So You Want To Find A Transitional House For Sexually Violent Persons: An Account Of Political Failure, Stan Stojkovic, Mary Ann Farkas
So You Want To Find A Transitional House For Sexually Violent Persons: An Account Of Political Failure, Stan Stojkovic, Mary Ann Farkas
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Many states passed legislation in the 1990s to address the problem of violent sex offenders. While academic inquiries into the nature and extent of sexual offending have revealed some interesting findings, very little is known regarding how communities address the issue of managing violent sex offenders. This account documents how the state of Wisconsin attempted to manage violent sex offenders once released from prison and civilly committed under a sexually violent person statute. It chronicles the experience of a committee charged with locating possible sites for a facility for sexual predators under supervised release to the community. In addition, this …
A Unique Mri Presentation Of Fungal Infection In The Brain, Muhammad Bilal Salman Khan, Saad Shafqat, Ather Enam
A Unique Mri Presentation Of Fungal Infection In The Brain, Muhammad Bilal Salman Khan, Saad Shafqat, Ather Enam
Section of Neurology
Fungal infections of CNS are common in certain geographic locations. MRI with or without contrast is a useful prediagnostic tool. However, the findings may sometimes be misleading. In this case report, the authors present unusual imaging findings in the MRI of fungal infection in an immunocompetent host, whereby hyper-intense signals were seen on T2-weighted images and patchy post-contrast enhancement was observed with surrounding edema. These findings were suggestive of a neoplastic lesion but it was identified as aspergillosis on subsequent histopathology. This unusual MRI finding of CNS highlights the need to consider fungal infection as a differential diagnosis of all …

The Effects Of Enhanced Discharge Education On Knowledge Retention In First Time Stroke/Tia Patients, Edward M. Stiner Jr.
The Effects Of Enhanced Discharge Education On Knowledge Retention In First Time Stroke/Tia Patients, Edward M. Stiner Jr.
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
he purpose of this study is to determine whether patients aged 40-65 years, who are admitted for stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA) for the first time and who receive enhanced stroke discharge education have higher levels of education retention than patients aged 40-65 years who are admitted for stroke/TIA for the first time who receive standard stroke discharge education without the enhancement. Forty male and female participants were randomly placed into either a standard discharge education N=20 or enhanced discharge education group: N=20. The standard discharge education group received the usual stroke/TIA discharge education administered by the staff …
Fault Detection For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles With Non-Redundant Sensors, Brandon Jeffrey Cannon
Fault Detection For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles With Non-Redundant Sensors, Brandon Jeffrey Cannon
Theses and Dissertations
To operate, autonomous systems of necessity employ a variety of sensors to perceive their environment. Many small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are unable to carry redundant sensors due to size, weight, and power (SWaP) constraints. Faults in these sensors can cause undesired behavior, including system instability. Thus, detection of faults in these non-redundant sensors is of paramount importance. The problem of detecting sensor faults in non-redundant sensors on board autonomous aircraft is non-trivial. Factors that make development of a solution difficult include both an inability to perfectly characterize systems and sensors as well as the SWaP constraints inherent with small UAV. …
The Never-Ending Struggle: Us Press Coverage Of Contraception 2000–2013, Ana C. Garner, Edgar Mendez
The Never-Ending Struggle: Us Press Coverage Of Contraception 2000–2013, Ana C. Garner, Edgar Mendez
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
In 1873, the Comstock Act labeled contraceptive information and materials obscene and banned their distribution. The issue divided the United States then, and it divides the nation today. This essay examines 2000–2013 press coverage of contraception in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, two newspapers that have covered contraception since 1873. Press coverage reveals that contemporary efforts to regulate women’s bodies are cloaked in discussions about the Affordable Care Act, religious freedom, morality, and employer rights. Accepting the ideology that contraception is no longer a reproductive rights issue allowed the press to exclude women from …

It is known that there is a correlation between a cell membrane potential and the proliferation of the cell. The high proliferation capacity of liver cells can also be attributed to its specific cell membrane potential as liver cell is recognized as one of the most depolarized of all differentiated cells. We hypothesized that this phenomenon can be emphasized by growing liver cells in conducting scaffolds that can increase the electrical communication among the cells. In this article, using tissue engineering techniques, we grew hepatocyte cells in scaffolds with various compositions. It was found that the scaffolds containing conducting polymer …

