Exploring Peer Learning In The Context Of Dyadic Interactions In Kindergarten Aged Children, Elisabeth A. Mlawski
Exploring Peer Learning In The Context Of Dyadic Interactions In Kindergarten Aged Children, Elisabeth A. Mlawski
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Kindergarten aged children are now expected to interact with peers in their classrooms for the purpose of gaining new knowledge. Since children spend a great deal of time in the company of other children, it is assumed that the children know how to learn from each other. Previously studied have been mechanisms used by adults during peer learning, but not the mechanisms used by children during unscripted peer learning interactions. Knowing the specific mechanisms used during these interactions will help to identify foundational skills necessary for successful peer learning. This study contributes to the understanding of the specific verbal and …

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are water-soluble components of petroleum. The characterization and quantification of NAs by analytical methods have proved quite challenging, whilst the toxic effects of these water-soluble compounds on a variety of organisms adversely affecting reproduction and steroid production is becoming apparent. In this study, we report a fluorescence-based competitive binding method for rapid sensing of the presence of NAs using cellulosic peptide array strips as sensors. The peptide array was designed from sequences derived from the estrogen receptor (ER). Several of these peptides were able to detect the presence of NAs at low micromolar (∼5 mg L−1 …

Cytokines are pleiotropic and redundant signaling molecules that govern the inflammatory response and immunity, a critical ecological parameter for organism success and population growth. Produced at the site of injury or pathogen intrusion by a variety of cell types, cytokines mediate cell-signaling in either an autocrine or paracrine manner. The type and magnitude of the cytokine milieu produced subsequently dictates the strength and form of immune response. As the most diverse vertebrate group, with a high sensitivity to contaminants, fish represent an important foci for the evaluation of immune system evolution, function, and alteration upon toxicant exposure. While many cytokines …

Impact Of Implementing Performance-Based Financing On Childhood Malnutrition In Rwanda, Agnes Binagwaho, Jeanine Condo, Claire Wagner, Fidele Ngabo, Corine Karema, Steve Kanters, Jamie I. Forrest, Jean De Dieu Bizimana
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Malnutrition remains a serious concern in Rwanda, particularly among children under-5 years. Performance-based financing (PBF), an innovative health systems financing strategy, has been implemented at the national level since 2008. This study aimed to assess the impact of PBF and other factors associated with the prevalence of three classifications of malnutrition (stunting, wasting and underweight) in children under-5 years in Rwanda. Methods: The study is a cross-sectional study comprising of 713 children under five years old from 557 households, whose anthropometric measurements (height, weight and age) had been obtained as part of the 2008 Rwanda General Health and HIV …

A Checklist Of Birds Of Prey Of Rawalpindi, Islamabad And Adjacent Areas, Nadia Yousaf, Madeeha Manzoor
Journal of Bioresource Management
Wildlife is declining worldwide due to loss of habitat, pollution, introduction of exotic species, climatic changes etc. Birds of prey are believed to be rapidly declining in Pakistan though no reliable recent data is available and the available literature suggests its previous wide distribution throughout Pakistan. This current study was carried out in the Rawalpindi, Islamabad and some adjacent areas (latitude N 33o27.34-33o48.05 longitude E 72o59.34-73o27.30) to make a checklist of previously and newly existing prey birds as well as to study their general behaviors and biology. Targeted areas were studied at …

Toxic Metal Effect On Filamentous Fungi Isolated From The Contaminated Soil Of Multan And Gujranwala, Anam Rasool, Shazia Irum
Journal of Bioresource Management
Considering the importance of filamentous fungi for bioremediation of wastewater and contaminated soils, this study was planned to investigate the metal tolerance potential of indigenous filamentous fungi. Certain metals are important to biological actions. However all metals, whether essential or inessential will show toxicity at certain levels. During 2012 total 17 fungi were isolated and preserved from contaminated peri-urban agricultural areas of Multan and Gujranwala for further detail investigation of heavy metal tolerance. Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus isolated from both soil and water samples while Aspergillus terreus and Penicillium sp were only isolated from soil samples …
Anti-Cancer Mechanisms Of The Natural Plant Derived Compound, Withaferin A In Her-2/Neu Breast Cancer, Annalise Barnette
Anti-Cancer Mechanisms Of The Natural Plant Derived Compound, Withaferin A In Her-2/Neu Breast Cancer, Annalise Barnette
Open Access Dissertations
Overexpression of the HER-2/neu oncoprotein occurs in approximately 30% of breast cancer cases and is associated with a more aggressive tumor phenotype and poor prognosis for patients. Current treatment strategies are effective in a subset of patients however a significant number of patients relapse due to acquired mechanisms of resistance to current therapy. Alternative approaches, that utilize multiple modes of action, are therefore necessary to combat this severe form of breast cancer. Natural compounds are notorious for their multiple mechanisms of action, which make them ideal therapeutics for complex diseases such as cancer. Withaferin A (WA) is a purified product …

Watching anyone struggle with mental health disorders should never be funny- and yet, in some instances, that’s exactly how it is viewed. Recently, celebrity Amanda Bynes was involuntarily committed to psychiatric hold for the second time in a year. This was following a series of very public tweets which clearly show instability in her mental health. One tweet in particular regarding a microchip she believes was implanted in her brain is markedly delusional. The media and public, however, have been sensationalizing and demoralizing her condition by treating it as just another piece of shocking celebrity news. Headlines like “Amanda Bynes’ …

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Personal Mastery Among Sexual Minority African-American Female Sex Workers, Mance E. Buttram, Hilary L. Surratt, Steven P. Kurtz
CAHSS Faculty Articles
Research among sexual minorities has traditionally examined problems such as substance use, HIV risk, mental health problems, and victimization. Among sexual minority street-based female sex workers, these vulnerabilities can be magnified. Grounded in theories of resilience, this study examines risk and protective factors associated with a high level of personal mastery among a vulnerable population of women. Data are drawn from baseline interviews from street-based African American female sex workers enrolled in a randomized intervention trial in Miami, Florida. We compare sexual minority (N=197) and heterosexual (N=365) women on measures of risk and protective factors; among sexual minority women we …

Assessing The Monitoring And Management Of Overweight And Obesity In Children Hospitalized For Asthma, Anne E. Borgmeyer
Assessing The Monitoring And Management Of Overweight And Obesity In Children Hospitalized For Asthma, Anne E. Borgmeyer
Dissertations
Asthma and overweight are two of the most common chronic health problems in children. Data support a relationship between the two health issues. Although asthma is one of the top reasons for hospital admission for children, little is known about the prevalence of overweight and obesity or clinical practice related to weight in children hospitalized for asthma. The purpose of this project was to assess weight characteristics of children admitted with asthma, as well as the current practices of monitoring and management of overweight and obesity in children hospitalized with asthma. A retrospective review of medical records was conducted. The …
