Antibacterial Activity Of Novel Cationic Peptides Against Clinical Isolates Of Multi-Drug Resistant Staphylococcus Pseudintermedius From Infected Dogs, Mohamed F. Mohamed, G. Kenitra Hammac, Lynn F. Guptil, Mohamed N. Seleem Dec 2014

Antibacterial Activity Of Novel Cationic Peptides Against Clinical Isolates Of Multi-Drug Resistant Staphylococcus Pseudintermedius From Infected Dogs, Mohamed F. Mohamed, G. Kenitra Hammac, Lynn F. Guptil, Mohamed N. Seleem

Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a major cause of skin and soft tissue infections in companion animals and has zoonotic potential. Additionally, methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) has emerged with resistance to virtually all classes of antimicrobials. Thus, novel treatment options with new modes of action are required. Here, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of six synthetic short peptides against clinical isolates of methicillin-susceptible and MRSP isolated from infected dogs. All six peptides demonstrated potent antistaphylococcal activity regardless of existing resistance phenotype. The most effective peptides were RRIKA (with modified C terminus to increase amphipathicity and hydrophobicity) and WR-12 (α-helical peptide consisting exclusively …

Status Of The Santa Catalina Island Fox Thirteen Years After Its Decline, Julie L. King, Calvin L. Duncan, David K. Garcelon Dec 2014

Status Of The Santa Catalina Island Fox Thirteen Years After Its Decline, Julie L. King, Calvin L. Duncan, David K. Garcelon

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

Santa Catalina Island was home to an estimated 1342 adult island foxes (Urocyon littoralis catalinae) in 1990. Nine years later, fox sightings declined and reports of dead or dying foxes increased. An island-wide trapping effort was initiated after a fox carcass tested positive for Canine distemper virus (CDV). In 1999, only 10 foxes were captured east of the Two Harbors isthmus during 1046 trap-nights. A multifaceted conservation plan was implemented in 2000 to conserve the Santa Catalina population of island fox. Initial recovery actions took place from 2000 to 2005 and resulted in the translocation of 22 juvenile …

During the past decades, anticancer immunotherapy has evolved from a promising therapeutic option to a robust clinical reality. Many immunotherapeutic regimens are now approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for use in cancer patients, and many others are being investigated as standalone therapeutic interventions or combined with conventional treatments in clinical studies. Immunotherapies may be subdivided into "passive" and "active" based on their ability to engage the host immune system against cancer. Since the anticancer activity of most passive immunotherapeutics (including tumor-targeting monoclonal antibodies) also relies on the host immune system, this classification …

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: There is an increasing evidence suggesting that high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) was involved in cancers other than cervical cancer. A number of reports have identified HPV DNA in breast tissue and breast cancer specimens, suggesting that the virus could play a role in the pathogenesis of this tumor. Therefore, OBJECTIVE: was directed towards the use of In situ molecular methods to localize the virus in mammary gland tissue. In addition, this study investigated the prevalence of high-risk HPV18 infections in Iraqi women with and without ductal carcinoma of the breast. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty night cases of …

On The Front Foot: An Australian Health And Physical Education (Hpe) Perspective., Tj Lynch Dec 2014

On The Front Foot: An Australian Health And Physical Education (Hpe) Perspective., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

When considering the theme ‘Towards building a new sport system’, it is important that as for any structure, there are strong foundations. Sport is a logical extension of a school’s physical education (PE) program (Commonwealth of Australia, 1992). Furthermore, research suggests that the optimum time for children to learn and refine their motor skills and to be introduced to positive PE experiences is during preschool and early primary school years. It is therefore argued that to build an ideal sport system, as suggested by the title, we need to ‘begin on the front foot’ through quality Health and Physical Education …

Characterization Of Salmonella Enterica Isolates From Food And Clinical Samples: Functionality Of Cytolethal Distending Toxin (Cdt) From Non-Typhi Salmonella Enterica, Ezat Hussain Mezal

