossi

Communication

Mentoring is a widely studied relationship because of the critical job it serves for socialization and integration into the university system. Mentoring relationships can serve as sources of academic, social, and emotional support. Support while adapting to a new environment can heighten overall satisfaction an individual feels as well as increase the individual's overall success. Mentoring for domestic students entering the university is clearly valuable, but becomes more complex for international students. Intercultural communication is an interaction that takes place between individuals or groups who are from different cultural backgrounds. Understanding how diverse our world is can bring better awareness …

Speaking Of Change: A Conversation Analysis Of Organizational Change In A Business Meeting, Erik J. Ludwig May 2014

Speaking Of Change: A Conversation Analysis Of Organizational Change In A Business Meeting, Erik J. Ludwig

Communication

Current theories of communication in human organizations conceptualize them as entities that are created, maintained, and changed in the everyday discourse among the individuals who comprise them. In arguing this general perspective, however, these theories do not come to grips with how the processes of creating, maintaining, and changing are actually implemented in the actual day-to-day talk that occurs in organizations. This study utilized an abstract characterization of episodic and continuous change in organizations to inform a single-case, conversation analytic investigation of the talk-in-interaction in a recording of business meeting in a small company. The analysis revealed that features of …

Enhancing Requirements-Level Defect Detection And Prevention With Visual Analytics, Shirin Rad May 2014

Enhancing Requirements-Level Defect Detection And Prevention With Visual Analytics, Shirin Rad

Theses and Dissertations

Keeping track of requirements from eliciting data to making decision needs an effective path from data to decision [43]. Visualization science helps to create this path by extracting insights from flood of data. Model helps to shape the transformation of data to visualization. Defect Detection and Prevention model was created to assess quality assurance activities. We selected DDP and started enhancing user interactivity with requirements visualization over basic DDP with implementing a visual requirements analytics framework. By applying GQM table to our framework, we added six visualization features to the existing visual requirements visualization approaches. We applied this framework to …

Perceptions Of Kindergarten Teachers Regarding Professional Development In New Jersey's Public Schools, Deborah Fitzpatrick May 2014

Perceptions Of Kindergarten Teachers Regarding Professional Development In New Jersey's Public Schools, Deborah Fitzpatrick

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

PreK-3 is a growing national initiative designed to transform the educational experiences of young children. Research indicates that young children’s educational gains are more likely to last when quality preschool programs are linked with the elementary years. A PreK-3 approach integrates and builds strong connections between the learning experiences of children ages three through eight. Kindergarten is the grade where preschool and primary grade experiences intersect.

The purpose of this study was to examine kindergarten teachers’ opinions regarding professional development opportunities in early childhood education which may help facilitate implementation of the PreK-3 continuum. This was accomplished through an examination …

Reading In Vogue: The Function Of Fashion In Three Chopin Short Stories, Rachael Scardelli May 2014

Reading In Vogue: The Function Of Fashion In Three Chopin Short Stories, Rachael Scardelli

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Since its debut in 1892, Vogue magazine has been a temple for fashion and consumerism amongst the elite. It provided instructions on mannerisms, tastes, marriages, and the latest styles. In 1900, the average family income was $769 with $108 allocated to clothing costs; the average elite consumer was spending more than $556 on clothing per year. Today, that would be a clothing budget of more than $12,000. With the ever-increasing interest in cultural studies of objects, particularly clothing and fashion, it is startling that more has not been done with the nineteen short stories Kate Chopin published in the magazine …

An Investigation Of American Students’ Tonal Acquisition Towards Disyllabic Words With Same Or Different Tones, Yuan Yuan May 2014

An Investigation Of American Students’ Tonal Acquisition Towards Disyllabic Words With Same Or Different Tones, Yuan Yuan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Mastering Mandarin tones is an indispensable path to achieving high Chinese language proficiency and a headache to a lot of American learners. Scholars keep studying this area, but this problem remains unsolved.

Through long-time observation of beginners, I found an interesting phenomenon: many students were able to correctly produce a certain tone (Tone X) which was contained by a monosyllable. However, when the students encountered a disyllabic word with the tone which they were skillful at (Tone X) and another different tone (Tone Y), the students showed no advantage on Tone X. This phenomenon motivated me to do research on …

Collapsing The Secret Self: Thackeray's The History Of Pendennis As A Performative Parody, Rachel Freire May 2014

Collapsing The Secret Self: Thackeray's The History Of Pendennis As A Performative Parody, Rachel Freire

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

By collapsing the distinctions between private and public as he presents individual interiority as yet another performance, Thackeray’s The History of Pendennis undercuts disciplinary individualism, so that performances are not the product of social regulation but rather are as genuine as any presumed private thoughts or feelings. Pendennis actively performs the dissolution of interiority, as it thematically and stylistically enacts the awkwardness of genuine affectation as a routine and unavoidable reality of modern life. Reveling in the discomfort that accompanies the absence of secrecy, Thackeray parodies the privileging of secrecy and one’s interior self that pervades the Bildung genre he …

