A Quantitative Study Of Educational Poverty, School Location, And Student Achievement Measured By The Program For International Student Assessment (Pisa), Brett Barger

Dissertations

The performance of the United States’ students on international tests remains an ongoing source of concern, division, and anxiety for government, educational, and business leaders, teachers (and their unions), as well as the general public. These selfsame test results have been used as evidence to support diametrically opposed political and educational strategy and policy for decades. All too often the performance of students is discussed with a single test score number that is used to represent the entirety of the education system’s students without accounting for geographical, demographic, or socioeconomic differences among the student test takers. The contributing factors of …

Preparation Of Pre-Service Primary Science Teachers To Develop Scientific Literacy: A Case Of A Primary Teacher Training College In Taita Taveta County, Kenya, Angela Ndunge Kamanga Nov 2014

Preparation Of Pre-Service Primary Science Teachers To Develop Scientific Literacy: A Case Of A Primary Teacher Training College In Taita Taveta County, Kenya, Angela Ndunge Kamanga

Master of Education

Scientific Literacy (SL) is a significant learning outcome among Pre-service Primary Science Teachers (PPSTs) in the 21st century. Owing to the crucial role of primary science tutors their knowledge and skills are indispensable in preparing PPSTs to develop SL. On the contrary, tutors currently exercise their practices without the prerequisite skills needed to develop the desired skills in the PPSTs. Consequently, the need for the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) to utilize learner centered approaches, and scientific inquiry skills to unlock their potential to prepare PPSTs to develop SL hence teach primary school learners to develop the same. This study sought …

Common Hazards In Karst Terrain, Benjamin J. Currens, Alan Fryar, Carmen T. Agouridis Nov 2014

Common Hazards In Karst Terrain, Benjamin J. Currens, Alan Fryar, Carmen T. Agouridis

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Karst refers to terrain largely drained by subsurface conduits and caves. Karst landscapes are characterized by surface features such as springs, sinkholes, shallow depressions, and rolling hills (Figure 1). Karst regions are also known for their subsurface or below-ground features such as conduits and caves (Figure 2). What makes a karst region unique is the way runoff drains from the land. In karst regions, some of the runoff flows into surface features such as sinkholes where it then travels underground. Some of this infiltrated water re-emerges at springs (Figure 1a), and some continues moving underground.

Irrigation Tips To Conserve Water And Grow A Healthy Lawn, Gregg Munshaw, Brad Lee Nov 2014

Irrigation Tips To Conserve Water And Grow A Healthy Lawn, Gregg Munshaw, Brad Lee

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Turfgrasses are composed of thousands of cells, all containing water, in which metabolic processes such as photosynthesis and respiration take place. Water makes up 80 to 90 percent of the total plant mass. If this level drops below 60 percent, these processes may slow and wilting will occur. Water is critically important for:

  • Maintaining turgidity, which keeps plants standing upright
  • Transporting nutrients and sugars through the plant
  • Chemical reactions
  • Transpirational cooling when water moves out of the leaves and evaporates

Restoration Of Bison (Bison Bison) To Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, A Feasibility Study, Daniel S. Licht

United States National Park Service: Publications

Executive Summary

Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is a 3,057-acre park located in western Nebraska. The unit is comprised of northern mixed-grass prairie vegetation, typical of the Northern Great Plains. Weather, fire, and grazing are generally considered to be the ecological drivers of prairie ecosystems and critical for prairie health. However, grazing has essentially been absent since the 1960s. In 2014, a Department of the Interior report explicitly listed the park as a high priority for bison restoration. This report evaluates the feasibility, management options, benefits, and challenges of restoring bison to Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

A potential bison …

Development And Evaluation Of A Model For Secondary Evolution Educators’ Professional Development Needs, William L. Romine, Ellen Barnett, Patricia J. Friedrichsen, Aaron J. Sickel

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Professional development (PD) efforts have improved acceptance and pedagogical practice related to the theory of evolution in high school biology teachers. However, these teachers express need for more PD related to evolution. It therefore becomes necessary to understand teachers’ PD needs prior to structuring PD efforts.

Methods

We formulated and validated a model to explain secondary teachers’ PD needs using data from a survey of 276 secondary biology teachers who reported teaching evolution.

