Service-Learning As A Way Of Developing Pre-Service Teachers’ Knowledge, Perceptions, And Cultural Awareness Of Aboriginal Education, Glenda Cain
Theses
This research explored service-learning as a way of developing pre-service teachers’ pedagogical literacy skills and cultural perceptions with regard to Aboriginal education through involvement in an Aboriginal educational setting. The purpose was for pre-service teachers to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal education whilst developing their own literacy knowledge and instructional skills. Service-learning was the teaching method chosen as it involves experiential learning with structured opportunities for critical thinking and reflection.
A qualitative approach was favoured whereby investigations occurred in a naturalistic setting. As such, the direct experiences of pre-service teachers formed the basis of data gathering and analysis. Field …
Multiple Intelligences And Therapeutic Alliances: Counsellors' Experiences Of Incorporating A Multiple Intelligence Approach To Counselling, Mark Pearson
Theses
Counselling clients display many ways of reflecting and communicating within therapy. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences (MI), while applied widely in the field of education, has only recently been applied to the field of counselling, and has the potential to support flexible responses to client’s different styles. In this study, counsellor experiences with introducing a MI approach to counselling are investigated. A focus on the impact of MI on therapeutic alliances is highlighted as therapeutic connection has been shown to contribute significantly to positive therapy outcomes. Recent research highlights the positive impact from modifying treatment in response to individual client …

Examining The Effectiveness Of The Circle Of Security Parenting Dvd Program, Whitney Rostad
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Child maltreatment continues to occur at alarming rates, and while several interventions currently exist for use with parents to minimize the incidence of child maltreatment (Daro & McCurdy, 2007), many can be time consuming for service providers and consumers. One program, the Circle of Security (COS), lasts 20 weeks with weekly sessions lasting approximately 2 hours each (Marvin, Cooper, Hoffman, & Powell, 2002). To make the program more accessible, the program’s originators modified it into a DVD protocol comprising only 8- weeks (Cooper, Hoffman, & Powell, 2009). The current study evaluated the effectiveness of the COS DVD program in improving …

The metabolic rate of an organism is influenced by mass, temperature, and diet. Climate change is anticipated to increase ambient temperatures of aquatic systems and decrease the quality of food available to algivorous fish. We conducted a lab experiment and a field study to quantify the influence that temperature and diet have on standard and field metabolic rate of cichlids from Lake Tanganyika. The lab experiment demonstrated the effects of increased temperature and decreased food quality on the relative growth rate (RGR) and standard metabolic rate of an algivorous cichlid, Tropheus duboisi. We found that in all temperature treatments fish …

The significant presence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in numerous consumer products and various applications of today’s society raises major concerns with respect to their release into the environment. Because groundwater represents an important transport pathway from contamination sources to human and environmental receptors, it is critical to understand how natural organic matter (NOM), a main component of groundwater, interacts with colloidal AgNPs and influences their stability and mobility. Thus, this study uses Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to examine the possible molecular interactions between widely-used Creighton AgNPs (11 mg L-1) and NOM (0-160.0 mg L-1 of humic and fulvic …

Phospholipase D2 (PLD2) is a cell membrane lipase that catalyzes the break down of phosphatidyl choline (PC) to phosphatidic acid (PA) and choline. PA is one of the major lipid second messengers that modulate a wide variety of signaling pathways, which are crucial for various cellular functions. In addition to this, PLD2 via binding to a large number of proteins and thereby regulates them independent of its lipase activity. Whereas PLD2 is involved in plethora of cellular functions, high levels of protein and/or activity of PLD2 are reported in variety of disease conditions, such as cancer metastasis and chronic inflammation …

Inappropriate tweets may cause severe damages on the authors' reputation or privacy. However, many users do not realize until publishing them after a while. Once published, such tweets have lasting effects that may not be completely eliminated by simple deletion, because other users may have read them or third-party tweet analysis platforms have cached them. In this paper, we study the problem of identifying regret tweets for normal individual users, with the ultimate goal to reduce the occurrences of regret tweets. We develop a machine learning approach to extract a large collection of regret tweets from noisy deleted tweets. We …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Literature-Based Discovery (LBD) refers to the process of uncovering hidden connections that are implicit in scientific literature. Numerous hypotheses have been generated from scientific literature using the LBD paradigm, which influenced innovations in diagnosis, treatment, preventions and overall public health. However, much of the existing research on discovering hidden connections among concepts have used distributional statistics and graph-theoretic measures to capture implicit associations. Such metrics do not explicitly capture the semantics of hidden connections. Rather, they only allude to the existence of meaningful underlying associations. To gain in-depth insights into the meaning of hidden (and other) connections, complementary methods have …