A Study Of U.S. Education Outcomes For Female Students From The Republic Of Georgia, Nino Bitsadze May 2014

A Study Of U.S. Education Outcomes For Female Students From The Republic Of Georgia, Nino Bitsadze

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This qualitative study sought to understand how living and studying in the United States affected the personalities, beliefs, attitudes, and careers of a group of female students from the Republic of Georgia. The researcher traveled to Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, to interview twenty alumni of U.S. study programs (on undergraduate and graduate study levels) individually. Jack Mezirow’s Transformational Learning Theory and David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory provide the theoretical framework for the study.

The findings revealed that living and studying in the U.S. matured the participants personally as they got to experience the challenges that accompany living independently in an unfamiliar …

Re-Enchanting The Spectacle, Shayna Cohn May 2014

Re-Enchanting The Spectacle, Shayna Cohn

Graduate School of Art Theses

“Re-Enchanting the Spectacle” explores guiding notions and central themes within the art practice of Shayna Cohn. Cohn’s installation spaces and sculptures within them, evoke a type of fabricated aura and melodramatic attitude of entertainment sites. By isolating the affect outside of the original environment, Cohn references the perceptual duality of entertainment sites within this “post-sacred” era. Entertainment venues become sites of potential transcendence, yet are also inextricably tied to their automated mechanization. Drawing on the Peter Brooks’ analysis of the historical and poetic relationship between melodrama and the sacred, Cohn argues that contemporary notions of melodrama can be found within …

I’M First: A Phenomenological Analysis Of The University Of North Carolina’S “Carolina Firsts” Interviews, Clara Martinez May 2014

I’M First: A Phenomenological Analysis Of The University Of North Carolina’S “Carolina Firsts” Interviews, Clara Martinez

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

This study analyzes interview videos and transcripts produced by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The first-generation interviews, known as “Carolina Firsts,” include current students, staff, and faculty. The phenomenological method was used to identify common themes in the videos and transcripts of six interviewees. Eight essential themes were revealed: the dream comes true, beating the odds, facing the unknown, a challenging first semester, reaching for the degree, it gets easier, the issue of pride, and Carolina keeps its promise. The eight themes identified provide new insights into similar communication experiences among Carolina Firsts interviewees. The study offers …

A Review Of The Literatures Of Gender Transformation, Metaphor, And Speech Acts In Anthropology, Gabriela I. Gonzalez May 2014

A Review Of The Literatures Of Gender Transformation, Metaphor, And Speech Acts In Anthropology, Gabriela I. Gonzalez

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

For this project, I compiled literature reviews to support Professor Hillary Crane’s research into Taiwanese Buddhist nuns’ gender transformations. This literature covers several themes pertinent to that research, including gender construction, the transformative nature of metaphor, and the potential role of speech acts in cultural change. Beginning with gender constructions and the possibilities of gender transformation of women, this literature reviews how gender is constructed in Asian cultures, particularly China and Taiwan, and how women work to accomplish gender transformations in these contexts. Secondly, this research examines theories about how metaphors are utilized in discourse, showing some of the functions …

Race, Family, And The Plantation Legacy In United States And Caribbean Writers, Taylor Hagood May 2014

Race, Family, And The Plantation Legacy In United States And Caribbean Writers, Taylor Hagood

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

Valérie Loichot’s Orphan Narratives: The Postplantation Literature of Faulkner, Glissant, Morrison, and Saint-John Perse explores the ways plantation culture and its powerful reverberations stretch from the Caribbean through the United States South to the Midwest in the writings of four authors imbricated in that culture. Reading elements of what she calls the postplantation as hemispherically widespread, she presents a methodology of approaching this topic that could have a significant impact on framing Caribbean-United States critical discourse.

The Neglected Heavens: Gender And The Cults Of Helios, Selene, And Eos In Bronze Age And Historical Greece, Katherine A. Rea May 2014

The Neglected Heavens: Gender And The Cults Of Helios, Selene, And Eos In Bronze Age And Historical Greece, Katherine A. Rea

Classics: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Why is it that the sun and moon held such a small place in cults of the Greeks, and is it that the sun is male and the moon is female in Greek myth? Aristophanes in Peace 406-413 claims that “we sacrifice to you [the Olympians], the barbarians sacrifice to them [the sun and moon]”. But if we look at nearby or related civilizations, the situation is quite different. In Ugaritic, Minoan, and Hittite religion (as well as among other Indo-European speaking people), the sun and other celestial deities have much more prominence. However, while the Greeks acknowledged the divinity …
