Development Of A Bead-Based Suspension Array For Detection And Differentiation Of Salmonella Spp. In Poultry, Muhsin Aydin

Student Theses and Dissertations

Salmonella is the leading cause of foodborne illnesses in the United States. Recent outbreaks associated with Salmonella-contaminated foods and related economic loss show the need for effective strategies to control Salmonella in foods. Because of deleterious effects of Salmonella on public health and economy, it is highly desirable to develop a detection method that can identify Salmonella in food with good sensitivity and rapidity. The goal of this study was to develop a sensitive, rapid, and specific bead-based multiplexing array system to identify Salmonella at the serotype level as a method of effectively monitoring food samples for the presence of …

Synthesizing An Agent-Based Heterogeneous Population Model For Epidemic Surveillance, Madiha Sahar, Nadra Guizani, S Besalamah, M.N. Ayyaz, M. Ahmad, T. Mustafa, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we propose a probabilistic approach to synthesize an agent-based heterogeneous population interaction model to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of an air-born epidemic, such as influenza, in a metropolitan area. The methodology is generic in nature and can generate a baseline population for cities for which detailed population summary tables are not available. The joint probabilities of population demographics are estimated using the International Public Use Microsimulation Data (IPUMS) sample data set. Agents, are assigned various activities based on several characteristics. The agent-based model for the city of Lahore, Pakistan is synthesized and a rule based disease spread …

Introduction. The variables that predispose to postcranioplasty infections are poorly described in the literature. We formulated a multivariate model that predicts the risk of infection in patients undergoing cranioplasty. Method. Retrospective review of all patients who underwent cranioplasty following craniectomy from January, 2000, to December, 2011. Tested predictors were age, sex, diabetic status, hypertensive status, reason for craniectomy, urgency status of craniectomy, location of cranioplasty, reoperation for hematoma, hydrocephalus postcranioplasty, and material type. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Results. Three hundred forty-eight patients met the study criteria. Infection rate was 26.43% (92/348). Of these cases with infection, 56.52% …

Differentiating Geo-Spatiotemporal Aquatic Larval Habitats Of Anopheles Gambiae Complex In Urban Agriculture And Urban Non-Agriculture Environments In Accra, Ghana, Samia Mckeever

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To meet the rising food demands of communities in Accra,Ghana, urban agriculture has been popularized as a way to increase food security and improve nutrition (Donovan et al., 2012). Urban agriculture is defined as "the cultivation of crops at both the subsistence and commercial levels including the keeping of livestock in open spaces in urban areas (Adjaye, n.d.). In Accra, urban agriculture covers 1,091 hectares, employs over one thousand people, and supplies residents with 90% of its vegetables ("Accra Metropolitan", n.d.). Further, 60% of households in Accra participate in backyard farming ("Accra Metropolitan", n.d.). Although urban agriculture provides many benefits …

If asked, what would a pharmacist’s justification be for entering the profession? For many, that answer would be, “I wanted a career where I could help people.” Pharmacy is an excellent way to meet that goal, but it is frustrating at times. One such situation is when patients cannot afford their prescriptions. Even the most altruistic pharmacist cannot stay in business if drugs are given out for free. As a result, patients with no means to pay may leave the pharmacy without their medications, opting to forgo care. Of course, that has the potential to endanger their health if these …

Background

Long-term homologous and temporary heterologous protection from dengue virus (DENV) infection may be mediated by neutralizing antibodies. However, neutralizing antibody titers (NTs) have not been clearly associated with protection from infection.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Data from two geographic cluster studies conducted in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand were used for this analysis. In the first study (2004–2007), cluster investigations of 100-meter radius were triggered by DENV-infected index cases from a concurrent prospective cohort. Subjects between 6 months and 15 years old were evaluated for DENV infection at days 0 and 15 by DENV PCR and IgM ELISA. In the second study (2009–2012), …

Assessing Differences In Species Susceptibility To Phocine Distemper Virus (Pdv) In Harp (Phoca Groenlandica), Harbor (Phoca Vitulina Concolor) And Gray Seals (Halichoerus Grypus) Of The Northwest Atlantic, Andrea Bogomolni

Doctoral Dissertations

The recent emergence of morbillivirus in marine mammals as the etiology of several large scale mortality events raised questions about the role of immunosuppressive persistent organic pollutants and natural toxins in the severity, extent and duration of events. A morbillivirus of marine mammals, Phocine distemper virus (PDV), had devastating population level effects in Europe in 1988 and 2002. In 2006, a new isolate of PDV was determined to be responsible for mortality during the 2006 Northeast US Pinniped Unusually Mortality Event. The recent North American PDV mortality event provided a means to test several hypotheses designed to increase our overall …

A Case Of Cutaneous Larva Migrans Presenting In A Pregnant Patient., Kasie Kudrewicz, Kylee N Crittenden, Alison Himes

Women’s Health Articles

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a pruritic dermatitis caused by migration of the animal hookworm larvae into the epidermis. We present a case of CLM in a 31-year-old pregnant woman. The treatment of CLM relies on antihelminthic agents, such as thiabendazole, albendazole, and ivermectin. This case was interesting in that the standard treatment options previously mentioned were contraindicated owing to the patient's pregnancy. Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen resulted in complete resolution of her lesion and symptoms.

Primary Cytomegalovirus-Related Eosinophilic Pneumonia In A Three-Year-Old Child With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia : Case Report And Literature Review, Mohammed Al Reesi, N/A, Amal Paul, George, Sumaiah Al-Arimi

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

A diagnosis of eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) is rare in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). We report a case of EP in association with a primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in a three-yearold Omani child with ALL. The patient presented with fever while undergoing maintenance chemotherapy. He was admitted to the Child Health Department of Royal Hospital, in Muscat, Oman, in November 2011. He was initially thought to have sepsis but failed to respond to antibiotics. Chest computed tomography showed diffuse ground glass lung opacification. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cytology was consistent with the diagnosis of EP. Polymerase chain reaction tests for …