Results

In addition to reliable subscales, we found that obstacles to teaching evolution, school and community support for evolution instruction, confidence in evolution instruction, and prior …

OBJECTIVE:

Chronic neurological deficits are a significant complication of preterm birth. Magnesium supplementation has been suggested to have neuroprotective function in the developing brain. Our objective was to determine whether higher neonatal serum magnesium levels were associated with better long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes in very-low birth weight infants.

STUDY DESIGN:

A retrospective cohort of 75 preterm infants (<1500 g, gestational age <27 weeks) had follow-up for the outcomes of abnormal motor exam and for epilepsy. Average total serum magnesium level in the neonate during the period of prematurity was the main independent variable assessed, tested using a Wilcoxon rank-sum test.

RESULTS:

Higher average serum magnesium level was associated with a statistically significant decreased risk for abnormal motor exam (p = 0.037). A lower risk for epilepsy in the group with higher magnesium level did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.06).

CONCLUSION:

This …

Equitable Anti-Junction Act, The, Erin Morrow Hawley Nov 2014

Equitable Anti-Junction Act, The, Erin Morrow Hawley

Faculty Publications

The (AIA or the Act) has never been more important. Originally enacted to expedite the collection of revenue-raising taxes, courts and scholars have for years assumed that the statute imposes a jurisdictional bar on any pre-enforcement challenge to a tax. On this interpretation, taxpayers subject to an invalid tax have two choices only: comply or pay the tax and pursue a refund. Read this way, the Act is a marked departure from the general rule that pre-enforcement challenges are permissible so long as justiciability requirements are met. And it imposes a marked burden on aggrieved taxpayers that grows all the …

East Asian Low Marriage And Birth Rates: The Role Of Social Status Affordance In Marriage And Childbearing Behavior, Jose C. Yong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Although declines in marriage and birth rates are generally associated with industrialization and economic advancement, countries with a dominantly East Asian cultural population exhibit the lowest marriage and birth rates in the developed world. This study aims to identify and verify a new latent construct, social status affordance, as an underlying account for the differences in long-term mating outcomes (i.e., marriage and childbearing) between developed East Asian countries and other developed countries. Drawing on an understanding of the specific East Asian cultural values of harmony and deference and, subsequently, the importance of social status conferred by educational and occupational prestige …

Adverse remodeling following myocardial infarction (MI) leading to heart failure is driven by an imbalanced resolution of inflammation. The macrophage cell is an important control of post-MI inflammation, as macrophage subtypes secrete mediators to either promote inflammation and extend injury (M1 phenotype) or suppress inflammation and promote scar formation (M2 phenotype). We have previously shown that the absence of caveolin-1 (Cav1), a membrane scaffolding protein, is associated with adverse cardiac remodeling in mice, but the mechanisms responsible remain to be elucidated. We explore here the role of Cav1 in the activation of macrophages using wild type C57BL6/J (WT) and Cav1tm1Mls/J …

Neural Stem Cells As A Model To Study Huntington’S Disease, Rawan Bakhsh Nov 2014

Neural Stem Cells As A Model To Study Huntington’S Disease, Rawan Bakhsh

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a heritable neurodegenerative disorder that affects muscle coordination and diminishes cognitive abilities, by affecting the medium spiny neurons in the brain. In HD patients, neurons are damaged and destroyed because of the toxicity of the mutant Huntington protein (mHtt). The mechanism of how mHtt protein affects the neurons is unknown. In this study we explored the effects of mHtt expression by looking at changes in huntingtin localization, changes in the expression and co-localization of related proteins and differences in cell morphology. We examine how this expression affects the cytoskeletal structures using neural stem cells Q7 (wild …

Genetic Dominance & Cellular Processes, Robert D. Seager Nov 2014

Genetic Dominance & Cellular Processes, Robert D. Seager

Faculty Work

In learning genetics, many students misunderstand and misinterpret what “dominance” means. Understanding is easier if students realize that dominance is not a mechanism, but rather a consequence of underlying cellular processes. For example, metabolic pathways are often little affected by changes in enzyme concentration. This means that enzyme-producing alleles usually show complete dominance. For genes producing nonenzymatic proteins such as collagen or hemoglobin, the amount of product matters, and dominance relationships are more complicated. Furthermore, with hemoglobin, dominance can change depending on what aspect of the phenotype is being studied and on the environmental conditions. X-linked genes are a special …
