Total Voice Leading, Joseph N. Straus Jan 2014

Total Voice Leading, Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

The total voice leading between sets X and Y is defined as the complete collection of ordered pc intervals formed between the pcs in X and the pcs in Y. These interval multisets (imultisets) describe the sonic signature of the motion from X to Y, and they always have the property of transpositional combination. In some cases, the same total voice leading may be produced by different pairs of X and Y (Cohn 1988 refers to this as “multiple parentage”). In such cases, the total voice leading may remain the same even though the generating chords differ.

An Analytical Example For Bob, Joseph N. Straus Jan 2014

An Analytical Example For Bob, Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

In the fall of 1981, I was the greenest, most naïve young music theorist you can possibly imagine. The ink on my doctoral diploma was still wet, and I had just started my first job, at the University of Wisconsin. It was a simpler, less demanding time for music theorists: I had never attended a conference, much less presented at one. But I found myself at the 1981 meeting of the newly formed Society for Music Theory in Los Angeles, giving my first-ever theory paper. I recognized Milton Babbitt, the keynote speaker for the conference, sitting right in front of …

Buenos Aires, Fernando Degiovanni, Fernando Rosenberg Jan 2014

Buenos Aires, Fernando Degiovanni, Fernando Rosenberg

Publications and Research

One of the most important city ports of the Western Hemisphere, Buenos Aires has a history inextricably connected to the fluctuations of the Atlantic economy as well as to its strategic position as a gateway to vast and fertile flatlands that extend far beyond the city limits. Founded and re-founded in the 16th century as a secondary colonial outpost, Buenos Aires was dramatically transformed by the demands of the European markets at the turn of both the 18th and 19th centuries. In this context, two crucial developments are decisive for understanding the physical, social, and cultural fabric of the city: …

Promoting Positive Youth Development: A Crash Course For Youth Ministers, Lynsey Ann Rittenbach Jan 2014

Promoting Positive Youth Development: A Crash Course For Youth Ministers, Lynsey Ann Rittenbach

Human Development and Family Science

This paper explores the role religion can play in the Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach to youth development. The relevant literature suggests there is a missing link between youth workers in religious institutions and training in youth development. The majority of youth workers (paid, volunteer, part- and full-time) in various religious institutions are not trained in youth development, particularly in the PYD approach due to lack of resources and availability. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide “a crash course for youth ministers” to gain an understanding of PYD and the role their programing and congregations can play …

Assessing Child Care Standards And Rates Of Expulsion For Problem Behaviors In Preschool Children, Monica Alma Nicklay Jan 2014

Assessing Child Care Standards And Rates Of Expulsion For Problem Behaviors In Preschool Children, Monica Alma Nicklay

Human Development and Family Science

Quality in child care programs has been studied often and researchers search to find correlations between quality measures and positive child outcomes. Some studies also show that problem behaviors result in large numbers of child expulsions in preschool age programs. The question remains whether the quality of the program produces care that lends to a lower incidence of behavior problems leading to child expulsion. The current study investigated the correlations among quality standard levels, behavior problems, and expulsion rates in a variety of child care programs in one state. Results showed that programs that are documented as having achieved the …

Age And Gender Differences In Attitudes And Knowledge About Alzheimer's Disease, Rashidat Oladotun Moreira Jan 2014

Age And Gender Differences In Attitudes And Knowledge About Alzheimer's Disease, Rashidat Oladotun Moreira

Human Development and Family Science

The purpose of this study was to examine possible age and gender discrepancies in knowledge and attitudes towards individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Data were taken from a Midwestern survey study of community-dwelling adults aged 18-88 (N=211). Participants were divided into two age groups: younger adults (ages 18-49), and older adults, encompassing the Baby Boom generation (ages 49+). The findings indicated that, relative to older adults, younger adults were: less likely to know someone with AD; less likely to make lifestyle changes to reduce their AD risk; and less factually knowledgeable about AD. However, younger adults reported more positive attitudes …

Goal Congruity Within Copreneurial Partners: An Exploration Of Family Business Continuance, Bailee Ansoph Kaul Jan 2014

Goal Congruity Within Copreneurial Partners: An Exploration Of Family Business Continuance, Bailee Ansoph Kaul

