Background: In recent years, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have generated considerable interest and debate on the implications for tobacco control and public health. Although the rapid growth of e-cigarettes is global, at present, little is known about awareness and use. This paper presents self-reported awareness, trial and current use of e-cigarettes in 10 countries surveyed between 2009 and 2013; for six of these countries, we present the first data on e-cigarettes from probability samples of adult smokers. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of probability samples of adult (≥ 18 years) current and former smokers participating in the International Tobacco Control (ITC) surveys …

Billing And Insurance-Related Administrative Costs In United States’ Health Care: Synthesis Of Micro-Costing Evidence, Aliya Jiwani, David Himmelstein, Steffie Woolhandler, James G. Kahn Nov 2014

Billing And Insurance-Related Administrative Costs In United States’ Health Care: Synthesis Of Micro-Costing Evidence, Aliya Jiwani, David Himmelstein, Steffie Woolhandler, James G. Kahn

Publications and Research

Background The United States’ multiple-payer health care system requires substantial effort and costs for administration, with billing and insurance-related (BIR) activities comprising a large but incompletely characterized proportion. A number of studies have quantified BIR costs for specific health care sectors, using micro-costing techniques. However, variation in the types of payers, providers, and BIR activities across studies complicates estimation of system-wide costs. Using a consistent and comprehensive definition of BIR (including both public and private payers, all providers, and all types of BIR activities), we synthesized and updated available micro-costing evidence in order to estimate total and added BIR costs …

Long-Distance Retinoid Signaling In The Zebra Finch Brain, Tina C. Roeske, Constance Scharff, Christopher R. Olson, Arpik Nshdejan, Claudio V. Mello

Publications and Research

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), the main active metabolite of vitamin A, is a powerful signaling molecule that regulates large-scale morphogenetic processes during vertebrate embryonic development, but is also involved post-natally in regulating neural plasticity and cognition. In songbirds, it plays an important role in the maturation of learned song. The distribution of the ATRA-synthesizing enzyme, zRalDH, and of ATRA receptors (RARs) have been described, but information on the distribution of other components of the retinoid signaling pathway is still lacking. To address this gap, we have determined the expression patterns of two obligatory RAR co-receptors, the retinoid X receptors (RXR) …

Habits Of Democracy: A Deweyan Approach To Citizenship Education In America Today, Sarah M. Stitzlein Nov 2014

Habits Of Democracy: A Deweyan Approach To Citizenship Education In America Today, Sarah M. Stitzlein

Education and Culture

Today’s social and political context is filled with environmental elements that both support and work against deep, participatory democracy. I argue that certain democratic habits should be nurtured through a supportive formative culture, especially in schools, in order to best achieve good democratic life in the present context. My aim here is to fill some of the gaps within the picture of democracy that Dewey paints, to employ Dewey’s unique understanding of habit formation and change as key elements of political agency, and to suggest some fruitful avenues for citizenship education in today’s social and political context.
