The Development Of Czech Aspectual Prefixes Through Grammaticalization And Lexicalization Processes, Pavlina Peskova Jul 2014

The Development Of Czech Aspectual Prefixes Through Grammaticalization And Lexicalization Processes, Pavlina Peskova

Linguistics ETDs

This masters thesis investigates the development of aspectual prefixes in Czech. The analysis in this work incorporates diachronic and synchronic perspectives and presents a theory about the path of development of aspectual prefixes in the framework of construction grammar. It draws from a central notion that grammar emerges from discourse and argues that the development of aspectual prefixes in Czech was fundamentally based in language use and processing. The synchronic layering of prefixed predicates in Czech provides evidence that the development of aspectual prefixes progressed gradually and suggests that grammaticalization and lexicalization processes took place. The analysis in this study …

Zola’S Spatial Explorations Of Second Empire Paris, Julia Kröger Jul 2014

Zola’S Spatial Explorations Of Second Empire Paris, Julia Kröger

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Literary criticism now has several decades of intense research on spatiality behind it. Yet it was only with the paradigm shift of the so-called "spatial turn" (Soja 1989: 39; Jameson 1991: 154) that new ideas regarding the interrelation of space as both conceived and perceived, the dialectics of space and place, and the significance of both to human experience, began to be systematically developed (see Foucault 1984; Lefebvre 2000; Relph 1976; Detering et al. 2012: Lotman 1972; Bachtin 2008). The central premise of much of this work is that space and place are produced through a dialectical interaction …

The Application Of Ecosystem Thresholds In The Management Of Tropical Coral Reefs: A Review And Synthesis, Alexandra Leeper

The Plymouth Student Scientist

A review and synthesis was carried out on the extensive literature concerned with ecosystem thresholds on tropical coral reefs to collate research carried out globally, and highlight gaps in the existing knowledge. This study aims to inform the future management of ecosystem thresholds of tropical coral reefs. Information was gathered from existing literature concerning ecosystem thresholds at named tropical coral reef locations and the distribution of studies was mapped in order to draw conclusions about the state of threshold research on coral reefs, and to make recommendations for future research and management. The synthesis highlighted the negative influence of removing …

Assessing The Archaeological Resources Of Mormon Nauvoo With Three-Dimensional Geophysical Imaging, John H. Mcbride

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The principal objective of the project was to provide BYU students with the experience of exploring Nauvoo using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in order to gain a better appreciation of early Mormon history from a geophysical and archaeological perspective. The objective was met by carrying out two field seasons in Nauvoo. In addition, the grant partially funded a field expedition to the LDS Far West Burying Grounds and Hawn’s Mill sites in Missouri in order to perform surveying work analogous to that performed in Nauvoo. Additional funding for this project was provided by the LDS Church History Department, which allowed more …

Unexpected Dramatic Change In Psychotherapy: Comparing Three Methods, Joseph Richard Horner Jul 2014

Unexpected Dramatic Change In Psychotherapy: Comparing Three Methods, Joseph Richard Horner

Theses and Dissertations

Unexpected dramatic changes in psychotherapy have been observed historically and tied to high recovery rates. Many different methodologies that identify these changes are assumed to be capturing similar or identical phenomena. This study compared three methods – Sudden Gains (SG), Percentage Increase – 50% (PI-50%), and Rapid Response (RR) - in a large database looking for similarities and differences. Results suggest that there are significant differences between SG, RR, and PI-50 as methods for operationally defining unexpected dramatic treatment response, and caution should be used when referring to SG, PI-50, and RR as the same phenomenon or interchangeable terms for …

To Each His Own Reality: How The Analysis Of Artistic Exchanges In Cold War Europe Challenges Categories, Mathilde Arnoux

Artl@s Bulletin

How to reconstruct artistic relationships among four European countries, situated on both sides of the Iron Curtain, during the period that commenced post-Stalin and lasted until the fall of the Berlin Wall? This is one of the questions that faces the research program To Each His Own Reality: The notion of the real in the art of France, West Germany, East Germany and Poland between 1960 and 1989, which was initiated in January 2011. The paper discusses syntheses of the questions that the research team is facing, descriptions of its methodology, an analysis of preliminary results and what they allow …

Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos Jun 2014

Space-And-Place Modelling-And-Making: A Dialogue Between Design And Geography, Robert Harland, Maria Loschiavo Dos Santos

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Geography and design have much in common. Both draw from or reflect science, social science, humanities, and employ sophisticated technology to achieve their aims. However, aside from a mutual interest in urbanism, there appears to have be little collaboration between the two. And yet some aspire for design to learn from geography. In this paper we explore how the characteristics associated with geography and design may function together in a space-and-place modelling-and-making dialectic.

Design And The Projecting Of The New, Mads Nygaard Folkmann Jun 2014

Design And The Projecting Of The New, Mads Nygaard Folkmann

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper is a theoretical contribution to the discussion of projection in design and is, beyond the paper, a part of a larger discussion of meaning creation in design. The paper discusses the paradoxical situation in projecting the new and unknown as all projection necessarily is bound to a starting point in the given. Nevertheless, design offers a series of methods for projecting. The paper proposes five models in design that have attempted at organizing experience in a new way and aimed at offering a projection into a future with a concrete starting point and an abstract intention of carrying …

An Historical Perspective To Examine How Federal Policy Influenced The Definition And Evaluation Of Teacher Effectiveness Since 1950, Janine M. Mathesz Jun 2014

An Historical Perspective To Examine How Federal Policy Influenced The Definition And Evaluation Of Teacher Effectiveness Since 1950, Janine M. Mathesz

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Increased public demand to hold teachers accountable for student learning and to remove ineffective teachers has challenged state department of education officials to develop teacher evaluation systems that include student assessment data. Many educational researchers theorize teacher effectiveness is the variable under the control of the school with the most influence on student success.

This study examines the influence of federal government education policies on state teacher evaluation systems and how this influence has shaped the definition and evaluation of an effective teacher over the past 62 years. Teacher evaluations, when used as a proper tool, assist administrators in providing …

Scholarly Societies, Scholarly Publishing, And The New Information Ecology, Robert Kieft, Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Brandon Nordin, Steven C. Wheatley

Charleston Library Conference

Since the founding of the Royal Society in the 1660s and with the development of disciplinary fields in the later nineteenth century, scholarly societies have established themselves as mediators of the professional lives of faculty and as vital components of the ecology of scholarly communication. In their interactions with libraries, societies may appear primarily as publishers of newsletters, books, reports, journals, indexes, and databases, but they also promote the creation and diffusion of knowledge by serving as hubs for professional activity, contributors to the making of public policy and opinion, providers of education, representatives of the interests of their members, …

Antiquarianism & Authority: The Period Instrument Revival Through The Lens Of Modernism, Maia W. Perez Jun 2014

Antiquarianism & Authority: The Period Instrument Revival Through The Lens Of Modernism, Maia W. Perez

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This thesis examines the Period Instrument Revival of early 20th century England through a lens of contemporaneous Modernist thought, specifically in how each movement addresses its conflicted relationship with the musical past. It centers on Arnold Dolmetsch, the primary instigator of the Revival, and through this exploration of his reception and his works in a Modernist context, unveils the Revival's continuous struggle to subvert Modernist societal isolation and instead actively attempt to connect with and influence both musical and larger English culture and society. Finally, it presents a case for the enduring influence of Arnold Dolmetsch not just as one …

Cologne Carnival's "Alternative" Stunksitzung: Carnivalization? Meta-Carnival? Or Bakhtinian Restoration?, Erik Abbott Jun 2014

Cologne Carnival's "Alternative" Stunksitzung: Carnivalization? Meta-Carnival? Or Bakhtinian Restoration?, Erik Abbott

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the 1820s, Carnival in Cologne, Germany, underwent a series of reforms, ostensibly to bring the festival back to the people. Among the traditions that developed was the Sitzung, a theatrical variety-show event, with music, comic speeches and sketches, dance troupes, and various additional Carnival-related entertainments. The shows, and Carnival itself were, and largely have been since that time, mostly overseen by a Festival Committee and the official Carnival Societies it recognizes.

