Día Del Niño: Los Efectos De Un Evento Transcultural En La Comunidad Local, Emma Rose Horowitz
World Languages and Cultures
The purpose of Día del Niño, also known as World Children’s Day, is to spread worldwide awareness of the rights that every child ‘should’ have. Through organizations such as UNICEF and the United Nations, extensive international work has been conducted throughout the past century in order to protect the lives of children from issues such as disease, hunger, abuse, and no access to an education. The idea of World Children’s Day has swept the globe, becoming an important event in societies all over the world. Although the day or traditions may not be the same in every country, the message …

Textual Appropriation And Attribution In Engineering Theses And Dissertations: An Exploratory Study, Edward J. Eckel
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
This exploratory study seeks to build a clearer picture of the extent to which engineering graduate students use and attribute unquoted verbatim source text in the literature review sections of their theses and dissertations. In addition, it explores whether or not there are differences between master’s and doctoral engineering students in these patterns of copying and attribution and what this might indicate about their potential skill levels in source use.
The study asks the following research questions: (1) Do the literature review sections of engineering master's theses contain longer average verbatim text matches than the corresponding sections of engineering doctoral …

Object Pleasures And Job Segregation: Barbers, Hairstylists, And The Material (Be)Longings Of Work, Craig Rich
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Increasingly, organization and communication scholars are paying critical attention to the materiality work/life. In this vein, this paper explores the connections between job segregation, object relations, and the performance of work belongings. In particular, it speaks into the question: how do object relations constitute segregated job belongings? Drawing on data from a year-long, comparative ethnography of barbers and hairstylists, the analysis focuses on barbershop and hair salon mirrors and the complex relations produced by barbers’ avoidance and hairstylists’ engagement of this common object. Specifically, these object relations were found to not only differentiate job belongings, but also materialize erotics (pains …
Idealism And Pragmatism In The Rhetoric Of John Boehner: A Weaverian Analysis Of Congressional Discourse, Cody Hawley
Idealism And Pragmatism In The Rhetoric Of John Boehner: A Weaverian Analysis Of Congressional Discourse, Cody Hawley
Masters Theses
American political rhetoric is characterized by a synthesis of contradictory idealistic and pragmatic elements, both of which are necessary if there is to be convincing persuasion. The way in which politicians rhetorically approach this dichotomy is significant, however, current studies on the topic are limited to presidential discourse. There is little research on this topic in other settings such the United States House of Representatives. This criticism analyzes John Boehner's congressional rhetoric in the idealistic-pragmatic dichotomy. The critical method utilized is Richard Weaver's four forms of argument-genus, similitude, consequence, and circumstance. Eight speeches of John Boehner, four from his position …

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
The purpose of this study was to examine Japanese parents of children with disabilities’ perceptions towards special education in the United States. This study included 40 participants who were born and raised in Japan and they are now living in the United States. The results revealed that most Japanese parents still maintained some negative perceptions towards special education from its history of labeling individuals with disabilities as “abnormal” in Japanese culture. Moreover, a majority of participants agreed that America’s special education was more focused on each individual’s needs and promoted independence whereas Japanese ideas of special education was mainly focused …

The Role Of Non-Lawyers On Administrative Tribunals: What Lay Members Think About Law, Lawyers, And Their Own Participation In Alaska’S Mixed Administrative Tribunals, Kristin Knudsen Latta
The Role Of Non-Lawyers On Administrative Tribunals: What Lay Members Think About Law, Lawyers, And Their Own Participation In Alaska’S Mixed Administrative Tribunals, Kristin Knudsen Latta
Alaska Law Review
Lay participation is a conventional, but little examined, aspect of Alaska's administrative law tribunals. The legal community is sometimes suspicious of lay members' competence, leading to a trust gap between legal professionals and their lay counterparts. With the goal of bridging this divide and shedding light on participants' perspective of serving on tribunals, this Article reviews the first survey study of Alaska lay members on state adjudicatory panels. Among other things, the survey focused on tribunals' gender and ethnic diversity, members' understanding of fairness and impartiality duties, their training, and the relationship lay participants had with administrative law judges. As …

