Resolving The Conflict Between Mining And Sustainability, David A.C. Manning Jan 2014

Resolving The Conflict Between Mining And Sustainability, David A.C. Manning

Applied Environmental Research

Mining is essential for human health and prosperity, and is increasing as the global populationgrows. The need for minerals appears to conflict with what is commonly understood as 'sustainability',as geological resources are non-renewable on a human timescale. However, the Brundtland definition of sustainability includes the concept of 'needs', implying that there has to be a balanced approach thatconsiders poverty alleviation. It identifies the three pillars of sustainability: economic, social and environmental. In the UK, mining has a legacy extending back over 6000 years. The approach taken to sustainability will be illustrated by 3 examples from northern England. In the 18thand 19thcenturies, …

Incremental Concentration Of Black Carbon Aerosol From Road Traffic In Inner Bangkok, Panwadee Suwattiga Jan 2014

Incremental Concentration Of Black Carbon Aerosol From Road Traffic In Inner Bangkok, Panwadee Suwattiga

Applied Environmental Research

Commonly referred to as soot, black carbon (BC) is a primary aerosol emitted from incomplete combustion of organic materials such as fossil fuels, biofuels and biomass. BC aerosolis a dominant anthropogenic solar radiation absorber, absorbing approximately 1 million times more radiation per unit of mass than CO2. Recent research has found that BC is the second largest anthropogenic contributor to global warming. BC aerosol is not only a short-lived climate forcer (SLCF) but also an air pollutant that adversely affects human health. Emission sources of BC aerosol are mainly residential, industrial, transportation related and/or and open burning sources. In a …

Beneath The Glass Ceiling : What Causes Some Qualified Female Educators To Remain In The Classroom While Others Obtain Leadership Roles?, Allison J. Jordan Jan 2014

Beneath The Glass Ceiling : What Causes Some Qualified Female Educators To Remain In The Classroom While Others Obtain Leadership Roles?, Allison J. Jordan

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

There is a dispoportionate number of female administrators in relation to the number of female-helmed classrooms in the United States. Jordan tackles the issue of gender in educational leadership. While the removal of legal and social barriers to administrative leadership in the twentieth century may have seemed to point the way toward a female-dominated leadership structure, she finds that female educational leaders are underrepresented at all levels. The study focused on Central Virginia. Jordan tried to uncover the common themes among female educators, including what differences existed between qualified classroom teachers and women who held positions of educational leadership.

Broken At Both Ends: The Need To Reconnect Energy And Environment, Steven Ferrey Jan 2014

Broken At Both Ends: The Need To Reconnect Energy And Environment, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

In the post-industrial economy, key national environmental laws and energy regulations can impose contradictory demands, pursuant to which it is impossible to comply with both. Do regulated companies follow orders to generate essential energy supply or adhere to environmental emissions limits or orders not to generate? The United States Congress and federal agencies have each ignored creating a critical joinder of national policy, and there is no judicial precedent to resolve this conflict. The conflict between energy and environmental regulation creates a new constitutional challenge of essential first impression.

The Role Of Sabbath-Keeping, Christian Internalization, Need Satisfaction, And Parental Environment In Well-Being, Paola S. Caceres Jan 2014

The Role Of Sabbath-Keeping, Christian Internalization, Need Satisfaction, And Parental Environment In Well-Being, Paola S. Caceres

Honors Theses

Identifying which specific religious practices promote religious internalization is crucial in understanding the relationship between practice and well-being. The current study employs surveys along with an episodic memory recall task to examine whether the relationship between Sabbath-keeping internalization and well-being is mediated by Christian religious internalization, parental environment, and basic need satisfaction as outlined in Self-Determination Theory. Our mediation analysis results demonstrate a large mediation effect size for daily basic needs satisfaction (autonomy, competence, and autonomy) on the relationship between internalization of Sabbath-keeping and well-being. Small to medium effect sizes were found for a general measure of Christian internalization and …

Connection And Isolation, Lynda Lee Jan 2014

Connection And Isolation, Lynda Lee

Honors Theses

As one of the most recurrent subjects of visual art, the human form as been an important means of communicating human experiences and expressing the philosophical and scientific thoughts of a society. During the early 20th century, artists in Europe began distorting and abstracting the human figure in ways that were unprecedented and often times visually unsettling to emphasize its withdrawn and isolated condition while also suggesting a sense of fragility and vulnerability. Although there are various forms of isolation that can result from a number of different causes, my project explores the concept of social isolation brought about by …

The Inclusion Of Pregnant Women In Clinical Research, Barbara A. Noah Jan 2014

The Inclusion Of Pregnant Women In Clinical Research, Barbara A. Noah

Faculty Scholarship

In the past three decades, there has been unprecedented growth in medical research utilizing human subjects, with much promise for new treatments that extend life, improve quality of life, and prevent disease and disability. Safe prescribing of drug therapies requires that researchers design clinical trials to test products for the benefit of all persons who are likely to utilize them, not just a limited population. For this reason, it is essential that clinical trials include women, pregnant women, children, and racial minorities, as appropriate, because these populations sometimes exhibit different patterns of response or adverse reactions.

Despite some significant progress …

Variation in the sequence of T cell epitopes between dengue virus (DENV) serotypes is believed to alter memory T cell responses during second heterologous infections. We identified a highly conserved, novel, HLA-B57-restricted epitope on the DENV NS1 protein. We predicted higher frequencies of B57-NS126-34-specific CD8+ T cells in PBMC from individuals undergoing secondary rather than primary DENV infection. However, high tetramer-positive T cell frequencies during acute infection were seen in only 1 of 9 subjects with secondary infection. B57-NS126-34-specific and other DENV epitope-specific CD8+ T cells, as well as total CD8+ T cells, expressed an activated phenotype (CD69+ and/or CD38+) …

Terpene Chemistry Of Eastern Hemlocks Resistant To Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, E. Alexa Mckenzie, Joseph S. Elkinton, Richard A. Casagrande, Evan L. Preisser, Mark Mayer

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Recent studies have identified a small number of individual eastern hemlock trees that demonstrate relative resistance to the introduced sap-feeding insect, the hemlock woolly adelgid. Using gas chromatography, we compared concentrations of twenty-two terpenoids in susceptible and relatively resistant trees, both in the forest and in propagated cuttings in a common-garden setting. Terpenoid concentrations were higher in twig tissue of resistant versus susceptible trees, across six sampling dates and at both sites. These changes may be particularly important because the hemlock woolly adelgid feeds on twig tissue. Because the common-garden cuttings were free of herbivores, the higher terpenoid concentrations are …

"We Are Pioneers": Polyamorists' Stigma Management Strategies, Jessica M. Young Jan 2014

"We Are Pioneers": Polyamorists' Stigma Management Strategies, Jessica M. Young

Research Papers

Despite a shift in our late-modern period to erode more traditional forms of relationships and a growth in polyamory’s popularity, non-monogamy remains highly stigmatized. Polyamory is a relationship style wherein participants have multiple romantic and/or sexual partners with whom they focus on building commitments, sharing intimacy, and establishing honesty (Sheff 2006). While scholarship on polyamory and the stigma of non-monogamies generally is growing, little is known about how polyamorists manage their stigmatized identities. Using Goffman’s (1963) theory of stigma management, I inductively analyze discussion board posts on a polyamorous community’s website and find that polyamorists manage their stigma differently in …