Theses and Dissertations

Salmonella enterica is recognized worldwide as a significant cause of both human and animal disease. Recently, many random outbreaks of infections associated with the pathogens have been documented. Thus, state of the art molecular tools are necessary to conduct effective surveillance that would aid monitoring and prevention of disease. In this study, 110 Salmonella enterica serovars (Enteritidis & Javiana) strains isolated from food, environmental and clinical samples were analyzed for genetic diversity, antibiotic resistance, presence of virulence genes, plasmids, and plasmid replicon types. To assess the genetic diversity, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) fingerprinting, multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) and …

Gut Microbiota-Derived Short-Chain Fatty Acids, T Cells, And Inflammation, Chang Kim, Jeongho Park, Myunghoo Kim Dec 2014

Gut Microbiota-Derived Short-Chain Fatty Acids, T Cells, And Inflammation, Chang Kim, Jeongho Park, Myunghoo Kim

Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications

T cells are central players in the regulation of adaptive immunity and immune tolerance. In the periphery, T cell differentiation for maturation and effector function is regulated by a number of factors. Various factors such as antigens, co-stimulation signals, and cytokines regulate T cell differentiation into functionally specialized effector and regulatory T cells. Other factors such as nutrients, micronutrients, nuclear hormones and microbial products provide important environmental cues for T cell differentiation. A mounting body of evidence indicates that the microbial metabolites short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) have profound effects on T cells and directly and indirectly regulate their differentiation. We …

Resolution Of Anaemia In A Cohort Of Hiv-Infected Patients With A High Prevalence And Incidence Of Tuberculosis Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy In South Africa, Andrew D. Kerkhoff, Robin Wood, Frank G. Cobelens, Ankur Gupta-Wright, Linda-Gail Bekker, Stephen D. Lawn

Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

Anaemia is frequently associated with both HIV-infection and HIV-related tuberculosis (TB) in antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve patients in sub-Saharan Africa and is strongly associated with poor prognosis. However, the effect of ART on the resolution of anaemia in patient cohorts with a high prevalence and incidence of tuberculosis is incompletely defined and the impact of TB episodes on haemoglobin recovery has not previously been reported. We therefore examined these issues using data from a well-characterised cohort of patients initiating ART in South Africa.

Methods

Prospectively collected clinical and haematological data were retrospectively analysed from patients receiving ART in a South …

In The Social Amoeba, Dictyostelium Discoideum , Density, Not Farming Status, Determines Predatory Success On Unpalatable Escherichia Coli, Susanne Disalvo, Debra A. Brock, Jeff Smith, David C. Queller, Joan E. Strassmann

Biology Faculty Research

Background
The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum interacts with bacteria in a variety of ways. It is a predator of bacteria, can be infected or harmed by bacteria, and can form symbiotic associations with bacteria. Some clones of D. discoideum function as primitive farmers because they carry bacteria through the normally sterile D. discoideum social stage, then release them after dispersal so the bacteria can proliferate and be harvested. Some farmer-associated bacteria produce small molecules that promote host farmer growth but inhibit the growth of non-farmer competitors. To test whether the farmers’ tolerance is specific or extends to other growth inhibitory …

Labor In A Hopeless Land: The Daughters Of Charity And Hansen's Disease Patients At The Louisiana Leper Home, 1896-1926, Reagan Laiche

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Miracle of Carville, as the late 1930’s and 1940’s have been called, is considered the pivotal point for those isolated with leprosy at the National Leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana. Scholars, researchers and folklorists alike have grappled with these decades as providing the environment in which patient reform was cultivated and eventually sown without a serious consideration of the labor and advocacy of the Sisters missioned there.

Understanding the multiple roles of the Sisters at the Louisiana Leper Home, those of home makers, care takers and patient advocates, provides the foundation for the patient reforms won during the Miracle of …

Electro-Disinfection Of Municipal Waste Water Using Direct Current, Julio A. Acosta Vega

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Wastewater treatment has always been a problem to human settlers. Events such as the great stink of London during the summer of 1858 have pushed engineers into developing new technologies to deal with such wastes in effective and safe ways. Research projects like this aim to find ways of improving performance, economics, or environmental friendliness of treatment and disinfection methods.

