Mdct Of Small Bowel Obstruction: How Reliable Are Oblique Reformatted Images In Localizing Point Of Transition?, Wasim Memon, Yasir Jamil Khattak, Tariq Alam, Luca Maria Sconfienza, Muhammad Awais, Shayan Sirat Maheen Anwar

Department of Radiology

The goal of this study is to prospectively assess the additional value of oblique reformatted images for localizing POT, having surgery as a reference standard. Materials and Methods. 102 consecutive patients with suspected small bowel obstruction (SBO) underwent 64-slice multidetector row CT (MDCT) using surgical findings as reference standard. Two independent GI radiologists reviewed the CT scans to localize the exact POT by evaluating axial images (data set A) followed by axial, coronal, and oblique MPR images. CT findings were compared to surgical findings in terms of diagnostic performance. McNemar's test was used to detect any statistical difference in POT …

Lands Council, Karuk Tribe, And The Great Environmental Divide In The Ninth Circuit, Michael C. Blumm, Maggie Hall Jan 2014

Lands Council, Karuk Tribe, And The Great Environmental Divide In The Ninth Circuit, Michael C. Blumm, Maggie Hall

Natural Resources Journal

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the nation’s largest appellate court, with jurisdiction over 15 judicial districts and 61 million people—almost 20 percent of the nation’s population—spans from Alaska to Arizona, from Montana to Hawaii. The Ninth Circuit has a reputation for being an environmentally sensitive court, but the court is as diverse as the terrain over which it has jurisdiction. Due to its size, the court’s en banc reviews do not include all 29 judges but instead only panels of 11. Thus, Ninth Circuit en banc panels can reflect the kind of diversity of opinion they aim to reduce. …

Struggles On The Path To Renewable Energy: Lessons From Sunzia, Rachel Giron Jan 2014

Struggles On The Path To Renewable Energy: Lessons From Sunzia, Rachel Giron

Natural Resources Journal

The SunZia Southwest Transmission Project is a high-voltage transmission line under development in southern New Mexico and Arizona. The project was created to allow the expansion of the renewable energy production economy, and is also part of larger efforts at climate change mitigation. It has the support of federal and state governments, and has been fast-tracked by the Obama Administration. However, in spite of its potential to increase the availability of clean energy, conflicts between local environmental groups and government agencies over siting difficulties have impeded its development. Efforts to streamline the permitting process have been largely unsuccessful, as they …

Migrating Towards An Incidental Take Permit Program: Overhauling The Migratory Bird Treaty Act To Comport With Modern Industrial Operations, Alexander K. Obrecht Jan 2014

Migrating Towards An Incidental Take Permit Program: Overhauling The Migratory Bird Treaty Act To Comport With Modern Industrial Operations, Alexander K. Obrecht

Natural Resources Journal

In 1918, Congress passed the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) to curb mass avian extermination caused by hunting and poaching. Despite Congress’s initial concern with these activities, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) expanded the scope of MBTA enforcement to include bird deaths caused by industrial activities. This created a glaring split of authority among U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals, with one side applying strict liability under the MBTA for all deaths of protected birds caused by industrial activities and the other side refusing to apply the MBTA to indirect and unintentional bird deaths. This article argues that the …

An Environmental Conversation, William Murray Tabb Jan 2014

An Environmental Conversation, William Murray Tabb

Natural Resources Journal

Federal environmental law and policy ambitiously purports to provide clean air and water, protect endangered and threatened species, clean-up hazardous and toxic waste sites, and infuse environmental considerations into the decision-making process of all federal agencies with respect to major proposals impacting the environment. Despite such lofty goals and an expansion of the regulatory state, certain types of activities and associated risks have eluded statutory coverage. Additionally, these uncoordinated federal environmental statutes typically embody a singular and sometimes myopic focus, leading to unpredictable or undesirable regulatory gaps, constraints, and inefficiencies. Further, limitations on standing and judicial review may significantly limit …

Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma, Marianne Berwick

Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine

This study was designed to investigate whether early detection of melanoma through skin self-examination could improve chances of survival. The researchers collected data from 650 Connecticut residents with a primary cutaneous melanoma diagnosed between January 15, 1987 and May 15, 1989 and from a control group of 573 Connecticut residents selected through random digit dialing. Community College Students With Psychological Disorders And Their Perceptions Of Online Learning, Gretchen Winifred Langford Warren Jan 2014

Community College Students With Psychological Disorders And Their Perceptions Of Online Learning, Gretchen Winifred Langford Warren

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Research focusing on students with learning disabilities is abundant for secondary and higher education. Studies utilizing data on students with psychological disorders cover secondary and 4-year university education. However, community college students with psychological disorders and their perception of online classes is an area of educational research which lacks data. Students across a wide spectrum of psychological disorders tend to find learning challenging. The community college's learning environment may best fit their learning styles. With modem educational innovations, the online learning methods must take into consideration the unique psychosocial, cognitive, and academic needs of the community college student population.

Using Interactive Reading Techniques With Word World To Enhance Emergent Literacy, James B. Godfrey Jan 2014

Using Interactive Reading Techniques With Word World To Enhance Emergent Literacy, James B. Godfrey

Theses and Dissertations in Early Childhood Education

Facets of emergent literacy such as phonological awareness (PA) and alphabet knowledge (AK) are precursors to later conventional literacy (Dockrell, Stuart & King, 2010; Neuman & Dwyer, 2009; NELP, 2008). Interactive reading techniques such as dialogic reading (Whitehurst et al., 1988) and explicit print referencing (Piasta et al., 2012; Justice et al., 2010) have been used effectively with printed text to enhance emergent literacy. This quasi-experimental study was designed to determine the extent to which interactive reading techniques combined with the viewing of educational television may enhance facets of emergent literacy such as PA and AK. A convenience sample of …

The Effect Of Global English On Culture And Identity In The Uae: A Double-Edged Sword, Sarah Hopkyns

All Works

The United Arab Emirates' complex history, its current demographics, its youthfulness as a country, and the fact that it is a region undergoing fast-paced change make the issue of cultural identity particularly relevant and urgent in this part of the world. This is especially true given the rapid spread of English in the sphere of education and everyday life in recent years. This paper discusses the above issues before analyzing the attitudes and perceptions of female Emirati university students and female Emirati primary school teachers with regard to global English and its effects on local culture and identity. After analysis …

Qualified Dublin Core And The Scholarly Works Application Profile: A Practical Comparison, Dustin M. Vogel Jan 2014

Qualified Dublin Core And The Scholarly Works Application Profile: A Practical Comparison, Dustin M. Vogel

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper explores the notion that records created with the Scholarly Works Application Profile will be more accurate and better suited for academia than those created with Qualified Dublin Core. This is accomplished by comparing and contrasting records of scholarly articles created with Qualified Dublin Core and records for the same documents created with the Scholarly Works Application Profile. After this practical comparison, the ultimate conclusion reached is that creating records for scholarly works with SWAP is much easier than with QDC, and that the records themselves are indeed better designed for academia.
