Er-Associated Degradation And Cadmium Dependent Rescue Of Pca1, Nathan Smith
Er-Associated Degradation And Cadmium Dependent Rescue Of Pca1, Nathan Smith
Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Protein synthesis and proper folding is an essential process for all organisms. In eukaryotes proteins of the secretory pathway are synthesized and inserted into the lumen or membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum. Eukaryotic cells maintain a mechanism for removal of proteins unable to fold properly. This process is known as ER-associated degradation (ERAD). A poorly functioning ERAD can lead to a build-up of misfolded proteins which has been implicated in several degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson’s. Thus, the study of how proteins are recognized, extracted from the ER, and degraded is essential for determining methods …
Hydrolytically Stable Analogues Of Sugar Phosphates And A Miniaturized In Situ Enzymatic Screen, Xiang Fei
Hydrolytically Stable Analogues Of Sugar Phosphates And A Miniaturized In Situ Enzymatic Screen, Xiang Fei
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The glmS riboswitch undergoes self-cleavage upon binding its metabolic product GlcN6P, thereby providing a negative feedback mechanism limiting translation of the glmS protein when GlcN6P is abundant. As a first step toward the development of novel antimicrobials, we have synthesized a series of GlcN6P analogues bearing phosphatase-inert surrogates in place of the natural phosphate ester functionality. The self-cleavage assay identified two such compounds that display significant riboswitch actuator activity; namely those bearing a 6-phosphonomethyl group or a 6-O-malonyl ether. These two analogues exhibit a 22-fold and a 27-fold higher catalytic efficiency, respectively, than does glucosamine. Docking experiments were …

Polymorphisms Of Abcc2, Abcc4, Abcc10 And Slc22a6 In Thai Hiv - Infected Patients, Siwaporn Mitruk, Anchalee Avihingsanon, Baralee Punyawudho

Background : Drug transporters including ABCC2, ABCC4, ABCC10 and SLC22A6 play important roles in regulating physiologic solute and fluid balance in the cell. They also involve in drug delivery into the organs. Therefore, genetic variations of these transporters may influence the pharmacokinetics of drugs and major pharmacological active metabolites. The information of transporter gene polymorphisms can be useful as guidance for the study of the association between genetic variations and pharmacokinetics of drugs. Objective : To determine the allele frequency of ABCC2, ABCC4, ABCC10 and SLC22A6 in Thai HIV - infected patients. Research design : Cross-sectional study. Setting : The …

Uremic Tumoral Calcinosis, Report Of A Rare Case At King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Chanat Kumtornrut, Numphung Numkarunarunrote, Pawinee Rerknimitr
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Uremic tumoral calcinosis is primarily found in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Its clinical and radiologic presentations are highly characteristic. We herein report a case of a 33-year-old Thai male with ESRD and tertiary hyperparathyroidism. He presented with multiple cystic nodules on the right shoulder, hands, and feet without causing joint destruction for 2 years. The plain radiographs of the right shoulder and hands showed the pathognomonic "sedimentation sign". The patient underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy, as a result, the masses significantly decreased in size 3 months later. This case should increase the awareness among dermatologists …

Objective : To evaluate the role of thrombolytic therapy in patients with submassive PE. Design : Systematic review. Setting : Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. Methods : We performed a literature search using Pubmed, Scopus, scientific abstracts from meetings, and bibliographies of retrieved articles. Only randomized control trials were included in this systematic review. Result : Three randomized control trials were identified. All these studies excluded patients with high risk of bleeding. The evidence from randomized control trials identified in this systematic review …

What Is Criminal Restitution?, Cortney E. Lollar
What Is Criminal Restitution?, Cortney E. Lollar
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
A new form of restitution has become a core aspect of criminal punishment. Courts now order defendants to compensate victims for an increasingly broad category of losses, including emotional and psychological losses and losses for which the defendant was not found guilty. Criminal restitution therefore moves far beyond its traditional purpose of disgorging a defendant's ill-gotten gains. Instead, restitution has become a mechanism of imposing additional punishment. Courts, however, have failed to recognize the punitive nature of restitution and thus enter restitution orders without regard to the constitutional protections that normally attach to criminal proceedings. This Article deploys a novel …