Human Development and Family Science

This study utilized data from the 1997 and 2000 waves of the National Family Business Survey to explore goal processes of 320 copreneurial and noncopreneurial family business households. Ecological systems theory (Deacon & Firebaugh, 1988) was used as a framework for the study. Copreneurial households (n = 117) were compared to noncopreneurial households (n = 203), and three variables were found to differ significantly: value orientation, business manager perception of business goal achievement, and relationship continuance. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the predictive relationship between goal congruity, other family business variables, and business continuance. None of the variables …

Self Perceptions Of Aging: Women's Views Of The Aging Process, Eryn Nichole Jager Jan 2014

Self Perceptions Of Aging: Women's Views Of The Aging Process, Eryn Nichole Jager

Human Development and Family Science

Society has generally taught women in a rather subliminal way they should remain young, thin, and beautiful (Horton, Baker, Cote, & Deakin, 2008; Mock & Eibach, 2011; Stark- Wroblewski, Edelbaum, & Bello, 2008). As the number of older adults increase, the driving forces that determine self-perceptions of aging are essential. Using a hierarchical regression analysis, the current study examined self-perceptions of aging among older adult women. For the study, 102 females (age 60 and older) in the Red River Valley area completed a survey on selfperceptions of aging. Sense of mastery was significantly related to negative self-perceptions of aging. The …

Caregivers And Environments For People With Dementia, Mary Jane Damme Jan 2014

Caregivers And Environments For People With Dementia, Mary Jane Damme

Human Development and Family Science

This paper is a report of a study to investigate the perceptions of caregivers regarding the effects of environments on the independence of a family member with dementia living in the home. The majority of persons with dementia are cared for by family members in the home. Caregiving can be stressful and rewarding to the caregiver. This study used a qualitative research design and a phenomenological approach to gather narrative information about caregiving and the home environment. Open-ended interview questions were used to gather information regarding the details of caregiver perceptions. The results of shared caregiving perceptions support previous research …

Confronting Prejudice: Identifying Factors Of Nontarget Confrontation, Lindsey Anne Boes Jan 2014

Confronting Prejudice: Identifying Factors Of Nontarget Confrontation, Lindsey Anne Boes

Human Development and Family Science

The research question for this project sought to identify factors that encouraged people to stand up to people who were discriminating against others. Seventeen students who had previously stood up against other people participated in one of three semi-structured focus groups. The analysis produced four themes, each with multiple categories which highlight factors that encouraged the participants to confront prejudice and discrimination. Main findings include the importance of connection with the individual being discriminated against, being educated about systems of oppression, perceiving discrimination as potentially harmful, and emotions such as anger, guilt, and pride. Implications for clinical work and the …

Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Corruption, David Jancsics Jan 2014

Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Corruption, David Jancsics

Publications and Research

Corruption has become one of the most popular topics in the social scientific disciplines. However, there is a lack of interdisciplinary communication about corruption. Models developed by different academic disciplines are often isolated from each other. The purpose of this paper is to review several major approaches to corruption and draw them closer to each other. Most studies of corruption fall into three major categories: (i) rational-actor models where corruption is viewed as resulting from cost/benefit analysis of individual actors; (ii) structural models that focus on external forces that determine corruption; and (iii) relational models that emphasize social interactions and …

Talking About Open Access: Smash And Subtler Tactics, Jill Cirasella Jan 2014

Talking About Open Access: Smash And Subtler Tactics, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

This slideshow covers different ways of answering the question “Why open access?” It reviews the knee-jerk reactions many people have when they hear about open access, describes the many benefits of open access, invokes @openaccesshulk’s strategy of SMASH, and discusses what arguments work best with different populations (students, faculty, administrators, etc.). Finally, it addresses why librarians should try to talk about open access without resorting to constant use of the term “open access” and describes a few ways to sneak open access advocacy into other conversations.

Speleomycological Research In Underground Osówka Complex In Sowie Mountains (Lower Silesia, Poland), Wojciech Pusz, Rafał Ogórek, Cecylia Miłowana Uklańska-Pusz, Paweł Zagożdżon Jan 2014

Speleomycological Research In Underground Osówka Complex In Sowie Mountains (Lower Silesia, Poland), Wojciech Pusz, Rafał Ogórek, Cecylia Miłowana Uklańska-Pusz, Paweł Zagożdżon