Narrative Conflict Coaching, Ashley J. Pangborn
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Narrative conflict coaching is a counseling technique which focuses on separating clients from their problems and encouraging them to see their lives and futures from new perspectives. It has been used in a variety of arenas and is consistent with other practices within the field of narrative conflict resolution, such as narrative mediation. In this project I utilized qualitative research methods to analyze the immediate effectiveness of conflict coaching questioning techniques within the setting of a counseling conversation. The analysis focuses on the detail of the process of narrative conflict coaching more than on the final outcomes. The data …
The Social And Cultural Meanings Of Names In Late Antique Italy, 313-604, Eric Ware
The Social And Cultural Meanings Of Names In Late Antique Italy, 313-604, Eric Ware
Masters Theses
This thesis examines many uses of names in Italian culture and society between the years 313 and 604. Through an anthroponymic study of names in Late Antique Italy, I explore the relationships between names and religion, social groups, gender, and language. I analyze the name patterns statistically and through micro-historical studies. This thesis argues that, contrary to studies emphasizing the late antique decline of the Roman trinominal system, Italian names demonstrated continuity with classical onomastic practices. The correlations between saint’s cults and local names and the decline of pagan names suggests that saints’ names replaced pagan ones as apotropaic names …

Understanding The Lived Experience Of Late-Entry English Learners In The Vista Canyon Unified School District, Joseph W. Boffa
Understanding The Lived Experience Of Late-Entry English Learners In The Vista Canyon Unified School District, Joseph W. Boffa
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Many researchers have attempted to identify best practices, habits, and conditions of English Language Learners (ELs, ELLs) pertaining to school success. It is clear EL students pose unique and significant challenges, yet unclear what strategies and program models educators can implement to motivate learning, improve educational experiences, and appropriately acknowledge and reward these learners’ accomplishments. Few studies have attempted to determine the difficulties and challenges associated with academic success and probability of graduation for Late-entry English Learners (LEELs), defined as those entering the school system as eighth-through-twelfth grade students. Their test scores weigh heavily on high-stakes standardized testing accountability measures. …
Tspoons: Tracking Salience Profiles Of Online News Stories, Kimberly Laurel Paterson
Tspoons: Tracking Salience Profiles Of Online News Stories, Kimberly Laurel Paterson
Master's Theses
News space is a relatively nebulous term that describes the general discourse concerning events that affect the populace. Past research has focused on qualitatively analyzing news space in an attempt to answer big questions about how the populace relates to the news and how they respond to it. We want to ask when do stories begin? What stories stand out among the noise? In order to answer the big questions about news space, we need to track the course of individual stories in the news. By analyzing the specific articles that comprise stories, we can synthesize the information gained from …

Predicting Music Genre Preferences Based On Online Comments, Andrew J. Sinclair
Master's Theses
Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) states that individuals adapt to each other’s communicative behaviors. This adaptation is called “convergence.” In this work we explore the convergence of writing styles of users of the online music distribution plat- form SoundCloud.com. In order to evaluate our system we created a corpus of over 38,000 comments retrieved from SoundCloud in April 2014. The corpus represents comments from 8 distinct musical genres: Classical, Electronic, Hip Hop, Jazz, Country, Metal, Folk, and World. Our corpus contains: short comments, frequent misspellings, little sentence struc- ture, hashtags, emoticons, and URLs. We adapt techniques used by researchers analyzing other …

Engaging Youth: Linking Design And Implementation Choices Of Out-Of-School Time Programs In Boston To The Development Of Political Engagement Attitudes In Youth Age 14 To 18, Felicia M. Sullivan
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Tens of thousands of youth in communities across the United States are engaged every day in out-of-school time (OST) programs. These young people seek opportunities to recreate and socially engage, enhance academic and leadership skills, express themselves creatively, explore important issues in their communities, and work toward affecting change. These programs provide important institutional learning environments in which young people begin to assimilate their roles as political actors and citizens. As the delivery of social services and public programs has increasingly devolved from the government to the nonprofit sector, these programs also shape how young people come to understand their …