Background: Medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) are physical symptoms for which no adequate medical explanation can be found after proper examination. The presence of MUPS is the key feature of conditions known as 'somatoform disorders'. Various psychological and physical therapies have been developed to treat somatoform disorders and MUPS. Although there are several reviews on non‐pharmacological interventions for somatoform disorders and MUPS, a complete overview of the whole spectrum is missing. Objectives: To assess the effects of non‐pharmacological interventions for somatoform disorders (specifically somatisation disorder, undifferentiated somatoform disorder, somatoform disorders unspecified, somatoform autonomic dysfunction, pain disorder, and alternative somatoform diagnoses …
Policy Design And Non-Design: Towards A Spectrum Of Policy Formulation Types, Michael Howlett, Ishani Mukherjee
Policy Design And Non-Design: Towards A Spectrum Of Policy Formulation Types, Michael Howlett, Ishani Mukherjee
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Public policies are the result of efforts made by governments to alter aspects of behaviour—both that of their ownagents and of society at large—in order to carry out some end or purpose. They are comprised of arrangements of policygoals and policy means matched through some decision-making process. These policy-making efforts can be more,or less, systematic in attempting to match ends and means in a logical fashion or can result from much less systematicprocesses. “Policy design” implies a knowledge-based process in which the choice of means or mechanisms throughwhich policy goals are given effect follows a logical process of inference from …

Auditor Switching For Opinion Shopping, And Subsequnt Audit Quality And Audit Fee: Evidence From Post-Sox Period, Jong-Hag Choi, Heesun Chung, Catherine Heyjung Sonu, Yoonseok Zang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Theory suggests that firms engage in opinion shopping to obtain better audit opinions. However, there is scarce evidence on the economic consequences of the opinion shopping behaviors. In this paper, we examine the effect of auditor switches for opinion shopping on audit quality and audit fees. Using 30,333 firm-year observations over the 2004-2012 period in the U.S., we first document evidence that firms switch their auditors in search for better audit opinions. Next, we find that the audit quality of clients that switch auditors for opinion shopping is significantly lower than that of clients that did not switch auditors or …
Cultural Differences In Prioritizing Applicant Attributes When Assessing Employment Suitability, Serena Wee, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li
Cultural Differences In Prioritizing Applicant Attributes When Assessing Employment Suitability, Serena Wee, Peter K. Jonason, Norman P. Li
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
We examined how culture influences perceptions of applicant attributes when assessing employment suitability. In two studies (N = 408), we compared members from a collectivistic society (Singapore) to two samples from individualistic societies (the United States and Australia) on their perceptions of applicant attributes across job contexts. For each job, participants either chose between candidates with different attribute profiles or created ideal candidates by allocating a fixed amount of percentile points across different attributes. More often than Australians, Singaporeans chose the candidate with higher levels of the trait (e.g., openness to experience) uniquely associated with the job (e.g., graphic designer). …

Ai Weiwei is famous for crossing boundaries, especially the boundary between art and politics. To appreciate the often contradictory nature ofAis work, this essay employs multiple narratives: " Ai the Heroic Warrior" who cńticizes the Chinese government; " Ai the Court Jester " who plays with the Chinese state and Western media; and "Ai the Middleman " who acts as a broker between China and the West, between young and old people, and between civil society and the state in the PRC. The essay concludes that afourth narrative can bńng together these three stones in a multicoded understanding ofAis work: …
Movement Without Mobility: Adolescent Status Hierarchies And The Contextual Limits Of Cumulative Advantage, Jeffrey A. Smith, Robert Faris
Movement Without Mobility: Adolescent Status Hierarchies And The Contextual Limits Of Cumulative Advantage, Jeffrey A. Smith, Robert Faris
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This paper develops a theory of interpersonal status hierarchies that builds on and challenges traditional models of cumulative advantage. Cumulative advantage models predict stability in interpersonal status hierarchies, where status is defined by asymmetries in social relationships. According to strict cumulative advantage, initial status differences are exaggerated over time, making upward or downward mobility unlikely. We argue that interpersonal status hierarchies are instead quite fluid, with individuals regularly moving up or down the hierarchy. Individual status gains do not, however, disrupt the status order as the upwardly mobile are often pulled back to their original positions. This drag of the …
Library Planning And Budgeting: A Few Underappreciated Principles, Robert P. Holley
Library Planning And Budgeting: A Few Underappreciated Principles, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
In this issue, Robert P. Holley, Professor of Library and Information Science at Wayne State University, looks at several important points about library planning and budgeting from his twenty five years’ experience as a library administrator. He chose these topics because they most often come as a surprise to students in his library management classes as well as his library colleagues. Understanding these few underappreciated and less than obvious management principles can help library managers grasp how libraries are different from for-profit organizations and how they can avoid some planning and budgeting traps.