International Journal of Speleology

Osówka (Germ. Säuferhöhen), is one of the elements of the unfinished Nazi military complex called “Riese”. The total length of corridors of Osówka complex is about 1,700 m and its capacity amounts to 30,000 m3. As described geologically, Osówka is situated within the Sowie Mts. Massif which consists mostly of various gneisses with different structural characteristics, but with a constant mineral composition. The rock-forming minerals are feldspar (oligoclase), quartz, biotite and light micas, accesory minerals are garnet, sillimanite and dysten. Fine-grained shallow-sea deposits were probably a protolith of these rocks. The study aimed at first mycological evaluation of …

Orthothermographies And 3d Modeling As Potential Tools In Ice Caves Studies: The Peña Castil Ice Cave (Picos De Europa, Northern Spain), Fernando Berenguer-Sempere, Manuel Gómez-Lende, Enrique Seranno, José Juan De Sanjosé-Blasco

International Journal of Speleology

Currently there are many studies focused on the investigation of climatic and glaciological condition of ice caves. Here we present another way to address these studies, applying some methods already used in fields other than geomorphology. The versatility and accuracy provided by the use of modern topography and thermography techniques, using Terrestrial Laser Scanner and current thermographic cameras- and the creation of 3D thermographic models and orthothermographies derived from them - is shown to be a useful tool as it is difficult to obtain data from fieldwork and traditional methods used in caves. This paper presents the potential uses of …

Identification And Ss-Lactam Resistance In Aquatic Isolates Of Enterobacter Cloacae And Their Status In Microbiota Of Domica Cave In Slovak Karst (Slovakia), Barbora Gaalova, Alena Donauerova, Milan Seman, Helena Bujdakova Jan 2014

Identification And Ss-Lactam Resistance In Aquatic Isolates Of Enterobacter Cloacae And Their Status In Microbiota Of Domica Cave In Slovak Karst (Slovakia), Barbora Gaalova, Alena Donauerova, Milan Seman, Helena Bujdakova

International Journal of Speleology

Domica Cave is located in the Slovak Karst National Park in southern Slovakia. Heterotrophic cultivable psychrophilic and mesophilic microbiota were confirmed to be prevalent in this cave. Escherichia coli was the most abundant bacterium, followed by Enterobacter species and Serrratia species. Enterobacter cloacae isolates belong to the group of faecal contaminants (coliforms) of concern in water. Their status in cave ecosystem is questionable, but we observed E. cloacae in water samples all years round suggesting an autochthonous origin. We were concerned with possible contamination of the cave water with resistant E. cloacae from animal farms located 2-3 km from the …

Influence Of Soil On Groundwater Geochemistry In A Carbonate Aquifer, Southern Italy, Tiziano Boschetti, Antonio Falasca, Antonio Bucci, Vincenzo De Felice, Gino Naclerio, Fulvio Celico Jan 2014

Influence Of Soil On Groundwater Geochemistry In A Carbonate Aquifer, Southern Italy, Tiziano Boschetti, Antonio Falasca, Antonio Bucci, Vincenzo De Felice, Gino Naclerio, Fulvio Celico

International Journal of Speleology

The role of soil compositions in influencing groundwater geochemistry in carbonate aquifers is still little known. Nothing is known regarding the influence of pyroclastic soils (andisol) within the carbonate Apennines in central-southern Italy, despite their wide distribution. In this study we analyze some physical and chemical properties of pyroclastic soil at the Acqua dei Faggi experimental site (southern Italy), to assess its influence on groundwater geochemistry. Chemical analyses were carried out on saturated paste extracts and a physical analogue model was developed through two column experiments. Physico-chemical properties of rainwater and spring water, and some microbiological features of the soil …

Study Of Filled Dolines By Using 3d Stereo Image Processing And Electrical Resistivity Imaging, Mateja Breg Valjavec Jan 2014

Study Of Filled Dolines By Using 3d Stereo Image Processing And Electrical Resistivity Imaging, Mateja Breg Valjavec

International Journal of Speleology

This article deals with doline degradation due to uncontrolled waste dumping in the past in the Logatec Polje in Slovenia. It introduces a concept for determining 3D geometric characteristics (shape, depth, radius, area, and volume) of formerly concave landforms (i.e., recently filled dolines) by using a combination of two methods: (1) photogrammetric stereo processing of archival aerial photographs and (2) electrical resistivity imaging (ERI). To represent, visualize, and study the characteristics of the former surface morphology (i.e., the dolines before they were filled), a digital terrain model (DTM) for 1972 (DTM1972) was made using digital photogrammetry processing of five sequential …