Unigov is one of the most significant pieces of legislation in Indianapolis and Indiana history. In the often times hostile environment of Indiana politics it is nothing short of a miracle that the leaders in the Republican Party were able to get the Unigov bill approved and have it be as successful for the city as it has been. Unigov also created a modern day political machine for the Republican Party of Indianapolis. The new city of Indianapolis under the leadership of Republican Mayors Richard Lugar and William Hudnut has earned national name recognition on the convention circuit and for …

Beta-Blockers Act Through Clathrin-Dependent Internalization And Egfr Transactivation To Promote Erk Phosphorylation, Taiwo Ajumobi
Graduate Thesis Collection
For cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, angina pectoris, and left ventricle hypertrophy; long-term activation of beta-adrenergic receptors is strongly linked to the progression of these diseases. A class of antagonistic drugs that target betaadrenergic receptors are collectively called beta-blockers. These drugs are commonly used to reduce the inotropic and chronotropic effects of beta-adrenergic receptor activation. This past decade has revealed that beta-blockers and other ligands are capable of functional selectivity at receptors. Functional selectivity describes the ability of ligands acting at 0 protein-coupled receptors (OPCRs) to preferentially activate or inhibit different signal transduction pathways. The studies on beta-adrenergic …

The Relationship Of Religiosity To Psychopathy: The Predictive Ability Of Religious Orientation For Stress And Depression In College Undergraduates, Robert B. Arrowood, J. Brian Pope, Thomas Harlow
Modern Psychological Studies
Evidence supports that different levels of religiosity are related to mental health outcomes. This study examines the relationship between religiosity and measures of psychological maladjustment. The current study compared participants' scores on several measures of religiosity with scores on Locus of Control, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Obsessive-Compulsive tendencies. Multiple regressions analyses were conducted suggesting that Indiscriminate Proreligiousness, a measure of overall religiosity, was found to be negatively correlated with stress. Highly religious people were found to have more of an intrinsic religious orientation than either extrinsic or quest orientation.
Glyphosate Resistant Weeds - Beat Them Before They Beat You, Sally Peltzer
Glyphosate Resistant Weeds - Beat Them Before They Beat You, Sally Peltzer
Grain and other field crops published reports
Herbicide resistance develops if the weeds exist in the population and set fertile seed. Being vigilant, keeping weed populations low and stopping seed set is the best way to prevent glyphosate resistance development:
- know the herbicide use history of each paddock. If glyphosate has been the dominant knockdown and spray-topping product used, it's time to change
- conduct herbicide resistance testing to determine what herbicides are effective on key weeds
- aim for maximum control
- establish a more diverse rotation to increase the number of control tactics available
- use non-herbicide control tactics at every opportunity
- always monitor the success of each control …

Abnormal accumulation of the presynaptic protein alpha-synuclein (aSyn) is associated with both familial and sporadic forms of Parkinson's disease. ATP13A2 is a lysosomal protein involved in protein degradation, including aSyn. Mice with a loss of ATP13A2 function develop age-related sensorimotor impairments and, in the brain, enhanced lipofuscin and insoluble aSyn accumulation. To further examine the potential interaction between aSyn and ATP13A2, aSyn overexpressing mice (aSyn) were crossbred with Atp13a2-defeicient (13a2) mice. Wildtype (WT), 13a2, aSyn, and double mutant aSyn/13a2 mice were generated and tested behaviorally at 3 ages. Sensorimotor function and cognition were examined using a battery of behavioral tests. …

In animals proprioceptive Ia afferents enable the animal to sense the location, orientation and movement of its limbs in space. These Ia afferents make connections with many different types of neurons within the spinal cord such as; motor neurons, Ia Inhibitory interneurons, and other interneurons. Ia Afferents connect with IaINs that project to antagonist muscle MNs to ensure that contraction of the antagonist muscle group is inhibited. For example the quadriceps Ia afferents contact IaINs that contact PBST motor neurons to inhibit excitation and thus contraction. The way in which the connectivity of these Ia afferents is established is not …

Modernly, one will study the law of contracts as a homogeneous body of law. The conceptualization is helpful in creating an appearance of order, allowing for the development of analytical frameworks. The construct breaks down, however, on detailed inspection. This article provides an illustration by examining aspects of the law governing corporate finance—legal principles at the intersection of the law of contracts and corporation law.
This article examines the application of contract doctrine to corporate financing transactions to a number of ends. First, it illustrates substantial inconsistencies in the application of contract doctrine depending on the subject matter. Principles applied …