This thesis deals with the effectiveness, mechanisms of action, by-products and side effects of using DC current to disinfect secondary effluent. It is proposed as an alternative to conventional methods, such as chlorination, which are not always environmentally friendly or …

Alaska Native Perceptions Of Food, Health, And Community Well-Being: Challenging Nutritional Colonialism, Melanie Lindholm

Arctic and Northern Studies

Alaska Native populations have undergone relatively rapid changes in nearly every aspect of life over the past half century. Overall lifestyles have shifted from subsistence-based to wage-based, from traditional to Western, and from self-sustainability to reliance on Outside sources. My research investigates the effects of these changes on health and well-being. The literature appears to lack concern for and documentation of Native peoples' perceptions of the changes in food systems and effects on their communities. Additionally, there is a lack of studies specific to Alaska Native individual perceptions of health and well-being. Therefore, my research aims to help identify social …

(Un)Wrapping Felix Gonzalez-Torres: The Relational Power And Contagious Wonderment Of Candy And Other Things, Brooke Clark

Honors Theses

Huddled in the corner of the cold, sterile floor of The Art Institute of Chicago, Felix Gonzalez-Torres's Untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.), 1991 is a mound of individually wrapped, multihued candy that can be possessed, consumed, and rearranged by the audience (artic.edu). The parenthetical remark within the title suggests the portrait is that of a human. In fact, Ross was the artist's lover, who died of AIDS in the year 1991. The candy spill memorializes Ross at his healthy weight of one hundred seventy-five pounds. Even as Ross's body is implicated in the candy, the candies themselves contain and …

Periodontal Microorganisms, Obesity, Chronic Inflammation, And Type 1 Diabetes, Georges Joseph Nahhas Dec 2014

Periodontal Microorganisms, Obesity, Chronic Inflammation, And Type 1 Diabetes, Georges Joseph Nahhas

Theses and Dissertations

Periodontal disease is a low-grade chronic inflammation in the tissues surrounding the teeth caused by multiple, mostly gram-negative pathogens. It is associated with diabetes, obesity, and chronic inflammation. The specific roles that periodontal microorganism play in these conditions are not well-studied. Hereby, we explored how periodontal bacteria from sub gingival plaque clustered in youth with and without type 1 diabetes, and how such patterns related to body-mass-index percentile (BMI percentile), C-reactive protein (CRP) and adiponectin. Cross-sectional data were collected from 105 youth with type 1 diabetes and 71 without diabetes. Participants were between 12 and 19 years of age receiving …

Diversity, Genetics, And Health Benefits Of Sorghum Grain, Davina Rhodes Dec 2014

Diversity, Genetics, And Health Benefits Of Sorghum Grain, Davina Rhodes

Theses and Dissertations

Staple cereal crops provide the majority of nutrients to the world's population, and thus, can significantly impact human nutrition and health. Phenotypic and genetic diversity within a crop can be useful for biofortification and crop improvement, but quantitative phenotyping is needed to identify varieties with high or low concentrations of a nutrient of interest, and to identify alleles responsible for quantitative trait variation of the nutrient. Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is a diverse and widely adapted cereal crop that provides food for more than 500 million people in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, and is becoming increasingly popular in specialty …

When Life Happens: Theatres Of Hiv And Complexity In South Africa, Jessica S. Ruthven Dec 2014

When Life Happens: Theatres Of Hiv And Complexity In South Africa, Jessica S. Ruthven

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines theatre as part of an artistic movement in South Africa to address the social, structural, and emotional repercussions of HIV, as well as a space in which knowledge about HIV/AIDS is actively created, mediated, reproduced, challenged, and presented for public consumption. Although applied theatre has a long history in the country, I focus on innovation in recent theatrical practices that have occurred as artists and members of broader civil society struggle to understand the trajectory of the country's AIDS epidemic and question the scope of popular national HIV intervention campaigns. I use emerging forms of cultural production …
