Enhanced Multi-Channel Active Noise Control System And Real-Time Implementation For Infant Incubator, Zhou Lv Jan 2014

Enhanced Multi-Channel Active Noise Control System And Real-Time Implementation For Infant Incubator, Zhou Lv

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The active noise control (ANC) system is implemented in the infant incubator and confirmed to improve environment effectively for infants. However, the traditional ANC systems cannot be applied directly to incubators without modification due to complicated noise models in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It has multiple unexpected noise sources both inside and outside the incubators. The thesis proposed a system which combines the feed-forward and feedback ANC systems with multiple reference microphones, generate a larger zone of silence, offer deeper noise attenuation, and operate in complex noise environments, i.e. multiple unknown various noise sources. Moreover, the on-line secondary …

Misusing Freud: Psychoanalysis And The Rise Of Homosexual Conversion Therapy, Jonathan Barrett Jan 2014

Misusing Freud: Psychoanalysis And The Rise Of Homosexual Conversion Therapy, Jonathan Barrett

Psi Sigma Siren

Current ideas of conversion therapy often focus on extremist religious groups that wish to cleanse the world of what they view as an immoral abomination, homosexuality. However, conversion therapy started out as mostly scientific curiosity. Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic research on human sexuality helped set the standards on psychosexual study in the twentieth century. Unfortunately, his views on homosexuality became distorted in the 1950s when psychoanalysts and psychiatrists used his methods of therapy but ignored his conclusions on homosexuality and sexual nature itself. Such distortions led to the destruction of many lives within the homosexual community.

Reparative therapy on homosexuals exploded …

Understanding The Wife Of Proverbs 31, Amy Sieg Jan 2014

Understanding The Wife Of Proverbs 31, Amy Sieg

Animals' Capability To Bond And The Implications That Follow, Falyn Goldfarb Jan 2014

Animals' Capability To Bond And The Implications That Follow, Falyn Goldfarb

Honors College Theses

This paper explores the ways in which humans have historically viewed animals, with a focus on Descartes theory automata. Further concepts of the problem of different minds, inherent value, empathy, love, friendship, grief, isolation, anthropomorphism, and biochemistry (focusing on oxytocin, cortisol and the prefrontal cortex) are all explored. Numerous literature reviews are used as examples to fight against the argument that animals are merely machines and can therefore be used and abused. Animal social bonds, including parent-child, purely social, and animal-human, are analyzed for their evolutionary and biological purposes in attempt to highlight the relationships that are not obviously valuable …

Exercise Physiologists: Essential Players In Interdisciplinary Teams For Noncommunicable Chronic Disease Management, E Sme J. Soan, Steven J. Street, Sharon Brownie, Andrew P. Hills

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, are a growing public health challenge in Australia, accounting for a significant and increasing cost to the health care system. Management of these chronic conditions is aided by interprofessional practice, but models of care require updating to incorporate the latest evidence-based practice. Increasing research evidence reports the benefits of physical activity and exercise on health status and the risk of inactivity to chronic disease development, yet physical activity advice is often the least comprehensive component of care. An essential but as yet underutilized player in NCD prevention and management …

Rising To The Challenge: Nursing Leadership Via Nurse-Led Service Provision For Chronic Disease Management And Prevention, Gary E. Day, Sharon Brownie

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

All nations are currently challenged by the increasing prevalence of non-communicable and chronic disease [1]. In Australia, by 2051, over 50% of the population over 50 will have a chronic disease [2]. In addition to increased levels of chronic disease, services will be stretched through workforce shortages, and government policies to provide greater access to services. Within the United States of America demand for primary care services will further increased by the passage and progressive implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which expands Medicaid coverage to millions of low-income Americans [3]. Given the increasing levels of disease burden, all …

The Combined Effects Of Copper Sulfate And Hypoxia Stress On The Swim Performance Of Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis Macrochirus), Dustin D. Anderson Jan 2014

The Combined Effects Of Copper Sulfate And Hypoxia Stress On The Swim Performance Of Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis Macrochirus), Dustin D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Copper (Cu) is a component of several aquatic pesticides often used to target noxious algae, but at high concentrations may elicit toxic effects on non-target organisms such as fish. The severity of Cu toxicity varies widely by fish species, Cu concentration, duration of exposure, and water quality. Hypoxia is a widely occurring aquatic stressor that is also a potential side effect of Cu application due to increased oxygen demand from algae decay. Because Cu and hypoxia stress may occur in concert, it is important to understand and quantify their combined effects. Critical swimming speed (Ucrit) tests are an efficient and …

Investigating The Heterogeneous Chemistry Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Other Organic Species In Atmospheric Aerosols, Richard Cochran

Theses and Dissertations

Organic aerosols (OA; organic compounds present on the surface or within aerosols) in the atmosphere may play a significant role in various atmospheric processes as well as have an impact on human health. While many primary (direct) sources of OA (POA) are known, a significant portion of OA is formed through the oxidation of primary precursors, creating secondary organic aerosols (SOA) through processes that are still unclear. This dissertation, therefore, focuses on the development of analytical methods for characterizing SOA as well as investigating the mechanism behind their formation and aerosol chemistry.

In the first phase of this work, methods …

Effects Of Anti-Inflammatory Foods On Hyperglycemia In Type-1 Diabetics, Primrose Martin, Michelle Chino

McNair Poster Presentations

Based on a case study administered by Dr. Charlotte Gerson, an IDDM patient referred to as R.H. reversed hyperglycemic symptoms within ten weeks while adhering to a diet of mainly vegetables and some low-glycemic index fruits. R.H. also ingested mineral supplements and underwent multiple coffee enemas each day (Gerson & Bishop, 2007, p. 56). This self-study hypothesizes that diet alone has a positive correlation coefficient with hyperglycemic blood glucose levels in type-1 diabetics (IDDM). Conducting this self-study contributes information to the limited research and database of alternative methods for managing IDDM hyperglycemia, and provides candid documentation of the effects that …

Proust, The Suffering Artist, Matthew G. Buyachek Jan 2014

Proust, The Suffering Artist, Matthew G. Buyachek

Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards

This thesis examines the interrelationship between suffering and art in the context of À la recherché du temps perdu by Marcel Proust. I first trace a lineage of suffering and art, conduct a literature review of relevant criticism on Proust's work and on suffering and art, and finally explicate volumes one and five of Proust's magnum opus. I interpret the scene of the goodnight-kiss to be the genesis of Marcel’s search and his path to artistry. In this scene, Marcel profanes his mother qua maternal and artistic ideal, and subsequently sublimates Mme de Guermantes and Albertine in an attempt to …

Cracking The Code On Stem: A People Strategy For Nevada's Economy, Jessica A. Lee, Mark Muro, Jonathan Rothwell, Scott Andes, Siddharth Kulkarni

Brookings Mountain West Publications

Nevada has in place a plausible economic diversification strategy—and it’s beginning to work. Now, the state and its regions need to craft a people strategy. Specifically, the state needs to boost the number of Nevadans who possess at least some postsecondary training in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or math—the so-called “STEM” disciplines (to which some leaders add arts and design to make it “STEAM”).

The moment is urgent—and only heightened by the projected worker needs of Tesla Motors’ planned “gigafactory” for lithium-ion batteries in Storey County.

Even before the recent Tesla commitment, a number of the more high-tech …