The Supreme Court Of Canada: Policy-Maker Of The Year, Benjamin Perrin
All Faculty Publications
Each year, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute for Public Policy recognizes a “Policy-Maker of the Year”. Past recipients have included former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and Foreign Minister John Baird, who have had a tremendous impact on our country’s economic stability and international stature, respectively. One could argue that, while people in such positions are undoubtedly influential, there is another entity that is rarely acknowledged for its influence on policy, but in the last year has changed Canadian public policy in wide-reaching and long-lasting ways – the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC). This paper examines the Court’s 10 most significant …

Choledochal Cyst--A Different Disease In Newborns And Infants, Zafar Nazir, Munira Abdul Aziz
Department of Surgery Docs
Abstract
We report experience of managing Choledochal Cyst (CC) in different paediatric ages. Eleven neonates and infants (aged 0-8 months) and 24 paediatric cases (aged 2.5 - 18 years) were managed over 24 years (1988 to 2012). Neonates and infants presented with jaundice, acholic stools and abdominal mass whereas most of the paediatric cases presented with intermittent non-specific abdominal pain. Morphology of CC was mostly cystic in neonates whereas it was fusiform in majority (62%) of paediatric cases. Biliary amylase was high and correlated with the presence of abnormal pancreaticobiliary junction (PBJ) in 20 /24 paediatric patients. Obstruction at the …

Water Resources And The Historic Wells Of Barbuda: Tradition, Heritage And Hope For A Sustainable Future, Rebecca Boger, Sophia Perdikaris, Amy E. Potter, John Mussington
Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications
The island of Barbuda has a relatively unique history, land tenure and geography. Unlike its Caribbean counterparts, the island is not suited to large-scale agriculture due to its arid climate and relatively thin soils. Instead, the enslaved and eventually free people of Barbuda developed a complex herding ecology centered on common land ownership. As a result, carefully designed historic wells are strategically located around the island. With the challenges brought about by climate change, an interdisciplinary, international team led by the Barbuda Research Complex is investigating the state of existing water and food resources and examining how the availability and …

Anthropology Of, For, And With Design: A Philippine Perspective, Ds Maranan, P Cajilig
School of Art, Design and Architecture
The intersection of the fields of design and anthropology emerges as fertile ground for study as societies increasingly acknowledge the tremendous impact the objects we create for ourselves have on our lives. As anthropologists and ethnographers involved in running our own design research company in the Philippines, negotiating the alignments and contradictions between the two fields of knowledge is an essential component of our everyday research practice. This paper outlines different models of the relationships between design and anthropology as systems of knowledge and practice. We first extend a theoretical framework that distinguishes between anthropology of, anthropology for, and anthropology …

Solid waste holds the greatest potential as biomass source in Libya. The rapid expansion of industry has led to increased urbanization and growing population. These factors have dramatically increased the amount of MSW (municipal solid waste) generated in Libya. However, issues related to environmentally sound MSW management - including waste decrease and clearance - have not been addressed sufficiently. This study presents an overview on solid waste that can be used as a source of bioenergy in Libya including MSW, ISW (industrial solid waste), and HSW (health care wastes) as biomass sources. The management of solid waste and valorization is …

Intellectual Property Treaties And Development, Dalindyebo Shabalala, Anselm Kamperman Sanders
School of Law Faculty Publications
This work responds to the increasing need in many countries to better understand linkages between intellectual property, trade rules, and economic and social development, and to find new ways of implementing intellectual property rules and optimizing their effects. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the latest legal, economic, political and social research and advanced current thinking on the relationship between intellectual property and trade and development.
This chapter traces the link between intellectual property protection, innovation, and development trough the multilateral WTO system and bilateral trade and investment treaties. In a post-TRIPS globalized world, knowledge-intensive economies encounter increasing difficulties in …

Prevalence Of Vascular Thrombosis And Obstetric Complications In Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients With Antiphospholipid Antibody, Pailin Mahaparn, Ponlapat Rojnuckarin
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background : The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) recommends primary prophylaxis with aspirin and hydroxychloroquine in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with antiphospholipid antibodies without prior thrombosis. However, Asian populations may have lower incidence of thrombosis and the role of primary prophylaxis is unclear. Therefore, we examined the prevalence of thrombosis in Thai antiphospholipid-positive SLE patients. Methods : The medical records of SLE patients (N = 715) admitted to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital from 2002 - 2012 were studied. Two hundred and eighteen patients were investigated for antiphospholipid antibodies, and 82 of them (37.6%) were positive. These 82 patients were …

We reported here a case of pulmonary artery sarcoma. The patient presented with progressive dyspnea on exertion for 2 months. Chest radiography showed a large lobulated mass in the right lower lung field. Chest CT scan showed 2 pulmonary masses in the rightmiddle lobe and the right-lower lobe, with extensive filling defects in the right and left pulmonary arteries. A core needle biopsy of the larger mass showed an undetermined type of sarcoma. Pulmonary arteries were considered the primary origin of the sarcoma. Pulmonary endarterectomy with tumor debulking was performed to relieve the patient's symptoms in a combination with adjuvant …