The purpose of my study was to explore the role of cultural values in the lived experiences of Latino college and university presidents at four-year higher education institutions and to determine how cultural values contributed to and reflected their professional strengths. Using the Community Cultural Wealth framework developed by Tara Yosso (2005) to capture the assets or forms of capital that people of color bring with them to all settings, this study utilized a strengths-based approach to examine the ways in which Latino higher education executives translated their cultural upbringing and values into skills and approaches that facilitated their ascension …
Russian Women And Belly Dancing: Body Work, Fun And Transformation, Galina Khartulari
Russian Women And Belly Dancing: Body Work, Fun And Transformation, Galina Khartulari
College of Communication Theses and Dissertations
The study explores how Russian women’s socio-cultural experiences can be understood through belly dancing and transformed in belly dance classes. The study findings are based on the analysis of eleven interviews with Russian women of various ages and occupations, engaged in belly dancing for an extended period of time. Drawing on belly dancing as an embodied practice within the Russian context, the findings demonstrate that initial expectations of Russian women regarding belly dancing mutated over time, and new meanings were attached to this bodily practice. The emergent meanings are broadly conceptualized within the following dimensions: (1) remedial effects of belly …

Opening Our Eyes: How Activist Women In Ecuador Learn Critical Political And Self-Aware Consciousness, Dana Michelle Hill
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation seeks to answer two questions: "How are different aspects of consciousness learned and relearned by members of women's organizations in Ecuador?" and "How do women's critical political and self-aware consciousnesses impact their organizations and their ability to build relationships based on solidarity?" Critical political consciousness is defined as awareness of hegemonic social structures and their relationship to intersectional embodied identities, accompanied by a desire for equality and justice. Critical self-aware consciousness is understood as awareness of: one's own public and subjective identities; agency; how life experiences affect different aspects of the self; and the interconnectedness of individuals, communities, …

New Media, Multiliteracies, And The Globalized Classroom, Santosh Khadka
Dissertations - ALL
New Media, Multiliteracies, and the Globalized Classroom contends that changing demographic diversity in American higher education and increasing globalization call for curricular and pedagogical transformation of writing courses. The writing curriculum for "globalized classrooms" should be responsive to the resources students bring with them to the classroom and cultivate in them the multiple literacies--both old and new--needed to successfully navigate an increasingly global workplace and a complexly interwoven world. The scaffolding of students' natural meaning making capacities, and teaching of multiple literacies, such as visual, academic, critical, digital, multimodal, and intercultural, should take place simultaneously in the writing classes for …

Human Use Of Computers Framework: Assessment Using The Computer Procrastination Problem, Nick Breems
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
As more and more human living involves interacting with various computer systems, it becomes increasingly important to understand the full picture of what is involved in such computer use. Without such an understanding, we will be limited in our ability to either design systems and practices which maximize benefit and human flourishing, or to recognize, understand, and address dysfunction where it occurs. Basden’s (2008) Human Use of Computers Framework provides a structure for considering many facets of computer use. Based on the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd, Basden’s framework considers computer use as the simultaneous functioning of a.) humans interacting with …

The Slow-Burning Genocide Of Myanmar's Rohingya, Maung Zarni, Alice Cowley
Washington International Law Journal
Since 1978, the Rohingya, a Muslim minority of Western Burma, have been subject to a state-sponsored process of destruction. The Rohingya have deep historical roots in the borderlands of Rakhine State, Myanmar, and were recognized officially both as citizens and as an ethnic group by three successive governments of post-independence Burma. In 1978, General Ne Win’s socialist military dictatorship launched the first large-scale campaign against the Rohingya in Rakhine State with the intent first of expelling them en masse from Western Burma and subsequently legalizing the systematic erasure of Rohingya group identity and legitimizing their physical destruction. This on-going process …

Investigating The Effect Of Explicit And Implicit Instruction On The Acquisition Of Verb + Noun Collocations: A Case Of L2 Egyptian Learners, Omneya Hesham Kamal
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the effect of explicit and implicit instruction on the acquisition of verb + noun collocations. It also investigates L2 learners' attitudes about learning collocations both explicitly and implicitly. Forty intermediate level Egyptian L2 learners of English were given a collocations familiarity test from which the researcher chose the 21 least familiar target collocations to include in the study. Two experimental groups composed of 20 participants each were taught the target collocations through reading, listening and speaking activities. One group was taught with the explicit method and the other was taught with the implicit method. A post-test was …