In 1984, a group of mostly students decided to create their own version of a Sitzung, an alternative version, the Stunksitzung. From three inaugural performances, it has grown …

Americanization Of The Common Law: The Intellectual Migration Meets The Great Migration, David Thomas Konig Jun 2014

Americanization Of The Common Law: The Intellectual Migration Meets The Great Migration, David Thomas Konig

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This essay is an appreciation of William E. Nelson’s Americanization of the Common Law: The Impact of Legal Change on Massachusetts Society, 1760–1830 (1975) and the complementary study published six years later as Dispute and Conflict Resolution in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, 1725–1825 (1981). The essay places Nelson’s research project in the immediate context of historical writing on colonial New England at the time of their publication but steps back from that narrow context to identify the significance of the book in the long trajectory of great legal historical writing on the Anglo-American legal tradition.

Framing The Fight: Women's Use Of Rhetorical Coercion To Gain Political Empowerment From Revolutionary Participation—The Cases Of El Salvador, Guatemala, And Eritrea, Kyleanne M. Hunter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The below paper examines women’s ability to translate participation in antigovernment movement into political empowerment in the post-conflict government. I use the theory of Rhetorical Coercion to explore how the way in which women frame their participation impacts their ability to achieve increased political empowerment. I find that nationalistic frames are more successful than women’s-specific frames in women’s ability to achieve full empowerment and lasting rights. Using the cases of El Salvador, Guatemala and Eritrea I explore the inputs to a successful rhetorical strategy and the stumbling blocks to translating participation into national inclusion.

Rediscovering "Law" In Myanmar: A Review Of Scholarship On The Legal System Of Myanmar, Melissa Crouch

Washington International Law Journal

Myanmar’s legal system is an understudied area in the academic field of Asian Legal Studies. This article aims to provide a map of legal scholarship in Myanmar that can be built on in the future. It identifies the key issues and arguments that have driven research on law in Myanmar, and the central academics whose oeuvre of publications have sustained the field. It is organized around four broad themes: custom, religion, and the law; public law and governance; corporate law; and the politics of law. It suggests that in order to build the next generation of legal scholarship, future research …

The Social And Cultural Meanings Of Names In Late Antique Italy, 313-604, Eric Ware Jun 2014

The Social And Cultural Meanings Of Names In Late Antique Italy, 313-604, Eric Ware

Masters Theses

This thesis examines many uses of names in Italian culture and society between the years 313 and 604. Through an anthroponymic study of names in Late Antique Italy, I explore the relationships between names and religion, social groups, gender, and language. I analyze the name patterns statistically and through micro-historical studies. This thesis argues that, contrary to studies emphasizing the late antique decline of the Roman trinominal system, Italian names demonstrated continuity with classical onomastic practices. The correlations between saint’s cults and local names and the decline of pagan names suggests that saints’ names replaced pagan ones as apotropaic names …

This book sets out to do exactly what the title says it does--explore the First Vision. For most readers, that exploration will take them places they have not yet seen. Writings by many well-known Church scholars are brought together to give a broader and deeper meaning to the genesis event of the Restoration. Contributors include scholars such as Steven C. Harper, John W. Welch, Milton V. Backman Jr., Richard Lloyd Anderson, and Larry C. Porter. Their qualifications, research, and insights are impressive, and they have strived, in an evenhanded and rigorous way, to achieve the "coupling [of] historical study with …

‘The Sacred Spark Of Wonder’: Local Museums, Australian Curriculum History, And Pre-Service Primary Teacher Education: A Tasmanian Case Study, Peter Brett

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article explores the intersections between museum learning – in a distinctive Tasmanian setting, the possibilities of a new national History curriculum, and the evolving views and professional practices of pre-service primary teachers at one Australian university. Following a brief overview of the framework for local and Australian history that is embedded in the ACH, the relevant literature around museum education, and the specific museum context, the article draws upon a survey of second year pre-service primary teachers’ views towards history, museums, and a pedagogical planning task and analyses features of students’ work. It concludes with some wider reflections on …
