Assessing The Impact Of International Human Rights Pressures: The Dominican Republic And China, Limer Batista
Dissertations and Theses
Human rights abuses occur regularly around the world, affecting millions of people each year. In the post-World War II era, a human rights movement helped create regional and international human rights regimes. This thesis tries to assess the impact of international human rights pressure on state compliance with international human rights norms and conventions. In investigating the impact of human rights pressure on states, I hypothesize that certain conditions are helpful. The first condition is the absence of a strong public opinion and/or cultural sentiment against what the pressuring entities are trying to achieve. The second condition is dependency: dependent …

Health Policies In Quebec: When The Right Hand Doesn’T Know What The Left Hand Is Doing, Alexandre Couture Gagnon, Jean-François Savard
Political Science Faculty Publications
This article analyzes the coherence of public health and transportation policy in Quebec. It concludes that, while the formulation of these policies is coherent, their implementation is incongruent. Health policy in Quebec aims, among other things, at lowering deaths and diseases caused by air pollution; and transportation policy in Quebec aims at lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Yet the implementation of these policies does not make it possible to reach this target because of thickness of hierarchies, that is, the number of hierarchies (Hupe, 2010). Otherwise said, decentralization in the two departments leads to wrong interpretation of joint priorities.

Teaching and learning (T&L) is considered an essential skill for graduate students (Rose, 2012). University T&L centres offer a range of workshops, seminars, and certificates, which allow students to engage with peers who are interested and enthusiastic about T&L and gain support for and confidence in their own teaching (Hughes, 2006). Still, there can be little opportunity for students to engage in more informal T&L dialogue within or outside of their department (Leger & Young, 2014). Through informal student feedback, the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) at Dalhousie University identified this gap in graduate student T&L development, and created …
Toward A Jurisprudence Of Drug Regulation, Matthew Herder
Toward A Jurisprudence Of Drug Regulation, Matthew Herder
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Efforts to foster transparency in biopharmaceutical regulation are well underway: drug manufacturers are, for example, legally required to register clinical trials and share research results in the United States and Europe. Recently, the policy conversation has shifted toward the disclosure of clinical trial data, not just trial designs and basic results. Here, I argue that clinical trial registration and disclosure of clinical trial data are necessary but insufficient. There is also a need to ensure that regulatory decisions that flow from clinical trials — whether positive (i.e. product approvals) or negative (i.e. abandoned products, product refusals, and withdrawals) — are …
Climate Geoengineering And Dispute Settlement Under Unclos And The Unfccc: Stormy Seas Ahead?, Meinhard Doelle
Climate Geoengineering And Dispute Settlement Under Unclos And The Unfccc: Stormy Seas Ahead?, Meinhard Doelle
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
This paper considers the potential for the UNCLOS and UNFCCC regimes to be faced with disputes at the intersection between the management of climate change and ocean governance. Using the example of geo-engineering, the chapter considers how tensions between climate mitigation and management and conservation goals are likely to be addressed under the two regimes. The paper explores the capacity of the existing dispute resolutions mechanisms under the two regimes to deal with these tensions, conflicts and overlap.

Geography
In this paper, seven researchers reflect on the journeys their research projects have taken when they engage with and synthesize complex problems. These journeys embody an adaptive approach to tackling problems characterized by their interconnectedness and emergence, and that transcend traditional units of analysis such as ecosystems. In this paper we argue that making such a process deliberate and explicit will help researchers better combine different research paradigms such as expert-driven and participant-directed work, thus resulting in both broad explanations and specific phenomenon; research tensions traditionally defined as oppositional must be approached as complimentary. This paper includes researchers’ personal journeys …
Effective Utilization Of Foreign Aid In Counterinsurgency Operations, Gabriel Schickel
Effective Utilization Of Foreign Aid In Counterinsurgency Operations, Gabriel Schickel
Dissertations and Theses
The repercussions of September 11, 2011 have been felt worldwide and have drastically changed the paradigm in which countries operate today. They have justified two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and incursion into sovereign territories in pursuit of terrorists and insurgents. As insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan have continued to thrive, Coalition countries have been forced to adjust their approach to defeating non-conventional forces that they are largely not trained to fight. This has resulted in tactics that utilize what scholars have called “Smart Power,” a mixture of both hard and soft power. Foreign aid and its distribution in COIN …
The Child-Welfare System And The Limits Of Determinacy, Clare Huntington
The Child-Welfare System And The Limits Of Determinacy, Clare Huntington
Faculty Scholarship
Robert Mnookin’s article, Child-Custody Adjudication: Judicial Functions in the Face of Indeterminacy, is a classic. His insights into the substance and process of family law have influenced scholars for nearly four decades. This essay, written for a symposium marking the upcoming anniversary of the article, demonstrates that Congress adopted many of Mnookin’s proposals to introduce greater determinacy into the child welfare system. And yet the problems he described nearly forty years ago sound all too familiar today. After engaging in a detailed analysis of the reforms, I argue that with the evidence on determinacy now in hand, it is time …
Nutritional And Immunological Evaluation Of Soy-Based Diets For Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus) Aquaculture, Daniel Ward
Nutritional And Immunological Evaluation Of Soy-Based Diets For Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus) Aquaculture, Daniel Ward
Open Access Dissertations
Summer flounder aquaculture has progressed significantly in the last twenty years, and diets have been optimized to provide optimal nutrition, ensuring a high quality final product. Recently, the focus of research has evolved toward finding a replacement for fish meal in diets for many species, as the demand for fish meal worldwide has caused the primary protein product to become increasingly economically volatile. Therefore, a series of experiments were designed to systematically evaluate feeds for summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus) including soy-based products as the primary protein source. The first feed trial involved the comparison of three diets; a …
Prediction Of Structure Borne Noise Radiation And Propagation From Offshore Impact Pile Driving, Huikwan Kim
Prediction Of Structure Borne Noise Radiation And Propagation From Offshore Impact Pile Driving, Huikwan Kim
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigates prediction of structure borne noise radiation and propagation from offshore impact pile driving in shallow water environment. Noise generated by offshore impact pile driving radiates into and propagates through the air, water, and sediment medium. Predicting noise levels around the pile structure at sea is required to estimate the effects of the noise and vibration on marine life. This study used one of the commercial FE (Finite Element) code Abaqus 6.11 to calculate harmonic and transient response of the offshore wind turbine support structure and associated acoustic pressure amplitudes due to hydraulic hammer impact on top. Phytochemical Investigation Of The Traditional Botanical Medicine Iresine Celosia, Caroline Grace Killian
Open Access Dissertations
Iresine celosia L. is a traditional medicine used by the indigenous Mayan people for a variety of ailments. It is also the sole active ingredient in the Odyliresin™ formulation currently marketed to humans worldwide as an antioxidant and for the promotion of prostate health. However, Odyliresin™ has not been characterized phytochemically, or evaluated biologically for its intended use. This work represents the first comprehensive phytochemical investigation of the Odyliresin™ formulation botanical extract. To better understand its constitutive phytochemistry, a tailored isolation scheme was developed, using various chromatography resins (silica gel, LH-20), separation and purification techniques. In all, eleven compounds were …

The Relationship Between Families’ Perceptions And Nurses’ Perceptions Of Family Nursing Practice, Kara Misto
Open Access Dissertations
The prevalence of diabetes, a chronic illness, is expected to substantially rise over the next fifteen years (Whiting, Guariguata, Weil, & Shaw, 2011). One approach to ease the burden on the US health care system is the involvement and participation of family in care of the hospitalized adult. There is increasing evidence that involvement of family during exacerbations and hospitalizations increases client and family satisfaction during admissions and may also decrease length of stay and therefore cost (Powers & Rubenstein, 1999). The purposes of this study were to examine family members’ perceptions of family functioning, family health and the social …
Compartmentalized D2-Dopamine Receptors: Roles In Signaling & Potential Mechanism Of Antipsychotic Drug Action, J. Christopher Octeau
Compartmentalized D2-Dopamine Receptors: Roles In Signaling & Potential Mechanism Of Antipsychotic Drug Action, J. Christopher Octeau
Open Access Dissertations
Dopamine is the most widely distributed catecholamine neurotransmitter in the brain. D2-dopamine receptors (D2R) are one member of a receptor class, known as G-protein coupled receptors, which transduce cellular signals upon an interaction with dopamine. Historically, it was believed that in schizophrenic patients, an excess of dopaminergic signaling at D2R was the cause of psychotic symptoms. Thus, antipsychotics reversed psychosis by blocking excessive dopaminergic signaling from D2R. Sixty years after the introduction of antipsychotic drugs, the connection between the anti-dopaminergic activity of these drugs at D2R and the suppression of psychotic symptoms remains unknown. Understanding the ways that different molecules …
Subestuarine Circulation And Dispersion In Narragansett Bay, Christelle Balt
Subestuarine Circulation And Dispersion In Narragansett Bay, Christelle Balt
Open Access Dissertations
The subestuaries in the northern reaches of Narragansett Bay (Rhode Island, USA) are susceptible to summertime water quality impairment. High nutrient loading of these systems leads to eutrophication and recurrent hypoxia, which cause ecosystem degradation and incidents of organism mass mortality. Management efforts to improve water quality include reductions in nutrient input to Narragansett Bay. We hypothesize that nutrient reductions may not sufficiently improve the health of severely impacted regions due to physical processes that contribute to water quality deterioration, including high vertical density stratification and low horizontal exchange. Dispersion depends on vertical turbulent mixing and advection. Circulation and dispersion …

Situated Intercultural Communication: Domestic And International Student Interaction, Emily Spitzman
Open Access Dissertations
As higher education continues to internationalize, more institutions are making it an educational priority to increase intercultural competence among all students. Despite this goal, institutions regularly place students in intercultural programs without facilitating training and reflection on intercultural learning, with the expectation that students will learn from contact alone. There is a need for investigation into situated intercultural communication, for the limited studies that do examine interactions between international and domestic students do not look at the interactions themselves, do not situate the interactions in a specific context, and often examine only the students‘ international/domestic statuses or countries of origin …
